My computer is just as screwed up as it was before Mr. Chip got his hands on it and supposedly 'fixed' it for over $200. When I first brought my 2025 MacBook Air to him my concern was that the cursor would freeze for 15 - 30 seconds quite often, and the round balloon kept appearing and would not let me do anything on the computer also for 15 - 30 seconds throughout the day. Also, it just seemed slow when I tried to open a pages document. Maddening. I told him I know nothing about computers and that I wanted it to work the way it always had since I bought it. He told me he would have to reinstall the operating system. What do I know? I said sure. Even now while typing, the computer stops typing every so often and I have to wait about 15 - 30 seconds for my computer to catch up and print my words. Continuing with my sad tale of woe. I came back the next day and paid him $170. Unfortunately when I got home the computer was not the same. To start with my desktop did not have any of the documents I had saved to it and there were other problems. So I called him and I asked him why he returned my computer to me when it was not the same computer I brought into him. He said I could put everything back on the desktop and he started to rattle off what I needed to do. Ridiculous! I stopped him and reminded him that I said I was tech challenged and did not feel competent to do that. His response was for another $70. he would put my desktop back the way it was. Outrageous that he would half fix my computer, return it to me not the way I gave it to him and then he wanted to charge me more. So I foolishly paid him and the next day my desktop was what it used to be. However, there remained other problems such as my Passkey not working but decided, rather than call him, to call Apple support and they were able to resolve these several issues. Here it is 2 -3 weeks later and I am again having the same problems with the ball and the cursor freezing throughout the day. Also, my computer is being very slow to open my Pages documents. The very same problems he supposedly fixed when he reinstalled my operating system. For sure I will not let Mr. Chip touch my machine again but I will take it to a repair shop that I have used before. The only reason I didn't use them this time is they were backed up and said they couldn't get to my computer for at least 2 days. I should have shown patience and waited. My bad! read more

After changing the battery, he checked all the settings and tried to optimize them as much as possible. Finally, he even demonstrated how to clean the computer, explaining clearly what kind of cloth to use, what kind of detergent to use, and how much water to add. Here is a company that takes no responsibility on their work and manages to tell their clients they screw up for doing an update. I had this company do some work for me on my Mac mini. They replace the hard drive and added some more memory. Peter install a Samsung SSD 850 Evo. Just recently i did and upgrade from Sierra to Catalina and the computer work fine for a few days and then i restarted the Mac mini and would start and halfway it would shut down. i called peter and then he started to blame on the new OS Catalina, he mention i should bring it by so they can fix it. I called Apple and we started to do some work with a senior technician. We tried several things to try to erase the disk so we can downgrade and reinstalled and non of them worked. I just finished hanging the phone with peter at Dr Chip and i ask them they should fix these free of charge and basically accused me of screwing my own computer for trying to erase the disk while i was doing this with the people from Apple. I am aghast at the accusation from the employee from Dr Chip, telling a client that he screwed up!! Plainly and simple i will not returned to this business ever and i would not recommend this to anyone in the future. Don't waste your time P.S. companies provide a service and they should be knowledgeable of their product and they should own their mistakes instead of blaming. This could be an easy fix in their part, take responsibility and repair it. know i find myself having to hire another company with more experience and better customer service and paid to get this fix. I took my broken computer to Dr. Chip to see if the wires could be solder from the battery to the mother board. Muhammed looked at it carefully and told me it would require some intricate work, something he does not do and it would probably cost between $100.00-$150.00 and there would be no guarantee it would work. The computer was only worth about $300.00 and I already bought a new one to replace the old one which still worked as long as it was plugged in. I really appreciated his honesty and professionalism. Pete diagnosed the problem with my computer in less than 5 minutes (one of my RAM cards was bad) Told me the price of the installation and cost of the replacement RAM, and I was out the door in less than 20 minutes total I cannot say the exact price because every repair is different, but what I payed was half the cost of just a diagnosis at other places in Pacific Beach. Better luck spending your money on a refurbished laptop from groupon or Walmart. I had an issue with the hinges on the screen (purchased Dec 2020) I called within the return window. I explained the issue. Muhammed told me to come back at the beginning of January 2021' when he would have more laptops. I had a covid scare and had to quarantine, let him know he said to come back after February 5th 2021' since his assistant was on vacation. So I come and and he dicks me around about not being able to replace it. I DIDNT EVEN WANT MY MONEY BACK JUST A REPLACEMENT. NADA... WOULDNT WORK WITH ME. I'm beyond disappointed. Been going to them for years. Recommended them to friends. Never again. Save yourself the headache and go somewhere else. All nice to you all smiles till they have to fix something. read more

Not even worth sharing what happened to me. Spent a lot of money on multiple laptops that didn't work. Mohamed kept up-selling me to more expensive laptops til one worked well enough to send me on my way. A couple months later it crapped out on me. Don't waste your money here. I gave him fair warning that I would write a review if he didn't make it right, but he decided not to. It started with a keyboard issue that needed fixing. He gave me a quote of $140. When I came to pick it up he said it couldn't be fixed, but he had a better computor that was only $250. When I got it home some of the keys on that keyboard didn't work. I returned the next day and he offered me an upgrade to a $350 laptop. That one worked fine for a few months when the battery stopped charging. It turned out to be the mother board was malfunctioning. Like I mentioned earlier, don't waste your money here. You'll have better luck on ebay. read more

Mohamed at Dr. Chip is the Real genius when it comes to servicing my MacBook Pro. The infamous "gray screen" video glitch with the 2011 models was an issue he was very familiar with and knew how to repair it. The Apple Store in Carlsbad said I needed to replace the logic board and with labor would cost me $565!! Mohamed fixed the video chip for $149 and came with a 30day warranty. I dropped it off on Wednesday and it was ready on Friday just in time for me to DJ my weekend gigs. Since this was my back up MBP, he suggested for me to clone my primary IOS so that it will mirror my same playlists and music files. He is honest and doesn't charge or up sell services I don't need. An absolutely terrible experience and it takes a lot for me to write a review. I contacted Dr Chip Computer Solutions by phone after having some hard drive issues and decided to have them take a look. After charging me an initial $49.00 diagnostic that was able to reveal nothing, Mohamed (guy who I dealt with) said they'd almost certainly be able to make the repair in a few hours. A few hours later, I received a call by Mohamed who informed me that my computer had a firewall that was preventing them from replacing the hardrive. However, that for an additional $75.00 they could take off the encryption. Although I was starting to doubt the process at this point, I agreed to pay the additional $75.00 ONLY if they resolved the problem. The next day I received a call from Mohamed that they had found a solution. Unfortunately the solution they had found was that they could do nothing about the encryption and that the only way I could get my computer to function was with an external hard drive attached by USB at all times. (They couldn't install the hard drive inside the computer and couldn't access any of the data). Since Mohamed had supposedly found a solution to my problem in his eyes, I was still responsible for the $130.00 payment if I decided not to proceed with the job or not. This justification for this $130.00 payment was that Mohamed had spent time to find out that the encryption could not be removed. So instead of the normal $49.00 diagnostic fee, I'd have to pay almost two times this. (For him basically telling me that he couldn't fix my computer properly). In the end, I paid close to $300.00 for a reboot of my IOS system and a $49.00 external hard drive. He even tried to tack on an addition $27.00 for a external hard drive 'box' Not my favorite Mac experience to say the least :/ read more

Took my 2000$ (mind you, it's an older model) MacBook Pro laptop in for new battery. They replaced it for 100$. Took it home, followed charging instructions... few days later the mother board is completely fried. Bring it back in, they take out the battery, return my money and now I have a brick laptop that needs a new motherboard. Apple said they probably replaced it with an aftermarket battery which caused the reaction, or they did a poor job of replacing it. Owner says has nothing to do with the battery replacement, without even considering how obvious it was. Wasn't in the mood to argue, which he obviously was with no regard to facts. I wouldn't recommend anyone ever go through this place for even the smallest detail. No policy or customer service standard. I wish I'd replaced the battery myself. Rave reviews for Dr Chip in PB. The delightful owner Mohammad and his brilliant young assistant Peter are wizards with Macs. They booted my MacBook Pro from an external disk and diagnosed it WHILE I WAITED!! No charge for the diagnosis! The internal drive had failed. They replaced it with an SSD drive (an upgrade several tech savvy friends suggested), gave me a clean install of a newer operating system, scanned for viruses on my time machine backup, found 4 and killed them, and then optimized my restored data. All for under $300! And the laptop was done the next business day!! They are honest, knowledgeable, fast, and efficient. My computer is now better than new... money well spent! Cry Wolf said it would take 2 weeks to get the computer on the bench to diagnose without a rush charge. I will return - their service is exceptional! read more

I would not buy from Solex again. Mohamed takes the cheapest path and sold me a lemon. I initially went to him and explained I bought an iPhone and am migrating myself to Macs, always been on a PC. Total Mac newbie and need guidance. He sold me a rebuilt iBook with Tiger OS. I soon learned that iPhones need Leopard to interface with iTunes 10+ and iPhone software upgrades; as a Mac guy he should know that. I took the notebook back, he did upgrade to Leopard but then told me the processor isn't fast enough for Leopard but it should be fine. It wasn't. Any streaming video or multiple apps running was so slow the video was totally pixelated and audio not synched with video. There was no running any YouTube or streaming video at all. Of course he had an excuse and told me to just run it at lower pixels. Who wants to watch fuzzy video? Two weeks later the monitor went out. He did replace the monitor with a used, dirty one. Soon after that, the keyboard started to go out. He did replace it (trip number three now) BUT he replaced it with an old used keyboard with letters rubbed off and illegible. Then a few weeks later the notebook just started to freeze up randomly. I took it back for the fourth time over 12 weeks and told him the computer was a lemon, no fault of his, but a lemon and I want my money back. He turned on the notebook, looked at it for literally 90 seconds and said "it isn't freezing up". I offered to let him keep it for a few days to see what it was doing. He refused and made it sound like he had already gone above and beyond his guarantee. So I asked politely then sternly for my money back and even again I took the high road and said give me $325 of my $450 back, that more than covers my use of the computer. He refused. He said take $200 or take the computer home. I took the $200. Never, ever would I buy from this guy. Caveat Emptor! read more

I found this place on Craigslist. I was looking for an Apple battery for my older macbook. The owner said he had them. I asked if it was an Apple battery and he said yes. I wasn't convinced so I tried to confirm "Is this an OEM battery", he said "Yes". He then went on to give me a condescending lesson that made me feel kind of stupid. I got of the phone feeling confident it was an Apple branded OEM battery and drove down there the next day. He pulls out a Chinese replacement off-brand. When I asked him if he understood what OEM meant and what I was trying to ask him on the phone, he literally argued with me about it. I have had numerous vehicles in my life including an old Mustang my Father passed to me. If I want the part that the manufacturer chose as the best part for this car, I ask for the Ford OEM. Everyone understands what I mean. Apparently not this guy. While Apple might make their parts in a Chinese factory, they oversee the production and quality control and therefore I think Apple OEM (and most people I know) feel it's a superior part. For the wasted trip, a guy who might just have been doing this far too long, and a customer isn't right in any way experience, I give it 1 star. Don't expect to get an original APPLE branded OEM over-seen/manufactured by Apple (WHATEVER) part here even though it appears he's using Apple's images as examples on his internet advertising. read more

I'm a fix-it-myself kind of guy, but one repair that scares me enough to use a professional is my computer. I love my iBooks, I don't want to mess them up, and I know enough to know I don't know enough to wrench on them myself. I originally found Mohammed from Solex Micro on Craig's List, and I have heard ads for Solex Micro on 1170AM, on a Saturday night gearhead show called the Garage Hour. Mohammed is a long-time Apple guy who is adept with Mac hardware and software, and he has a pretty big selection of all the bits and parts that can keep a Mac up and running. Yes, it appears he runs his business out of his house, but San Diego ain't a cheap place to operate, so who can blame him? I've bought batteries for my iBooks (used - he has lots of good used parts which suit my used Macs just fine), and Mohammed has replaced parts for me like the laptop screen, quickly and inexpensively. He's also done some software work for me. Shop around - I always do - and you'll find Solex is accessible, inexpensive (as inexpensive as Mac stuff can be, which is never too cheap), and Mohammed knows his stuff. I went to Mohammed for years before finding out he was ripping me off. I had brought him two computers over the years, then I come to find out that he replaced my original hard drives with a copy, which made my computer break down over time, for which he charged me to diagnose, and repeatedly repair. Now it is barely useable, and he still cannot tell me whats wrong with it (being that he caused it to mess up) and then sold me every bandaid he could think of to milk me dry of funds. Be warned, products from this place might lure you in because of the competitively low prices as opposed to other places. But the quality of the materials that are sold at this business are extremely low-grade and sub-standard to the actual products that you should be using for your valuable tech items. Whatever you do, do not come here and waste your hard earned money on products that will not last you long. I have been to Dr. Chips a few times, most of the visits have been positive but I just had probably the worst experience that I have ever had with a business. I purchased a Mac Charger 85W nearly a year ago, and that charger lasted me a long time until I had an accident on my part with it. So I purchased a new one with Dr. Chip in November, and in January the metal magnet piece fell off completely. I brought a few friends here and told them to get products because we all have macs. And then I started hearing that the chargers were defective. A handful of my friends told me that the metal magnet came off completely and would start sparking. So I took in my charger as it still had my 90 day warranty and they exchanged it as I came with a friend who had previously been in there a few days prior due to the same problem. So the 2nd replacement I got in mid February just a little over a month and a half ago, and the metal magnet fell off again. So I went into Dr. Chip right now and Mohamed was there. I told him what had happened and right off the bat you could tell he didn't want to do an exchange. He told me it was a simple fix with some glue. WHY in the world would I stick a charger with glue into my $2000+ computer?! I told him that I would like an exchange because the charger he sold me was defective. He then looks at the rest of it and tells me he can't exchange it because I have ruined the chord and it is bent at the base. Seriously? The chord is manufactured to be rolled around the charger hooks. He then tells me that the only thing he can do is sell me a new one at the base price of $20 dollars that he pays for the chargers. So you mean to tell me that the product you sold me was defective and you're blaming on something else? But still wanna charge me for a new one? Seriously the worst experience I've ever had with an item from any business. Not to mention I am transgender and in the process of changing my name with my banks and he rudely tells me that my debit card is not mine, to which I say yes it is. Perhaps next time ask for someones identification before beginning a transaction. I ended up paying for the new charger after he attempted to put crazy glue into the defective charger he previously sold me. The only reason I purchased it was because its midterms week and don't have the time to be going to other places. Worst experience and customer service. read more

But he was very professional and helpful! I needed a charger for my macbook and I got it for around $50. He was very informational and gave tips as to how you can take care of your things better.
