We had no idea what to expect when we purchased tickets. We brought 5 friends with us and every single one of us loved the show! All of the actors were phenomenal in the occasional Shakespearean monologues, combined with current day references and innuendos. I was originally sad that my 14 year old couldn't attend but after seeing the performance, agreed this wasn't the show for her. Perhaps an occasional family-friendly matinee might be a possibility in the future? All in all, everyone loved this experience and I hope to return for more shows! The only thing preventing 5 stars is that drinks were ordered and forgotten. However, after leaving the show to visit the bar to remind them, they were brought out immediately. read more

We attempted to see this show tonight. There is absolutely NO signage for the venue. We asked 4 different people from other shops at the mall and no one knew where it was. Laughed for about 2 hours straight. Unique, hilarious, intimate, and worth much more than the price of admission. In an almost-hidden entrance on the side of a hotel, a small library hosts this troupe of actors. The entire venue holds approximately 50 people. Every seat is amazing, and they hold a live auction for a seating upgrade that comes with a bit of Acting and Directorial perks over the flow of the night. This so-called play was billed by Goldstar as a Shakespearean play during which one of the actors is drunk and fumbles their lines, making the play very interesting and humorous. We discovered that the description bybGoldstar was anything but what we found in actuality. The proceedings were inane with bizarre antics and screaming on the part of four actors with very little Shakespearean content whatsoever. There was NO play to speak of. I applaud Drunk Shakespeare. I was in Phoenix for work. I took a look at what was happening at night. This was listed. I was intrigued. Than I noticed the venue was directly across the street from my hotel. That could not be more convenient. I recommend it. You do not need to have any great knowledge of the Bard. You probably need more interest in the first word of the title, not the second word. Five 20 somethings put on an abbreviated version of Macbeth. The gimmick is at the beginning they bring out a tray of five shots of hard liquor. They select an audience member -- they interact extensively with the crowd, not just the front row which is so close they could touch -- to down one of those to verify it is what it purports to be. Then one of them finishes off the four in short order. That renders the person inebriated. (There are additional opportunities for a designated king and queen, who win the auction bidding, to require that same performer take two further shots, and six ounces of tequila would put most people under the table.) The ninety minute show is a comic meta rendition of the Scottish tragedy. They break the fourth wall regularly. Some appears improvised (well). They draft volunteers, e.g., to be the two murderers. If everyone were sober, this would be mildly amusing. Since all of the persons in the space, which is tiny (the stage is the size of a New York City apartment kitchen), are encouraged to enjoy the Elizabethan themed libations, I am confident the entertainment value is enhanced considerably. If you have seen MacHomer, the one man mash up of this script with the Simpsons animated TV show, this program is in the same spirit. The people next to me were a young couple, probably a demographic similar to the actors. They had been before. They brought another couple. They actually paid for their friends to be the king and the queen. That couple then was able to sit in the dual throne chairs. In addition to a bottle of champagne, the package included slightly more participation in the festivities. It is bawdy but not explicit. You could bring coworkers (there is an age requirement, 21 and up). One sequence involves a little radio controlled truck. Audience members receive colored ping pong balls. A cast member drives the truck around. You try to throw balls into the truck bed. For every ball that lands, the drunk cast member removes an article of clothing. The maximum number of balls you could get in there is seven. So the drunk cast member strips down to underwear. That guy was much more buff than I would have guessed. But he had on his Sponge Bob Square Pants boxers. I am a Shakespeare completist (that includes Timon, Pericles, Two Noble Kinsman, even Edward III; not counting Double Falsehood as even disputed). That only makes me an enthusiast, not an expert, I hasten to add for the benefit of those such as a colleague who scoffs at any statement I might make about theatre. This experience cannot be ranked against others. It is unique. Addendum. The Rose Theatre is not the easiest to find based on a navigation app, because it is part of a complex. What a fun and unique experience! It all begins with being able to actually FIND the location ( this will likely be easier for some than others, like us (me) ). In retrospect the location IS given, in a general manner. ANYWAY: on to more important matters. Drunk Shakespeare is a set in a small, intimate venue that guarantees great integration with the cast and a really immersive experience. One actor is selected each performance to ingest about 5 or 6 shots (usually whiskey) while the cast performs a generally free form work of Shakespeare (Macbeth, in this case). As the play moves along the alcohol of course makes for more than a little mayhem as improvisation and off the cuff asides ensue. Audience participation is encouraged and, indeed, "required" if you're seated in the front row. And how could you not? You have likely enjoyed a cocktail or two yourself (there is a full bar to order from). You can't help but be involved in some way if you should be called upon and everyone who was, myself included, enjoyed themselves. The vibe is lively, raucous and bawdy. The actors are amazing and obviously mesh well with each other and the audience. I feel I'm doing a disservice to this review as words really fail to describe the experience. Suffice to say it is definitely something that should be on your list of things to do. I know we will be back again. Great stuff. read more

Oh my goodness, this was so hysterical! I read other reviews and agree folks who don't like language and innuendos, this may not be for you. But 21 and over show that a performer gets drunk? I'd be disappointed if it wasn't vulgar. We laughed so hard and were thankful we saw the show. We had two friends who would not enjoy a regular Shakespearean play...they loved it too! We went here on my birthday as I kept seeing this ad in my Facebook feed and it looked funny. I also read the reviews and people were saying it was hilarious. If you go, you need to go early as it took us a while to find the place. Finally we saw a tiny sign outside of the Bank of America building. So we drove around the block to find the parking garage. Once out of there you have to figure out where to go as there are no signs leading you. We just kept walking through what was kinda a little shopping area and trying to find our way up to the street where we saw the sign. Finally I saw the Bank of America sign and as we rounded the corner a guy was there asking if we were looking for Drunk Shakespeare and led us in the right direction. Once inside it was a tiny little place. Hint, don't pay for the higher price tickets as those are on the bottom and your view gets blocked by the actors. This is one time I had wished my husband had cheaped our and the lowest price tickets at the top. There were only 3 rows of seats on each side of the room. 4 sides. I felt like I was actually sitting in a school gymnasium except a lot smaller. I thought the show was ok, nothing spectacular or even hilarious. There were a few parts I laughed out loud at. It seemed as though there really wasn't any scripted parts it was just random things being said as if they were making it up as they went along. The guy next to me was laughing extremely loud and At everything, he was kinda annoying and drunk himself so maybe that's why he was laughing so hard. This was a lot of fun! The 21+ age limit is strictly enforced, as it should be, between the drinking, language and some adult themes. I was initially a little apprehensive as I am not a huge Shakespeare fan. And I am not a big drinker. But neither fact proved to detract from my enjoyment. I won't go so far as to say the actual Macbeth performance was an afterthought, but there were enough other interruptions, distractions, and moments where hilarity ensued that it never dragged. Lots of improv, great audience interaction and a pretty amazing saxophone performance by our designated drunk actor. My only suggestion is that cushions on the wood bench seating would be a nice touch. I know they are trying to recreate an Elizabethan England atmosphere, but the audience has 21st century American rear ends. Definitely worth a night out! read more
