Out of all the car rental services I have used, I like Getaround the best for short trips (less…read morethan 1 day). I've used Turo, traditional car rental companies (Hertz, Enterprise, etc.), and Zipcar. I think Truo and traditional rental companies are built more for longer term rentals and Zipcar is the most comparable. The hourly rates for Getaround are fairly reasonable, much better than Zipcar, plus Getaround doesn't charge a monthly fee. However, there is a reason why Zipcar is so expensive: the cars are owned and maintained by the company instead of ordinary people. With Getaround, you're renting out other people's cars and so the company doesn't have full control over the vehicle. It is possible that you may book a car that looks pretty good in the listing but when you get it, it's kind of dirty or not what you expected because the owner doesn't clean/maintain it. That is not necessarily Getaround's fault. For me, I've accepted that this may happen (and it has before), but for the money I save by not using Zipcar, it's fine by me. I have used Getaround so much that I know which cars in my area are clean and well-maintained and I tend to stick to those. If you're not willing to take the risk that a car might not be in perfect condition, then I'd say you should be willing to pay a premium for that. I've had maybe 2 interactions with customer service and both have been very good. I once got automatically charged a lot for gas because the car is parked on a slope and that affected the fuel level recorded after I dropped the car back. I only drove 5 miles in a 22mpg car, but the fuel level recordings made it seem like I used nearly 10% of the gas. I got my money back after explaining to CS via email. Another time I dropped off the car and then when I got to my apartment 2 blocks away I realized I left something in the car. I was able to call a customer service rep via the app and they waited on the phone as I walked back to the car and helped me unlock the car to get the item and lock it back up. Based on all of my Getaround experiences so far I'd definitely recommend it if you're a fairly flexible person with realistic expectations.

Crap cars and absolutely NO way to retrieve or contact the owner after you lock the car if you left…read morean item. They should at least provide you 1hr in case you did leave an item. INSTEAD their customer service (which is really non-existent) tells you--you need to rent the same car again for an hour--in the hopes your item may still be there..., SERIOUSLY. What BS. NEVER AGAIN.

Back in May, my wife and I were to begin our long awaited Route 66 trip. Our fear was that we…read morewould get an older model car and that we would be more worried about the car than seeing all the sights along the way. To alleviate that fear we went to this Budget office the day before, to see if there was any way of securing a newer model car. The rep at the desk said that he could not guarantee what cars he would have the next day, which sounded reasonable. So we came back the next day with our fingers crossed. The rep we spoke to the day before wasn't there, but the rep asked us, " are you the ones doing the Route 66 trip" ? We said, yes we are. " Well, I have a note here to save the brand new Toyota Camry Hybrid for you." Needless to say we were more than pleased. It made our Route 66 trip even more enjoyable. Promised myself I would write this review when we got back. Although this is late, that does not diminish what appreciation we have for that rep that worked on that Wednesday. Thank you sir.

Avis is unjustly using its power as a $5 billion company to over bill me. I rented an SUV in Costa…read moreRica and the car was displaying errors soon after rental. I bought the extra auto insurance through Avis which cost 3X more than the car itself. Ultimately the car broke down in a rural, high elevation area (far from any body of water) and left me and my family stranded. Rather than accepting that the car had an issue or that the Avis insurance should be applied, they are billing me $6000 for the breakdown and claim I drove the car through a large body of water which is not at all true. Without an insurance company to represent me (Avis controlled the insurance), it is just me, a formerly loyal customer against this international company. Avis is using its power to pressure my credit card to bill me. Rather than doing the right thing and work with their insurance company or the car manufacturer, they have disempowered me and are coming after me as an individual. This is an unfair fight, and Avis is a bully.

My vehicle was 1/4 full when I picked up in garage. Called front desk : they said ok return with 1/4. I took pic of gas gauge. Brought car back and two days later got bill for $120 fill up. I looked at their reviews: my, my over a dozen complaints similar to mine about less than full tank at pick up just in last 6 mos !. Now i'm trying to get reimbursed. Also am considering a police report. They are running a little petty criminal game here, I suspect

We rent a car for a month in Hertz(Downtown Chicago). In 2.5weeks time, car won't start, the theft sign is on. Calling the company, car report returned and then stolen. Going through with the rep, that finally (after many 2hours on the line)reactivates the car. Next day my husband takes my son to his hockey training to the ice rink. Going out from the game,car-gone! Calling police, filing the case, the police officer calls Hertz and... THEY Don't EVEN SHARE the car's GPS... Turns out,the car is still filed "missing" in Hertz system, since nobody cared to changed the status. We have over 250$ expenses on Uber thanks to all this. Next thing after 3days they give us other car and inform us that the 1 st car(that was towed by Hertz) is in the airport. They suggest we file lost and found for our belongings, that THEY took. The month has passed,no sign of our stuff. Constantly with the customers service.Every time I call ,nobody has a clue of the situation, even though the reference number and case number provided. Finally when I tell them ,that we'll have to take legal actions against them, they say:"U go ahead"

However, they gave it to us with an empty tank (because their gas pump was "broken"), and while we were able to return it empty it's very inconvenient to have to fill up first thing (especially in Chicago during rush hour). We probably returned it with 2-3 gallons more than it had when we picked it up because who really likes to drive around on an empty tank? 2 stars for the service. The office is tiny, hot and smelled like vomit when we returned the car. The man who checked the car out spoke quickly mumbled and everything under his breath, so we couldn't understand him AT ALL. The man who was there when we returned the car acted like a robot and like his personality had been beaten out of him. It also sucks big time to have to pay an extra $100+ to have another driver on the account, when it costs them NOTHING. I know that's a Hertz-wide issue and not specific to this location, but it's enough to have us look for another car company next time that doesn't charge so much for a second driver.
