He definitely had some kind of head cold or something which was making a little nervous considering whats going on with the Virus.Shouldnt be there if your sick. 3 couples in the whole place but thats probably because whats going on. On a snowy winter night, my dad and I didn't feel like cooking but didn't want to travel far for our Chinese food. So we dragged ourselves out into the cold and ended up at Dragon Light. While it was worth putting on a coat for, I can't say it was the most exciting meal ever. If you want ambiance, forget it: once you get past the novelty of the big red lanterns bobbing outside in the wind, indoors the place is dominated by booths padded in aqua vinyl. The food was standard Chinese-American: crab Rangoon, Mongolian beef and kung pao beef were all on the expected spectrum, nothing outstanding, nothing terrible. Our waiter started out rather brusque but eventually warmed enough to tease me about how I wasn't eating my vegetables (sorry, I don't like green peppers!) Overall, Dragon Light wasn't a total drag, but I bet you could find something more exciting if you tried. read more

I'm from Chicago born and raised I've been to hundreds of Chinese restaurants over the last 50 years and moved to Joliet recently. A friend who grew up here but now lives in Florida told me Dragon light was the place to try.I wish he would have told me sooner.I tried several other places and wouldn't go back to any of them. The food that we ordered tonight was terrible. The other thing is we were charged a $2.98 Covid 19 Service Charge. When I placed our order nobody told me about this charge. First time trying this local spot for Chinese. Fresh ingredients and excellent preparation of dishes. The appetizers were just enough and tasty. Soup was hot and flavorful. We had Sweet and sour pork and Dragon Delight with chicken fried rice. Use of fresh ingredients and sauces that were not too thick or "gummy". Service was excellent. I need to update this review while my disappointment is still palpable. I swung by this joint after work for some spicy fried rice - against my better judgement, reminded of all the let downs of meals long passed, and what I got can only be described as extremely bland. My large spicy fried rice was extremely oily, extremely greasy, and seriously did not taste like it had even an ounce of seasoning. I've searched high and low but no trace of salt exists within that container. It also is not spicy, either, save for the scattering of jalapeños. I mean, how does fried rice taste this bland? There's supposed to be soy sauce, right? Guys? Right? And if a place can't get fried rice right, I have no confidence in their ability to get anything else right. Came here for dinner today with my husband. We expected a warm, delicious meal but did not get anything close to that. The food and dishes reaked of a strong fish smell, our lo mein was luke warm and the service was not great. On top of that we tipped a little below what we normally do at other restaurants (because of our experience) and the waitress stood over our head and asked my husband to increase the tip amount (which is not a required rule by the restaurant). I ordered from Dragon Delight tonight like I usually do. Asked for no mushrooms in anything b/c i have family members allergic to them, yet still got mushrooms. I called to inform them and instead of being helpful they argued with me about what I ordered. After some time it was obvious I was getting no where so I said forget it. While eating dinner my wife bit into one of our crab rangoons and bit into a staple that had been cooked into it. The food was good, portions are large, and prices are fair. So, I would order from Dragon Light again, but only for takeout or delivery, because the service inside the restaurant is horrible. Right after we were seated, our waiter shuffled over, tossed down the menus, and barked, "what you want to drink?" His questions were more like orders to us, "what you want to eat?" We needed a few extra minutes, since my friends had to help their grandma read the menu. He gave us a few minutes, but remained only steps away from the table. He then stood silently and stared us down while we read the menus, while grandma muttered, "watch out for him, he's rude." So apparently this guy has a reputation. We ordered. "You want rice?" Yes we want rice. "Dinner?" No, just the rice. "Dinner?" He kept asking if we wanted the dinner, but didn't elaborate. He came back with soup. My friend sat with his arms placed on the table in front of him. The waiter shoved the bowl of soup onto the table and swatted at his arm, indicating he should move. There is no reason to ever eat Chinese at any other restaurant other than this one. I have eatin at many around the area and NONE can compare to this place. The portions are humongous, the prices are cheep and the service is fantastic. I always eat sweet and sour chicken. Most Chinese places are 90% breading and 10% chicken (or cat depending). Dragon light is more like 90% chicken (certified no cat restaurant) and 10% breading. the sauce is nice and thick (not runny like most places) do not bother with any other Chinese.. its pointless. Q: 5-star Chinese dining in the Joliet area? A: F*ck yeah! Q: Seriously? A: F*ck yeah! And stop making me repeat myself. I hadn't had Chinese food until I had Dragon Light. Everything about this place screams standard Chinese fare: typical looking menu, standard sign outside, dragon decor, and an all Asian staff, however the food is in another league. My wife (who believes Panda Express is the pinnacle of Chinese Cuisine) bit into her Crab Rangoon and said "what's that?" throwing it down in disgust. I looked at it and took a bite and told her in my nicest voice "Sweetie, that's crab...real crab". She likes the ones with cream cheese and a piece of imitation crab passed over it for slight flavor. My wife ordered General Tso's chicken which came with a very light breading like a 20/80 ratio of breading to meat, which most Chinese places actually flip. I got the Kung Bao Beef and it Kung Baoed my ass. The portions are generous and the dining room has a theme (it seems like the dining room of most places is an after thought). I worked at a Chinese restaurant for 6 years growing up so I think I know what to look for and how many of them fail. Dragon Light is great -- it's clean (which frankly is where many of these places fall short), the service is great, and the food and prices are really good. Their lunch menu (dine-in) is the icing on the cake. You get hot tea, a soup, an egg roll, a side of fried rice AND an entree for about $5-6. That's almost unheard of these days. This has to be the worst Chinese restaurant I've ever eaten in. My dear grandmother wanted to take my mother and I out for lunch, and she suggested this place as an old favorite. As we pulled up, my grandmother thought the place was closed: There looked to be no cars. But I knew better: I'd found the place on Google Maps. Well, maybe I should've told her it was closed. I was so disappointed in this place despite wanting to like it. It was so great to hear Cantonese in the middle of Illinois, and to have a pot of hot tea at the table included. Few places go that far these days. But that was where it ended. The lunch specials were cheap, at least. And came with a choice of two soups. Both appeared to have the same base, which was funky, difficult to identify the flavor but not pleasant. The individually wrapped saltines were clearly ancient. I haven't seen a saltine that stale in years. Then the mains came. The shrimp dish was absolutely drowned in this thick brown sauce. It appeared to be the same sauce that was dressing the pork and beef. The pork, which I had, tasted weird... and the veg was just awful. Undercooked bell peppers are not pleasant to eat. Each dish came with a ladle-size scoop of rice, well-coated in soy sauce, and a rock-hard egg roll. You know, maybe this place was cool in the past. Maybe the take-out isn't as bad as the dine-in. But from my experience they were way off the mark, serving nothing authentic, and nothing done with care. I'm sorely disappointed, and will not be returning. read more

We ordered, pot stickers, crab ragoon, shrimp fried rice, beef chow mein, orange chicken, chop suey and sesame chicken. It was about $50 after delivery but well worth it and plenty for left overs! To start off we get sat and the server threw the menus down on the table, then after he came back to take our order, he came with his mouth full of food and asked us what we wanted. First we got Crab Rangoon, which was really good and even had big chunks of crab in it. Then I got general tso which was very blan, no flavor at all to it. My husband got BBQ porkh which was also very plain and no flavor... It was really disappointing! So overall, I would not go there again, too plain and bad service. You would think that living in Chicago, I would find Chinatown to be the spot to hook up with some outstanding Chinese food. Well of course it is but I would hesitate for an instant to take the drive from the north side of Chicago all the way out to Joliet to go to this place again. I have had a few people highly recommend this place and they did not let me down in the least. The place does not look like much from the outside or the inside. Everything was clean and well kept but it looks like about 1000 other Chinese restaurants. Do not judge a book by its cover as the best is yet to come. The egg rolls were cooked perfectly, nice and fat, and not greasy at all. The wonton soup blew me away. It tasted great and was probably had more "stuff" in it than any other wonton soup that I have ordered. For my main course I ordered my favorite: your basic beef and broccoli. It was fantastic. The sauce was not very heavy and not very salty at all. It was an excellent choice. I ended up taking over half of it home with me as they gave me so much of it. An added bonus, the sauce did not turn into a massive lump of jelly lie substance sitting in the refrigerator either. I was thoroughly impressed with this place and I would not hesitate for a moment to make the journey out here for some very good food! read more

I'm not sure where all these glowing reviews came from, but my experiences with this establishment are quite different -- and somewhat scary. I ate here once and got really sick. Since then, in passing conversation with at least three other people I know, they, too have said they have visited here and grown ill. That tidbit aside, the food here is grievously over-sauced and leaves a nasty aftertaste. Edit I'm editing this review FIVE years later to say...this place is still the same. I don't know what came over me. My Mum and I were hungry, we decided "Hey, it's been five years, let's do this." What a mistake. Oh god, what a mistake. I think this restaurant is WORSE than it was. We ordered soup and kung pao chicken. The soup was basically like tasteless chicken broth but with less flavor than that. The kung pao chicken, a dish that traditionally, at its worst, is still somewhat flavorful and palatable. This was not the case at all. It took spoonfuls of chili, sweet and sour, and soy sauce to make it close to edible. I don't know where the positive reviews for this place are coming from; their patronage either doesn't know that better things exist or they're just so used to this crappy food that it don't matter. Who knows? The waitress was almost intolerable, but that's a story for another time, folks. I generally dislike Chinese food because most places usually use such low quality, sketchy ingredients, so for me to enjoy a meal at a Chinese restaurant is rarity. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by my meal at Dragon Light. It was a quality, tasty Chinese dinner at an incredibly reasonable price. My aunt and uncle insisted on taking me here for a big family dinner, claiming it was the best Chinese restaurant in town. I thought they were over-hyping the place, but really, it was pretty darn good! I had the sesame chicken dinner, which came with soup, egg roll, choice of rice, and a beverage, all for about $8. The egg drop soup had a nice flavor and the egg roll was stuffed full of meat and veggies (way better than the usual over-battered egg rolls with hardly any filling). My sesame chicken was great, not overly sweet with good quality chicken (not sketchy at all!), and had lots of meat and fresh steamed vegetables. The portions were a pleasant surprise as well. Maybe I had filled up on the huge bowl of soup and giant eggroll, but I was barely able to eat half of my portion of sesame chicken and ended up having to take the rest home. Service was also very good. Our waiter was an older guy who had clearly been there and done that, but he was efficient, fast, and managed to keep us on our toes with his joking around. Though pretty empty on the weekday night we visited, the place was clean and nicer than your average Chinese joint in terms of interior.
