Absolutely awful! The Yu Hsiang Eggplant was completely bland with big flabby pieces of eggplant. The squid dish we ordered had a strange taste and the pieces of squid were so tough they were almost impossible to eat. The Moo Shi Pork was edible, but not anywhere close to as good as we've had at dozens of other places.The spicy dishes had no spice. Went here a few times a year ago or so, eventually the prices went up slightly. But now if you havent seen the menu, the chicken fingers large is 14.25 yet at many of the other chinese food areas they are 10 bucks. Same goes for many of the appetizer items like teriyaki sticks ect. They are literally the most expensive chinese restaurant in town for a regular or sub standard chinese food. It is a tiny place with a few tables, but it is not really an eat in restaurant. We ordered take out. Very basic. Moo Shi chicken, and chicken with broccoli on rice. The food was quite good. The large size portions were more than generous. This includes the rice, that is ordered separately. We had enough for another meal. Good service; they were right on time with our order. We also noticed that if you get a large portion, a second order of the dish can be obtained at half price (helpful if you are having a party). Prices are reasonable. We have no complaints. read more

Food is average for chinese in the city. The worst part about this place is the 1.5 hours it takes for delivery. So plan for that.

My partner and I stumbled upon this establishment a few nights ago and decided to try it out. The restaurant is pretty old and gives off "hole-in-the-wall" vibes, so it felt promising. They served Chinese-American food at pretty reasonable prices. We ordered the jumbo shrimp with pea pods and the chicken pan fried noodles for takeout. Service was pretty quick. We waited for about 15 minutes. However, the food did not meet our expectations. Some of the ingredients did not taste very fresh. The shrimp with pea pods was okay, but the pea pods felt mushy. Meanwhile, the noodles were quite hard as if they had dried due to being left out for several hours. The flavor was not right. The only positive was that the chicken was very well cooked. It is possible that maybe we didn't get the right dishes or maybe we visited too late (around 8:30pm). Regardless, I will unfortunately not be revisiting anytime soon. read more

Ordered out on a Saturday night, food was ready quickly. Got two of the combo plates: pork fried rice and general gau's chicken, and lo mein with chicken tenders(fingers?) food was good, I really enjoyed the lo mein in particular, although the protein portion of the general gaus was small, about the size of a small avocado (getting Mexican food later so that was the first comparison I came up with). The chicken fingers(tenders?) were the breaded and fried kind with doughy exterior which I had forgotten existed, wouldn't necessarily recommend but to be fair I didn't use the provided sauce or eat the until the next day. I ended up here today after realizing neighboring Kamiza Sushi didn't open until 4! This place is a small walk-up and order Chinese restaurant and my girlfriend and I were the only ones there when we came around 2PM on a Monday. However, between 2-2:30 at least 3 more people came in for take-out and dine-in, leading me to believe that it's somewhat popular due to the odd hour. I ordered a small Chicken and Mixed Vegetables: 7.25 + 0.50 tax = $7.75.My girlfriend ordered a small Chicken Fried Rice for 5.50 and I believe her total was $5.85. The food came in about 10 minutes and included soy sauce and a fortune cookie. There was much more vegetable than chicken, and after eating all of the chicken and vegetables I liked I just tossed the rest. As such, I don't consider it a great value since I expect an $8 sandwich somewhere else would be two servings. The dish was not very visually appealing--it looked (and tasted) pretty bland. The chicken was fine, and some of the vegetables were tasty--particularly the carrots and broccoli. The other vegetables (onions, mushrooms, three vegetables I wasn't familiar with), were tasteless. Adding soy sauce didn't help much because the broth that the dish was cooked in was pretty slimy and coated everything. There was also an odd smell that turned me off (probably one of the vegetables). The chicken fried rice was decent--not bad, but nothing special. We typically have good experiences at Dragon Star, but we tried to get our order delivered tonight, and it was a disaster. I ordered over the phone and was told it would be an hour to get the food (a long time, but understandable because it's Labor Day and I'm sure they are busy). After an hour and twenty minutes, I called to ask about our order, and they said it would be there soon. After another fifteen minutes and no contact from the driver, we called again to ask where the food was. They said they could not reach us because we had given them the wrong phone number, but they read it back to us and the phone number was correct. We asked why they didn't ring the doorbell because they had our apartment number, and we were home the entire time. They just responded that they had called several times and it was our fault for not picking up (again, we verified that we had given the correct number and did not receive any calls). Finally, we ended up just walking down to the restaurant to pick up the food because the driver had brought it back. I asked for a discount because the food was 45 minutes late by the time we got there, and we had not been contacted a single time. They refused to give any discount because I had already paid over the phone. Again, the food here is generally good, but after this experience, it will be a while before I order from them again, and I will never do delivery from them. read more

I was debating between a 2 or 3 star, but then I decided I didn't want to sugarcoat anything. I must say that almost every part of the meal failed to meet my expectations. I ordered the beef teriyaki/egg roll with pork fried rice lunch special for take out. Right off the bat, I was a little surprised when I was told that my meal would be ready in a measly 5-10 minutes. When I got my food, I noticed immediately that the meat/egg roll portion of the meal was very lacking. Yes, the portion size was "big" but the size of it was almost entirely made of the rice - the cheapest part of the meal. That was disappointing. The food itself was mediocre as well. The rice, which constituted 80-90% of the food, was too stiff. I suspected that it might not have been fresh, as it reminded me vaguely of day-old microwaved rice. The price was cheap (actually not even, compared to what you would get in Chinatown), but I'm not sure that I'll come back again after my experience. read more

That moment you get the "Dutchess" title at your local Chinese food joint (#winning). Dragon Star has been around for as long as I can remember. Growing up, this little place was our go-to for ordering in (we were super health conscious, clearly) and I can't recall a single time they messed up our pick up/delivery order. I mean, that's pretty crazy. There's usually some hiccup: the mystery of the disappearing bowl of rice that never made it to your door, the missing beverages, or the, "Oh, you wanted chicken teriyaki, not beef? Oops." situation. The only thing Dragon Star forgot was more duck sauce (again, we were suuuuper health conscious). That being said, if you're looking for a healthy meal, your options here are limited (and you probably shouldn't be looking at Yelp pages for Chinese food establishments...). If you're looking for something quick and filling, go here. The portions are generous, especially their lunch combinations. The prices are reasonable. I wouldn't say this place is "cheap," but I certainly wouldn't consider it expensive, especially given its location. The boneless ribs, lobster sauce, chicken and beef teriyaki, Peking ravioli, chicken and broccoli are all on my rotation. The lo mein and fried rice are also pretty yummy. This has been my favorite Chinese food restaurant since I was a kid (as well as the favorite of my entire family). The food is always amazing, I never want to get Chinese food from anywhere else. Great staple of Washington Square. The chinese food here is not overly greasy and cooked well. Evidence for this is open kitchen where you can see the cooks cutting the ribs, steaming rice, and frying foods. The foods here are not ordered from the same eery cloned that all americanized chinese food I have had in america. I concur with the writer who is reminded of old Brooklyn chinese mom and pop places. For example, the pork fried rice is home made with large chunks of pork, distinct fresh soy sauce coloring, and different sized vegetable slivers. The family that owns the restaurant are very diligent and dedicated to their restaurant. They're very friendly. Don't let the bland entrance fool you -- it's a great find. The dine-in area is not very impressive, though, so it's best as a take-out restaurant. I recommend the section A combo specials -- you get either chicken wings, BBQ ribs (yes!), egg roll, crab rangoon, beef teriaki (yes) or others in addition to plenty of up to 30 meals with pork-fried rice. read more

We ordered for delivery: wonton soup, egg rolls, and 3 main dishes. Food was awful!! There was not a hint of garlic or ginger typical of Chinese food. In fact, there was very little taste of any kind. Egg roll wrappers were doughy and chewy. Filling tasted like cough medicine. There was hardly any sauce with any of the 3 dishes. So, the very night I wrote my last review, my husband and I ordered in from Dragon Star. I decided to go for something new and on the way to pick up the food, I realized I had forgotten to ask for no mushrooms in my food. I was pretty upset, as I really hate mushrooms (it's a consistency thing) and they tend to ruin a dish for me. My husband assured me they would remake it for me - I disagreed. He pointed out that we order from there pretty often, so of course they would do it for us. And I ordered a fairly common dish, so they could just give it to the next person to order it. He was wrong. Apparently the man at the counter was somewhat rude and refused to remake the dish for us. Luckily, I was able to pick out the 'shrooms, but this really put a damper on our experience, especially considering I had JUST written a good review. :( read more

Come here for some greasy take out. When you are in the mood for some gut busting chinese stop by or give them a call for some average chinese food for cheap. For less than $8 you get a big order of General Gau's with a choice of small appetizer. They are heavy on the rice (white or pork fried) compared to the portion of chicken you get but you def get two meals out of it. For less than $20 I got a dinner order of the General, two friedn spring rolls, and an order of singapore noodles. I asked the guy there for some suggestions when I told him I wanted noodles. I got some wide noodle suggested to me first and when I told him I was looking for vermicilli he pointed me to singapore noodles. I really liked it so I'm glad that he brought that to my attention. read more

This isnt a review of the food which was pretty good but the service and misinformation being thrown around. We called before New years and asked for delivery they said they dont deliver until 5, fair enough. Said we'd call tomorrow they said ok. We called the very next day and asked after 5 for delivery they said they are not doing deliveries but we can pickup. We werent at a location we could drive. This was driving my girlfriend nuts as she wanted to try this place for some reason. The third day we called but then we were told they are not doing parts of the menu, they werent doing the combos. which we thought ok we will have to rethink our order. We ended up ordering entire portions of food, we thought why not its the start of 2020. We ordered and waited for delivery, The delivery driver that showed up we gave him a tip of 12 dollars, he then yells hey its 10%! Its New Years! We said the tips in your hand, he said no, 10%, we paid 60 dollars for our food and you got 12 dollars! thats over 10%! He started swearing and left the door. Are you kidding me! I tend to search for the best reasonably price among the surrounding restaurants.. i came to Dragon Star restaurant to give it a try.. the counter person is very attentive and helpful . My order came out in approximately 10 minutes fresh and hot .. surprisingly it taste like chinatown dishes and with a huge portion . What can I say? I just love this place. It is old school, all to-go Chinese food, nothing fancy, but very good overall quality and delicious. Best crab rangoon I've ever had! Generously filled so the cheesy-crab stuff literally drips out as you're eating it. Excellent chicken fingers and chicken teriyaki, too. I also love their lo mein and ma po tofu. I hate to do this to dragon star because they do have some pretty good chinese food but delivery has been an real issue lately. We have ordered from them twice in the past month and it has taken forever. Three weeks ago. We ordered crab rangoon, general gaos and pork fried rice. They said 45 minutes. It took 1 hour and 50 minutes. The food was ice cold. As we have had there food a good 15-20 times we figured it was a fluke. Last Friday night. We ordered crab rangoons, pork fried rice and wings. Wait time 45 minutes. It took two phone calls, and 2 hours and 10 minutes to get our food. All the food was ice cold. Dragon Star you are slipping. I think if we get Dragon Star again, which my fiancee is refusing to do, it will be pick up. 2 hours and 10 minutes is unacceptable. read more

This is comfort food at its best. We always cook a full pot of our own white rice and prefer any of the following for take-out delivery as complements to said rice. I swear you feel greasy just being in close proximity to the food--if you can smell it, it's already too late. However, do not feel discouraged if you, too, are a slob: the food is criminally delicious and a balm, albeit a greasy one, for the hungry soul.
