We live right around the corner and absolutely love the experience you get at this strip mall - feeling like you are in a totally different part of the world. We walked in after church and found that we were the only gringos in town. We were met with smiles and a delicious smell! Ordering was easy, as the waitress had no trouble understanding my Spanglish. Husband and son both ordered pupusas and my son thought they were the best he's ever had. (And we've had a few papusas...) I ordered the beans, plantains, and sour cream dish. One of my favs! Didn't disappoint. We also ordered a plate of yuca. It was super yummy. I've never had it in a Salvadorian place (just Peruvian) and it was very creamy inside and crunchy on the outside, served with . Service was efficient, not a long wait for food, restaurant is very clean, though not much charm. All the staff members were friendly. Definitely recommend it if you haven't tried Salvadorian food, although you may want to look up what you want ahead of time so you are ready for a Salvadorian menu. 5/22/22 Dona Cecy's Pupuseria is a restaurant that caught my wife's attention after visiting the flea market. This store is heavily populated by the Hispanic community. How many dialects of the Spanish language were there I cannot say, but what I can tell you is this, the place was booming with customers. My guess is a lot of families who had finished church and stopped by for a bite to eat. I seemed to be the only gringo in the mix of the Latino population. This did not bother me one bite, dispite some of the looks I got from some people. Then again, maybe they were looking at my wife who was with me and wondering what the hell? Whether this truly the case it matters not. We were here for some food. Dona Cecy's Pupuseria is what we came for and The Pupusas with Cheese was calling my name. My wife ordered The Pupusas with Cheese and Loroco. If you don't know what a Loroco is, it is an edible flower popular in El Salvador, Guatemala and other places. We also ordered drinks orginally large, but learned the store did not have large lids for the drinks. (I hope this isn't a normal thing) We then changed the order to medium drinks and my wife ordered a medium Horchata ("Horchata, or orxata, is a name given to various kinds of plant-based beverages. In Spain it is made with soaked, ground, and sweetened tiger nuts. I've eaten here a two times and done take out about a dozen. Having tried pupusas all over Los Angeles and NoVA, I gotta say theirs is one of the best in the area. There's always a long wait for food cause everything is made fresh, but even when we call ahead for pickup, it doesn't help and we typically still end up waiting another 20-30 minutes past when they told us to pick up. Service really sucks no matter if you're in the restaurant or if you order on the phone. Its definitely not a language barrier, (my mister speaks enough Spanish to get by and I can understand some) there's definitely an attitude from the staff and it feels like they know everyone who comes for the food is going to come back. When I've dined there, it takes forever to get food, takes forever to get anyone's attention, and takes forever to pay and leave. My wife and I came here and we have decided this place has the best pupusas in the Northern Virginia area. You don't come here for the service, the customer service could be a little more friendly and could definitely improve. But if you want some chunky, fresh and delicious pupusas, this is the place for you. The revueltas pupusas also come with frijoles on the inside, not just chicharrón y queso. It has been over a year since we last had pupusas here but this will be the last. Our waitress was pleasant but I took an hour to get our food. We ordered 2 chicken tamales, two pork and cheese pupusas and 2 shrimp pupusas. The tamales arrived first. They had too much masa. Mine had a checked bone in it and my husband's had an olive pit! When the pupusas finally arrived all four where stacked on a plate and stuck together. They were partially burned and in my opinion inedible. Ah, pupusas. I only came here for pupusas. Dona Azucena does it right in many ways. I had 2 of the CHEESE PUPUSAS. The tortilla was soft with a slight crunch, and the curtido (cabbage relish), was fantastic. You get the mix of textures and the great flavors. But I have an issue. The cheese. I like cheese as much as the next person, but my 2 pupusas probably had 50% more cheese than was necessary. If they cut out a bit, I'd like them more. I also had a side of YUCCA which was crisp outside and tender inside. For drinks, I had a Fanta (hello!) and shared a HORCHATA, which I've always heard about but never tried. Yum. If you have the chance, try it. It's made of lots of seeds, rice, barley, etc. The first thing that I could recognize was definitely a ricey taste, in the best way. To top it all off, this whole feast cost us just over $30 for 4 of us, which included drinks, 2 tamales (which I didn't eat), and an order of chicharonnes (which I also didn't eat). Like I said, I came here for pupusas. Take the chance and try one if you've never had one. It'll only set you back less than $2, after all. My objective was to have a Salvadorian experience, satisfied stomach and not to spend much money. I accomplished all three in Dona Bessy's pupuseria. I went in, picked up the menu and showed with my fingers what I wanted. I got a smile from a server. I walked to the bar and with my two fingers showed the server that I want to sample the juices and I got it. I got a frees sample of 3 drinks and I've chosen one that may be the sweetest of all sweet juices. I listen Salvadorian music on the speakers and looked at the Salvadorian flag on the wall. Marinated steak (carne asada) was huge and moist. Pupusa with pork and cheese tasted like really rich tuna melt sandwich but I loved it just that way. The place is super clean and I was honored to eat my meal in the same space where Salvadorian jolly construction crew eat their meal (quickly) with their fingers. Those hard working man (that built America) enjoyed their meal too. Yes, the server does not speak English, but for me that is the original and valued thing and we humans figured it out with the smile anyhow. Since we've had considerable pupusas from Doña Azucena's other location - and they were always good, we were happy to see her open up a storefront here in Springfield. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, the pupusas are nothing like the others, the quality of the place overall (although clean and neat) lacks the service punch, quality service and tasty goodness of the foods in general. I continue to give la Doña a 5 star rating elsewhere - but she needs a vast improvement at this location for me to return. For now, it's not worth the trip. read more

I understand that the pupusas are freshly prepared - however it takes FOREVER for anyone to take your order, bring your food out when it's ready, or even to bring the check!!
