This review is to give a shout-out to Ashley, the sales associate, for her superior customer service. When I arrived, I saw the line for order pickups on the 1st floor. Since the sale prices were still active, I decided to make some additional purchases. When it was my turn at the register, Ashley retrieved my online order from the back storage area. She verified my identity and completed the process. She also rang up the merch I chose while browsing the sales. Please note, there was a lot of customers, several registers were handling customer purchases. A man to the right of me came by to pickup an order for four items. Another sales associate couldn't find his order. Ashley said "it's in the storage area on the shelf to to right. Look on the bottom row, there is a note taped to his order." How in the world could she recall this specific order and know its exact location. Another customer to my left asked for a price check on two hats she was holding. Ashley to the rescue again! As she was looking up my account number, she used a hand-held device to scan the tag of the hats and tell the customer the price. She helped customers to the right and left of me while handling my transactions. I requested a gift receipt for some of the items and she quickly and efficiently placed those items in a separate bag with the receipts. I like shopping in person to choose or try on my purchases. I bought towels, pajamas, and sweaters. Occasionally, the online order works just as well and saves time. The quality of the goods and products at JC Penny's Department store is very good. Sure, in my case the shoes were purchased about four years ago, but they remained brand new, unused, and still in the original box. The process started with the store asking for my phone number so they could locate the purchase history. Without an account tied to a phone number, there was little they could do. Scanning the barcode on the shoe box wasn't enough. Even the Nordstrom Rack price tag wasn't enough. Eventually, they were able to look up the purchase and determine exactly how long ago the shoes had been bought. That's when I was told the purchase was approximately four years old and therefore could not be returned. I understood that a refund might be outside their policy, so I asked if store credit would be possible instead. The employee checked with the manager, but the answer came back as a firm no. What makes the situation even more frustrating is that these were classic Vans shoes--an item that has remained popular for years. In fact, some classic styles are worth as much as, or even more than, when they were originally purchased. From a customer's perspective, the shoes were still brand new, in their original packaging, and easily resellable. By comparison, other discount retailers such as Ross often seem more focused on the condition of the item than the exact age of the purchase. Whether or not that is their official policy, the experience feels less restrictive from a customer's point of view. In the end, it wasn't just about the shoes or the money. It was about flexibility and customer service. After locating the purchase, verifying the item, confirming it was new, and seeing that it still had its original tags and packaging, not even receiving store credit felt disappointing. What could have been a simple customer-service gesture instead became an experience that left me feeling let down--and perhaps left Nordstrom Rack losing a customer as well.
