So we have been getting these Vietnamese hams called gio lua ( southerners call it cha lua) and gio bi for the last 2 years. And the quality of these have actually gotten BETTER!!! I'm not sure how. There is nothing to say about the service it was very straight forward and to the point, you just tell the person who worked there what you want and you pay. I don't remember if it was cash only but I do recommend paying in cash as this is Chinatown and so you're better off using cash than credit card anyways. This is definitely the go to spot in Houston to purchase any kind of gio lua (Vietnamese processed pork wrapped in banana leaves) and nem chua (fermented rolled pork usually with garlic bits and a spicy pepper wrapped together). These items can be used to eat at home with noodles, rice, bread, etc. They can also be found in your bun no hue ( Vietnamese beef noodles). The ladies are very nice behind the counter service. Our family likes to get chicken (for those scared of the pork), pork (because this is the norm and my favorite), and the hue style (has bits of cinnamon in it, so good!). They also sell nem, shredded pork (aka ruoc/cha bong), and drinks. Standing room only friends, but take it home to your family and share the wealth. During Chinese New Year's, these fly off the shelves like hotcakes. People actually stand in line before they open to get their hands on these babies. They sell until they run out, which happens almost EVERY DAY for a week before new years. They're made fresh daily, so they go perfectly with banh tet and other new years goodies. They also make really good gifts! So yum. I am seriously drooling right now. Some ideas for the gio: with banh cuon, in sandwiches, on rice, fried (replace the bacon) to be had with some eggs, and as a snack by itself. 2/9/21- So I was told to come early to get my some gio lua for my sister in law. She warned me that there would be a line and a limit. But I came in about 10am and sure enough, she was right about it. They are also limiting the sell per person to 5. So when I was walking up. People was all standing in the streets in line. Then a worker told them to stand in the side walk toward crawfish and noodles. There was about 15-20 people in line. There only so many people that can fit inside. The lines moved pretty fast. Well depending on if there are greedy people. There was this lady that was in front of me trying to buy more then the limit of 5. She was trying to tell the cashier that her husband is outside and she wanted to buy for him too. He suggested for him to wait in line like the rest of us did. She was getting upset that the cashier didn't want to give her more. That she should think about the rest of us in line waiting for the same product she came to get. He did a good job of hold his ground and not selling her more. I did get my 5 large gio lua and when I was walking out there was even more people getting ready to lined up. This place is my go to place for gio (Vietnamese ham). Every time I come back home, I always have to stop by to buy some gio. This place specializes in all types of Vietnamese ham. There's: -gio ga (steamed chicken sausage) -gio lua (steamed pork sausage) -gio bo (steamed beef sausage) -gio thu (head cheese) -cha chien (fried pork sausage) -cha que (fried pork sausage with cinnamon) -nem chua (fermented raw pork with pig skin, pepper, garlic, and chili pepper) -banh gio (a slice of steamed pork roll sandwiched between pieces of glutinous rice flour, think of it as a savory mochi sandwich). There's also drinks that you can buy such as sodas, water, juices, and Vietnamese soy milk. The prices are quite reasonable. They sell all the steamed rolls in the small size which is $10 with the exception of the pork roll. It comes in large as well which is about $20. My favorite is the cha que. Its basically cha chien but with cinnamon added it. The cinnamon gives the cha another dimension of flavor. Everything is made fresh in the morning so come early. They tend to run out of cha chien really quickly which is a shame because it's a family favorite. They also close on Wednesdays so beware of that. I would probably go here on non Lunar New Year days. So that week of preparations for the Lunar New Year, be warned that you will deal with a very long line and that they will run out before you even get to your turn. Which means that they have some delicious cha lua or Vietnamese pork roll/ham. I like going to food specialty shops like this one because that means the product will be really good since they are only focusing on a particular item so they must have it perfected! I like the regular cha lua and yes, it does taste good several days later. I prefer to eat it cold and in french bread. Mmmm.
