Dr. Patel and all his dentist are professional and have such a great "bedside" manner, which is rare with health care providers nowadays. Being in the health field, I was very happy to come across Dr. Patel and his staff's office. They greet you as soon as you come in and make you feel right at home. I had so many issues going on and they did not make me feel uncomfortable at ALL. I am disappointed that they don't take certain state insurances because that would really help me out financially, but stick with him because this office really knows how to give good results. Jackie the office manager helped me so much during my initial process because I was going through a cobra change that gave me a deadline of 13 days to get anything done and there was A LOT to be done. Liz also helped so much and help to accommodate me in many ways to help me make that deadline. The ladies in the front are always smiling and the assistants to the dentists are so good you can tell there is a bond there. I was totally unprepared for the series of unfortunate events I would experience with my first crown. This rating is 5+ because I am reviewing the practice which salvaged my tooth and belief there are skilled providers who genuinely have the best interests of their patients at heart. In the past, my health care employment settings afforded me the luxury of great inside referrals. Since moving to Chicago, I no longer have those luxuries and that has helped me learn an extremely valuable lesson about performing my due diligence before making any appointment. The original dental practice recommended to me by a friend had excruciatingly suboptimal reviews on multiple sites. The best ones collectively came from people not requiring much beyond a routine cleaning. Long story short, after tooth prep and final placement of the permanent crown, I literally had one problem after the next. In all fairness, no DMD, DDS or MD can guarantee complication-free procedures, but it's the skill in how he or she addresses those complications that makes all the difference to the patient. If I had done my research BEFORE that procedure, I can honestly say I would not have made my appointment with that practice. I found Downtown Dental on Yelp during an Internet search for best Chicago dentists. I was reassured by the number of 5-star reviews it had in comparison to all the other area dental practices, as well as the consistency and quality of feedback by reviewers. I quickly received an appointment. Dr. Patel evaluated my permanent crown as a second opinion as I continued to have pain, sensitivity, bite alignment and speech issues after multiple crown adjustments by the original dentist. My crown no longer had the contour attributes of the original molar and I was constantly reminded this foreign "thing" was in my mouth. I lost faith that returning for a third time to the original practice was going to resolve my symptoms. It was during Dr. Patel's evaluation that I first learned the crown was constructed of porcelain fused to metal. These are strong crowns but the metal blocks the dentist's view of the tooth structure underneath the crown on x-ray. Readers please keep this in mind when you talk with your dentist about the materials being used to make your crown. Gather all the information you need to fully understand and make informed choices about your care. If there are any problems with a crown after the fact, usually an x-ray provides valuable insight for troubleshooting. One drawback to a porcelain to metal crown is that tooth anatomy above the gum line cannot be visualized through a metal crown. Dr. Patel outlined an appropriate and conservative course of treatment geared toward salvaging the crown, eliminating the source of my pain and bite issues, and preventing me from incurring additional out of pocket costs to outright replace the crown. This approach earned my respect and was HUGE in terms of how Dr. Patel tried to work with circumstances beyond his control. I believe there is always risk to continue another provider's work, especially when the work was not of commensurate quality. My out of pocket cost was extremely fair. Dr. Kunath performed the root canal through the crown and Dr. Patel placed the filling and made a slight adjustment. The root canal process was not painful, both dentists were kind, compassionate, and precise. I could not believe how much better I felt within such a short period of time. I emailed some questions in the week following this procedure and each time Dr. Patel responded the same business day also by email with very reassuring information. When I started to worry about something I was feeling associated with that tooth, it was helpful to have someone I believed I could trust to request more information. The story ends as I ultimately chose to have this crown remade. Once again, Dr. Patel coordinated my care by Dr. Marriott and my realistic fees were discussed upfront. Within a two hour visit, I received a CEREC crown that was actually a great functional and color match to my original tooth. This technology knocks my socks off given the alternative of traditional crown placement. Dr. Marriott was funny, self assured and exact in his work. I actually laughed during the visit and felt like I had a carbon copy of my real tooth when I left. My new CEREC molar certainly looks and feels like the original and I will be forever grateful to EVERYONE at Downtown Dental who participated in my excellent care. The administrative staff, hygienists, assistants and dentists are ALL credits to their profession. OK, so I recently wrote a not-so-good review about a dental office I visited that I did NOT like. Go find that one to see why. However, I cannot say enough about Downtown Dental and how great I think they've been. This is what I was hoping to find after feeling so shamed and terrible after my visit to the other office. I haven't been to the dentist in many years and because of that fact (my own fault!) need kind of a lot of work done. I went to a dentist without a referral just because it was near my house - big mistake. I was told I needed about 14 fillings (to the tune of over $2,000) and was shamed for my long absence from dental care. I hightailed it out of there and got a referral from a coworker to Downtown Dental. Best decision in a long time. The first thing I was impressed by at DD was the space. It's quiet with a water feature in the front lobby and kind staff. Soothing and relaxing, not antiseptic or tiny and full of misbehaving children like SOME dental offices I know. Second, the technology used at this office proves it: the future is now. 360 degree jaw x-rays, digital photo and x-ray viewing and a digital camera that takes photos of your teeth that are then instantly viewable are all pretty awesome. Finally, Dr. Pettijohn has been amazing. I explained my childhood dental trauma (braces - twice and a dentist-obsessed mother who made us go so often that my teeth seemed in constant pain) and he was extremely sensitive. He noted EIGHT - not fourteen - cavities and didn't shame me or try to make me feel badly for how awfully I've neglected my smile. Let's just get the work done to get things back to normal, he said, and then we'll work on maintaining a beautiful smile. So today was the big test: I got my first two cavities filled. PIECE OF CAKE. Ha ha! Yes! Now I have had cavities filled before and can always remember grasping desperately onto the armrests of the chair because I could definitely feel pain through the novocain. Not this time. Dr. Pettijohn gave me several minimally-painful injections (that kind of felt like biting into a Dorito the wrong way and having it stab you in the gum.. not too terrible) and then let me sit for 5-10 minutes to allow the anesthetic to kick in. Really? Every other dentist I've been to has shot me with novocain and then immediately started drilling... maybe that had something to do with all the PAIN I felt!!! Anyway, less than an hour later Dr. Pettijohn was finished with my fillings and had taken before, during and after pictures and explained everything he did to me. I never saw how a filling was done before! So interesting! I actually SAW the tooth decay! Kind of gross, sure, but at least I know what was done, why and what it looks like. Makes me feel totally at peace with this office and like I don't have to constantly second guess what they're telling me to do. I am thrilled with this dentist and will more than happily go back for three more appointments to get the rest of my cavities filled. Cleaning/x-ray did seem a teensy bit expensive than a lot of other offices, but well worth it for dentists and other staff with such great bedside manner, amazing technology and peace of mind. Fillings are less expensive than at the other dentist I rated. I will tell EVERYONE all day long to come to Downtown Dental. So so glad I went. read more

I changed insurance and asked for a review of my treatment plan a month before the date of my actual appointment. I called 3 times to let them know about the change of insurance and for them to inquire about the cost of my treatment plan under my new insurance, nothing at all was done about it. I'm a dentist-fearer with combination gap and crowded teeth who hasn't seen a dentist between the ages of 17 and 26. Step 1: Husband writes script for lorazepam. Take it. Take some more. Step 2: Down two extra strength tylenol (tylenol won't make your gums bleed but will reduce feeling) From my first interaction with the receptionist who scheduled my appointment, I knew I had made the right choice. I told her about my issues--I hadn't been to the dentist in a long time, and while I had no pain, my gums were quite inflamed. I told her I was scared and wanted to know who I'd see and what decisions would be made at that appointment and she very calmly explained them all to me. Great! Monicah was my hygienist and was so fantastic. I told her about my fear and about my concerns with my gums and some brown spots I had seen between my teeth. I thought my teeth were ready to rot and fall out. She calmly explained that the inflamation was mostly from tartar that she'd be able to take care of today and that the spots were just coffee stains--not rot--and not anything worthy of worrying about. She was very gentle in cleaning my teeth. I have a very small mouth so sometimes that can be difficult. Despite all that tartar that needed to come off, I really felt no more than a few minor pinches here and there, and it was largely painless. I still would recommend the tylenol, though. It was certainly the best experience I'd ever had getting my teeth cleaned, and I've never needed them cleaned anywhere near this badly before. My teeth felt so good afterwards and it required so little strife that I'm looking forward to getting them cleaned again. I'm a convert! I saw Dr. Patel briefly as there wasn't much for us to talk about at that point. I had no cavities (yes, even after 9 years and a not-so-good looking mouth, that's possible). We discussed briefly getting invisalign, since my gum issues won't go away before I correct the crowding. But I don't want to do it before I can open a FSA account in September. He said there was no rush, gave me basic pricing, and said we'd talk about it at my 6-month check-up. No matter where I move in the country I don't want to go to a different dental office again! I had my first appointment with Dr. Patel at Downtown Dental yesterday. When I called I was able to get an appointment within a week for a check-up and cleaning. The place was easy to find and the staff were all very friendly. My dental hygienist, Jaimie, was not only very skilled at making me comfortable throughout the entire cleaning, but also a very warm and friendly person with whom I connected well. She made me want to engage in conversation, which is odd for someone shy like me, especially with cleaning implements my mouth. The digital x-rays went quickly and I got to see them instantly on the computer screen. Jaimie pointed out my "bling" - the silver fillings in my back teeth. After the cleaning, my teeth feel squeaky clean and healthy, with no soreness like I usually have after a cleaning (just very minor tenderness of gums, which seems normal after not having been to the dentist for two years). When Dr. Patel did his exam I was told that I had no new cavities and that my fillings would last another ten years. How odd that my last dentist (at Sears Dental - which I do NOT recommend) told me that the silver fillings would absolutely have to be replaced as soon as possible and it would cost me lots of money. Dr. Patel doesn't fix anything that doesn't need to be fixed or try to get you to do unnecessary procedures. He's the first dentist to tell me that a little sensitivity can be caused my many things and that it doesn't automatically mean you have a cavity. His analogy was this, "Sometimes you get an ache in your shoulder, but it doesn't necessarily mean you need surgery." He's a good dentist! He asks questions and listens to your needs and then makes his recommendations. In my case that meant just come back in six months for another cleaning. Highly recommended. The doctor and staff are all top rate, honest and friendly. And they take my insurance! read more

My wife had a sever pain because she lost one of her fillings. She was treated by Dr. Marriott for Root canal and Putting Cap. First day he took all xrays and suggested what needs to be done and how will it be done. He has good calm soothing voice and patience. Second visit is the actual process. They're prompt, they're accommodating of schedules, and when Dr. Patel goes through what work needs to be done, he looks at your insurance and helps break down what the cost implications are. Never had that from a dentist before. Also, their specialists are equally kind, courteous and quick. I had a route canal yesterday. Never want a route canal, but it was (almost) painless. It's tough to explain how much I've been through with dentists without cursing or getting really upset. With Dr. Patel and his crew, you get none of that. He's honest and very, very, thorough plus it's not just him; it's his entire staff. They always start your appointments on time, the office remolded just looks awesome and they always explain what they're going to do to you and are very caring while you're going through it. I needed a lot of work done (over 10G's) and at the time I really couldn't afford it, instead of talking to him about it because I was kind of embarrassed I decided to go to someone I knew and thought was good in another state; big mistake, HUGE! Less than 3 months after getting my work done from her I was in Dr. P's office getting it corrected. He wasn't judgmental or anything. As a matter of fact, I think he felt bad for me. He told me what needed to be done and I left the office. I called the family friend and went crazy because I needed more work done and my insurance was already maxed out for the year. She told me I didn't need all that Dr. P said, do one procedure, come back to her in a few weeks and she would fix the rest. I decided to keep my appointment with Dr. P and told him what the other doctor said. Again, he took the time to explain to me what he thought was right. I didn't know what to do, I was getting fed one thing from a "family friend" who I a, supposed to trust and another from him. If I were him I would have thrown me out of his office, I was so conflicted. Then while sitting in his chair, I took a look in the mirror, saw how terrible I looked and realized I was going with Dr. P because you really can't get much better than him and look what happened the last time I listened to someone else. If you can't afford it, talk to him. I'm sure he and the fine ladies at the front desk will figure something out for you. You need your teeth and it's not worth going through hell, time and time again if you get it done right the first time. I am sorry I was a pain Dr. P and it will never happen again. I had a root canal done yesterday--the fourth in my life, but the first at Downtown Dental. Dr. Kunath was great. I've never had a dentist explain so much of what he was doing. His chair-side manner was excellent, and I was shown Xrays before and after of the work. He let me know about options I have to save an another tooth as well. My regular dentist isn't at Downtown Dental, and Dr. Kunath still treated me like I'd been going there for years. There was a little ache later in the day of the procedure, nothing some ibuprofen couldn't fix. A day later, I'm feeling no pain in the root canal area. That's a first, and I've heard other people here mention less pain after root canals from DD. You can never predict these things, but I'm guessing your chances for less pain with DD are better than most. I'm working my hardest not to ever have a root canal again. They're not cheap, but I found DD's price to be fair and in line with the median cost mentioned by many dental sites online. My wife was recently charged a boatload for a root canal by another endo, so I appreciate that DD didn't jack up the price. If you live in Chicago, find yourself in a jam with tooth pain and your regular dentist doesn't do root canals, I would check out Downtown Dental. The reviews here really are right. read more

Ohhh myyyy Gosh! This was by far the BEST dentist appointment I've had in my life! As a new patient I was very curious as to how my visit to Dr. Patel's office would be. However, I was optimistic because I did read all the great reviews written about his office here on Yelp! When I arrived, they greeted me by name, welcomed me w/ smiles, and thanked me so much for coming to their office! I felt like I'd won the lottery or something because they were so nice! I barely sat down to open a magazine and they called my name right away (no waiting). And even when they took me to the room, they never left me sitting there for long periods of time! I only had a routine cleaning but they X-rayed my teeth, explained my x-rays to me as they showed them to me on their flat screen computer/tv thing-a-mah-bobbers! I am one to usually cry at my dental appointments due to extreme anxiety and fear. I usually get the "youre an adult and suck it up kind of treatment" or " its not going to hurt...and then it does. I love my dentist. Really! I started going to Downtown Dental several years back when I began to work downtown. Even on the first visit, I knew this was a good place: my dental assistant, Monicah, was friendly and helpful, and Dr. Patel was a good egg as well. I appreciate that both Monicah & Dr. Patel take the time to field questions and talk about how my teeth are doing. While Dr. Patel is usually in and out during my visits, I don't get the feeling that he doesn't have time to talk with me. Really good. In addition, the office got a major upgrade last year. The waiting room is beautiful (check out the water feature!) and the x-ray technology is state of the art. Nothing old and outdated here. Overall I'm really, really pleased with Downtown Dental. When I left home for college and, later, grad school, certain "big boy" responsibilities were unfortunately left unattended for quite a while. Dental care happened to be one of them. After a 4-year hiatus from the dentist's chair, my triumphant return was less than triumphant; I was told I needed a boatload of fillings and anywhere from 3-6 root canals, all of which would then need to be crowned. Clearly, this was not a pleasant day. However, Dr. Patel and the team at Downtown Dental have been amazing in working with me to get my teeth back on track. Not only have the treatments/procedures been top-notch, but they have patiently worked with me (and my insurance) to make billing and payment both understandable and affordable. Below are some other miscellaneous highlights: -Beautiful, modernly-appointed space in a convenient downtown location; easy to get to during work hours (e.g., on a lunch break) -Friendly and knowledgeable admin/billing staff -Cutting-edge technology, both in terms of systems and equipment. I want to emphasize this point because it's immensely clear that Dr. Patel reinvests a chunk of profits into capex to keep his practice at the forefront of dentistry. -Downtown Dental has an amazing team of dental professionals! I think I've seen everyone in the office at this point and they are all great. Dr. Funderburk is great and I'm pretty much indifferent to seeing her or Dr. Patel because they are both more than competent. Likewise, their in-house endodontist, Dr. Davenport, is Harvard-educated, highly-skilled and one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Finally, the periodontist, Dr. Kim, has done great work on my gums (specifically, several crown lengthenings) and is very genuine in how much she cares about her patients, even encouraging them to contact her via cell phone if they have any issues. -On a side note, if you have a preference for supporting culturally/ethnically diverse businesses, this is one of the most diverse groups of qualified professionals I've ever had the pleasure of crossing paths with. The thing I found really helpful was that the staff discussed the cost of everything and whether it would be covered under my insurance or not.
