A small cafe, which we drive past before we realized it was there but well worth the stop in Bay City, just off Hwy 101. Family owned for over 25 years, so they are doing something right. I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs with a biscuit, which was for all made from scratch. One of the few times I had to use a knife to cut the steak. It was very good. The gravy had excellent flavor but was a bit thin, although the hash browns and biscuits soaked it up nicely. My wife ordered the Denver omelet which was delicious with rustic chopped peppers and onions. The service was very friendly and food was prepared in a timely manner. I am a huge fan of breakfast food, and this Diner definitely ranks in my Top 5 breakfast joints from around the world. Don't sleep on this gem! If you aren't careful, you will drive right past this cornerstone of the American frontier! The small "mom and pop" atmosphere is stunning and gives one the feeling of visiting close relatives on their long journey. The only way to describe our service is to use Robert Southey's phrase in his tale of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears"...it was JUST RIGHT. Our server was well attuned to conversation, knowing when to check in, using the appropriate amount of "energy" without going overboard, while still being confident and genuine. While the atmosphere and service should always be important mentions of any establishment, let's talk about the true star of the show...THE FOOD! Honestly, it was truly some of the best breakfast food I've ever had. The portion sizes were nice while not being too much (often breakfast establishments give you WAY too much). The chicken fried steak was CLEARLY handmade and included a lot of LOVE. It was a piece of heaven with every bite! Normally, I ask for no hash browns as breakfast places typically give you too much to eat, and they are usually soggy and sad (or soggy and burnt), but per the 5-star rating Downie's Diner does it right. I am happy to say they were crispy without being burnt, and not a single sad soggy hash in the mix! I come through this area at least once a year to satisfy my crab catching needs, and will now be adding this fabulous establishments as a must on my trip in. During a vacation to the Oregon coast in mid-June, my friend and I enjoyed a late breakfast at this tiny, family-owned diner. I had the fried oysters with 2 eggs, hash browns and an English muffin. My friend had eggs Benedict on a homemade crab cake though she was tempted by the special - a pork chop and eggs. We shared an amazing, very large cinnamon roll dripping with icing for dessert. Our food was delicious and obviously made from scratch. All the baked goods - pies mostly, plus the cinnamon rolls - are homemade by the mother, Karen, and her 2 daughters, Joanie and Jenn, who own and run the restaurant. Now for the food, the buttermilk pancakes are so soft and fluffy, easy to cut and they melt in your mouth. We stopped in on 4th of July weekend and sat down immediately . The food was incredible and hospitality was on point . We felt welcome from the moment we walked in. It exceeded our expectations. The biscuits and gravy were light and fluffy and the gravy was creamy and delicious. We also ordered a cinnamon roll that was was huge. Thank goodness for the internet I would have never found this place. The service was sharp and precise. The portions were large but not to large. Everything tasted great and fresh. Good thing she ordered only one cuz it was huge and very tasty. Grandkid no. 1 ordered a cheeseburger for breakfast and thought it was good but too much mayonnaise. Grandkid no. 2 got strawberry pancakes and thought they were great. Very small place. Only 5-6 tables and counter service. So, go early and don't bring a bunch of people. This is exactly what I'm looking for in a breakfast place. They have homemade pies they make big homemade cinnamon rolls they have fun specials with local ingredients and seasonal things in pies. The first day I had a clam it's almost like a pancake it was a special. And they were slices of clams smushed with pieces of potato and cheese and then lightly fried on a flat grill. They were served with hash browns and toast and a side of eggs and it was an outstanding fun breakfast for the coast. Just when I thought they can't top that the second day they had a crab cake Benedict special. The crab cakes were very large and very fresh I would guess they were handmade there and the eggs were perfect and the Benedict was beautifully creamy and they gave me a side of lemon to put on the crab it was an amazing breakfast. So if you're driving down the 101 definitely stop in here and have some pie or lunch or breakfast. Service is fantastic. Parking is either out front or on the street. And this is a great little gem they have an amazingly clean bathroom in between them and the store behind them. It looks like it a bathroom at home. read more

It's located next to a supermarket and has dine in (but only 3 tables), but we had a dog with us and they don't allow dogs inside, so we did takeout. Apparently you can call up and order any kind of pie that you want and they will make it and send you home with the glass pie dish and just ask that you return it when you finish the pie. Best pancakes EVER! I'm a pancake lover & when I find a good pancake, all is right with the world for that moment. I was expecting good, but these pancakes were great! Fluffy & HUGE they absorbed the butter & syrup like a dream. We had spent a few days in Rockaway & stopped here on our way back to Portland.
