This is one of our favorite asian markets and it also is one closer to us! We ventured there recently and the deli smelled so good! We will have to stop and grab some hot food next time. I love this place! It's has so many international food items, you feel like you have just teleported to another world. The prices are fair too. I stocked up on my favorite plantain chips. I got some boba premade teas for my kids and I. They were delicious. They have beautiful dishes, cups, mugs, thermos, bento lunch boxes, tea tiers, chop sticks, flip flops, you name it they have it. My favorite is the huge pots and pans they have. The seafood section is amazing too! The cashier was nice and helped check us out in a timely and accurate manner. As a Vietnamese-American and resident of Blaine, this is my go-to oriental supermarket. This is my go-to spot for instant ramen noodles, Asian condiments (i.e., soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, all the sauce!), fresh lemongrass, 50 lbs of Jasmine rice, snacks, and most importantly, if I'm planning to make my dad's pho recipe from scratch. They have all the cuts of meats that I need to make beef pho that I wouldn't find at Cub Food, Aldi, or Amazon. The price is fair, sometimes a lot cheaper than American grocery stores (i.e., soy sauce, ramen, etc.) I usually get their made-to-order banh-mi sandwiches and fresh spring rolls. I also love that they have Soga Mochi. It is a must-stop treat every time I am there. They do have a spacious private parking lot. Service is good at the deli and there will be someone to help carry out a 50-lb of rice. 4 out of 5 stars because sometimes they can be out of stock and you do not know when more will come in if more is coming. For example, one day there were no fresh pho noodles left. I normally buy the 5-lb pho noodles, but one day there were none and they didn't have smaller bags either. Also, since COVID, they pre-packaged their vegetables. For example, I just want 1-2 jalapenos, not a dozen that are wrapped in plastic. read more

This was our first visit to Dragon Star Supermarket. It does have a great variety for fish and seafood. Live, fresh and frozen. The vegetables selection was huge. Lots and lots to choose from. The fruit selection was about half the size of the vegetable section. Canned goods, sauces, rice and pasta are plentiful. So much to choose from and a great selection. Highly recommend this store if you are looking for a wide variety of sauces, fish, vegetables and pasta. read more

Just a warning do not get their Banh Mi from deli. The bread was not crusty it was some soggy bun. Meat was not good , no flavor . It was the worse sandwich I ever had. Otherwise grocery store has everything you need to make Asian, Spanish and some African dishes. If you never shopped there before , be prepared to walk around looking for your ingredients for awhile . Prices are excellent tho , best deal if you need some veggies as well . They have some veggies that you can't find in other grocery stores. The banh mi sandwich at the Dragon Star deli is freshly made to order and delicious. Regular is just $4.99 and the XL is $8.99 (it is gigantic). Fresh spring rolls and sesame buns along with many other freshly made options make this one of my favorite affordable pick-up options. Also the staff at the deli are so great. Whether it's produce or meat, Sun Foods down the way - as well as tiny Vinai across from Sun Foods - consistently has far fresher offerings of anything both carry at comparable prices. There are a few items that Sun Foods doesn't offer, and at that point I make a list and head for the massive Dragon Star on Minnehaha instead for far better selection of everything Asian. Wow, prepare to be patient and have the time to make your first run through Dragon Star Supermarket. Take your time and do your homework. This will be a must stop if you want to branch out beyond Cub and Byerlys. Incredible selection and even better prices. The produce and herb selections are amazing. The prices will blow you away. We walked away with 4 bags of produce and herbs that would have cost double at a traditional market. Incredible selection of spices. I've picked up a few household items here too, like a ball of string made of plastic paper...so very useful and sturdy for tying! I've been to several Twin Cities Asian markets over the years and Dragon Star is one of the best in the local area. I recently took my parents there for the first time and they appreciated the wide selection, clean & organized store, and several open checkout lanes that made purchasing the items quick. The prices on goods fluctuates with both cheap products as well as some that are more expensive compared to other stores around. We generally like to buy produce, bread (you have to get their bag of 6 telera rolls for less than $2), tofu, and frozen items here because everything's reasonably priced. They have a huge parking lot and in the summer, there's even a cute little farmer's market outside to get fresh veggies. read more

This is such a mixed bag that I don't even know where to begin. But begin, I must... with the produce, the first section of the store. You'll find lots of fresh produce. Lettuce is on the small side and they doubled the price of it at some unknown point in the past year. Boo! Good deal on raw ginger, however. Melamine dishes and fashionable purses and shoes and Buddha sculptures, oh my! It's there for the offering. Not for me. Pricing is so haphazard in the grocery section: not the prices themselves (usually), but how the shelves are marked. Things are stocked near old price tags, often in the wrong spot, and sometimes you'll hunt and never find the price sticker that you were looking for. It's really frustrating at times. However, you'll find lots of good items: unique canned goods, lots of bags of spices, that it's maybe worth the search. Similar to other Asian supermarkets, you'll find large 25-50 pound bags of rice at the front of the store. Checking out, you might encounter long lines. So, in spite of the many negatives, there are enough positives (some good deals and good, unique food, and a good location for us) that keep us coming back, but not nearly as often as we used to. Look, I am Asian through and through...When given a choice I prefer eating a lot of sea creatures. Yes, there are better things than walleyes (yes, I am talking to my 'snobby' MN friends). If you use to 'Americana' grocery stores, this is NOT a place for you. This is a true Asian market: the fruits/produce area is constantly moving(there is a team working constantly to move the items), a very large seafood section(I think it is the largest in the Twin Cities), a very nice deli (hot/cold foods), a huge butcher/meat selection. Yes, there is distinct smell to the place - I usually associate with an Asian market. Did I say they do sell fresh Duran (If you have to ask then you don't understand). Here are few 'negatives': * Their Japanese foods are lacking: i.e. No japanese mayo (Kewpie Brand is a must!) * It has a lot of 'Asian' things, to say it is catered to a certain ethic? That is a stretch. In other words, if you are looking for something your grandma would use back in our home land? This is not that. Yes, I am Vietnamese and usually prefer a Vietnamese grocery for my needs... It is really hard to compare to Dragon Star with the amount of fruits/produce and seafood. I came to Dragon Star on a quest to find the elusive boba to make my homemade bubble tea. As you enter the store they clearly have everything you think would be in an Asian store, so you can imagine my excitement as I neared the end of my journey to finding my wonderful "bubs", that's what I call boba(check out my review of Tii Cup on boba tea). Continuing on the quest, I went up and down the aisles but to no avail. Customer service was excellent as I had up to four different employees helping me find these bubs, but alas they could not be found :( However if you need anything else they probably have it and if you can't find it you can count on their help to look for your elusive item. read more

My wife (Filipina American) wanted to go there today, so I obliged. Prices (when marked) on a lot of items were a tad high. It's large & well-stocked, but be careful of the freshness of items. After examining a half dozen packages of "fresh" jalapeños, I gave up. Each had peppers that were start to spoil -- some just soft, others more visibly deteriorating. The biggest disappointment is that there were many, many items on the shelves with no prices. I refused to put any merchandise in our cart that was not priced. Caveat emptor! If I lived nearby, I'd probably shop there occasionally (just be diligent), but since I don't I'll just continue shopping at Sun Foods. read more

CHECK YOUR RECEIPT!! I recently checked all my receipts from Dragon Mart Supermarket because I realized the total seemed off when I checked the receipt when I got home. I then realized that they have been ADDING items to my receipt that I did NOT purchase at all! I DID NOT BUY ONIONS YET I WAS CHARGED FOR IT. It cannot be a mistake because there was no one after or before me at the check out. I only bought 9 items so it was easy to figure out this receipt. THIS IS CHEATING at its highest form. Poor service. Fish frying service stops accepting orders 1.5 hour before scheduled closing. Employee's response was "close, employee go home now". I showed that it is 1 1/2 hours before scheduled closing but no luck. She just repeats her response with a bit of a smile. End up just leaving the fish i had cleaned and cut that was to be fried. By far one of my favorite asian markets in the area. This place has a wide variety of pretty much any ethnic food you can think of, I also love that they have a full lunch area with a variety of choices for grab and go! Their roast duck is also amazing! As far as asian markets go, this one is huge and can get a little confusing to navigate, but you will always find what you need. First off, though I don't rate a business off of their clientele, but I'll just say don't be surprised if you end up behind a person at the "Speed Lane: 15 Items" register who has 49 items or behind someone driving out of the parking lot who blocks the right-turn only lane but is going straight... Anywho. My overall tip is to come in here 1) with a specific list or 2) with the game-plan to go nuts and admit you're going to come home with a bunch of random ish. Because this market is huge and has tons of items from so many countries - Japan, Korea, China, Mexico, Brazil, to name a few. They have a deli with pre-made foods, seafood market, meat case, an impressively large produce section, non-perishables, lots of frozen food, jewelry, household items, and more. It's both overwhelming and interesting. I was enticed by the grab-and-go food like stuffed rice noodles, fried fish, samosa, cheese wontons, spring rolls, and what looked like made-to-order banh mi. The prices looked great too! However, I was looking for Natto (a Japanese breakfast staple of fermented soybeans) and I asked 3 different employees and each said they didn't carry it... but then I ended up finding it myself. Thanks. The fresh/raw meat areas were really questionable. The fish area was smelly, and not even in just a fishy way, ugh. When I checked out at the register, there was some packaged food that looked like candy - when I asked what it was the cashier said, "I don't know, and it's been sitting here forever so I wouldn't get it" - yikes! read more

The area seems a little sketchy. The actual store is very big and spacious. They have everything from fresh produce and fresh meat to dried groceries and kitchenware. It has a liquor store on the side and they sell FLAVORED SOJU. They are hard to find in Minnesota. I love this store but it does stink a bit due to the meat and live whole fish. Decent Asian supermarket. Not as diversified in the items they carry as the SF Supermarkets I'm used to in Cali, but definitely not bad for this area of MN. I don't buy exotic fruits or seafood so can't comment on those items. But for frozen items, canned and packaged items they have a fairly diverse selection of them. The pricing is not that cheap, but it isn't as expensive as the smaller Asian markets around the near areas. Not as clean as you'd like it to be. Take my two cents- I never buy meat, or regular American veggies from any Asian store (except for like, cilantro and green onions). The meat is usually bad quality, and people usually have subpar sanitation practices, and common vegetables here are always more expensive than regular supermarket prices (unless you find a deal). Rice is always cheaper in an Asian Store. Stay away from the Deli. Looks unfresh and unappetizing and any time I've ever gotten food from there I've always been underwhelmed or regretted my decision read more

If you're looking for a large northern suburb Asian Supermarket, then look no further. This place comes equipped with a LV discount table near checkout and an enclosed jewelry shop. What was once another grocery chain is now Dragon Star. Seriously, this place is huge and it comes equipped with all the things you're looking for in an Asian Market. The deli counter is AMAZING. All the little treats your parents old Asian friends used to give you are here. If you're looking for a decent inexpensive banh mi sandwich, find it here! Egg rolls, spring rolls, chicken, pork, curry noodles...it's all at the deli counter! Prices seem right in line and the fish and meat selection is fine. I can't complain. If you have extra cash, there's even an Asian Farmer's Market outside. Stop in as places like this need support from the community. Just be patient when it comes to waiting to check out. Nice decent grocery store everything packed really nice and clean, the only thing is prices here are even higher then your average grocery store. And you have to bag your own food which i thought was kinda annoying. We bought a lot of items so it took a lot of time and the next person couldn't really check out or get their stuff untill i was done bagging and I was there solo so it took forever. Really happy this grocery store has opened near us! Always a pain to have to go to Saint Paul or Nicollet Ave to do my shopping for Asian ingredients. Dragon star took over the old Rainbow foods and is huge! Great selection in produce, meats and everything you can think of when looking for ingredients to make any type of Asian cuisine. They also have a restaurant area to get good good and pick up staples like Banh Mi sandwiches and many other bakery items and dishes in case you don't feel like cooking and want to eat certain dishes. Everything seems fresh and well stocked. Much easier to navigate and find what I need unlike the other big Asian supermarket in the area, Sun foods. read more

Thanks to a friend's recommendation...this Asian grocery mart is actually bigger than what I thought. The prices are reasonable, love the layout of the place and they even have a deli area. Super happy with the deli food...delicious and cheap. Their Vietnamese sandwiches (Bahn Mi) are fresh and delicious. I frequent this place for the cheap meats and the made to order Bahn mi and egg rolls. The supermarket itself is huge with lots to choose from. Exotic fruits and veggie, cuts of meat from areas of the animal that I didn't even know were edible, and lots of dry goods and seasonings. When I first started coming here, the smell of fish wrecked havoc on my senses, but they have recently started packaging their fish and the smell is a whole lot better. They also rearranged the produce section and now it's easier to navigate. I usually buy frozen chicken and pork chops for over half of what they charge at the chain grocery stores. The egg rolls are pre made and always hot and greasy. I order at least 5 of them every time I come. 85 cents each yo! The Bahn mi sandwiches here is what began my obsession with these things. Everything is so fresh and made to order. They offer roast beef, turkey, ham, and some other pork meat. So good. And cheap! A small sandwich is $2.99. Oh dear, where do I even begin. This review is for the pho and Cajun deli inside this supermarket and not really for the supermarket. As for the supermarket, I think it is a decent place to shop for Asian food as the store is huge and stocked up with great choices. The smell though at the meat and seafood section is a little funky. Now the deli is awful. We ordered the pho and crawfish boil. Pho is okay. Portion is huge for the price but I think you will be far happier with MT Noodles nearby. The crawfish boil is probably the worse food I ever had in the Twin Cities. The sauce made me gagged. I seriously don't know what that sauce was except it was gross and tasted a little like puke. The crawfish is from a frozen bag. The flesh was gross and awful tasting. I was so turned off, I walked right out the store and gave them my two cents when I paid for the bill. By the way, this was not my first visit. I was there before but didn't get to dine because the deli closed early.
