I can't say I've ever paid much attention to my shoes, other than my running shoes, which I've always bought at JackRabbit in Morristown (I think the store has been re-named "FleetFleet"). A few exceptions to that rule come to mind: Decades ago, when I was going to meet my birth mother for the 1st time, I wanted a good pair of black shoes. I went to the Bridgewater Commons Mall (across the street from where DSW is now) and went to a store that seemed sufficiently high-end, although the name of it escapes me now. I spent a lot of money on a pair of black shoes, and I guess the impression I made was positive, although I don't remember that the shoes themselves lasted very long, despite the high price. Or that they were all that comfortable. Another time, I was going on a job interview, and I needed a good pair of black shoes. I remembered going to the Woodbury Commons Mall in upstate NY when I was going on a 1st date and wanted some good shirts. My old friend swore by Woodbury Commons, and we went up at night, just before closing time, and I got some decent shirts for not a lot of money. The romance didn't last too long, but I still have the shirts. So, remembering that, I went up to Woodbury on a Sunday afternoon (minus my old friend) to buy some shoes. Big mistake! The parking lot was a migraine-inducing nightmare (I actually did leave the mall that day with a migraine), and the shoe store was utter chaos, with no salesclerk in sight, and what seemed to be a rabid, riotous mob grabbing up shoes indiscriminately. Basically, you were on your own. I bought a pair of ill-fitting shoes (I guess the days where a salesclerk measures the size of your foot with that big metal device are long gone...they definitely are at Woodbury Commons, in any event!) that caused my feet real discomfort for a year or 2 and then disintegrated. (PS- I didn't get the job.) DSW? My old friend swears by them and comes often to browse through row after row of shoes. Often, I'll accompany him, bored out of my mind, although when a Borders existed on this same location, and I used to work in nearby Piscataway, I'd come here often on my lunch hour to browse through books and CDs. So, this huge, cavernous warehouse does bring back some bittersweet memories. I came for myself once, when I needed to buy...you guessed it...black shoes. I don't remember that there was a lot of sales help available, but I did find a pair in my size that looked acceptable. The price didn't seem all that cheap to me, but then I'm not really up on what the market will bear when it comes to black shoes. When I went up to the counter to purchase the shoes, the guy ringing me up was pretty aggressive about me giving him my email address. He didn't get it, but it left an unpleasant aftertaste (although I've gone through the same thing at virtually any Barnes & Noble bookstore I've patronized). The shoes were ok, but...once again...they didn't last all that long. A few years ago, at my current job, I had to once again purchase a pair of black shoes. At that point, I went onto the Amazon website, put in my shoe size, and bought a pair of cheap black shoes, leaving it up to chance whether they would be any better or any worse than any other pair of black shoes I've bought over the past few decades. They arrived quickly at my doorstep, they were actually pretty comfortable and fit well, and I'm still wearing them, several years later. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean worse. Which also doesn't necessarily mean I've sworn off DSW if an emergency occurs, or I've been locked out of Amazon for some reason. Amazon worked for me at least once when it comes to shoes, but I can't really say buying shoes on the website is the smartest or most economical way to go about it. Seems a better idea is to actually hold the shoes in your hands and then try them on and walk around the carpet a bit before you purchase them. And DSW does have row after row of shoes, from the front area where Borders used to display their "sale" books, to the back, where I used to purchase DVD's and CD's back in the day. DSW has never been very crowded when I've been there, which is a relief, especially when I recall the ravening hordes at the Woodbury Commons. My old friend swears by DSW and their prices (although I have to say-- some call my old friend a cheapskate; the more magnanimous might call him frugal, a wary consumer with a limited budget seeking a bargain). As for me? Let me put it this way-- I'd definitely come here before braving again the nightmarish maelstrom of some crowded outlet like Woodbury Commons. But Amazon might still be my first choice. read more

Every once and awhile, I will find something that I like here. It's become more infrequent, however, as most of the styles they carry are just not for me. When I am in need of a new pair of shoes and don't have a lot of time, I always come to DSW first in hopes that there will be at least one shoe (and its pair), that will save me from having to run to countless other shoe stores. The aisles are usually very clean, the sizes are usually in order, and the styles are easy to identify as they are generally grouped together. The highest heels are in the first row lining the wall, and you can work your way down to the flats. Then boots. (Then Mens). Clearance is to the far back and accessories are to the front of the store. The staff is always friendly and helpful yet no one bothers you while you're shopping, so I can't give DSW less than 3 stars. It's not their fault that I can't ever find shoes that are meant for me. This was a pretty decent store. The layout of the store was good as it was actually very easy to navigate. This location has everything else that the other locations have of course. Although I like DSW, I have to be honest, nothing really caught my eye in the store. DSW carries just about all sorts of shoes for men women and children, I just didn't see anything that I liked. Prices are moderate and there is always a clearance rack in the back. This store was ok, nothing spectacular, however I would go back if I'm in the area. I do like DSW, despite I prefer stores with a more variety of products. However, I was very impressed with this location. I found lots of shoes I liked, and the organization was perfect, as all the shoes were stacked on top of each other. No boxes were broken, and the boxes were not tilted either as if they were about to fall off. This is the first time I've been inside a DSW as there were no crooked boxes. The deals were amazing as well! I lose it a star because the ambiance is too dark, and it makes sort of an unwelcoming feel. However, I think this is one of the best DSWs I've been in. read more

I have been looking for a good store for affordable (discount priced) shoes for a while now. I used to shop at Marty's - but they went out of business - or at least most of the stores closed. I need dress shoes for work so the casual styles found many places did not help. I found this store today when my wife wanted to shop in TJ Max which is in the same shopping center. This is a great store for shoes at affordable prices. The place is almost as big as a supermarket - aisles and aisles. The men's shoe selection is impressive. I found a Steve Madden slip-on discounted to $69.99. Got a pair in black and a pair in brown. Looks good, just a bit of decorative trim, seems to fit well. Plus I picked up two pair of boat shoes at $41.06 in the clearance section. Boat shoes make good slippers for around the house. Floor service is fine. One gal asked me if I needed assistance - "no, thanks I found some shoes already". A guy saw me walking to the front with four shoe boxes and offered to put them behind the check-out for me - "thanks". The check-out clerk was very nice, got me signed up for the rewards program - saved me $10.00 off my purchase. Absolutely recommend this store. Worth a drive. While you are in the area stop by Somerville - it's a good restaurant town. read more

Summary: Good Prices, Okay Service DSW, located in the Best Buy plaza directly across from the Commons Mall, is a good place to go to avoid the hustle and bustle of the mall, with a selection to boot! (no pun intended) From children's footwear all the way up to adults, chances are that they've got something to suit your needs (and wallet). My only gripe comes with the sales reps, who are rather uninterested and don't really seem to care about helping you get what you want, but then again, this may have just been a one-off experience. Don't come here with a stroller. If you can get past the heavy, double doors you'll have to open and hold without the help of a 21st century, you know, automatic door, you'll just be greeted with benches in the middle of every aisle rendering them impassable. read more

The place is big and selection is varied. Quality of some brands is iffy but the biggest complaint here is The check out. Lines are long because each person buying shoes is like they're buying a house. Not sure if it's the cashiers or their system but if you must buy shoes here, leave plenty of time. read more

It breaks my heart to see the former Borders Books location but this store does a great job of using the space well. The architecture inside is typical DSW with minimal decorations, standard furnishings & finishings & a very efficient layout that promotes easy shopping. The staff are widely very perky with their famed "Next shoe lover, please." mantra. The layout is generous thanks to the spaciousness which makes all other factors like ease of finding, navigation, taking a break by the front sunny windows, seeing where the bathroom is, etc. all much easier. The variety of items is the DSW maximum so you'll find a large socks & accessories section. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE!!! The prices are really good on their designer shoes. I wish they offered more in the mens athletic shoes ie) Jordan, or better looking Nike's The staff is amazing! They do a really good job especially with how busy it always looks. The store is clean too. I ran a retail store, and the hardest thing to do is keep it clean, especially the bathrooms which looked great. Met the store manager in my latest visit, nice and helpful as one should be! My husband loves this store and I don't. Every time we go to this store, he always finds a couple of pairs that fit him perfectly. I don't. Even though the selection of shoes is quite extensive, the quality of the shoes is just not there for me. I also do not find the staff helpful - that is if you even find a sales associate, of course. Most of the time there are so few sales associates in that huge place that finding one is a challenge. The staff is either disinterested in answering questions or, possibly, not trained well enough to be able to answer. read more
