On our way home to Seattle after touring the Oregon Coast, we went looking for a locally owned spot--a place with roots in Tillamook rather than a tourist-facing gloss. The Fern Café fit the bill immediately, and by the end of the meal, it had more than justified the detour. The Breakfast Skillet arrived in impressive form: a generous layer of hashbrowns with crisp edges, topped with scrambled eggs folded with melted Tillamook cheese and well-seasoned sausage. A light pour of gravy brought the elements together without overwhelming them, and every bite carried the kind of balance you only get from a kitchen that knows its own dishes inside out. It was hearty, deeply satisfying, and, for once, more than I could finish--a rare outcome for someone who almost never leaves food behind. I read that some diners have experienced long waits between ordering and being served. For us, the only delay was before seating, caused by a line of locals paying for their meals rather than a lack of tables. It was simply unfortunate timing, but those departing were nice enough to let us pass to the front so we could be seated while awaiting my wife's return. From there, the food arrived with remarkable speed, as if the kitchen had been expecting us. The teenager in our group ordered the Fern burger--thick, juicy, and served with a mountain of fries that could have satisfied a Sasquatch. It looked every bit as good as it tasted, judging by how quickly it vanished. My wife went with the soup-and-half-sandwich combo, but that's her fault. I'll admit I paid no attention to it; the skillet held my focus entirely. Prices here are remarkably reasonable given the portion sizes, though my wife was less impressed--perhaps a reminder that some menu choices are better suited to value than others. The service deserves special mention. Our waitress was fun and engaging without being overbearing, striking that rare balance of keeping conversation light while still moving things along efficiently. There's a confidence and warmth here that makes you feel at ease from the moment you sit down, and it's clear the staff take pride in making the experience pleasant without trying too hard. One gets the idea that the wait staff doesn't turn over frequently, that business is steady and loyal. As we were leaving, I noticed the doughnut counter--eight for $3--tempting, but impossible to consider after a breakfast of that scale. The Fern Café delivers exactly what travelers hope to find in a small-town diner: food made with care, portions that surprise, prices that make sense, and service that makes you feel like you've been there before. If you're passing through Tillamook, skip the chains and tourist traps. This is where you want to eat. Don't forget to take your pictures outside with the Sasquatch.

Okay -long story here. We've been vacationing in this area for decades and never ate here because 40 years ago my mother-in-law (a local) told us not to eat here. I figure if they are still in business (I'm assuming it's the same business), then they must have something going, and Mom's gone. So we decided to have breakfast there after two people recommended it to us. And I'm so glad we did. It's roomy and clean with lots of windows. They have an extensive menu. Although I was a little put off by the section with special charges (to go, split plates, substitutions). I opted for the eggs Benedict special and glad I did. It was the best I've had. Everything was cooked perfectly and the ratio of sauce to egg and ham was perfect. The Hubbs is the King of special orders and they got everything right. Chopped steak with no seasoning, medium rare, eggs over medium, extra crispy hash browns and triple-toasted English Muffin. The only thing not perfect was the English muffin- it was over-buttered. The server was very helpful and fairly attentive. It's now on my "must stop" list. Who knew!? Sorry, Mom!

A staple of Tillamook, located on N Main St (Highway 101). We came in at 10 o'clock a party of six. Was sat in a corner table. Lots of space. Service was friendly. The food did take a while, but everything came on at the same time which I appreciated. Large portions, flavorful and delicious.

Breakfast Skillet 3/5 stars. Sourdough bread was really good

We came here for breakfast. To set the stage, think Denny's food, it's a little better then that. You won't find some hidden food item that will blow your socks off. There, now you won't be disappointed eating here. Overall, the food was decent and the service was good. I can see where others complain about the wait times as if they are short staffed, it will be awhile. The winner goes to the French toast.

What a delightful surprise. Lin's was closed so then made our way to try this Cafe. It has been on the "to try" list for awhile and wish we'd stop by sooner. The staff was welcoming with smiles and prompt assistance. My Aunt and I both ordered the special..one getting finger steaks and the other popcorn chicken atop mashed potatoes smothered in gravy and cheese and side of freshly steamed brocolli (still perfectly crispy) It was the perfect comfort meal and even included a slice of pie. Loved every bite! The inside is so charming with curio cabinets with a varied and fun salt-n-pepper shaker collection. (Who knew there were ceramic Raiders helmet S&P shakers...so envious) Will definitely be back again and again.

Kind of like the feeling of coming home. The place was packed -- just a testament to their very good food and excellent drinks -- there was even a couple sitting outside and they had a fire going. Wish I had taken that photo. It was a really beautiful moment. The place was decorated and felt very holiday festive with small bright lights reflecting off the tin ceiling. Excited to have a couple of days on holiday here. Stopped in to pick up their latest version of fudge because Christian the Baker keeps evolving the art of fudge making...and you don't want to miss an iteration. Using the owner's grandfather's recipe as the base, he makes some of the best fudge in Oregon. Tonight I was told he decided to explore a Mediterranean approach and added nutty sesame to the fudge. The sharp but soft chocolate is a perfect compliment to a delicious drink on a cold, cold night. While I was waiting for the fudge to be packaged to take back to the fireplace in my room, I spied their latest culinary endeavor sitting in jars on the counter... and actually started salivating. They are now serving Pickled eggs. Incredible. When was the last time you had a pickled egg? When done right, pickled eggs are among the most satisfying and clean bite of delicious ungrilled, ungreasy proteins in the world. And the lounge has decided to serve two different kinds, so we might've died and gone to heaven. If you love eggs of every kind, as I do, boiled eggs hold a special place because they are hearty and compact and completely whole. So when you add a spices and acid to that perfection...it emerges as "wow." The service was attentive and thoughtful always, and I was told they're open New Year's Eve until 9.

To speak about Teardrop Lounge, I should probably start with this:…read more Ladies and gentlemen, I present my favorite cocktail bar. Not the best -- I'm not arrogant enough to claim that. I haven't been to every cocktail bar in Portland, and saying something is the best usually says more about your lack of experience than your conviction. But favorite? That I can stand behind. And I want to get that out of the way early, because of the amount of praise I'm about to pour on this place -- fully earned, completely intentional. The biggest crime here is that I only discovered it two weeks ago, after living in Portland for a year. It had been recommended to me countless times, and I ignored it. A mistake. A painful one. But now that I've found it, I don't plan on making that mistake again. I'm not typically an Old Fashioned drinker. In fact, I usually hate them. But somewhere between curiosity and too many episodes of Mad Men, I decided to try one anyway -- fully expecting to confirm my bias. Instead, it completely flipped me. Bright, almost citrus-forward in a way that felt unusual but entirely intentional. Balanced, smooth, just enough burn to remind you what you're drinking without overwhelming it. It was the first time I actually understood the appeal. I'm pretty sure I grew a few chest hairs that night. That alone would've been impressive. But it didn't stop there. The space is beautiful -- clean, intentional, but not cold. The staff are excellent: personable, engaged, and most importantly, authentic. Not scripted, not performative. The kind of people you actually want to talk to, and hopefully, eventually be on a first-name basis with. Now, all of that gets it close to a perfect score. But what pushes it over the edge -- what makes this place stick -- is the White Russian. One of the first drinks I ever had. My dad's drink. Not because of The Big Lebowski -- that came later -- but because it's just always been his thing. And at some point, it became mine too. Typically, when bars try to "elevate" a White Russian, they ruin it. They overthink it. Swap ingredients, tweak ratios, add unnecessary flair. And more often than not, it ends in disappointment. Teardrop does the opposite. They respect it -- but refine it. The coffee liqueur actually tastes like coffee. The heavy cream is properly integrated, not just dumped on top. The vodka -- whatever they're using -- is clean, present, and perfectly measured. There's a subtle complexity to it without losing what makes the drink what it is. It's the best White Russian I've ever had. No hesitation. I've gone back twice just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It wasn't. If someone asked me what my death row drink would be -- this specific cocktail, from this specific bar, is in the conversation. Easily. Teardrop Lounge doesn't just make great cocktails. It reminds you why cocktails matter in the first place. And that's why it's my favorite.

One of the best parts was how approachable the bartenders were. We asked for custom drinks based on our preferences, and both came out perfectly tailored. Creative without being weird, and strong without being sloppy. What really stood out was the price point. For the quality of cocktails, the prices felt very reasonable compared to similar craft cocktail bars in other cities. The vibe was also great -- relaxed, cozy, and not pretentious. It felt like a place where you could come for a special drink experience without feeling like you had to "perform" or order off a rigid menu. We liked it so much we actually came back a second time during our trip. Highly recommend if you're into well-crafted cocktails, friendly bartenders, and a laid-back but elevated atmosphere.

In the last couple of visits, though, it's different. My past history here prevents me from giving it a 2-star review. I know there has been a management change, and it shows. Some of my favorite staff have departed, seeking greener pastures. The reason for this review now is my most recent purchase ... a $17 glass of Pudding River Pinot Gris. When I found out the price as I cashed out, I felt robbed. I can drive less than 9 miles away and buy a whole bottle for $25. My previous glass of wine that evening was an $8 chardonnay from another local winery. I figured the Pinot Gris couldn't be much more than the Chard, especially one from Pudding River, which I've personally visited so I know their bottle prices. So, before you buy anything at the Fireside Lounge, ask the price. Don't be surprised (aka robbed) as I was.
