I've been to double nickel a few times and the steaks are inconsistent. My steak last night was the 16 ounce ribeye and it was the toughest ribeye I have ever had. I would highly not recommend double nickel steakhouse for the overpriced highly mediocre and sometime terrible steaks. read more

This restaurant took over 45 minutes to serve my rare steak. While I was waiting for my dinner to be served, the bartender said he was going to give me a complimentary desert. He did NOT offer me desert (complimentary or otherwise). This all happened early in the evening, while the restaurant was not busy. Definitely would not like to be here on a busy night. read more

This review would have been 4.5 stars until the bill came...my boyfriend and I are very new to Lubbock from California and wanted a very special place to celebrate our anniversary, we heard this place is a top notch steakhouse in Lubbock so we came to spend some money celebrating our special day. We ordered Lobster and Fillet Mignon plus a bottle of wine...obviously not the cheapest choices on the menu and if I was just rating the food, it would be 5 stars. The lobster tail and fillet mignon were perfectly prepared, so if you only care about the food, it was amazing...it better be for the most expensive steakhouse in Lubbock. The reason that we took away 2 stars was due to lack of communication. Our waiter said that our entrees come with two sides and if we wanted to substitute, we could choose from the sides menu. We decided to go with one regular side and substitute a salad for the second side since nothing else interested us on the side menu. At this point, the waiter should have communicated that they would charge us extra for the house salads if we still wanted it and also extra if we substituted another side. It was not a huge fee, altogether about $10 on a $160 bill, but it's the principle. If you are going to charge more for another substitute, you should let your patron know so they can decide what they want to do. I still don't see why they even had to charge us for these simple inexpensive substitutions...but the point is communication. Hope this helps some of you who read this in deciding where you should spend a special occasion or take your special someone. I would still go back, but knowing what I know, I would ask a lot of questions of what is included in the price and what will cost extra. read more

I took my husband here for his birthday and made the reservation online via Open Table. On the reservation, the form asks if there is a specific reason you are coming in. I stated we were celebrating my husband's birthday. When we arrived, we were greeted by 3 friendly hostesses. As we were being taken back to our table, the hostess wished my husband a happy birthday. What a nice touch! It was pretty quiet when we arrived (6:45 pm) but it got busy after 7:00 so the noise level increased as it was graduation weekend. We were also seated by the kitchen entrance and bar. I would request to be seated elsewhere next time simply due to the noise. Our server was nice. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms and lobster bisque for appetizers. The mushrooms were amazing, but the lobster bisque (at nearly $11/bowl) was more like tomato bisque with a kick. No lobster taste or bits in sight! We both ordered the 12 oz ribeyes with creamed corn and mashed potatoes. The sear on the steak was the best we've had, but the seasoning just wasn't there. Overall, it was a nice experience. Our bill was just under $100. It's not a place we'll visit often, but if you want a change of scenery and great service, this is a place you might consider trying. read more

The hostesses asked for our first and last name and insisted that this information be provided before they would sit us. Actually save your cash, go the half block down and get the same steak, appetizers, desserts and service that would at least rival what you find at Double Nickel. Spent our twentieth anniversary there. Started the evening by having management move us to another table to accommodate another group; this after having specified in our reservations beforehand about the special nature of the occasion. Then received lukewarm service -- slow and uninterested. Though the quiet, dark atmosphere was ideal for the occasion, the mediocre service and the uncaring management made our special evening "just another night out." We have been going here at least once every other month since it opened. The food is good, but not as good as it once was. Steak is really good, but again, not quite the same quality as it once was. Get the signature salad with your meal. They have the best salad and maple vinaigrette dressing in town. At one time, you got two of the signature fried cheese sticks and a green onion with your meal. Now you just get one cheese stick and no onion. At the prices you pay, I would rather pay an extra dollar or two and get the two fried cheese sticks and onion. The onion provides a nice piece of edible garnish that gives color to your plate. The cheese sticks are, well, cheese sticks. Lisa West used to be there and would walk around to thank people for coming. I haven't seen her in ages. She needs to get a little more hands on. read more

I made arrangements via email with the staff of the Double Nickel to provide a special night for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. They were extremely patient through multiple email communications to get everything just right, including managing flowers and a card at the table (since I live out-of-town). My parents left at the end of the night feeling like a king and queen. Thank you, Double Nickel, for going out of your way to provide a special night for a dear couple who didn't have two nickels to rub together 50 years ago. We were in town for a golf tournament and we wanted steak for dinner. Found Double Nickel on Yelp. Atmosphere was a classic steak house. Nice Ambiance. Wine List was A++. All our favorites. I ordered the Sea Bass and my friend got the filet. We shared entrees. I am home now and dreaming about the filet. It was cooked to perfection- like butter. Wow! It was the best. We splurged for dessert and ordered bananas foster- beautiful flaming dessert. Served with ice cream. It was out of this world. Service was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and was very informative when we asked about the history of the restaurant. Will definitely go back. Money well spent for First Class service and Food! read more

I have been to this restaurant once for a special occasion. The word of mouth from my professional friends was that this was a very exclusive restaurant, excellent food, refined atmosphere, dress code. I concur completely about the food. My steak au poivre was superb! However, the atmosphere is that of a loud sports bar, televisions included. This is not fine dining. If that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere. Conversation at the table is impossible due to the general noise levels. Service was good, although my server's attitude left a lot to be desired. If you don't mind five star prices for a three star atmosphere, go for it. But I'll never return. read more

We had dinner last night at Double Nickel for Valentine's Day, and it was the best Valentine's Day dinner we have ever had! We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and we didn't have to wait for our table...it was ready and treated us like regulars.. .even though this was our first visit. The food was phenomenal. The hostess suggested that we start off with the bacon wrapped shrimp, which was served with a champagne butter sauce and it was fabulous.... not on the menu I might add. I have eaten here once and can not say enough about it. Some say its pricey, I did not think so for what we got. Our service was excellent. Our server was there just seconds before we needed her to be. When dealing with food allergies, it can be difficult to find restaurants that will be accomodating. When I made the reservations, I explained about the allergy, the manager came to our table upon arrival to make sure we knew what was on the menu that would not cause a problem. Okay for rare occasions for couples but get ready to pay for the "atmosphere". You can get the same quality steaks at Longhorn, Outback, and 50 Yard Line for less money. read more
