The place was surprisingly busy. Parking lot was full, and inside there was a 20 min wait for food. The place isn't exactly what you would say is "clean" everything is old, including the staff. Looks like it's just a couple, with the wife handling the counter and husband doing the cooking. She definitely has a attitude and friendly isn't here. You don't come here for the service lol The food was okay. I don't get the praise. Sour dough was decent and pancakes were good. The issue is the cleanlyness of the establishment. The water bottles they have had black mold on the inside so be careful. We ended up buying bottled drinks instead. Took a chance with the coffee and it was decent. My biggest concern is if this is dirty what else is we can't see. Sadly I'd probably just go to McDonald's up the road or pay for hotel food across the street read more

Eerie atmosphere with a little sass from the person taking my order. Food made up for it though

Hmmm. Stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday in a town hopping with locals and tourists looking for lunch. Many places in the area were closed on Wednesdays and seemed to be plagued with the same staffing shortages happening all over the country. The deli was not overly crowded, but did have a steady stream of customers. We ordered two sandwiches and what was described as a "meal sized" salad with an add on of grilled chicken. We also added a salad dressing that had an upcharge of $1. When we were ordering at the counter the woman taking our order just seemed utterly irritated. Understanding that working in food service right now can be particularly stressful, we were gentle and tried to smile and connect to lighten the mood. This did not work. The sandwiches were good. The salad was on a dessert sized plate and had 4 tiny pieces of chicken. The gorgonzola dressing was served in a small paper side cup and probably amounted to just over one generous tablespoon. I did ask for more and was not charged for that. We needed to return to the counter a few times to request more dressing and an additional side salad and each time the reception on the other side of the counter was the same. read more

Stopped by here for a couple of turkey sandwiches to go. The place looks like it's been around for decades. The two employees who are older must be a married couple that have been with each other for decades with the way they talk to each other lol. Prices aren't bad and look like they don't change that much over the years. Looks to have plenty of bread options. Breakfast only on Sundays. Plenty of parking in the back of the building. If you want service with a smile, don't come here, but if you want a good sandwich, this place will do the trick. read more

The food was solid. My two friends and I got there minutes before opening and it felt deserted. We called to make sure they actually open at 9am. We were waiting with two elderly and they recommended trying the sourdough pancakes. We got in by 9:05 and by 9:30 the whole place was packed. People say the woman is rude and I see that. Her attitude was dependent on how busy she was. When we first arrived and stood inside by the door, she teased us for not coming to the cash register to order food. The elderly ordered first and when we tried to order immediately after, she scolded us to wait. We each got the mountain man combo. I asked if I could get sourdough pancakes in the combo and I eventually got my way. The sourdough pancakes tasted like sourdough while being just grainy enough to count as pancakes. I liked it. We were supposed to get toast with our combos and when we asked, she said, "Well it normally does. Do you want it?" ...what? We got fresh semolina bread, and It was worth it. One friend felt like he was being punished for placing an order at the restaurant. I was laughing inside because nothing made sense. Good thing we were mentally prepared for these issues because she could have soured our moods instantly. It was hilarious how accurate the customer service reviews were. We had a great time getting mixed feelings between attitude and food. While we were terrified at times, the food was great and that is a fact. read more

Sourdough is my jam so I was very excited to stop for breakfast. From reading the reviews, I was anticipating terrible service, but the lady serving us was friendly and helpful. We chatted with a regular who informed us that the woman working (owner?) was his go-to to select his bread choice. So naturally I looked to her as well. She went through which breads were softer/crusty. With her help I settled on a bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on sesame seed semolina bread. The bread is fantastic! Coffee is self serve and drinks are available in a side cooler. Very homey and casual. I definitely want to check out the lunch sandwiches next time- they sound amazing and on that bread!...next level sandwich!!! I will note that when I stopped in there were only 2 people working so if it got busy you will need a little patience. The woman (mentioned in numerous reviews) was direct but by no means would I call her rude. Definitely give this deli a shot! You will not be disappointed. read more

Stopped by here on our way out of Lake Placid to get a breakfast sandwich alternative to McDonalds. The sandwiches were made to order and we each got a bacon egg and cheese - the woman who took our order recommended the multi grain seeded rye but I would recommend getting something a little less thick. Was disappointed there weren't any hash browns but sandwich overall was passable. Giving it three stars mostly due to the general energy in there seemed like staff were bothered that we even showed up to put in an order and agitated I tried to order from the wrong location of the counter even though it was our first time checking the place out so had no clue. Kudos to Yelpers for highlighting this place. I would not have known, based on the name, that Saranac Deli served breakfast. I skipped The Breakfast Club downtown since I figured Saranac would probably be cheaper. It has an exceedingly informal atmosphere that I find very welcoming in a breakfast joint. You seat yourself, order at the counter, pour your own coffee and pick up your own utensils. Yes, you pour your own coffee! No need to flag down a waitress. You want more coffee? You go get it. That detail alone earns an extra star from me. I had corned beef hash and eggs, and wife had the Adirondack flapjacks with berries. Both came out very quick. I was (weirdly) disappointed that the hash was basically ALL corned beef, no potatoes. They also make a variety of breads, and you can have any of them as your toast. And the menu descriptions are in a conversational tone I found delightful. Choice quote: "Of course we can do egg whites, we have the technology." There are piles of old, but good, magazines to read, like Gourmets from 2008. Also, NO fake maple syrup can be found here. The best meal we had in Lake placid, hands down. Also the sourdough pancakes were the best pancakes I've ever had. If you want a delicious breakfast that isn't fussy- don't miss this spot. Yes the woman was rude, I agree. But tbh, who cares? I stumbled upon this place while staying at a lodge in the area. My bf stopped in to grab me a cup of coffee. Upon reading the menu he was pleasantly surprised by the choices and the fact that they bake all their sourdough breads in house. All of their food is made from scratch. They're sourdough raisin bread was a perfect pre-hike breakfast. We went back the very next day and got a Madame Croque (ham & Gruyere cheese on sourdough panini topped with egg), Frittata and flap jacks. My bf said they were the fluffiest buttermilk pancakes he ever had in his life. The decor is rustic, very fitting for the Adirondack scene. The staff and patrons are very friendly and down to earth. First off: I am giving 4 stars because the food was delicious and they allowed us to sit outside with our dog. As the reviews said, the woman behind the counter was not the friendliest. The man that was working out back and that delivered us our food was very nice!! I'm not sure if they had a lot of to go orders, but it took us over a half hour to get a breakfast sandwich and a bagel and it was not busy at all. This is a neat little local eatery that is nothing like any breakfast-y places I've ever been to. It's a kind of place where the goodness in simplicity is much appreciated. There's nothing fancy here, just a welcome, friendly service, and good food. You order at the counter and sit wherever you like, even outside if you wish. When the food is ready, the server will bring it to you. If you need more food or drink while you eat, go grab/order it. Once you're done, go back to the counter to pay. Easy, right? The menu is simple with many familiar breakfast items: eggs, omelet, pancakes... You're welcome to customize your order to your liking: add cheese, breakfast meat, or corned beef hash... You can even get an egg white omelet if you want, or customize your toast. There are certainly enough choices on bread that you're bound to find something that you like, unless you are just not in the mood for toast. We got ourselves a cheese-spinach-mushroom omelet with a side of corned beef hash and an order of pancakes plus one banana for breakfast. Usually when we get breakfast food, even when the food is excellent, it's covered in so much grease that we don't enjoy the aftermath as much. However, Saranac Sourdough's breakfast food was not at all greasy. It was well made with ingredients that tasted so fresh, it made us feel very good after (which is really how food is supposed to make you feel, especially breakfast food). My girlfriend and I have been coming here for years. My most recent trip during I stoped in twice. I can't say enough positive things about this place. The owner always remembers us because we always bring a bottle of champagne and pop the bottle for mimosas. It's such a sweet rustic place that has amazing breakfast/brunch food. I walked in and asked the lady behind the counter if they were open. The lights were dim, I did not see anyone there, and it looked as though she was counting money. She extremely rudely pointed outside and asked if I had seen the open flag, then pointed at the one man eating in the corner and asked if I had seen him. She then proceeded to laugh at me like I was an idiot. I turned around and walked out. I'd eaten here a few year prior and remembered the food being pretty good, so i figured I'd give it another shot. Now, I will never come back here again. There are plenty of other fantastic lunch options in Lake Placid that I would rather try. Awesome deli with home-made sourdough breads of staggering varieties. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and thought the value for money was excellent. Off the main drag in town, Saranac Sourdough is right next to Freestyle Cuisine. The only negative about the place is that it looked like it needed a facelift. The sign was partially rusted, the furniture inside felt like it needed a wipe-down, and some areas were very dusty. While I love antiques and old-school charm, it can't be at the expense of cleanliness. A good cleaning and a fresh coat of paint would spruce this place right up. I hope it doesn't ever change though, because it's highly unique and serves wonderful food! Try the croque Madame. read more

We stopped here for breakfast on the advice of other reviewers as well as a proprietor of an unrelated coffee shop which happened not to offer any baked goods. Sorry for them but I'm glad they directed us to this very good place! Saranac Sourdough is a bit worn in appearance (and arguably on the grungy side) but the food is reliable and the vibe is welcoming and relaxed. I had the flapjack special (3 hearty pancakes topped with in-season blueberries and peaches) while my wife and son had the sausage-egg-n-cheese breakfast sandwiches on sourdough. The food was basic but well-prepared and reasonably priced. Their coffee was ok but not great, and left me wanting a stronger cup from a certain mega-chain from Seattle. Anyhow I'd recommend Saranac Sourdough to anyone in Lake Placid looking for a warm, welcoming breakfast place. They do also have a full deli case so their lunch offerings may also be good; we may try that on a future visit. read more

For some reason there were no lights on in the restaurant and on a gray mountain more, it was sort of dank and depressing especially with the half-dead, scraggly grapevine/ potted plant over hanging the table. Had the "Mountain Woman" special and like the menu said, it was "just enough"...but come on...one little egg and half strip of bacon, two tablespoons of hash browns, and a pancake that was undercooked and doughy. The toast, however, was great. The owner? waitress? seemed inconvenienced and surly - but apparently had no problem turning on the charm for a couple of the locals she knew. Come back? This was actually the worst food I may have every had in my life. Weird pink potato pieces, bread dripping with grease and nothing tasted good. The place is also unsantitary as we watched the older man making the food eat a piece of food off of the dishes brought back from a table who left before throwing the rest away. He handled the dirty dishes, rubbed his hands on his clearly dirty apron and came up front and picked up cheese and bread without washing his hands or putting on gloves. We will never return. Absolutely exquisite breads: I almost fought with my spouse over the last piece of rosemary olive oil loaf long after leaving Lake Placid. They are renowned for soups, but unfortunately we did not get a chance to try any. Our visit was mainly geared toward a late breakfast. Their entrees are varied and delicious. The pancakes were fluffy and flavor-full; eggs perfect, bacon and sausage yummy. Their hash browns mean business. I especially liked the choice given between the Mountain Man and Mountain Woman breakfast specials. The latter has half the quantity, but the same smarts/intellect, or words to that effect. Anyway to get me to laugh before I've had morning coffee is commendable. read more

An excellent overlooked breakfast spot in lake placid. We go here every year with the family and truly love the food. Expect a very straight forward seating area with out dated decor and an order at the counter experience. Very good bread, delicious breakfast sandwiches with perfectly fried eggs, antique/vintage decor, no-nonsense attitude. Everything is made on site from scratch, and you can taste it. When you walk in, grab a few menus, you can sit wherever you want, drinks are self serve from the cooler or the coffee bar, and go up to the counter to order when you're ready. Your food will be brought out to you. Your check is added up by the woman behind the counter at the end of the meal. I loved reading the menus. There's some sass there. ;) We got a real kick out of listening to all of the customers going up to the counter and asking for "sourdough bread", to which the lady would invariably respond "it's ALL sourdough, WHICH sourdough do you want?" My favorite was the black olive, but the rosemary olive oil was also delicious. We got breakfast sandwiches and while you can modify them in many ways, make sure you say upfront what you want because they're not going to hold your hand. If you don't specify a cheese, you get American. If you don't specify a meat, you get bacon. So make your decisions and be ready to order!
