Though Dough certainly has some creative flavors, it seems to me like the flavors are hit-or-miss. The first donut I ever had from Dough was a dulce de leche, and it was the best donut I've ever had. This box of four was more misses than hits: the passion fruit was tart, which wasn't what I expected or wanted from a donut; the chocolate-covered one was fair; the blueberry lemon one wasn't as berry-flavored as I'd hoped, and also was on the tart side; and the Nutella one was the best of the bunch (the group of five of us all agreed). Other than the flavors, I think Dough has nailed the consistency of their product. Each donut has substance and thickness while still enjoying an airiness and fluffiness that cake donuts don't offer. Maybe the doughnuts are better in the main locations, but I've been to this stand in Urbanspace many times (as it's conveniently on my way to work) and have found the doughnuts here pretty lackluster. I don't know why everyone keeps recommending them to me. The dough is plain, thick, and covered by glaze that is stingingly sweet and doesn't taste like the advertised flavor. The top portion tends to be dry, while the bottom is often dripping with grease, as if they left the doughnuts sitting in a cold puddle of oil after taking them out of the fryer. They are the largest and most dense doughnuts I've had of this type in NYC (the ones at Doughnut Plant and Doughnut Project are lighter, more flavorful, and more moist) - almost at a bagel level of carb density. Probably great for carb loading before running a marathon or any exercise that burns thousands of calories immediately. The service is also a hit or miss. Today they gave me my doughnut and proceeded to take care of several large orders from customers behind me before preparing my tea. As a result, I had to stand there for 10 mins holding my doughnut, anxious about getting back to work, for them to take 2 seconds to fill a cup with hot water. Dough donuts has to be one of the best donut places I've ever tried. Their dough, true to their name, is so soft and fluffy. I ordered the cafe au lait and the staff told me it was his favorite donut. There's some espresso in it giving it some of the rich coffee flavor but there are also some crunchy bits in the glaze that provide a nice textural element in contrast to the soft dough. Additionally, I didn't think the glaze was overly sweet, so I didn't feel like I was in a sugar cone afterwards. The hibiscus is fruity and the flavor of the icing works well to cut through the doughiness of the yeast bread. These donuts are massive, so be prepared with napkins when you want to tackle one. The almond mocha tastes more like chocolate than coffee, but that was alright with me. The cacao nibs was good, but I do wish they had used pure chocolate instead of a chocolate frosting. I was so excited to see Dough on the list of vendors at the Urbanspace Vanderbilt food court! Now it's here! Fresh baked doughnuts every day and their selections vary daily. After my first failed attempt to get the Passion Fruit the day before, I made sure I stopped by here the very next day. Passion Fruit doughnut was covered with their glazed passionfruit puree and topped with cocoa nibs. I loved the combination of sweet and tarty interaction. There is a reason why this place is named "Dough": the donuts are huge, heavy, and thick. They taste more like sweet pastries in the bread family than a fried donut you'd find at a chain. I've tried the hibiscus before and was disappointed by the weak flavor, which all came from the glaze. There was a single dried hibiscus adorning the donut which amused me. The passionfruit is similar in that the glaze gave a tangy and sweet kick. Otherwise, the rest of the donut fell short. This place NEEDS to work on presentation. The crinkled hibiscus glaze was my fault as I stuffed it into my bag. But the passionfruit, which I ate moments after it was handed to me, was melting. Now that there's a location inside Urbanspace, I can have them whenever I want since it's so close to work. My absolute favorite flavor is their cheesecake. It's a thick gooey frosting with some lemon powder to give it some tartness. It isn't available all the time but definitely puts a smile on my face when I see it. Other great flavors are passion fruit and hibiscus. They have many chocolate concoctions but I don't eat chocolate. As for the size, they're huge and dense!
