This might be my new go to spot for AYCE hotpot during lunch hours. My two reasons are, their mala broth is amazing and is actually spicy. Second reason is, the quality of their meat selection is excellent. Literally tastes so fresh and clean. I love that it's thinly sliced, too. Maybe I have a third reason too lol their dumplings, their dumplings (chives or cabbage), are so tasty. It comes out steaming hot in a whole order. Please try! We came here Monday for lunch. My favorite hot pot spot that has ruined me to everywhere else! If you love that mala numbing spice you HAVE to try La Mei! They do AYCE From 11-4pm every day which is SO worth it for like $32! You can choose your broth (and you can do split broths)-- we always do the vegetable oil and the mushroom broth which are both sooo yummy (if they ask you how spicy say mild!! I can handle lots of spice and trust me you don't need more). Then you can order meats, veg, tofu, seafood, mushrooms, and noodles. Definitely get the hand pulled noodles! Pretty good hot pot place, we did everything à la carte and it was about $45 per person. The fish here isn't as good even though we got the more expensive option, it's a little too sinewy. Otherwise good broth, meat, and decent variety of vegetables. They have water cress, quail eggs and winter melon, but don't have pumpkin. We were seated pretty quickly, service was fine, parking can be challenging in the area. It seems like they have AYCE during lunch which id want to try next time. read more

We decided to try LaMei Hot Pot again the other day, this time for lunch! I wasn't aware that they had AYCE lunch before; not sure if it's a new change but they offer AYCE daily, from 11:30am-4:30pm! They offer AYCE hotpot, regular + premium/"VIP", with the regular AYCE price @$28.95/pp & VIP for an additional $10/pp, so $38.95. We opted for the regular AYCE option. What we ordered for regular AYCE: -BROTH: two flavor broth, bones & tomato -sliced premium beef -sliced premium chicken -handmade shrimp paste -sliced flounder -fish tofu -oyster mushrooms (just realized as I'm typing that we never received this after 2 orders lol) -baby bok choy -napa cabbage -fresh corn -hand pulled noodles Thoughts: Not too shabby. For the price of regular AYCE hotpot, it reminds me of Happy Lamb, as the prices are very similar. Happy Lamb has more variety available for regular AYCE including free drinks, fish balls w/ roe, etc. Also prefer the broths at Happy Lamb more BUT I will say, the meat cuts are better at LaMei. It has been around a year since we lasted tried LaMei for the first time. The first time, we came for a la carte hotpot dinner & found that our experience was just all right. With our most recent visit for AYCE lunch, I would say that my opinion hasn't changed much. Really great service and casual, bubbly ambiance. But the food just didn't hit for me. I don't understand the shared pots because we were constantly stealing each other's food and leaving over each other to access a different broth flavor. The vegetable variety just wasn't there for me, and was expensive and in paltry portions though great presentation. The pork broth was blank and the MILD spicy beef tallow broth numbs your mouth and makes your sweat - not in a fun way. Very limited sauce bar. LaMei Hotpot in Brookline offers a great AYCE lunch option. Priced at about $29pp, the broth is included as well as your basic meats, veggies, noodles, fishballs, and a few specialty items. There's a VIP section which for an additional $10pp, you can order the more premium meats and other delicacies like frog legs, ribeye, etc. If you plan to come during lunch time, I'd recommend making a resy because this place is pretty small for a hotpot restaurant! Bathrooms single bathrooms but are clean and well maintained. Staff is friendly and they even gave us a free shaved ice dessert knowing that we were celebrating a birthday! I wrote a 4/5 review last year after going to LaMei as a group, but I recently went as a solo diner and wanted to write about that experience. I don't actually know of any other all you can eat hotpot places (that also include meat) where you can go as a solo diner and feel like you're not taking up a huge table by yourself. But I was hungry this weekend and decided to try this out on my own. First, they offered to seat me at a normal table, but because I was by myself I didn't want to take up that much space. So instead, they offered a bar seat, and on the bar there were individual hotpot burners built into the bar itself! It was great - the smaller personal burner did only fit a small pot with one broth, but it was exactly what I wanted as a solo diner. I had my own spot with my pot in front of me, and plenty of counter space to order different ingredients. Being at the bar, the service was also incredible as there was always someone walking by or popping in to see if I needed anything. My subsequent orders and water refills happened almost immediately, and it was an all around great experience. Some highlights, similar to last time: 1. The bone broth is very rich and flavorful. After having some meat in it, the broth takes on this lovely thick consistency with a lot of meat flavor. 2. The lamb is the best of the included meats for me - really large pieces with a good balance of fat and meat. Really flavorful. 3. There wasn't dessert this time, but they had plenty of oranges which helped with flavor fatigue, and the sauce bar was adequate. 4. The shrimp comes pre-peeled and deveined, and if you cook it for the right amount of time it had this really great seafoody flavor. I overcooked one and it wasn't as good but that was my fault. All in all, the ingredients are good but there are definitely some that stand out above the others. I think as a normal review with a group, I'd still give this a 4/5, but as a solo diner, this was a great experience deserving a 5/5. The service was attentive, I felt very comfortable eating on my own, and it felt like I was able to get all of the benefits of group hotpot without having to find others to come with me. I came for the lunch AYCE which now runs Monday-Sunday 11:30-4:30. It's such a good deal and a variety of meats, veg, and tofu. You can order multiple rounds of food and the sauce bar is included. They have buffet. The basic set is like $30, with more premium ingredients, it'll be $10 more. They say their broth is more spicy than other restaurants so we got the mild. But the mild is very mild to us. The mushroom broth smells very good. When the meat was first served, they don't look too appetizing. But the taste is pretty good. The spicy marinated beef is super spicy. The shrimp paste is pretty good. Their hand pulled noodles are really hand pulled as they did it right before they were served. The place is small, but the food and service is good. I was about to get the medium level of spicy beef tallow broth, but the waiter insisted that I get mild instead. I listened to him and I am very thankful because I don't think I would be alive eating the medium level LOL. It's spicier and I think tastier than my favorite: Happy Lamb. They even have the same sauce ingredients, so I didn't have any issue making my go-to sauce. The regular bone broth is good too and you can definitely taste the bone flavor. The meat is good quality, but veggies and noodles selection can be bigger. If they were AYCE all day, I would come all the time. I loved the mango shaved snow. Overall, I would say this was a good experience - of what we ordered, I enjoyed everything. However, I wish we were given a bit more guidance on how much to order. Huge shout out to the most awesome waiter -A Tan ( hope I got his name right... Omg I'm getting old,can't remember his name right now!). Service here is great, very attentive. A Tan even went out of his way to help me with an unusual request even though I was not assigned to him. So if you stop by and are lucky enough to get seated in his section, you'll get great service that's typically not found in Chinese restaurants ( sad but true). Now onto the food. FINALLY went here after walking by it so many times and seeing all of my friends go to it. Hmmmmm ... so many thoughts. I really wanted to LOVE it and have it be my new favorite hot pot place because everyone else seems to rave about it, but my experience really didn't fulfill this destiny. I still really liked it ... but I can't say it's my favorite or that I am in love with it. First, I found it excruciatingly overpriced. What is $100 at another hot pot place was almost $200 here. For me, it just wasn't worth the extra cost. I eat a lot of veggies and simple beef, which is basic at every hot pot place, so for me ... why pay like almost double??? I will say, however, is that they have a lot of exotic meats and offerings. I'm thinking that this may be the reason people love this place so much. Unfortunately, I pass on those items. Second, the quality control of this place really could use some work. They appear to have a more upscale, sophisticated vibe, in order to have a higher price point. They have the exotic meats and offerings, as well as coat covers for your coat. All nice ... but PLEASE have clean dishes and utensils!!! There were many dishes at the "sauce" and "side dish" bar that were not 100% clean. Still had dried food on them. Had to search for a bowl that was clean. Then ... a glass and a utensil at our table were also not clean. Our waiter brought us a clean glass, but he brought us the wrong utensil replacement. We had to ask for a new utensil again, which appeared to annoy him. Kind of off-putting. I Lastly, some things I really loved about this place were its mushroom broth and its hand pulled noodles. Both items were very tasty and stood out when compared to other hot pot places. Those things will help me come back to this place one day to try it again and hopefully have a better experience. I think this is one of the best hot pot restaurants in Boston. I came here with some friends on a Saturday night. For drinks, they do have some cocktails and frozen margaritas including Pina Colada and Strawberry Daiquiri. The daiquiris were good, but didn't have that much alcohol. However, my friend got a green mixed drink that was mostly alcohol. For the hot pot broth, we ordered half mala and half beef bone. Be warned that the mala is extremely spicy! They have a sauce station where they have a large variety of different sauces and condiments including soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame sauce, chili oil, barbecue sauce, vinegar, garlic, peanut, cilantro, and green onions. On top of the sauce station they also have oranges, peanuts, and tomatoes. Their hotpot menu is huge and includes a lot of interesting items such as pig brain, beef omasum, duck blood, and goose intestines. Besides hotpot, the menu also has dishes that the kitchen can prepare. For the hot pot, I loved what we ordered which was the short rib, high choice beef, lamb shoulder, quail egg, fishball, mussels, and enoki mushroom. We also ordered the lobster tail, but at $12 for one, we were very disappointed that it was frozen. I would also recommend getting the hand pull noodle because a server will come out and do a little show as they prepare the noodle for you. Came on a snowy Monday evening and there was no wait. Perfect weather for hot pot. They have a rack along the wall where you can hang your coat inside a bag and zip it up so it won't smell after. The fried milk was very crunchy and not too sweet even if dipping in the condensed milk. The Udon is plentiful and enough for 2. The fish balls with fish roe inside were small but still tasty. The beef and lamb pieces were smaller than other places but the quality is also better than some others. We also got chicken gizzard (not pictured). Only issue I have with this is, it was raw and covered in spice seasoning. Once you put it in the pot to cook, the seasoning comes off and mixes into the broth. So now the broth doesn't taste the same. If you want sauce (even soy sauce), they charge $3 per person. I don't know anyone that doesn't need sauce to eat hot pot so don't have a choice. Glad we ventured into Brookline and tried LaMei. Very good variety of exotic and fresh ingredients for hot pot. Had the tri- flavors broths they were so tasty! Bonus w/ the the sauce bar. How do you know I love fermented tofu beancurd sauce? Service was excellent, the waitress asked why I insisted she removed the duck web when it was still full, I said I didn't like it because I wasn't used to the taste, not because it wasn't fresh. Later on, she took it off the bill! That was so kind of her, I wasn't asking for any refund or expected anything. We had another waitress stretching the hand pull noodles at the table. The gal meticulously pulled the noodles until the chewiness, thickness, and softness of that noodles were perfect. I ate every single piece of that hand drawn noodles. LOL. It was sooooo good, better than any hand drawn noodles in Boston that I have been to so far. Went there for dinner. I can't believe you charge for the sauce bar for a hot pot place. There were 6 of us and tacking on an extra $18 for sauce is just appalling. Do you expect people to bring their own sauce? Or not use any sauce while eating hot pot? I sincerely hope you rethink how you charge for soy sauce (which was empty and no one was checking the sauces). I might let it go if you charged each table the $3 fee for sauce but you should not charge each person. The sauce bar was just sauce, some edamame and garlic/cilantro/green onions. Fantastic every time! This is a hot pot or grill where you have one or up to 3 types of broth boiling at the table in front of you and you can cook anything on the menu. The grill is also in the middle of the table, so you can grill meat and eat it right away, cooked exactly the way you like it. They also have a great sauce bar where you can perfect your favorite sauce for dipping. Also, the people there are great.
