Yelp does it again. I had purchased a 'salvaged' luxury vehicle and unfortunately that's why it's called 'salvaged'. Found Funk's on Yelp and brought it in and met Art and Ken who are both great. Art kept constant communication with me throughout the TWO weeks that this 'costly mistake' was kept in the shop and finally after hours of time and effort my car emerged from the serious 'operation' after it was practically dissected and sewn back together. Art was honest and upfront and worked with me re: this time consuming and costly repair but it was well worth it because the car really is a beautiful car and it rides smoothly and safely and that's the most important. I own an Audi A8L and only let Art and his crew work on my car. I do not even take it to the dealer as I absolutely trust Art will never cheat me or do anything that will compromise the integrity of my car. Both the prices and the service at Funks is top notch. I have never felt taken advantage of; and many times I have walked away thinking I got a great deal on top of great service. If Art does not know something or believes there is a better mechanic for the car you have (my girlfriends highly modified Miata), he will recommend you to the correct person instead of pretending to know it all. I spoke with the owner, who said he is working with his staff on ensure the estimate is provided ahead of time. When we took the car to McKevitt Volvo, they had increased the amount ot time to replace the cup holder lid, more than an hour over what was orignally estimated. For that reason I cannot blame Funk for their original estimate. We had the cupholder lid installed at Max Auto Repair in Berkeley for $50, it took them less than an hour. ============================================================== On a previous time (over a year ago) I took our Volvo in; they did a repair that surpassed 2000 without checking with us. This past week, Funk gave me a phone estimate for $570, when I came to pick up the car I was told the total was $630 because of taxes. However on the hardcopy estimate they had put $730, that amount was never communicated!! 2 weeks ago, I asked the dealer in San Leandro for a cup holder lid installation, they told me it would take 15 minutes (about $75); at Funks they were already installing the lid when I called even without an estimate, when I inquired for an estimate I was told it would take 1 hour and obviously at a much higher cost than the dealer's estimate. Why would I pay for the additional time due to their inexperience! When we got the car, it was dirty from being left outside, the paper mat was greasy but was left there for me to throw it away. We have decided not to bring our cars there ever again...... read more

When the radiator went on our '01 Lexus LS430 we had heard that Funk's was a good reliable place to get it fixed, thinking it would be considerably cheaper than going to a Lexus or Toyota dealer. It was very convenient to where my wife worked and a customer of her's had said she'd always had great service from them on her Lexus. After getting the radiator fixed for $1300, the engine light came on again so we took it back and they said the head gasket was blown and would need to be replaced. Seeing no other option and again thinking they'd be cheaper than a dealer, we gave them the go ahead at an estimated cost of $5000. After a week at their shop (and they don't have loaner vehicles), we ended up with a bill for $5400, higher than original estimate by almost 10%. This included paying for the replacement of the thermostat, gasket & coolant for the 2nd time. So we had now paid them $6700 in repairs. When we got it back, it just didn't sound right, so we took it back a couple more times before they had it adjusted to where it should be - and all seemed OK. A week later the check engine light came on again, but since we needed a shuttle (which Funk's doesn't provide) we took it to the Toyota dealer. Paying them a $150 diagnostic fee, they said the thermostat was faulty and needed replacing! They said to take it back to Funk's and have them replace the thermostat and refund the diagnostic fee. Funk's said they'd replace it for free (don't forget, we had already paid 2 times for a new thermostat), but wouldn't cover what we had paid Toyota. Our bill for repairs was now up to $6850. However, when we got it home after this 3rd repair the VSC light was on. A number of visits back to Funk's later (they were quite nice and their explanations of their issues determining the cause seemed reasonable) they said they were sure they had found the problem, a faulty diagnostic device which cost $800 to replace! And they weren't even 100% sure this was the cause. OK, because it was rare for this device to be an issue - it isn't even stocked by Lexus - I wanted to verify this so took it to the Toyota dealer. They fixed it for free by performing a simple reset. It didn't need a new part after all, saving us the $800+ Funk's was going to charge us - who knows how much labor would have added to this. What started out as a blown radiator turned into an 8 month saga (from April to Dec of this year) - and I'm no longer sure whether the blown head gasket wasn't a result of not fixing the radiator correctly the 1st time - wouldn't they have checked for leakage when they fixed the rad? So we will certainly not be going back there nor recommending them to anyone. read more

I brought my 2003 Range Rover in to have the front timing cover seals replaced, and a new water pump installed. I had done a lot of research, and had a long laundry list of things that often go wrong with the BMW engine in my Rover, mine was at 150k miles. I wanted everything done just for peace of mind. I told Art, keep the car I'm not in a rush, the car was there for about a month, and they worked on it between jobs. He charged me for the waterpump and timing cover seals, but did so much more (chain tensioner, 4 PCV hoses, oil separator, PCV plate, half a dozen o-ring seals, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets. There were so many little things that required extra hours, but he never billed me for them. Things like repairing stripped threads, or having to remove the intake manifold to replace the one hose that never gets replaced because it's a pain to get to. The amount of work they did would have cost me about $1000 extra from the dealer, they charge extra for every stripped bolt they have to fix. I also feel like the dealer wouldn't change the timing tensioner for free since the front cover is off, they would rather it fail a year later so they can charge you for a second round of tear down. I've been going to Funks for several years, he also did a timing belt and water pump on my Audi TT. Overall very happy with the work done. Best to call, emails take a couple days to get a response, that's my only gripe. read more

So, when I was trying to find a place to work on our different cars I was definitely cautious. You can probably just look at the ratings for Funk's and see right away these guys get it. If you take care of the customer, offer them sound advice, fair prices and care you will receive repeat business. Well, I did this with one of my vehicles, my 2003 BMW 330I last year when it was failing smog. They detailed the repair, the pricing, and seemed very fair. I back checked the work they discussed and the pricing was very competitive and was consistent with what they communicated. I have been servicing it with them ever since. So, when my 2006 Acura MDX went out of warranty I took it to Funk's Auto. I am completely satisfied with their group and would not hesitate in recommending them. Their shop certainly is not as flashy as those dealership shops, but do not let that dissuade you as the pricing will certainly be better. read more

I drive a 1999 Honda Accord. Nothing fancy, but they still took great care of me. I called at 3:30 on a Friday (shortly before they were closing for the weekend) and they invited me to stop by anytime before 5:30. I was leaking antifreeze. I had called a couple other highly rated auto shops close by, but no one seemed willing to see me since it was so close to closing for the weekend. With a problem like this, I knew I couldn't wait to find out what was going on. They explained how to fill the radiator with water to make sure I didn't overheat on the way to the shop. They gave me a preliminary diagnosis as soon as I got there and even said they understood if I needed to take it somewhere else over the weekend. At first they were going to replace the radiator hoses and the temperature gauge, but when I brought it in on Monday, he said he had been thinking about it and didn't think I needed to replace the temperature gauge. Saved me $30 or so. A very nice gesture considering the usual "suck you dry" attitude. I'm a young female without much auto knowledge, and for the first time ever, I didn't feel like I was being taken. read more
