I looked at recommendations here on Yelp on what to try and went with the Chicken fried steak and it was one of the best chicken fried steaks that I have ever had. If I lived near there, I'd be there all the time just for that steak. Sides were mid, but the service was great! We dined here tonight and the service and the food and the atmosphere were all excellent. The chicken fried steak was perfect. It was perfect! Did I say perfect? I'm pretty picky. But my wife loved her CFS, too. The sides were great. The service was wonderful. Our waiter was attentive, informative and nice. We're new to the area and this was our first visit here and our waiter guided us through the menu. They have brunch on the weekends. I'm going to try it out very soon! If you live in Ransom Canyon or Slaton, or even Post, don't even bother to go to Lubbock! This place is fantastic. They have a German influence here, so next time I visit I will branch out and try a German plate. read more

Great service and THE BEST Chicken Fried Steak!! The creamed corn was also awesome. We went on a Sunday evening, because Casa de Miguel was closed, and what a blessing in disguise! It wasn't busy, but I understand Friday and Sat nights, and Saturday and Sunday brunch can be very busy. Our server, Angel, was helpful and happy to answer all my questions, as it was our first time to dine here. The other wait staff was also attentive to their diners. We liked the rustic, atmosphere with what looked like the original tin ceiling. This restaurant is right on Slaton's town square, across from the 1809 train engine. We wish that more of the store fronts would become occupied. It's a great town square. We will definitely be going back to try other items, like the German ones, and will bring guests to this little gem. Can't wait to go back! read more

While our server was very attentive the food was less than stellar. Sirloin steak had grizzle on bottom side of half the steak. The rib eye had a lot of grizzle also. I was surprised that while the entrees come with 2 sides, a side salad is a premium side and cost extra. Not sure it was worth the drive down from Lubbock - it was our wedding anniversary and thought we would try someplace new. I am giving an extra star for service and the environment. Server was very nice and attentive. I went on lunch and it was a relaxed environment but food came fast so you could also get back to work on time. I got the homemade Jalepeno sausage and it was good. The side were underwhelming but this could just be my taste. The server warned me that the German potato salad is not the same but since I had never had any before I wanted to try it. I'm not sure how to describe the taste, perhaps it was sweeter than I was imagining but not in a good sweet way. Perhaps it is good for the dish and I just don't understand. Advertised as a German-Texan restaurant and I never would have believed it without experiencing it. Slaton is a wide spot in the road, but 1809 is worth the drive and the time if you want to get out of Lubbock city limits. I'm a huge fan of schnitzel, just check out my post history, so I didn't have high expectations. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised at how good everything tasted! Even the German potato salad was superb (so long as you don't mind the authentic style). I look forward to a return visit to experience the outdoor biergarten portion of the restaurant. I live in southwest Lubbock, but if forced to choose my favorite restaurant in the greater Lubbock area, might just choose this little spot out in Slaton. There is no German food in Lubbock to speak of, so the German offerings at 1809 are as welcome as they are delicious. The schnitzels, the pretzel (massive), the wurst--you can't go wrong with any of it. Their chili is also quite good, although it would be better still with a bit less tomato, and a shade more broth and powdered chile. The service is special, too. The gals who work here truly go the extra mile to make their customers happy, and they are much appreciated. The atmosphere is also pretty cool. The place is kind of homely in a charming way, and has an authentic West Texas feel that is surprisingly hard to find, even in the heart of West Texas. The fact that the restaurant is situated on Slaton's delightful old town square only adds to the effect. So, if you live in Lubbock but want to get out in the sticks and try something different and very good, 1809 is definitely the place. It gets my top recommendation. read more

Holy cow!! We stopped at this place upon recommendations from Yelp. We weren't sure what to expect, but we discovered a place that was decorated as though West Germany met West Texas. Both the service the food were impeccable! They even have several Gluten Free options! The Jager Schnitzel, Sour Kraut, German Potato Salad & EVERYTHING each of us ate was incredible!! We were passing through on a Sunday afternoon so we hit the lunch crowd. The staff were hustling to take care of everyone. This isn't fast food in any way but so worth the wait!! I would not recommend making the drive from Lubbock unless you enjoy LOUD LOUD music....A very small dining area as the bar takes up most of the place.....Pictures on the website are very misleading so do not trust them....IF you enjoy canned green beans, instant mashed potatoes (which both were cold), then this is the place to go. If you enjoy mediocre service (it appears that if you are not a local, this is what you get)....If you enjoy french fries that are 90% raw, then this is the place to go....Overall not worth the drive or the money. read more

We came in for lunch on Monday after seeing posts about the restaurant on Facebook. The restaurant is located on the square directly across from the black locomotive. (It's on the opposite side from the bakery.) When we walked in, the restaurant only had 5 empty tables, so we were seated at a high top table near the front corner. It was a bit chilly because the swinging entrance doors were not fully closing on their own. Our waitress came to deliver menus and take our drink order, although she did not introduce herself. (Her name was Jasmine, as I asked her later for her name.) I asked her what they had and she said water and "all the soft drinks." I was expecting her to tell me about their bar drinks because there is a large bar in the restaurant, but she didn't mention any. I ordered tea, but she told me they don't have tea, so I went for water and my husband ordered a soda. A few minutes later, she brought our drinks and started our order. I ordered the large pretzel as an appetizer. I also ordered the chicken fried steak, green beans, and salad with ranch. (The ranch IS homemade. Bonus!) My husband ordered the jagerschnitzel, loaded mashed potatoes, and a salad. It took a while for our pretzel to come out, but it was piping hot and delicious. It could have used some salt, but the mustard and beer cheese were good. Finally our food arrived. The green beans were excellent and the chicken fried steak was good, albeit a bit greasier and smaller than I am used to. The salads were great, and I enjoyed the type of lettuce they used as well as the cucumbers. The only issue I had with my food was it didn't seem hot enough. It was mildly warm and that quickly dwindled being so close to a door that wasn't fully closing. It didn't take long for the food to get cold. I ordered a side of the german potato salad when we ordered, but they forgot to bring it. Amos, the GM, visited our table and got that for us while also removing the item from our ticket. I personally didn't care for the potato salad, but that is probably just due to personal tastes. Jasmine asked us several times if we needed anything. I am not sure if they have dessert. If so, and if we had been asked if we wanted any, we probably would have ordered some. I think there are some opportunities for wait staff to improve the customer experience (Hi, my name is ____. What brings you in today?) as well as increase sales (Drinks? We have, water, soda and a full bar. The ____ is really popular/good.) One thing I did not like was that we were not provided a printed, itemized copy of our receipt prior to paying. The receipt was loaded into a tablet that the waitress was holding. I had to ask about the potato salad being comped which then prompted our waitress to ask Amos to authorize the removal. I am unsure how much we were charged for each item. I also think the branding of the restaurant is still being worked out. For example, the signage, vintage ceiling, bar, and flatware seemed upscale; but the partitions between the booths were made of closet rods and plastic sheathing. While, I certainly appreciate the costs involved in modifying a space for safety, it left me a little confused on the intended ambience. Perhaps this is temporary. Amos is doing a nice job with talking to the customers. The restaurant might also look into their website format. The bottom of the menu is cut off on iOS devices. Overall, the experience was okay, but we do plan to return to try additional items. It's worth the drive to Slaton if you are wanting to try a new dining experience. read more

Last night we had dinner at Texas 1809 in Slaton for the first time. The food was the best I have had in a long time! The service was fantastic, ambiance wasn't quite there, but we were there early, so no music. But, again, the food! I had Schnitzel with red cabbage and warm potato salad. It was better than what I've had in Fredericksburg recently. The Beer Cheese Pretzel apptetizer was crunchy and soft at the same time, just like a perfect pretzel should be. It could have been a meal itself. My husbands steak was the best he had had in long time as well. We had the Crawford Bock to drink and it was very good. We heard about TEXAS 1809. I ordered chicken fried steak and BJ had the Jager Schnitzel with sausage. BJ's schnitzel was awesome, huge, and flavorful. My chicken fried steak was thick, crispy, and perfectly fried without being greasy. The German sausage was juicy, plump, not overcooked, and elevated by German mustard. The portions were huge, served on platters and the side dishes were wonderful. The ambiance was Texas casual. Our waitress, Mykah, was very friendly and attentive, without being intrusive. Friday and Saturday evenings they have live music on the patio. We'll be back y'all! read more

Operational when we visited on 3/28/2021. We are on a long road trip and we're looking for a real meal! Tired of fast food. Based on the reviews we stopped here with our 3 kids (5,7 and 9). They have a nice outdoor patio but an off duty waitress and her ill behaved child who were also on the patio ruined the dining experience with smoking, swearing, playing music on her iphone and her kid breaking glass on the patio and being a complete nuisance. Now to the food. Kids meals were good a value with a decent burger, corn dog and chicken strips but no drink included. The fries were indeed good. I had the Reuben sandwich. I'd give that a 2.7. I love Reubens so this was a bummer. My husband had the Texas schnitzel with red chili. He said it was a 3.5 and he wishes he had gotten the one with the gravy instead. Waiter was a very nice man and good waiter. Too bad the off duty waitress ruined our patio experience. We were really hoping to have ribeyes but they were sold out. That was a bummer. So disappointed. Had read great reviews and was super excited to drive to Slaton to give it a try. I have no complaints about the taste of the food, but it wasn't special enough to drive to Slaton for. What totally ruined the meal for us...1) really poor service. We ordered appetizers and they came out 3-minutes before our main courses, and when the main courses came out they were cold, and the staff was frustrated that there wasn't room on our table for the plates. Long delays on everything, and since our server wasn't bringing anything to us we were never asked for refills on our drinks. 2) FLIES!!! OMG it was like eating at a picnic!! It was miserable!! It was almost impossible to eat our food because we were constantly flailing and shooing them away. I understand that flies can be difficult to manage, especially now, but a professional pest control company could greatly mitigate their fly problem. 3) At 6:30pm they were out of desserts! We tried to order some to go - no desserts. Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but it sorta sealed the deal for us that this place - a great concept - needs to work thru some growing pains. read more
