The haircut wasn't what I asked for, but I asked for it and it'll grow out. My issue is with the receptionist who insisted my payment did not go through and that what I showed her had been deducted from my bank account was pending and would be put back in my account. This is the point where she should have gotten the manager, but she must have been listening to a great song on her AirPods and couldn't go get the manager who was standing a few feet behind her. So now I've paid for two haircuts and only got one. This is surprising because the manager, Ice, promised me she we call me at the end of the day yesterday and everything would be resolved. It's the next day and I was correct to not believe Ice's empty promise. As I told the staff who looked bored with me, this economy is terrible and I budgeted for this and that second haircut I paid for was money I needed for something else. The staff at this Dramatics location knows better than I do and I really didn't need groceries yesterday. read more

Wow. I learned a lesson about coming here. I had my hair done elsewhere with a crochet/extension install - but the hair was too long and needed to be thinned out. I didn't need a full wash/color/blow dry and cut - I just wanted a cut to give the style some shape. I've been in the same position before and normally go to Great Clips or Super Cuts, but I was going to be in the area anyway, so I decided to go to Dramatics. I walk in and my stylist greets me, no sooner than I sit down and take my hair down from my ponytail, I see her literally recoil once she realizes it's an extension. She tells me she doesn't feel comfortable working with extensions and brings her colleague over, who tells me that they don't feel "equipped" and don't want to touch it for "legal reasons". I felt like there was some coded language in there, but I'll leave it at that. I tried to explain that I just wanted someone to trim the hair shorter and thin it out a bit - regardless of whether it's real or fake, I'd assume a HAIR SALON could take care of it. I'm really disappointed in this experience and will be avoiding Dramatics moving forward. read more

The moment I made an appointment the entire process felt weird and off, being told the place was closing at 7 ( Apple Maps says 8) and asking the length of my hair. My hair is just pass my shoulders by less than inch and the hairdresser made a comment making me feel like I was a nuisance coming in. She was also running late from a previous client, so to rush me and still not be done was just weird. And then paying 54 dollars because apparently anything below shoulders/shoulder length is 50 instead of the 40 they advertised online because no one in their right mind would consider my hair long. Since my first haircut here (when I wrote the original review), I've returned a number of times with different stylists, as I care more about getting an appointment at the time most convenient to me than the stylist. Huge mistake! The stylists range from excellent (like the woman I had when I wrote this original review) to terrible. The stylist I most recently had both upcharged me and cut my hair much longer than I wanted. The next time I need a haircut, unless one very specific stylist is available at the time I need, I won't be returning here. I do want to say, though, that the receptionists and hair washers have been uniformly professional and good at their jobs every time I've come here. read more

I'm sad to write this review so I've put it off for months in hopes that I'd have a better experience, but no such luck! I'd been going to the Dramatics on 34th for several years and had great experiences, so I was excited to find that there was another location right across from my new apartment when I moved last year. Unfortunately not all locations are created equal! I've been in several times, for a few bang trims and one cut. I always walk in as it's much cheaper that way and I don't particularly mind which stylist I get. However each time I've been in I am never greeted by anyone, and have to go out of my way to make my presence known. Weird. The bang trims were fine but hoo boy the stylist who did my cut did NOT know what to do with wavy hair. The cut itself was fine (thank god), but after washing my hair she proceeded to rip a brush through it and got visibly frustrated when she inevitably hit tangles. She even asked "How do you brush your hair??" Well ma'am I comb through it when it's wet & has conditioner in it. Like you're supposed to with wavy/curly hair. It's the closest I've ever come to taking the brush from a stylist and doing it myself. She eventually gave up and just went ahead & did the cut. When I got home I had to detangle it myself and lost a chunk of hair from where she'd tried to yank the brush through. I decided to give them one more try last week and walked in on a Sunday afternoon. I was told to come back later in the day when they had availability. No problem, I live across the street! When I came back at the requested time I was told it was no longer available as someone else had booked. I get that with a walk-in you're rolling the dice, but it seems like if you give someone a specific time to come back, you should reserve that time for them. No such luck. Fortunately for me there are four other salons in a 1-block radius so I walked in elsewhere and was given a great cut. I won't be back to Dramatics, at least not this location. read more

I've been doing my own color during Covid to save money and reduce exposure, but I was going to Dragon Con and wanted to look amazing so I saved up and made an appointment. Turbo completely took care of me. My roots were ridiculous, my box dyed ends were hardcore, and he gave me no shame for doing stuff at home but instead worked his magic while being friendly and conversational and kind. The whole process took almost 4 hours (bleach, dye, cut) due to the state of my hair, but he was never impatient and didn't mind staying so late. My actual rating would be a 4.5. I've gone here several times for highlights, and I usually see Ice. She's amazing; she is great with blondes. I feel like she listens to what I want, puts her spin on it and my hair always ends up looking beautiful. She doesn't try to upsell me on things I don't need (ie: if I only need partial highlights, she won't try to persuade me to get a full, or half). On my last visit, Moshe did my hair, and I was a little worried because 1) I'm used to Ice 2) someone on here wrote a horrible review for him. I saw him anyway bc I was looking like trailer trash w my roots coming out and have a hectic schedule. He was also amazing. He was very detail oriented and made suggestions, but not in a pushy way. He gave me good advice on how to keep my hair looking blonde, and I was really satisfied with the outcome and the price. I really only wrote this review bc the bad review written on here probably discourages people from booking with him. If you're a blonde, or want to be blonde, I'd highly recommend either Ice or Moshe. Will definitely return. read more

Asia did a very thorough job coloring my hair and the cut was perfect. Both she and the shampoo person (did not get their name) worked hard to get any excess dye off my skin so I would be presentable for the rest of the day. My one complaint is that when I mentioned that I did not want my hair blown dry or styled after my cut, Asia mentioned that she would notify the receptionist so that I would not be charged for a service I did not receive. When I went up to pay, my bill was a lot more than I was expecting it to be, which makes me think that I was charged for a blow-dry I had chosen not to receive. My receipt was not itemized so I have no way of telling where I was over charged. read more

I walk by Dramatics every day on my way to work and given the location on 57th street, I figured it would be more than I was looking to pay for a simple haircut and blow dry. After 8 months without a cut, I was anxious to get a fresh cut and looked up Dramatics..and I am so glad I did! When I called to make the appt, I said I was hoping for a stylist who could cut my long straight hair and transform it into a shoulder length lob. I walked in and was warmly greeted by Shine. She has worked there since 1997 so I knew I would be in good hands. After a fabulous shampoo, Shine worked her magic to give me exactly what I was looking for. I've been coming to Dramatics on 57th to see Turbo to get my balayage after months in quarantine and a much needed color and cut! He did a fantastic job to reverse the color-hack job that was done during quarantine and continues to make my hair beautiful with color and cut upkeep since. The salon feels safe and clean, providing ample space, dividers and masks as needed (if yours gets wet or lose from the services). Horrible horrible service post covid reopening. I had made an appointment days in advance for a mens haircut. Showed up on time and was asked to wait outside and my hairdresser would come get me shortly. After making me wait for 10 mins, the receptionist comes out to inform me that someone will come get me in 5 more mins to wash my hair. 5 mins later the hairdresser comes out and tells me that she needs 30-45 mins more since the previous client requested additional services and she didnt want to disappoint her since she was an "older lady". So they considered it ok for them to waste an hour of my time making me wait for my appointment that i was on time for, rather than stop their previous client from ordering more services because they had make a reservation for something else and then decided to add on more services last minute and go over their allocated appointment time slot! To top it off, they were the least bit apologetic and offered no remediation for wasting my time. If the situation was reversed and i was an hour late to my appointment i would have been charged $25!!! Horrible customer service and regard for time. Avoid at all costs. read more

I was eager to get a haircut when I walked into Dramatics yet was debating between two styles a bit. My stylist, Turbo, really helped me decide what was realistic for me considering my previous cut so helped by giving me his opinion but definitely listened to mine also. He was friendly and we had good conversation while I was getting my hair cut but he also was very focused and guided me through the process as we spoke. I ended up with a haircut and had a general experience better than I expected. Everybody working there had a great attitude and I would definitely go back. I walked in with quarantine hair. I was very embarrassed and really didn't expect much since other salons truly made me believe it's a waste to go in with high hopes. I sat with Moshe the Magician. What amazed me was that he actually offered me a consultation and really worked with my face shape and we both envisioned something together. I felt so at ease and left it all to him. When he was done I nearly cried at how beautiful I looked. I got beautiful baby blonde blended into my very dark black virgin hair. The staff are very friendly here and watching other clients it was obvious that they all had great experience and knew what they were doing. I went in for just Balayage and was instead given full root to tip highlights. The color is great, but the style is not what I explained or like the photo I showed... it will definitely require upkeep and consistent coloring to maintain, which completely defeats the purpose of what I was aiming for. I was also told that a gloss is required for Balayage treatments, which tacks on another $50, making just the entire bill $160. A bit misleading from what your price sheet advertises. I honestly cannot tell a difference with what the gloss did or didn't do. Finally, the 20% promo for new customers advertised on yelp isn't valid. As I was checking out, they simply said they don't accept yelp anymore. Good to know after the fact and without warning. Overall, I like my hair, but it's not what I wanted. I'm disappointed that I'll have to pay more money in a few months to correct it so that I can eventually get what I wanted. The price was still reasonable for NYC and I liked that the stylist explained pricing to me upfront. I may go back, but as much as I liked my stylist personally, I will likely request someone different who can assure me that I'll be getting what I paid for. read more

I walked into the salon with a fairly clear view of what I wanted, my hair was platinum and I had planned on just getting my roots done. Once I got in the chair and Turbo and I got to talking, he encouraged me to dye my hair copper (which I had been thinking of doing for a whoand oh my god am I so glad I did. I would trust my life in Turbo's hands. He talked me through the entire process from beginning to end and was super realistic with what my end results may be. Love, love, love Melody at Dramatics on 57th. She's truly one of the best hair stylists and colorists in the city and meticulous to deliver the perfect shade of blonde for my highlights. The salon recently reopened and couldn't feel like a safer environment. They check your temperature when you arrive, everyone is of course in masks, they've arranged the salon so that everyone is properly social distanced, and have even provided plastic partitions between stations as an extra precaution. HELP!! If you need a good wavy bob haircut DO NOT USE SASSY! She claims to know and then cuts so terribly that it will take months for the odd layers to grow out. I can't believe how awful this is. From now on, Im asking where the stylist learned how to cut layers in wavy hair. The salon itself is somewhat low-end but friendly. I would have sacrificed for a good haircut. The one star is for the assistants/shampoo girls, who were very sweet and personable. Everything else? Zero, and a big, fat "Yikes." I went in to get my hair colored by Stretch, who I thought I could trust since he cut my hair in the past. I was sadly mistaken. I wanted to lift my hair to a rose gold/blush blonde color. I can prepared with plenty of pictures, and Stretch sounded confident that he could give me what I wanted. What I got was far from it-- "rose gold" somehow became "hot pink roots, orange stripe in the middle, and pastel pink tips." What?! My hair was a disaster, but everyone there INSISTED it looked good. I was clearly unhappy, but that was brushed off, and I was forced to overpay anyway. 260$ to walk out of there looking like a joke. Not to mention, I was in pain the entire time. Now, I have a very sensitive scalp, and I know sometimes bleach itches or burns, but the sensation I felt there was unlike anything I've ever felt before. It was like my scalp was being melted off. I told him several times, but he insisted my scalp "looked fine" and that I'd just have to deal. It was most certainly not fine. I awoke the next morning to find burns all over my scalp, some even still dripping blood. It still hurts two days later. My advice is to avoid this place like the plague, and believe the horror stories you read on Yelp. UPDATE: a manager DID contact me immediately after I posted a negative review, go figure, but instead of offering my a refund for wasted money on my destroyed hair, simply offered a conditioning treatment and some product. Going back after this experience, especially after I swore to never let anyone here touch my hair again, would have just been a waste of time. Stretch did check my scalp, but does that really count as concern? As I stated earlier, he said each time that it looked fine. I'm still suffering from damage from those burns and blisters over a month later. Also, take a look at the pictures I posted.
