As far as I know, Dr. Van Tosh is no longer there. I saw Dr. Barrows last week. She was phenomenal, as was the staff. It is now owned by Bay State which has approximately five locations and was started by Dr. Timothy Lynch years ago. I had zero wait time, and was in and out of there very quickly. The office was modern and comfortable and I was able to get my glasses ordered prior to leaving would definitely recommend Dr. Barrows! She is a great eye doctor! read more

Dr. Vantosh is great at what she is doing but the admin work there is unprofessional (as far as proper billing and explanation of services). Once I made an eye exam and didn't specify nor was I asked if I wanted to do the additional exam for contacts. It was done and I wasn't aware of this being an additional cost, however, I didn't need the extra assessment; it was simply implied I wanted it. I paid for that and let it go. Then this past year, again, another terrible experience. I asked if they would price match the online pricing from another company, and I was told yes. I was never informed that they were price matching me after my insurance allowance (which would've made my decision different). I asked for it to be SELF PAY, I paid in full, then this year I called again and she said you're not eligible through your insurance yet. I was going to submit a claim for reimbursement of my eligible part for last year, but because they were sneaky and unprofessional about it I won't get my reimbursement. I am all about supporting local businesses but when one does things without your explicit consent, it is very unpleasant. Melinda also gave a response over the phone "Well, if you didn't use it you were going to lose it ANYWAY" -Melinda. First of all, you don't talk to a customer that way, neither should you be making a decision on their behalf. I work in healthcare and know very well how it works, I don't need someone processing claims when I explicitly explained the condition on me making a purchase through them and not online. I had made an appointment here for an eye exam. I had been clear about what I needed and the reason for why I needed an eye exam. My original doctors office was booked until July and I needed an updated prescription so I could purchase glasses online. So I made an appointment here and showed up 10 minutes before my appointment and waited 30 full minutes outside the office for my appointment. After approaching, I had suggested if I should take my contacts out for the exam and they preceded to tell me no with no explanation. After talking with Dr. Van Tosh, before any exams, I mentioned that I only need a prescription so I can order glasses the only time I mentioned contacts was when I offered to take them out for the exam. She had not informed me that we were doing more than what I had signed up for. They had tricked me into doing a full contact lenses exam and photo and report that I had not asked for. After the testing was over I was extremely disappointed and they offered to take off the charges after I voiced my concerns, but I had accepted the test and the charges and did not want to cause anymore problems. Not to mention the receptionist does an awful job and will try to force you to buy their glasses and if you are not interested she will integrate you to find out where you're getting them cheaper and their prices are unbeatable. As I thought it couldn't get any worse I had got a call telling me they messed up my insurance after I provided all the right details with my card and everything, I got a bill in the mail chafing me for an eye exam and all the extra charges I DID NOT sign up for. Outstanding! The Dr. Is knowledgeable, professional and nice! I'd describe the office as a "homey" feel, not like the big box stores..You matter to them. The office staff is very accommodating, ie insurance..they are just as interested in having you get all the insurance benefits you should be getting as you are! They have a very nice selection of eyeglass frames, and can "get" pretty much anything else that's not right there, like different color etc. BUT!!! The absolute best thing is..they have an "optomap" instrument/machine that takes a picture of the back of your eyes. Not only is it neat to see all that it can detect, it TOTALLY negates the need for those dilation drops!! That! Is worth it's weight in gold if you ask me! Highly recommended! Honesty, I can't say enough. Except, they take VSP, and Eyemed for sure. And sunglasses! They have nice sunglasses too read more

Dr. Van Tosh is a wonderful person and very understanding of my abhorrence for the glaucoma test (puff of air on eyeball)! She's wonderful with my young kids as well, as an optometrist, and also was super patient and tolerant of them rolling around while she examined MY eyes. Her staff is fine. And she is generous . . . she gave me like 20 days of daily disposable contacts for me to try! I doubt my Boston/Back Bay optometrist would ever give me that many samples! read more

I can't agree with the other reviewer. The office staff is very helpful and will go to great lengths to help people. I have never had an issue working with the people at Van Tosh's office. The only reason I do not give the office more stars is that it is small and does not have the variety of frames that larger offices have. That said, I have brought in damaged frames and had them repaired the same day, they give sample contacts to help out a customer who runs out. It is truly a community office. read more

The Dr. Did an amazing job with my young son. The secretarial staff on the other hand was abhorrent. Appointments we're cancelled without any notification to us. A complete and utter lack of knowledge about how to Bill to our insurance company left me spending hours on the phone with both the Dr.s office and the insurance company. The amount of time I had to put in because of their constant mistakes left me absolutely frustrated beyond belief. I would travel hours to see another Dr. Just to avoid the headaches we dealt with at this mismanaged office. read more

I could not disagree more vehemently with the previous reviewer. My family has seen Dr. Van Tosh for over a decade. She embodies what medical care USED to be about: caring, human, compassionate, willing to deal with an emergency at any hour. The absolute antithesis of the cookie cutter, big box stores that are taking over the industry. If you want to be treated like a patient, instead of a number; if you want to be examined by a professional instead of a 20-something technician; if you care more about service and compassion than glitz and marketing; Dr. Van Tosh is as good as it gets. read more

Although Dr. Van Tosh is a kind woman and wonderful at what she does, I will be finding another Optometrist. My family and I have been going to Dr. Van Tosh for years and each time the experience gets worse and worse. The women (I believe they're receptionists or secretaries) that work in this establishment are HORRIBLE. They are not only rude to the clients, but they sit at the desk in the waiting room speaking poorly of other coworkers. How unprofessional. Also, the way that they speak to the patients is unbearable. I will be taking my business elsewhere. I would much rather drive farther to another Optometrist than deal with those poorly mannered women. Although Dr. Van Tosh is very professional, I feel as though she is guilty by association. My family and I will be taking our business to somewhere that makes us feel more welcomed. read more

Not the place you want to go for bed side manner or customer service. On a Thursday night my 3 year old knocked my contact lens out of my eye in a dark parking lot after 45 minutes of searching, it was hopeless. I called Dr. Van Tosh and explained my circumstance ( I am virtually blind without, she would not order me a new one or a new pair until I had an eye exam ($120.00 office visit), that she could not provide because she was going on vacation. Saturday and she does not work on Fridays The manufacturer is less than 5 miles from her office, I was desperate and they could care less. I also purchased a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses from them ($210.00) at her recommendation the lens fell out from day one they tried to repair them never worked I glued the lens that helped for about a week at a time they refused to replace them on warranty and the lens eventually fell out and broke, the cost to replace the lenses was $55 per lens. Thank you for nothing the cost of your lack of service will be greater than if you just helped out a customer that has spent thousands of dollars with you and will never give you a penny again. YOU SUCK!!!!!!! read more
