Noel and I stopped in at the Downtowner for a quick bite. I hadn't been here for awhile. I don't think that I will be going back anytime soon either Food was okay but nothing special to call home about. The owner is very loud and boisterous about his beliefs. Sort of a drama queen, and its not my kind of floor show. I like to support local businesses when I can but he's way to left, right and well let's just say to out of the park for my taste. I've stopped there many times throughout the years whenever I'm in the Ripley area. The Downtowner is currently owned by someone who grew up in the Smithers area, just like myself. The restaurant really has a down-home feel. Very comfortable and peaceful. It's kind of like a piece of Mayberry. Ample parking in front makes it convenient to get to. The food is delicious and not too pricey. Definitely worth a stop! read more

The server we had was very rude and went to the back to talk crap about me, but wasn't conscious about how big mouth she is and I heard everything she had to say so service sucks as far as the food we got a butter that was opened, and butter was gone out of it And our eggs were overcooked the ambience was filthy, dirty I most definitely would never never never recommend this place to anyone. This place is amazing! The food is top notch and tasty! It's a little place, but has room for people to sit down and get some great food! We have gone there multiple times and have never been disappointed. The guy who runs the place is a character to say the least. He is always friendly and fast! He always make a point to talk to the girls and makes sure to bring out the food hot and just right! Prices are great too! Always people in there talking and sharing with each other. I just have to say that I have been a Jackson county resident for a long time. I brought my daughter to this diner when she was born and I never stopped going. The food was good and the service was always friendly and fun. It was always friendly to everyone and just good people and food. Until the last time I went. It had been a while. But I have never...I mean never heard such moronic and bigoted conversation come from the owner of a restaurant. Yes, he let it be known that if I was offended that I should leave and that hoped he offended people...but wow. He was caustic. He made fun of a woman for asking if they had herbal tea. He told stories on at least three different Ripley businesses and told customers that local businesses were full of crooks. He told me how he hated Ripley and the people here and how he couldn't wait to retire in South Carolina. I am a West Virginian. I have lived in Ripley for years. I understand rural living and what prejudice and hatred look like. It's not uncommon. Most often it's from people who encounter something uncomfortable and that they don't understand. This was different. The owner of this business is hateful, mean, offensive. He's proud of it. I only hate that people might go to this business and make a judgement on the people of Ripley. The food was still decent. But the diner was empty and I can certainly understand why. I don't care to be called out for this review. This business now makes me embarrassed to live here. I'm embarrassed that I will refuse to take my daughter back here. The face of this business is racism, hatred, arguments, and a brooding sense of self righteousness. When the Place sells and someone who is kind reopens it...I will return. Until then I will dissuade everyone I possibly can from entering the doors of The Downtowner in sincere hopes that they may not form negative opinions about the people of Jackson county. I was driving back to Ohio from Naples Florida where I had eaten nothing but horribly expensive meals for three weeks. We didn't want a fancy lunch but didn't want fast food either and stumbled across this place on yelp. It's about 2 miles from I-77 and situated in a little town that looks like Mayberry. The restaurant is very simple and the people who dine and work there are just good old fashioned hard working folks. If you're pretentious at all, you'll hate it. If you like good food and delightful people, you'll love it. I found the roast beef and mashed potatoes and gravy to be so good I took home 5 take out orders! The owners of this restaurant had never heard of yelp. Tell them you read this and maybe post something yourself if you go. I look forward to seeing them on my drive next year! read more

Okay. This was a nice place and the breakfast options that the family ordered went down well. I ordered Al's Burger. Which was advertised as delicious and different. It was definitely different. Tasted ok but there was no 'burger' in it!!! The other thing is the price of the breakfast/lunch. $40 plus for four of us. Seems steep. read more

Drove an hour to Ripley, found this little diner read the reviews they were all good. My husband and I shared a hamburger steak dinner, which was a burnt hamburger patty, no seasoning, maybe a spoon full of mashed potatoes, gravy, and green beans. My staff and I met with Ripley residents at the Downtowner Restaurant this week for my statewide listening tour. Not only was the staff tremendously kind and accomodating, but the egg sandwich was outstanding. My staff member, Chris, got the cheeseburger and he was also very satisfued.
