We decide to walk over kind of early-ish, arriving before 5pm (on a Saturday), and was surprised to see that it was busy, busy, busy, chock full of many, many jovial patrons, enjoying the libations and a band playing "classic rock" covers. They were good, no doubt keeping the increasingly jovial patrons at the bar suitably entertained. As for Hubby and me, we parked it at a table inside, people-watching as we endured our 30-minute wait. That kept Your Host suitably entertained. So, let's get into some of the deets, shall we? ATMOSPHERE: it's a bar with live entertainment (typically bands), so it's not quiet. It's popular with beachgoers who will typically hang out for drinks and/or bites after enjoying the beach. There's a fun, energetic vibe here and families will have their littles in tow. I imagine there is a cut-off time for the under-21 set but one might say that The Columns accommodates families. Saturday late-afternoon/early evenings are busy and take heed darlings that you will be waiting at least 30 minutes for a table. FARE: typical American bar food. Seafood is a thing here and they have a raw bar. The lunch offerings (mostly sandwiches) end promptly at 4pm and switches to their dinner menu, which are mostly plates. Food is okay...both Hubby and I had crab cakes, which were pretty tasty. SERVICE: attentive but not annoyingly so. Our server was a lovely woman, and food came out on the quick. Now, darlings, I now have to throw a little caution to the wind... There are no free refills on soft drinks and at $4 a pop, that can certainly add up. This is Your Host's biggest peeve with The Columns but gets around that with an adult bev. The other vexation is that they charge an extra 3% on credit card but debit cards are exempt from the surcharge...so that's nice (I guess). Well, I was finally able to check it out recently with a friend, and we both immediately fell in love with the place. The bar was at the end of a long parking lot and offered several different areas. There was a tented space with picnic tables, a sand-covered lagoon with couches and firepits, a pier with loads of dining tables, a small space for their frequent live music, a giant bar, and many other lounge chairs scattered about. The bar offered a variety of beers, wines, cocktails, and even mocktails. My Aperol Spritz was robust and well-balanced. We also ordered food from Cuts & Catch, which was a food truck and grill near the entrance to the bar. Their menu supposedly changes often, but they focus on both surf and turf items. When we arrived around 7:30 pm on a Saturday evening, a majority of the menu was already sold out. In some ways, that helped ease the selection process, but it also meant that a few of the things that had appealed to us (chicken kebabs, for instance) were no longer an option. We each ended up getting an order of the Fried Fish Tacos and shared a Shrimp Cocktail. The tacos were served in portions of three. The small corn tortillas were wrapped around large pieces of crispy, flaky fish tenders and a cabbage slaw. We both thought they looked basic, but they tasted phenomenal! The raw bar dish included five jumbo shrimp with a side of cocktail sauce. The shellfish were plumb and very fresh. We were still a bit hungry after these items, especially since we had spent the day at the beach, so we also shared an order of fries for the ride home; the thin, crisp fries were perfectly salted and simply delicious. The live music and views of the sunsetting over the marina made for a lovely atmosphere, and the excellent food and drinks made the experience that much better. We cannot wait to return!

The restaurant was located in a multi-floor home on Wesley Lake, just around the corner from the hustle and bustle of Cookman Avenue. The first floor was more of a bar and lounge, and they had a live jazz band on the evening we visited. We checked in with the hostess and were escorted up to the second floor dining room, which was a charming spot that was breezy and comfortable, yet refined. The floor also had its own bar. Our server was on top of things, but was also clearly newer to the place. Regardless, once we got settled, she took our drink orders, which had taken us some time to decide on since the menu was creative and vast. I went with A Sidecar Named Desire, which included Courvoisier VSOP, Cointreau, Chinola passionfruit liqueur, and fresh lemon juice. I adore passion fruit and had always liked sidecars as well, so I figured it was worth a try, and I loved it! It had a good balance of tart sweetness and smokiness. My friend similarly enjoyed her spicy margarita, and we both imbibed while picking on some bread and herb butter. For our meal, we decided to start by sharing the Greek Salad, which was a massive bowl of romaine topped with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, red onions, and Kalamata olives. We left off the feta cheese, but enjoyed the seasoned dressing made of red wine vinegar, honey, salt, oregano, and olive oil. It was a fresh and flavorful mix of vegetables that was a pleasure to eat. The entree options were endless and offered something for everyone. I wound up going with the Chilean Sea Bass, which was served over sweet onions and potatoes in a tomato herb reduction. The fish was tender and perfectly cooked. It was a light and tasty dish that seemed perfect for the Spring season. After our meals we were a bit too full for dessert, but we decided to get a second round of drinks, mainly because I was dying to try their Pistachio Espresso-Tini. Wow, was that drink delicious! It blended Ketel One Vodka, Mozart White Chocolate Liqueur, natural pistachio flavor, and fresh espresso. The coffee notes were not super prevalent, but the creaminess, nuttiness was the real highlight. It was a decadent way to end a delicious meal. After we settled the bill and headed downstairs, I noticed several bowls of after-dinner mints, which were a nice touch. From the relaxed atmosphere to the interesting and expansive menu, Moonstruck was a terrific option for our Asbury dinner experience.

The food itself had good flavor, but it arrived cold, like it was not served right away, which was disappointing. To end the meal, we ordered a cappuccino, but it was so poorly made that it tasted like nothing but warm milk. It was completely undrinkable. What makes this especially disappointing is that I've always loved Moonstruck. It's been one of my favorite restaurants because of its excellent food and outstanding service. If this is the level of service the new owners are willing to accept, I worry about the restaurant's future. I truly hope management addresses these issues because Moonstruck has always been top notch!
