Well I had not eaten my dinner yet and it was very late into the evening, worse a sunday night, way past my usual dinner time. I had an unusual strong urging for Chinese food, but not Americanized. I really really do not like Americanized Cantonese Chinese food. So being I was in downtown Fort Lauderdale at the time, I had to drive fast to get to the place I knew about 23 miles in Pembroke Pines before they closed. So I was under the assumption that I was headed down to a place that I had been to before, that serves authentic Chinese Cantonese food. But in reality I was mistakenly going to a place I had never been to before that served Americanized Cantonese food. The place I had been to before had many good yelp reviews, and so did this place. Which is what confused me, because I did not remember the name of the place I had been to before. Once I arrived I realized I was at the wrong place and it was to late to leave and go to the place I knew. The bad signs were already manifesting, the people who worked at the front counter spoke perfect unaccented English though Chinese and the patrons in the restaurant were all westerners. There was not one oriental face in sight. I realized I just had to deal with the situation and order to go, or deal with a worse situation. Whats worse? How about Fast food. I ordered szechuan chicken with an extra quart of rice and two spring rolls to go. As expected the food was not palatable to me at all. The szechuan chicken was mildly spicy with a bland taste, but it was edible if you're really hungry. The spring rolls were even worse, I could only eat one of them. They had next to no taste at all, though huge and full of vegetables. The food altogether reminded me of a frozen dinner from. What did I learn from this, nothing, because I know better. If anything I feel like a horses ass. I nearly forgot after I ordered I found out they had a special menu for Chinese people who want authentic Chinese food, to late, I had already ordered. read more

I don't know why it's taken me this long to eat here but I finally did last week for lunch with my husband. We love Chinese food and have not found one that we have liked in our area. Coming from California we are used to having great Chinese restaurants and it's one thing I miss because I grew up with them and have fond memories of many family dinners at them. For starters the lunch menu is very reasonable and has a good selection. We ordered the Chicken in garlic sauce and the Kung Pao Chicken. It came with soup and tea. The Egg Drop soup was like the ones back in Cali and I loved it. The two entrees were very good as well and nice and spicy like we requested. The place is also very clean and nicely decorated with authentic Chinese decor. We had excellent friendly service when we were there. I'm glad to have finally ate here and will be coming back because I hear they have a different "green menu" that is different from the regular menu with special entrees I would like to try for dinner. read more

This Chinese restaurant is always very busy. There's always a wait when I come here. One of my favorite dishes is the fish fillet with tofu in clay pot. The fish is breaded perfectly with some fried tofu. I love how it comes sizzling hot! I also always order their snow pea tips with garlic. It's one of the best Chinese vegetables. It's sweet and healthy for you. Next, the sweet and sour pork in cantonese style reminds me of a dish my mom used to cook at home. You really should ask for the Chinese menu because they have authentic cooking. There are a lot of servers and busboys in this restaurant. Service is super fast. I never have any problem with them. I've been trying to find a good Chinese restaurant since we moved here last winter. I stopped here on a whim today and I'm glad I did. First off, when you sit you are given free tea, water, and fried Chinese noodles that are served with a fantastic homemade duck sauce and hot mustard. I ordered the steamed pork dumplings and the sesame chicken lunch special that comes with soup and fried rice. The dumplings are the biggest ones I've ever gotten and we're also some of the best tasting. The chicken was made of large chunks of white meat chicken and wasn't drowning in sauce like most places. I walked in here looking for a healthy option and this restaurant delivered. I was pleasantly greeted as I walked in and immediately had hot tea, water, spicy mustard, duck sauce and fried rice noodles at the table. A very cordial young man waited on me and suggested some options. I opted for the dry or no sauce version of the Chicken Delight and was impressed with the size of the serving and with how the vegetables were served in the covered dish so that you may serve yourself as much or as little as you want. There was more vegetables than chicken which I liked and the dish came with a generous serving of white rice. The vegetables were a fresh varied mix and were the perfectly done al dente. My friends tease me about how often I eat Chinese food. So in 60+ years there have been thousands of Chinese meals. Todays take-out lunch was one of the worst ever. Ordered delivery for lunch. Food arrived within 30 minutes. THE KRAB RANGOONS...so delish, crisp and crunchy on the outside then the creamcheese melted in my mouth. So good. THE SESAME CHICKEN lunch portion was huge. Chicken was fresh (not chewy like most Chinese restaurants I know) and all white chunklets dipped in tasty orange sauce with sliced (not diced) garlic. Been going to this restaurant for many years and loved it. My Wife and 2 Girls always order the same thing and after part of the food was served to us I was told I must now increase my order to meet a minimum that we NEVER had to meet in the past by this waiter who has served us many, many times previously. He was quite rude and disagreeable over it and even if this is now a policy don't wait to bring the food to the table and let us start eating only now to advise us rather than at the time of placing the order there is a problem. We were nicely greeted and seated, the bus boy was nice and we had the same waitress from the last visit. Food and refills for the water came in a good pace. We had wanton soup but my dad noticed that the stuff inside the wanton was too cold to complain but mine was fine. The egg rolls was fine too. We all had sweet and sour chicken expect for my mom who had pepper steak. They are good. For desert I had vanilla ice cream, brother chocolate, dad had pasticcio, and my mom had pineapple chunks. I think our food that the waitress packed was coming to the table after we paid and left the table and the busboy was coming towards me to tell us that we are forgetting our leftovers, how nice of him. So I ordered the sweet and sour chicken lunch special just to be told that: You have to pay extra for the sweet and sour sauce (which I didn't). When they handed me my takeout bag apparently there was sweet and sour sauce in the bag, so while I'm walking back to my car the staff RUNS out after me and literally rips the sweet and sour sauce out of my bag. "You didn't pay for this!", the woman yells at me... I didn't say I word except "Take your sauce". Now I'm thinking, when I get home this food better be good. Then I did. The "lunch" special wasn't actually a lunch special it was about half the size of a typical takeout chinese food lunch special. The chicken was overcooked and bland, while the rice was disgusting... It literally tasted like cigarettes. They didn't include an egg roll or soup and didn't give me a fork, but were thoughtfully deceptive enough to put the fortune cookie and napkins in an egg roll sleeve so when you peek into the bag you think there's an actual egg roll. We came here to have a nice sitdown family dinner. I eat very small portions and asked to have what was over 90% of my meal- cashew chicken, and egg roll to go. My other family members also had some leftovers. They took all of our plates and packed it away from the table. They come back with packed items and I take it home. Once home I open my packages to separate the leftovers and notice tgst none of my items were there. All my food which I paid full price for are gone. I found 2 sharp pieces of plastic in the won ton soup!! When returning home with the take order, I split the large size soup between both of my kids.. My 5 year took a few spoonfuls and then spit out a sharp piece of plastic the size of a pinky nail. I couldn't believe. Moments later my 10 year drank a spoonful before I could tell him to stop, next thing you he has a sharp piece of plastic as well but a bit longer. Needless to say, I was upset. It actually scratched the top of the mouth of my 10 year old. I packed up the soup and immediately drove back to Dragon Gate. Upon entering, I requested to speak with the manager. When I showed the manager the pieces of plastic which I preserved in a sandwich bag (and took a picture of), he proceeded to inspect the container in which the soup was placed in. Trying to explain to me how the sharp plastic pieces would've have ended up in the soup. Once he saw there were no defects to the container, he continued to make excuses. Not once did he ask if my child was ok!! I told him, this was dangerous and someone else could possibly get hurt and perhaps he should toss rest of the batches of soup to be cautious.. can you believe at that point he wanted to check what I ordered to be sure the plastic did not come from anywhere else? ?? I told him, I was not looking to get my $25 dollars back from my order (though I had complete right to request it).. I simply want to make sure it doesn't happen again. Really good food! I took my mom here for dinner after a friend highly recommended it to me. He told me to get the pineapple fried rice and it was spectacular. It has shrimp, chicken, and nuts in it and it's enough for two people to share. We also got the Pu Pu Platter which came with two chicken wings, two ribs, two egg rolls, two crab rangoons, two pieces of fried shrimp, and two beef skewers. Everything was good except for the beef skewers which were kinda hard. I didn't give it 5 stars because of that and the fact that they don't give free refills for lemonade. This is one of the few places where you can get authentic Chinese food in south Florida - just like Mom used to make (back when she cooked:-). Their fish and tofu in a clay pot is outstanding (!!!) Great Peking duck. They have a yummy authentic Chinese menu, use authentic techniques and ingredients, and generally have very flavourful food. So ... why only 3 stars? 1. Things that DO NOT belong in my food. There was a dirty penny in the bottom of my fish and tofu. Another time there was ham. Another time a plastic Chinese good luck coin. This happened repeatedly over the 12+ years my family and friends were loyal patrons. This happened to my cousin when she dined there by herself. It happened with at least one dish every time we ate there. The owner, Richie said, "Maybe the cook sees you come in and he does it on purpose." What?!?!? Are you serious? 2. The host, Kevin, was wonderful. He knew every child who came in the restaurant by name. I had not been in the restaurant in a while and then I was in the new Whole Foods Pembroke Pines and there was Kevin - working for whole foods. He was let go. There are a bunch of Yelp tips saying how great Kevin is - agreed. So I don't eat at Dragon Gate every week any more. I've had take out twice since I stopped going there 5 years ago. You will be hard-pressed to find any Chinese restaurants in my Yelp reviews. Why? Not much of a fan at all, of Chinese cuisine. One big turn-off is that I find many Chinese restaurants to not be the cleanest of places. Second, I feel that they would do anything to skimp on food and quality in order to save some money. And third, the service is quite frankly often abrupt and lousy. Dragon Gate has managed to take each of those three problems and completely eliminate them! I love this place, and it's the only traditional, family-owned Chinese restaurant that I will accept going to when my friends say "let's go for Chinese". In fact, they have been shocked by ME being the one to ask for Chinese! So what makes this place so different? Let's start with the fact that it's clean. Good service and pleasant staff. The owner is a pleasure! I have two favorite dishes and can never decide which to get. If I don't find a sharing partner, I just get both and end up with food for the next day. The pan fried noodles with chicken...absolutely delish. The mushu duck...(they beat my former favorite, PF Changs, and that is saying a lot). This dish is perfectly seasoned, and totally irresistable. My one gripe about this place? I really would prefer the WIDE crunchy noodles to be served at the table instead of the thin ones. Not too sure why this restaurant has only 3 and 1/2 stars. When my family and I walked in, the first thing we saw was their beautiful fish tank with Koi fish and their chef's suggestion board. It was nice that they drew some things related to Easter for the month of April. We were welcomed by the hostess and the girls at the front desk. As we sat down, the busgirl walked out with our hot tea and noodles. Being our first time there, we weren't too sure what to eat. The waitress recommended us a few dishes and we got them all! It wasn't like a typical American Chinese dishes, but more of the authentic side of their restaurant. I will definitely be ordering off their authentic menu more often. Of course, we still ordered some regular dishes like Krab Rangoons, fried rice and general chicken. I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends and family!! read more
