Visited Downtown Diner for breakfast during a stay in Lake Placid after seeing the reviews here on Yelp. I ordered an omelette with cheese, sausage, and bacon -- the flavor was good and satisfying. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere was quiet. One drawback: when I sat down, I noticed a few crumbs and hair on the tabletop, which took away from the otherwise positive experience. We were in town for a couple of days, so we ate here twice. The first time we brought to go back to our motel room, the second time we ate at the restaurant. Our to go order, I had the corned beef hash and eggs, and my partner had the blueberry pancakes. She liked the pancakes very much. She said there were a good amount of blueberries in them, and everything tasted very good. The corned beef hash was delicious. The corned beef was tender, the potatoes in the hash were Tender and tasty,, and the eggs were perfectly over easy. The one problem I had, was instead of potatoes on the side, I asked for fruit. For a very small cup of fruit, I was charged $3.50. I wish I would've been told about the upcharge over the phone, and I would've probably just picked the potatoes instead. The fruit was good, I just had a problem with not being told about it. The next day, we ate at the restaurant, and again, everything was very good. My partner had the grilled cheese sandwich, which again she liked a lot. She said there was a very good amount of cheese, and it was just delicious. I was excited to see that they have poutine on the menu! I love poutine. Lake Placid it's not that far from Canada, and they do get their share of Canadian tourists, ergo, poutine! The fries were crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside, the gravy was nice and Rich, and there was a very good amount of the cheese curds. I loved it very much. I love this spot! I've been here many times with family. The staff is always friendly and attentive. It's a busy place in the mornings, but you will be seated very quickly. My son and I are in town for the ECAC hockey tournament to celebrate his birthday. We Walked down to the diner and it was fairly crowded but we got seated right away. Menu had quite a few selections and looked like the food would be good. The only problem was we were initially seated and given a couple of waters but then we sat for 20-30 minutes. No one would wait on us. Tried to get the attention of the person who sat us down but he wouldn't even make eye contact. We eventually gave up and got up and left. Was disappointing as the menu looked good. I will say the water was delicious so I'm giving it 1 star. I really like this place but it has gone down. First let's start with the food. It was fine nothing special. They used to serve home fries but they replaced it with mediocre hash browns. The eggs were eggs nothing of interest. The toast and pancakes were fine, not great. The server and service really brought back a star. The food came decently fast and the server was nice. Also the coffee and drinks came back is seconds!(ok maybe I'm exaggerating) the inside was a classic diner look, something you'd find in other places. The price was also a stare giver. Loved this place. The hostess and host were both super friendly and fun. Waitress was nice. Atmosphere is funky and cool, loved all the kitschy decor, especially the colorful chandeliers. It was BUSY so service was a little slow, but it was mid morning on a Sunday so I totally expected that. Don't be fooled by the exterior, this is a hidden gem in the heart of Lake Placid. If you are looking for a great breakfast place - look no further! We are large family group of 16 & upon sitting down to our table we were warmly greeted by Chef Woods who purposely made his way from the kitchen to our table to welcome us to the restaurant & mention that he hopes that we enjoy our meal. We order breakfast, our pictures are attached, and the food was fresh & delicious. Our eggs were made to order & perfectly prepared. Our omelettes were fluffy & light. Pancakes & French toast were delicious- light, buttery & fluffy. Menu is small but covered what typically is ordered. Prices were good & provided value to what you received. The meal was immediately prepared & serviced hot. Once we finished our meal Chef Woods emerged from the kitchen once again to enquire how our meal was. He clearly takes pride in what he serves & it shows & we appreciate it. We have been coming to the Lake Placid for over 20 years & we struggle with where we can go with our family for a good meal to start our day. Many of the other options around town are a complete miss in my opinion regardless of their ratings. I almost question where they get the rating in the 1st place b/c the food that is serviced is over priced, subpar at best & management is almost annoyed you are there with a large group. Be aware of the other breakfast spots from the most exclusive to the trendy others. Our experience at Downtown Diner was overall an A+ so much we retuned for a 2nd try the next morning only to have another fantastic meal & we can't wait to return next year! Excellent un-pretentious quick breakfast/ lunch spot. J and I launched in around 1130 on a Saturday. Were seated immediately. Woods, our server, was perfectly personable. I got the 1/2 grilled cheese and cup of soup of the day, which was broccoli/ cheese. This was the best grilled cheese I've ever had. Buttery, perfectly grilled and they didn't squish it down. The soup was delicious, appeared housemade and was nice and hot. J got an omelet with sausage, bacon, and cheddar and it was huge and yummy. The toast was generously buttered. I've been here a long time ago and believe I remember it being good but yesterday was atrocious. Stood waiting to be seated for 5 minutes. Nobody even acknowledged our presence even while walking past us. Finally seated with menus and waited 16 minutes before we decided to leave. No one even said anything to us as we left. I know they were busy but if we had been offered a coffee we could have waited. And the booth they sat us at in the corner had Christmas lights draped across the bench seat. A stop on the way through town, this family of five found just the breakfast spot we were craving. Hot coffee, friendly staff, simple but plentiful menu. The pancakes are HUGE, made for sharing. Biscuits and gravy (needed salt and pepper added at the table), choice of bacon, sausage (pattie's or links, both delish!) or ham to go with eggs, hash browns, toast and either a pancake or French toast. Chose the French toast at the suggestion of other reviews and it was phenomenal! Cooked-through brioche bread with just enough "crisp" to it. This little diner in the heart of Lake Placid was so simple and outdated but brought back so many feelings of nostalgia. The service was great, our server was new but was being assisted. They both did a fantastic job and were very attentive. I had the brioche French toast and paid the extra for the "real maple syrup". The French toast was delicious and very filling. We went here for lunch between classes at a conference in town and there were only a few people in the restaurant at lunchtime, so I was a little concerned, but I love diners and a clean dive is usually where you find the best home made meals. For me, the Gyro was the obvious choice in this Greek/American diner. They offered it with chicken or traditional meat, so of course I went for traditional. It was one of the best I've had. I really enjoyed the freshness of the ingredients and the tzatziki sauces was perfect. They served it with homemade potato chips that were crisp, dark and flavorful. Very disappointed. We were in town and wanted a good diner this place looked great. We walked in and the couple wait staff just looked at us. There was no sign to seat yourself or to wait. So we seated ourselves at the counter and all the wait staff just looked at us everytime they were behind the counter. Not ONCE did anyone say anything to us. The decoration was a little odd. Purple ceilings, blue seats and half of them are all duct taped up with rainbow duct tape. Either way you come To eat more importantly. Probably about 20+ tables at this place. The menu is large too and they are open 7-2pm everyday it says. For food I got an omelet and pancakes. The omelet is large. Fresh and filling. The omelet alone may fill some people up. The toast was also so fresh and thick. Some of the better toast I've had anywhere. The pancakes (silver dollar) were nothing special. The other person I went with got bacon which looked to be crispy and he said it was really good as well. For a small town, this place does a great job dishing out some pretty high quality food. Mixed experience today. Positives: seated quickly, the omelets were delicious and cooked perfectly. Very nice bread for the toast. Negatives: Hash browns were not cooked thoroughly and were cold. I ordered an omelet with mushrooms, spinach, and cheddar, but got one with spinach, feta, and cheddar. Our food was left under the warmer for 5-10 minutes, meanwhile our waitress cleared tables and did other things. I'm sure low staffing had something to do with the issues. read more
