Peanut Butter and Jam (Yeast) -The precise whimsy that characterizes donut plant: a tongue-in-cheek reference to an American staple reimagined in donut form. The reimagination is executed at a high level (which is characteristic of all DP donuts in all locations (and even the ones you find in Dean & DeLuca) 2. Tres Leches (Cake) -Subtle and balanced, the perfect coating. You don't find a donut like this anywhere else. 3. Carrot Cake (Cake) -Subtle is hard to achieve in a donut-typically a donut would just try to overwhelm you with sugar, but DP's quality and attention to detail allows for flavors like TL & CC. The CC executes this subtle taste as well as the Tres Leches but I prefer the TL flavor. 4. Blueberry & Cream (Doughseed) - Incredibly balanced flavor - the Vanilla cream is exceptional, not too rich, great consistency but does not overpower the fruit. 5. Blueberry (Yeast) -Standard cakey donut for when you have a fruit craving 6. Jackfruit (Cake) -Jackfruit itself is often overpowering (although great for relief on hot days) but as expected DP has used it in a subtle fashion for a high level of execution. 7. Coffee Cake (Cake) -A well executed take on a classic, but you come to DP for the creativity. 8. Blackout (Cake) -Just too rich, too much chocolate. I respect what they are trying to do here but as stated the subtlety of flavor that the cake donut provides and this one is too much for me. 9. Peanut Butter Banana (Yeast) -I know the balance of this review speaks quite a bit about subtlety, so I'm going to backtrack a little bit here. The banana flavor is too subtle here and gets overpowered by the peanut butter. 10. Pecan Praline (Beignet) -I guess I was expecting Cafe du Monde and got something different--will have to revisit. 11. Valrhona Chocolate (Yeast) -See Blackout above w/r/t chocolate--it's just too much. read more

For a person who loves creme brûlée like me, I knew I had to try the doughnut plant's creme brûlée doughseed. We also got the wild blueberry, tres leche, and the vanilla bean and raspberry filled doughnut. Naturally, my favorite was the creme brûlée; I really liked the added crunch thats on top of the doughnut, but the blueberry was a close second. It definitely isn't as good as the blueberry doughnuts at M&M's in Anaheim, CA. but it was still really good. The tres leche was personally a little too sweet for me and it was probably my least favorite of the three that I tried since I didn't get a chance to try the filled doughnut. I wouldn't say that they're the best doughnuts I've ever had, but I will probably be back because it's so close to my house. read more

A lot of hype, for a slightly overpriced, strange donut. Virtually everything on the menu has fruit, so if you don't like fruit, you probably won't be satisfied with the options here. I came here and got the chocolate chocolate yeast donut. The flavor was great, but the yeast texture is like biting into a soft fluffy donut that ends in a wet crunch in your mouth, mysteriously. The coffee here is very bitter and overpowering, although they did have decaf so I will give them that. The building and atmosphere is really cool here, but they have probably the worst person shouting out orders-- probably the most graveled nasally voice I've ever heard. Overall, if the atmosphere and building wasn't so cool, I would have disliked this place for all the other distasteful reasons. Wouldn't recommend. read more

I really enjoyed stopping by this location, such a diverse crowd. The staff was very nice. The donuts were great, I couldn't come and not try the Creme Brûlée donut, it was interesting. I had recently given up on doughnuts. More and more, every doughnut I tried was a disappointment. The doughnuts I tasted here will now be my standard to compare all other doughnuts. I tried the tre leche doughnut and the blackberry jam filled. The tre leche is a holed doughnut with custard filling the cake doughnut. It was delicious, it had the perfect ratio of custard to cake. The Blackberry jam is amazing, sweet, tangy, the best doughnut jam I've had. Again, this is a holed (square) doughnut that had jam filling throughout. The ratio was perfect. This was a fluffier dough than the tre leche. Excellent. The only thing I did not enjoy here was the coffee. A bit burnt and overly bitter. Similar to starbucks. After I spent a decent amount of time surveying the options, I unknowingly wound up ordering 2 Doughnut Plant originals: Creme Brulee doughnut: Fantastic. Get it. Get it now. The square-shaped doughnut tastes like a french cruller topped with hard caramel and filled with vanilla custard. Friggin' delicious, that is. Blackout doughnut: It didn't take much persuading from my cashier to switch from the Triple Chocolate Cake doughnut to the Blackout. He said it was basically the same but filled with chocolate pudding. Sold! Absolutely love this place. I wanted to try their new strawberry yeast doughnut but I was too late and they were already sold out. However, the staff recommended me other doughnuts/doughnut seeds. Their service was great, quickly done, and very helpful. I ordered my usual vanilla bean yeast doughnut seed and tried their pistachio yeast doughnut seed. The pistachio yeast doughnut seed blew me away! All of the doughnut seeds contain fillings on the inside. Usually I would never order jelly/cream filled doughnuts because they are overpowering with sugar. I'm not a fan of food that contains a lot of sugar. HOWEVER! This pistachio yeast doughnut seed was the bomb. It was so delicious. The filling was not too sweet. It had a crunchy texture from the pistachio on outside. Another veritable NYC institution which I had actually never tried! My friend has been raving about Doughnut Plant for ages but I'm always kind of "meh" about doughnuts since I just feel like my calories are better spent elsewhere... Well, that attitude was quickly adjusted when I came here. These are no Dunkin' Donuts! The Flatbush Avenue location is a cute corner joint which showcases Doughnut Plant's impressive and drool-inducing selection of the fried treat in all forms. They've got your classic Homer Simpson-type pink round doughnuts, beignets, cinnamon buns, filled doughnuts and more. I tried a praline beignet which was notable not only for how good it tasted, but for how light it was (that's impressive!). Paired with a strong cup of Intelligensia coffee, it definitely made for a nice sweet break. The doughnut menu here changes regularly and seasonally, so it's probably worth coming back to try multiple ones. Some people might take issue that most of the doughnuts are $3+ each, but I think that's both expected and makes coming here seem like more of a treat rather than a regular old place (maybe I'm just finding ways to convince myself that $3 for a doughnut isn't excessive). I was walking in the neighborhood, then I spotted this well known doughnut cafe. Too tempting, it's passed lunch time and I haven't ate... I chose the Cashew & orange blossom filled doughseed. The dough is chewy, coated with an orange blossom glaze and covered with cashew nuts. Inside, there's an orange blossom flavored cream. To me, this is the size of an average doughnut, but they call it a seed. And then I saw the Peanut Butter-Banana Cream-Filled. It's gigantic like the size of a sandwich! Coated with peanuts and a peanut glaze, it's filled with a generous amount of banana cream. Everything is huge here, from the doughseeds to the doughnuts. The place lives up to its name...its like an episode of the simpsons: everyone is in a line, its packed and busy--minus the nuclear stuff. Not for nothing, but if you have a donut place you may wanna have a wider aisle. They have a pretty awesome selection. I highly recommend the pb and banana filled square donut. This is what I like to refer to as a Designer Doughnut Shop. Interesting (pricey) doughnuts with new rotating flavors of the month. The space is small, so it can get prettttty crowded, especially since this location is brand spankin new....and who doesn't love donuts? No one. That's who. I have yet to try all the donuts, but I would assume it to be nothing short of magical. Of the ones I've tried I LOVE the orange blossom and cashew doughseed. The chocolate yeast doughnut is also the perfect combo of soft chewiness and good chocolate flavor. I've tried the famous creme brulee doughseed but it was def not my favorite and it's one of the more expensive items on the menu. If memory serves correctly, it's $3.50 for the mini doughnut. It had a weird aftertaste to me and didn't taste like the fresh creamy creme brulee I'm used to. I'm willing to give it another shot though. The large filled donuts I've tried (PB+J, PB+banana creme) are good. Amazing? Not quite. But definitely good. I had a bite of the coconut creme something or other and I think I liked that one best. I was down by the Barclays Center the other day and this joint caught my eye. Upscale, it is. It's a spin on donuts that has to be done. I really think they've got something in there! I didn't get much, but I never had a yeast donut. Kind've a tough act really. I had the Strawberry and the Mocha. Wildly messy. Hard to eat, really. Chewy, slippery, bits flying off all over. It's all over your hand at the very least. Quite large as well. I ate the Strawberry first. It was all I could handle. One bite of the Mocha Yeasty one and in the trash it went. I was smart enough to get black coffee with it. The coffee cut through the sugar pretty well. It got me so messed up I was grateful for a bit of water to wash up so I could leave. I visited this location on the first day that it opened, so my review is definitely a bit delayed, but I may be alone when saying that based off of my experience, I don't think this place is worth all the hype. I am a huge doughnut fan and love the really fluffy ones that offer no frills or fillings (especially no fillings, bleh!), so upon entering this small location, densely populated with baby carriages and fellow doughnut lovers, I came to realize that maybe these weren't really my type of doughnuts, but still decided to give it a try. I got a special edition marzipan star doughnut, as it looked like the kind that I would enjoy most, but something about it was just off. The almond flavor was too prominent for my taste and it was just a little too sweet. Something about its texture also threw me off because it was both soft and chewy all at once and towards the end I had a difficult time finishing the last few bites. It's also really difficult to wrap my head around paying about $4 for something I'm going to finish in under 5 minutes, but I suppose that's the price you pay for artisinal doughnuts these days. Overall, I may give this place one more shot, but there are plenty of other great doughnut shops around the city that I know have exactly what I'm looking for. read more

The Blackout took me two days to finish because it was a lot of chocolate and sweet. But I loved it. As we left today, my little boy opened the door, and a thuggish young woman lounging next next to the door, with her foot sprawled in front of it, snarled at him to "watch it." "Maybe you should move your foot," I pointed out,at which point she jumped up and started screaming "fuck you, motherfucking asshole." Just tried their coconut creme doughnut... Holly cow this thing is delicious, and I love the display, their donuts are closed off behind a glass case like something out of a museum or jewelry store. If you haven't been to Dough in Flatiron, you're gonna know why tristan and I felt a way about this place. Honestly, dough set a high standard for us (based off ambiance and donut quality). Here, the ambiance is casual and people are on their laptops doing work or chilling out by themselves. It's basically like a mini starbucks, but Dough has just one large table where everyone sits closely and eats their donut (more intimate). Back to the main point of the review: the menu, itself, is confusing and so extra. yeast, cake, etc.? That's nice, but can you just tell me what the flavors are. Tristan and I had the holiday Marzipan donut (almond flavor). It was pretty good but didn't fill me up and wasn't sweet enough. The space is small but designed well--seating along the entire front window. The line moves quickly and the service is friendly. There are a few different types of treats--15 or so to choose from in a clear glass case so you know what you're in for. The smaller donuts are dense--no flour and more cake-like. The bigger ones are a little more chewy--they have yeast and have had time to rise. We tried one of each, the chocolate "yeast" and the blueberry "cake". DELICIOUS--the blueberry was a clear favorite. There were also smaller puff filled things I will try next time. Total bill without tip was $9 including a milk.
