A Halloween of Xenophobia, Ethnocentrism, and of course... Racism. Welcome to Double Wide, a trendy little dive bar in Dallas, Texas. The evening went pretty well until a WTF moment that made me cringe and wonder what's wrong with some people? While hanging out on the patio of Double Wide with a group of friends Halloween night we saw a guy show up to the party with a fake beard, white robe, and a turban. To his chest was strapped a very elaborate bomb complete with lights and lots of wires. I probably don't have to go any further to paint the picture of what was taking place. The urge hit for me to "greet" him. Without being overly in your face I accosted him in an attempt to illustrate just how disgustingly racist his costume was, and that I was surprised they allowed him in Double Wide at all. He quickly explained that it wasn't racist and that he was a "Jaeger Bomb", then pointed out that Redbull, and Jaeger containers were included in the workings of his bomb. (Jaw on floor) Though I let him know that he should leave while hanging his head in shame, I did nothing so confrontational as to warrant removal from the venue. A few minutes of verbal confrontation but without ever raising voices above what the sound level required is all that transpired. I have no idea what his friends told the bouncer. But while I was walking away, and clearly presented no threat to him, the bouncer found me and told me I need to leave. This guy hadn't even been nearby and had only hearsay to go on, and I'm STILL curious what was said to him. But somehow he decided I was the one who needed to be removed without asking a single question! As I walked out, and without raising my voice I quietly protested and tried to explain the situation. To paraphrase his response. It's Halloween, lighten up. He's a Jager bomb dude. Again, I'm paraphrasing, but I asked why the guy in the racist costume was allowed in, and why he shouldn't be removed unless they support racism. I would have gladly left if they sent him out too. A second bouncer said; now I quote, "it's fucking America". Then he said, "you're white, why does it fucking matter?" read more

I have nothing but good things to say about Double Wide. The staff has always been on point, the music is as eclectic as the patrons, and the decor has always been and is a fun point of conversation, especially when bringing out of towners there. But my 5 star review really goes out to Kim, the owner. She not only has been a staple in the Dallas bar/music scene, but has personally been instrumental in making what could have been an extremely dark day for my family and I fun and welcoming. When my father passed a year ago, she accommodated us by opening early so everyone who wanted to come and give a toast to a good man could do so. She was kind and helpful, and made sure all his friends and colleagues felt at home. There were regulars trickling in near the end (it was time for them to open to the public), and no one felt out of place or threatened in any way. After years of patronage, playing music, and even working the door there for a short time, I can assuredly say every time I'm back in Dallas the Double Wide is the first spot I visit. I live next door to this bar and I can honestly say that this place is a part of my daily existence. I see it when I wake up in the morning and when I close my blinds at night. It shares my view of downtown and sometimes it invades my dreams while I sleep. The music that is played there and the crowds which visit on any given are as diverse as the neighborhood in which it resides. It's the cleanest dive bar I have ever been in and even after a large event, they stay late into the wee hours to make sure their little corner of the world is clean and tidy for the next day - I know, I have watched them. I love their outdoor market and the events they bring are always a ton of fun. The staff is friendly and professional and they always look out for the people who walk through their doors, whether you are from the neighborhood or it's your first time to step foot in the place and everyone is welcome and every one is treated with respect. good crowd, friendly service, some fun cool people, but drinks are way overpriced, the bands suck and overpriced to see them, place is way too small, standing only. The decor really sucks, very trashy decar, murdered animals hung all over walls of main bar, terrible art, terrible furniture, commodes were used as chairs outside. Very nasty smelling food truck that smells like a rank decaying animal slaughter house parks right in front that had super high prices. No safe place to park, our car was broke into right in front of bar entrance. It seems like they are trying to express what hell is like instead of making people happy & comfortable. Awesome place! I've been here several times since they opened a few years back, and it keeps getting better. Easy parking (except on super busy nights) right around the corner, and they usually have staff outside showing you where to park and watching the cars. It's refreshing to see a club that actually cares about providing parking fro patrons, as well as providing peace of mind about your car while you are inside. The music is usually great. I've learned that even if I don't know who is playing that night, I will probably enjoy it anyway. read more

I've been to the Double Wide many times over the years, since it originally opened. Seen many shows, played a couple of shows, and have heard many DJ nights there. As a concertgoer, concert reviewer, or a performer, I've never had a problem with their staff. Whether it's the bartenders, door people, or owners, they have always come across as accepting and friendly to all walks of life. One of my Faviurite dive bars in Dallas. Because of its vibe. Because of its visitors. Because of its unique design in the spirit of the eighties. There is a live music. Came to this place after I experience the akward bar down the street called the goat and I have to say that this is a millions zillion times better. I got a Yoo-hoo yee-haw and it was delicious! The decor is pretty awesome and the patio area was even better! It was so qwerky and fun and I had a great time drinking here with my friend! There are nude velvet paintings on the wall and the furniture has seen better days, but these peculiarities make the vibe. One thing that is unusual is that the venue is in a separate building from the main bar, so you don't have to pass on going here if there is a show. I strongly like their drinks. This place is awesome. Monday Trivia is fantastic. I highly recommend. They have a fair amount of redneck themed cocktails made with yoohoo, tang and boons farm. I haven't tried them. Bartenders are fantastic and the crowd is good. It may not be the best place for an Uptown crowd. I've always had fun. read more

This place is a great place to hang out and grab a drink with a friend. When I was younger I use to come to this place all the time.
