Stay away from these folks. They give you the cost of what you need done. You pay them and later come to find out they want to charge for even a consultation fee just to get a cleaning done in top of what you already had paid in advance . For that cleaning they asked you to come in before the next step. Then when you call them out on what they say they tell you you are rude and hang up the phone on you. after several months now they want to go over number again... they did a crappy job on the tempo crown that broke with two weeks... then they give you kind of an attitude. The whole experience suck. I terminated the whole thing. I know that going to the dentist is not always everyone's favorite thing to do, but going here will change your mind! The dentist is thorough and very friendly. He makes going to the dentist a fun experience. When I first came here, I was a hot mess: my jaw was hurting, my teeth were badly damaged from clenching and grinding, and I may have had some cavities from the ridiculous amount of sugar I eat. After a few visits, I had a night guard, fixed teeth and was feeling much better about my dental health. We were stationed in SA years ago and this was our daughter's dentist when she was in elementary. They were located in the Walmart shopping center off 1604. We're stationed in TX again and she now attends UTSA. Although Rolling Oaks Dental was out of her way, she insisted on going to Dr. Dougherty. Unfortunately, her rude billing clerk has deterred her from seeing Dr. Dougherty again. Any active duty family is aware that something happened recently where we were dropped from enrollment and we had to enroll again. I went through this with my dentist and the way they handled it compared to the way Rolling Oaks handled the situation with my daughter was one extreme to another. My dentist's billing clerk was so understanding and patient. They tried to contact United Concordia to resolve the issue but asked if I could try, as they had issues resolving the problem. I called and it was soon resolved. They were so understanding and helpful. My daughter experienced the same issue, however Dr. Dougherty's office was extremely rude and treated us as though we were uninsured. My husband and I received a rude call threatening us about our responsibility for payment, etc. She didn't want to contact United Concordia herself. As a military family, I felt embarrassed the way we were mistreated and spoken to. We resolved the issue ourselves and unfortunately decided to find a new dentist for our daughter with better customer service and closer to campus. After months of moving on, we just received another rude call informing us that we have an unpaid balance that the insurance didn't cover. Their horrible billing continues. The same billing clerk confirmed our daughter's services was a routine cleaning, but could not explain why this is the ONLY dentist where we had uncovered fees for a routine cleaning. All the states we have lived in and all the different dentist offices, we have never had a balance due for an annual cleaning. Military families, please find another dentist whose staff provides us better customer service. We were stationed in Austin at AFC, and my dentist was The Smile Doc. The service I experienced vise our daughter's lack of service was a stark difference! P.s. don't take this review with a grain of salt because I rarely post reviews. The lack of customer service and questionable billing compelled me to warn fellow military families. I found Dr. Dougherty by sheer fate. I had a failed root canal and my previous dentist kept giving me referrals that didn't take my insurance. I made an appointment and Dr. Dougherty referred me to Dr.Meeker who was also amazing AND she took my insurance, yay! Since then my family and I have been seeing him regularly. I see some folks on here complaining about his pricing, but you get what you pay for and you only get one set of teeth to last you your entire lifetime, with that in mind, he only uses the best of the best when it comes to dental care (he's a boujie dentist, and let's be honest, if you're going to be boujie at all, it's completely acceptable when it comes to dental health) and he does quality work. His staff is also great! Bailey at the front desk is such a sweetheart and his hygienists clean my teeth like they have never been cleaned before by any other practice, they're very thorough and professional. You can also watch a movie while they work on you or you can enjoy the scenery of birds eating in his strategically place bird feeders on the windows and if you're lucky you will see a deer stroll by. I hadn't been to a dentist in an embarrassingly long time and badly needed to get my teeth cleaned and a cavity filled. I was putting it off this year because of the pandemic, but started doing a little research about a month ago and found Rolling Oaks Dental about 5 minutes from my house. They had good reviews on Yelp and Google, so I called and found out they were taking new patients so I made an appointment. Amanda was my hygienist and she was awesome! She was very sweet and did my x-rays first, then did a great job cleaning my stained teeth. The staff checked with my insurance and found that we could schedule a second cleaning before the end of the year that would be fully covered, so we did. I'll definitely be going back every six months for routine cleanings. Three weeks later, Amanda did another great job and now my teeth look even MORE brand new! Dr. Larry Dougherty did my exam and filled a hard-to-reach cavity in one of my wisdom teeth. He also did a great job and had a very good chair-side manor. So today was my first time in this office. I was recommended by my mother and sister that had been going for a couple years now. I had been going to Monarch Dental for a couple years now. After the last few experiences/visits with them, I just felt there had to be better service than this somewhere else. From the very beginning, the front desk receptionist was very personable. She asked me how my Christmas and New Years was and we all know when we go to any kind of DR.'s appt, rarely do you hear the receptionist try to have any sort of conversation with you. It was very nice and a very great first impression overall already. After being called back to the room, the assistant was very informative to what she would be doing and how she was going to do it. I was extremely impressed with the x-ray process! Other Dental offices I've been too just want to quickly take the x-rays and be done with it. (I usually end up with cuts in my mouth when that happens) This assistant took her time and was very gentle about the entire process, along with having conversation while doing so. Everything from the Front Desk greeting, Dr.'s Assistant, the DR. himself, and Hygienist was just fantastic! If I could give more stars I would. My Soror referred me and it's been all positive. I've been going here almost 3 years. Dr. Ana pulled my last wisdom tooth and it took all of 2-3 minutes. I didn't feel anything. It took longer for me to numb (because of prior surgery on my jaws) than it did for her to pull that tooth. It healed with NOOOOOOOO problem unlike the other 3 that were pulled while I was in the Army!! She's got great hands and beautiful chair side manner. The other side of the coin is Dr. Larry - funny always takes away the nervousness!! He's cool, great to talk to and ALWAYS honest. He'll tell you what's best not what will break your pocket. So I got my braces off and decided to get my teeth whitened since they had a special. It went super smooth and my teeth are AMAZING!! Everyone is talking about how pretty my teeth are. I followed the instructions they gave me and didn't have any sensitivity during the procedure. Only a couple zings after while I was working out in physical therapy but it stopped after I was done. Absolutely no sensitivity since then. Dr. Larry and Dr. Ana are the BEST dentists in San Antonio hands down!! Thanks for helping to perfect my smile ! I won the patient goodie box this month!! Rolling Oaks Dental is by far one of the best dentist offices in NE San Antonio. I have been going here for almost 4 years to keep my teeth in tip top condition. The staff has undergone a lot of changes but they are still fantastic as ever. The staff is ontop of it for reminding patients for appointments they contact you through email, text and phone calls. They are pretty flexible with rescheduling appointments as well. Dr. Ana Paula Ferraz-Dougherty is amazing. She is such a kind individual that really cares about her patients. She takes time to not only examine your teeth but to talk and catch up. I know the dentist isnt the most pleasant experience but they do have laughing gas if you do need work done! Worst experience I have ever had. Front desk was rude and would not tell me what was included in $150 check up. I explained to her (Victoria I believe) that my three kids had been there a couple years back and the whole family needed dental work now so I figured I would come in and ask some questions and set up an appointment (btw I was also excited to get dental work done and especially because I could give them their first review on yelp which has helped my business grow locally), she continued with a bad attitude telling me its just a basic cleaning if I wanted to know more I would need to talk to an assistant, so I told her that quite alright I would just go else where. (there were 2 other ladies at the front desk that stared but never offered help I found out one was the manager, Wendy) I was upset and was going to go right on yelp and one star them but I thought that no way this would be ok with the Dr. Duo so as a local business owner myself I decided to call and talk to one of them myself personally to explain what happened because I would want to know if one of my contractors was loosing me thousands from a cash paying customer. When I called the same front office answered and try to play interface but I insisted I speak to one of the doctors. She said she would have them call. Instead I am told he would rather talk to me face to face and refused to get on the phone (understandably he was likely with patients), so I decided from one business owner to another I would take the $Time$ the following day1130am to sit down with him and help even though I decided not to use them at all at this point even regardless of the meeting.) The following day much to my surprise I receive a text from Rolling oaks dental reminding me of my appointment and informing me that if I did not show up that they would charge me an office visit. I figured this was his office again trying to play interference so I respectfully replied If I was left waiting I would be billing them for my time as well. I arrive on time the following day, they promptly call me back but as if I am there for a exam even though there was nobody else waiting. I go to the back with my PA. The nurse is persistently trying to get her and I to sit in the exam chair (mind you we never filled out any patient consent forms and there are three other chairs in the room) when we respectfully declined to sit in the exam chair several times, she then asked if we would like to watch tv while we waited. I said no I was there at the request of the doctor to explain to him what happened in his office yesterday and I was told via text to my personal cell if I didn't show up I would be charged an office call and that if I am left waiting i would be billing there office for my time as I responded to the text they sent. At that point she stepped out of the exam room and seconds later Larry Dougherty DDS and his assistant returned. First thing I told him was it would be best if he closed the doors to the exam room we were in so that his other patients and employees did not hear what I was going to tell him. (I felt lead by the Lord to help this man rather than post a bad rating hurting his business revenue, so certainly I didn't want his patients to here this.) He did close the door sat down and acted like he had no idea why I was there asking what my dental issue was. I asked him if he was informed about the prior day, he said "a little" so i explained the whole thing. He stood up said I don't have to listen to this and I said to him calmly you might want to calm down and listen and that I was there as help him and not hurt him and I didn't think he wanted his first yelp review to be a one star. He told me you are not going to threaten me in my office and that we needed to leave NOW! At this point his wife Ana Paula Ferraz-Dougherty DDS quickly appears at the door so with my Pa walking in front of me, this "doctor" and his wife Ana were walking so close on my heals Larry actually stepped on my shoe. I did at that point turn and challenge him to touch me again, because I felt threatened by his aggressive behavior and loud tone. He again loudly told me you just need to leave now and get out of his office. So we continued and exited. I called Rolling oaks dental with my insurance information in front of me to schedule an appointment. The lady took my name, phone number and appointment. I asked her to take my Insurance information so that I could make sure it was accepted before the appointment. She said "no I don't need it now, it only takes a few minutes to enter in when you get here." I said "ok do you at least accept Aetna" she said "yes we do". I thought nothing of it until I got to the office sat down to begin my exam and was told they do not accept my insurance but they have a new patient special for $150! I took off the blue dentist bib and walked right out the front door. I had to take time off work to make the appointment what a waste of time. How unprofessional of the front staff not to check these types of things especially when I had it available when I called in. waist of my time and any other patients who could have had my time slot. I forgot to mention that there was a bit of tension at the front desk between what seemed to be the office manager and the front desk employees regarding scheduling. I had to listen to it while I was filling out my paper work. One other thing that caught me off guard was their HIPPA practices. They ask you the HIPPA questions fill them in on their computer (that you can't see) then ask you to sign a document that you cannot see what they filled in. When I told the front desk worker that it was odd that I was signing a document that she filled in and I couldn't see she tried to refer me back to their written explanation of HIPPA. I understand what HIPPA is I don't need to be sent back to the Print out regarding the release form. I was telling her she could have filled in God knows what and her she was asking me to sign something I can't see. She seemed to think I was giving her attitude had the tables been turned I'd like to know how comfortable she would be signing something that she couldn't see. Don't waste your time calling to schedule an appointment since you will also be treated as if you are wasting their time when you call! read more

I have been going to Rolling Oaks Dental for a couple of years now, and can honestly say this is the only dentist office I have ever felt like recommending. They are a family dentist office run by two dentists that are married. I have seen both Drs. For dental work (root canal and crown), as well as regular teeth cleaning, and would recommend both of them. Mr. Dr. Dougherty is so friendly and always telling jokes while he sees you, so you feel very relaxed. Mrs. Dr. Dougherty is also an excellent dentist, who is a spokeswoman for the American Dental Association, and such a sweet woman. They have a very modern office with the latest equipment, and feel like they are the best dentists to see! As I have read other reviews of their practice I noticed some people complaining about not being able to get pricing up front, and I don't think they understand that dentists can't give out how much your treatment is going to cost without seeing you first and knowing how long they are going to need to see you and what that entails (not every filling or root canal is the same). That being said, I don't think that Rolling Oaks Dental is the cheapest dentist office you could possibly find, but they definitely aren't the most expensive either. I would rather have my dental work done by someone I can trust though, who might cost me a couple extra bucks, than go to the cheapest dentist and wind up in extra pain or with the dentist suggesting fillings, or teeth being pulled without it being necessary. Trust me I have been to a couple of dentists that I would never return to, and it wasn't because they cost a couple dollars more than the next guy. DON'T GO TO THIS DENTIST! I called Rolling Oaks Dental and asked if they could remove a infected back molar in a 5 year old mouth the lady on the phone told me yes we needed to come in right away. We made an appointment for that afternoon. The nurse tried putting 1 of the 2 bitting X-ray in his mouth and my son gaged multiple times. So she said there is no way we can do that his mouth is to little. When the Dr. Dougherty walked in he said my sons teeth needed to be brushed so I offered to go brush them in the bathroom he said no its okay I got it. My son right before we got called back snuck a goldfish in the waiting room. Dr. Dougherty got a small tooth brush and got some regular tooth paste and brushed his teeth for a total of 1 minute. On the bill they claimed it was a D1120 ($83.00) Cleaning. Cleaning includes tooth scaling and tooth polishing and debridement if too much tartar has accumulated. This involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth and is often done by a dental hygienist or dentist. So they charged my insurance $349.00 to tell me that because of his age they could not remove the tooth and I would need to go see a Pediatric Dentist. read more

:-( I really wanted to rate them better, in the past, I have referred many friends and colleagues to them for dental care and treatment, even my own parents. I am currently pregnant and initially started going to Rolling Oaks Dental because they were close to my home, I continued going to them even after I moved about 15-20 minutes away. However, I recently (literally 7 hours ago) had a crown fail. It dropped out of my gum as if it had never been anchored in. I had a root canal and on that particular tooth developed an abscess a few weeks later, I had to make another appointment, be placed on antibiotics and then make yet another appointment to be told that I had an extra root canal that was overlooked. Dr. Ferrz-Doughtery proceeded to fix the issue by drilling into the crown I had and conducting yet another root canal. Here we are a few years down the line and I'm holding a porcelain crown in my hand with God knows what in it and having to go back to my old dentist because all of the restorative work they've done is still holding up, but this one failed in a matter of years. read more

After several years of using this dentist and referring friends, I am currently searching for a new dentist. I was very disappointed to learn that they had not been using my insurance copayments, but had been overcharging me. Just my last 3 visits amounted to over $600. They would only credit me $117.00. I have no idea what the amount would be for the last several years. I assumed I was being charged the correct copayment each time since my insurance was listed on the paperwork. Had I not questioned my bill, I would never had known. I am now wondering if all the work that was done was even needed. I am 70 years old and he has been trying to convince me that I need braces to make his job of cleaning my teeth easier. It seems that after they get you as a regular patient, then your "needs" increase along with your costs. I am very disappointed because I thought this was a reputable place.
