I got my upper blepharo done with him almost 7 years ago and I'm coming back because I am STILL so upset about it. As soon as the procedure was done I was immediately alarmed that my eyes were significantly different shapes and sizes. He said it was due to swelling and to wait. Well, it was not due to swelling and he royally messed up the ratios. He then tried to fix it 2 more times, which is a lot of time, energy and money on my part to do it. And it still did not fix the issue. One side permanently looks swollen which I think is called sausage eye, and he threatens to sue me if I said anything ill of his practice. He also convinced me to get ptosis and surgical cuts when I was young and sewing would have been a fine and easy option. Now I can not undo his work and I am stuck like this. Wanted to share an update after my original post. The office contacted me because Dr. Kim wanted to address my concerns in person. I did go in thinking that Dr. Kim would still be dismissive and probably only reaching out to preserve his reputation and pride. I was already committed to a girl's trip to Korea over the summer so I wasn't looking for a resolution but did want to hear him out and maybe an acknowledgment of his mistake. Possibly wishful thinking but I was very pleasantly surprised at how much he did care and how the satisfaction of his patients was very important to him. This was important for me to hear it and feel it. We were able to effectively communicate the miscommunication of my initial follow up post surgery. It was 1.5 hours of talking through where the communication got lost. He suggested a revision surgery and patiently walked through the whole process with me. I walked away still on the fence and extremely nervous. Korea is known for their plastic surgery technology and sophisticated methods so it's really hard to compare but Korea does come with traveling costs as well as being away from the family. I called Dr. Kim's office to ask for a quote before deciding and was very surprised to hear that Dr. Kim was going to perform this revision free of charge!!!!!! I assumed a discount but not FREE!!! WOW! I appreciate that Dr. Kim is willing to correct this as well as keeping his patients happy! He could have just looked the other way with a canned response and say," well, no surgery is ever 100% and all surgery comes with risks" but he didn't (I expected him to tbh). I decided to search for a Korean eyelid surgeon because my upper lids were hanging over my lashes (more so on my right eye than my left) and it was affecting my vision. My eyes would get lashes stuck in them often, they would get tired halfway through the day, and get oily from the natural oils on my eyelid skin. Dr Kim assessed me and told me I had Ptosis (weak muscles in my eyelid) which I did not know. I knew that fixing the way my lids overlapped my eyelashes meant getting the "double eyelids" which was a huge deal for me because I never wanted to change my eye shape. I love my Asian eyes. I went ahead and scheduled the procedure for upper blepharoplasty, Ptosis correction, and epicanthoplasty. While I cannot say the surgery procedure was a pleasant experience (it's my first ever surgery and I was awake for the entire procedure), it was painless. I went to him because he is a Korean doctor so he is keen to an Asian face and the reputation of Korean doctors in Korea doing amazing jobs. I was so wrong! He charged me 50 K to do three procedures, face lift, blepharoplasty(eye lid) and canthoplasty (opening of lateral eyes). On the day of surgery at 10 min before, we begin, he states that he can't do all three at the same time (why didn't you tell me at the consultation) and since he has to do it in a different days to do cantoplasty he requested another 5K which I wasn't happy but paid, since I'm already ready to have the face lift. First of all I'm a registered esthetic nurse and I'm familiar with plastic surgery procedures and I give Botox and fillers for over 40 years so I understand facial structures and improvement of youthful features of faces and how to inject local anesthetic on the face. This procedure took 8 hour (no wonder they forced me to wear diaper so you are not allowed to go bathroom) and the way they inject the tumescent local injectable solution was beyond the describable pain. I had done many plastic surgeries in the past without general anesthetic and I'm very good at receiving pain but he is so rough, too fast, the solution was splashing all over the face, I thought as I was laying on the treatment table, "this shouldn't be allowed as any normal medical procedures " This is beyond normal discomfort that patient should endure" This indicates he is cutting corners not to hire an proper anesthesiologist. After 11month post op, my face looks worse than before. I waited this long to write the review to give enough time for healing to be fair. After paying 55K I look even older, scary, manly, with square face, and droopy eye lids. He did a good job taking fat out of my jaw line but he left my fatty tissue toward back side so my face looked worse with square, very masculine and my neck looking wider. And he took too much fat out of my upper cheeks (under my check bone) so I have hollow cheeks. And my upper lids are still droopy toward the outer corners because he took skin only proximal area not diagonally toward corners to create wider openings toward outer lateral side. So my eye lids ended up more fat and droopy than even before. I didn't want to continue with him but went back for post op appointment to complain how not happy I am and hoping canthoplasty could fix my eye lids but instead he suggested to do upper fore head lift and asked 5K more!!!!!!!!!! Why didn't he suggested this in the fire place. I was shocked to hear he suggesting totally another procedure to correct his first work. This is my conclusion about his ability as a plastic surgeon. I'm in the business of esthetic medicine and I had worked and dealt with many plastic surgeons and had received many procedures myself in Los Angeles. He focuses only partial area of the faces and doesn't understand the face as the whole project. He doesn't understand the old patient face lift approaches are lot different from young faces. Now one year later I had to redo my face all over with another plastic surgeon and I had to use Radiesee fillers to correct my contour of cheek areas. I do NOT recommend him at all. Only one thing good is the front desk girls are polite, soft spoken, accommodating and complete bilingual but the surgical nurse is rude, rough and doesn't speak good English. Please stay away from this doctor and the surgical nurse. PS. He is out of his mind to show me other patients who are one week post op, whose faces looked very normal. So I thought I can take a vacation trip after 10 days and I bought a plain tickets to go Europe in 10 days. And he knew I was doing this. Oh my face looked like a monster for three month and I was no shape to be getting on a plane for first two weeks. Even the office girls gave me the doctor 's note stating "this person had a face procedure so may not look like the passport picture" . So nice to be back here. I always feel like I'm taken care of here. I had my eye surgery done here and I had amazing results. As I age I'm definitely focusing on more maintenance an upkeep. Superb service and results. I've been coming here for many years for lip injections and have had perfect natural results. Great results and my results last for a long time. It really depends on the person but I come here about twice a year for touch ups. Booking an appointment is easy and they will update if they have earlier slots that become available. My experience getting eyelid surgery was great! Thankful my first experience turned out great with no fuss. He did numbing shots around the eye which were a bit painful but he did warn me about the pain and we took it slow. After an hour, Dr. Kim sat me up to check my shape before he was finishing the surgery. He was very focused and made sure to view me at different angles. Once he was satisfied, he stitched me up. I was so happy not to have so much swelling afterwards. In a week I returned to the office to get my stiches removed. My lids started healing nicely. My lid height at first seemed a little higher but I figured it was due to some swelling. My crease height did get smaller as the swelling went away. Dr. Kim's surgical skills are truly exceptional. I had a blepharoplasty (upper eyelid surgery) and a rhinoplasty using rib and ear cartilage at the same time. Getting surgery for the first time can be quite scary. So many thoughts of what could go wrong pace through your head that day. Anyone going through this the first time would be uneasy, but I knew that I could trust Dr. Kim. He was patient and he talked me through each step of the eyelid procedure. What was reassuring was that during the surgery he'll let you see the progress of your eyelid shape. Sounds freaky but i would rather see what I was getting before the final result. The doctor himself told me that he paid people to post 5-star reviews, which I kept to myself out of respect, but that respect has imploded completely since then. Dr. Kim is a liar, plain and simple. He ruined my eyelids and now it'd cost me around $10k to have them fixed in South Korea. He assured me each time that he'd be able to fix them, and my eyelids are now almost irreparable. I can't go in public without covering my eyes. STORY: I would be ecstatic if I could have the eyes that I had after my second revision, even though it ended with my double eyelid fading away. At least that would still be operable by someone else. Had five - FIVE - revisions with Dr. Kim, who flippantly assured me each time that he would make it right. For free. And I actually believed him. He sounded so calm and self-assured with his board cert. and I'd already spent $4900 on this operation. The second to last time, he chatted with his nurses while working and ended up flipping my eyelid outwards. Said nothing, walked away. Had my stitches out two weeks later and the eyelid was still flipped outwards, and he still said nothing. Finally agreed that something was wrong when I pointed it out to him (he was annoyed that I posted my concerns up on RealSelf, because I was starting to have real misgivings when I read that the doctor was supposed to correct an upturned lid in 2 weeks and he, the doctor, was saying nothing about something that clearly looked wrong to my MOM,) and then operated on my eye again the week after, resulting in what you see in the picture. Contacted numerous (numerous, I tell you) top doctors in Korea and NONE of them said they'd be able to let me close my eye all the way again (the closest I got was effing 50%.) I'll probably be suffering from Lagophthalmos and dry eyes for the rest of my life unless they figure out a way to fix it in the future. But for now, I'm screwed. I returned to Kim, who again said he'd be able to fix my eyes without any problems. I no longer trust this doctor. Don't get your eyes done in the U.S. and don't fall for the talk. If the doctor screws up the first time, take it as a warning sign and look elsewhere. Take out a private loan if you must and don't settle for a free revision from the same doctor. I'm so glad that I found Dr. Kim after searching for a Korean plastic surgeon. He does fantastic work. I look like myself but look 15 years younger. The sagging jowls, sagging neck and neck bands are gone, as are the hooded eyes I had. I was adamant about keeping my almond-shaped eyes (I didn't want the fake rounded-eye look that I see so often after Asian women get eye jobs) and the result of my sub-brow lift is perfect--my eyes still have the double-eyelid fold but without the heavy lids. I was quite apprehensive about staying awake with only local anesthetic for the two procedures (sub-brow lift and face lift) but with a little valium I relaxed and felt no pain. I took Tylenol the first night but never felt any pain during recovery. I'm relieved that I had awake surgery since one can have permanent short-term memory loss after about two hours of general anesthesia. Not being put under was a big PLUS to me. My swelling went down substantially in the first week as I was religious about icing the eye and brow area and keeping my head elevated with a slant pillow. After a week, I really felt I could go anywhere without feeling self-conscious. It's been a month now and no one can tell I had any work done except for they think I look younger, cuter and more energetic. People who don't know me think I'm in my forties or fifties but I'm really 67. All the persons on Dr. Kim's staff are friendly, professional and helpful. Dr. Kim spent a lot of time with me in my consultation explaining his unique approach to plastic surgery and addressing my concerns. It's little wonder that prestigious universities from Johns Hopkins to Seoul National University want Dr. Kim to teach his technique at their institutions. He really is the best! read more
