Whenever my family wants fast food, my vote is always on Duchess. The freshness level is just so much better. I want to focus on the chicken nuggets. Nowhere else can you get chicken nuggets that are actual whole white meat. Every other fast food nugget is ground up chicken meat. You know the nuggets are always cooked to order because they come out extremely hot. Again, when was the last time you got chicken nuggets from a fast food chain that was too hot to eat? The guy taking my order for an omelette and 3 breakfast sandwiches complained to over the speaker that he has been so busy and hadn't had a break yet like somehow that's my fault. As soon as we walked in, we could tell the restaurant needed an update. The decor was outdated and ruined the vibe of the place. We placed our order on the kiosk which was very quick and easy if using a card. When paying with cash, however, the process was much harder as no one was at the counter. Although I did enjoy being served at the fast food establishment, they forgot the bbq sauce and completely forgot our friends order. The chocolate shake was also a disappointment as it was mainly vanilla ice cream with a tiny bit of chocolate syrup. The fries are amazing here and the chicken nuggets are real chicken. I've been going to Dutchess's restaurant since the 70s, I've always asked for extra mustard on my hotdog. Recently, I noticed they changed their mustard to some sort of sweet Dijon thing. What an awful surprise I just went out and bought a big package of Hummel hotdogs. I won't be back to duchesses for dinner anytime soon. I hope that other food hasn't changed. My go to place in Connecticut. Minus a star for the lack of consistency throughout the different resturaunt locations and lack of Corprate support or responses to any complaints. For example, the cookies in Shelton/ansonia Are always warm and soft, as if they're fresh baked. However, go to Fairfield or Trumbull/Monroe, they're literally a brick, as hard as a gumdrop( every single time, wasn't just a rare occurrence). Their fries are bland but they grow on you and you learn to appreciate them and miss them sometimes. Their chicken nuggets are great, all real Chicken, but watch out because they're hottttt out of the fried. Additionally, 90% of the time I get a chicken parm sandwich, light sauce. Many locations will still load this up with sauce and the roll is a floppy pancake drenched with water if you can imagine that that looks or tastes like. Sometimes you'll have an issue and email Corprate, the issue won't get fixed for over a month and they never respond to you. One time, twice actually In Shelton, the sweet tea every single time was 90% water and 10% tea, it was flavorless. I mentioned it every time I went there and online to Corprate. It didn't get fixed for weeks! And believe me, I ate there a few times a week that month and monitored it. Other restaurants, it's 95% syrup and it's way too strong, I get two servings out of one cup after watering it down. These things are annoying but shouldn't be hard to fix once they're mentioned. read more

Duchess is a local Connecticut "fast food plus" chain which offers both the kinds of foods you'd find in BK or McD's (burger, chicken sandwich. etc.) and many premium items (chicken parm sandwich, light meals, full breakfasts). You order up front and they bring your meal out to you, along with any condiments that you might need. I prefer the hot dogs and chicken parm, along with the side salad. I do not find the fries nearly as good as BK or McD's, but they do offer other side items that are quite good (pasta, etc.) Overall, recommended. I love going to this establishment anytime or the day or night. You can order whatever you want whenever you want. The best is their bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches, Cobb salads with chicken (their cucumber dressing), hot with the works or chili mustard and onion, or the Big D burgers/chicken sandwiches. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for fresh food made to order. Check out the menu you can also get fully course dinners from meatloaf to fried clams with slaw and fries. I ordered it on GrubHub. I don't live very far only maybe 10 minutes away. So the French fries were cold. I ordered the Angus burger and though it was big round it wasn't thick at all it was this thin flimsy little burger that was smothered with mayonnaise kind of sauce and one tiny slice of tomato off to the side. And my mother ordered the seafood salad and a hotdog bun she said it wasn't very good at all. We also had a vanilla and a chocolate shake they were so thick you couldn't suck it through the straw which was OK but my chocolate shake was barely chocolate. I live in Stratford and have gone to this chains restaurant several miles away...but it's just not good. When I used to work in this area I would always go to this Duchess and I loved it for lunch. Well, last night I took my Mom here for dinner. Firstly the guy at the counter was extremely nice...and welcoming. Great to see at a fast-food establishment. At this Duchess when you order your food is brought over to you. We waited a short amount of time and it was brought to us. I tipped the kid and he was soooooo thankful and grateful...like I gave him a hundred dollars. That was also nice to see. The restaurant itself is very very clean. Unlike our area restaurant in Stratford. The food we both had was the Bid D combos, I ordered a chilli cheese dog, and a tuna melt. Duchess--you need to change your cooking oil more often & take some pride in your food. A little quality control would help. Fries not as good as those at BK across the street, and only go here for the chili dogs. My Mom goes there for the lemon meringue pie. If you need Wifi and an undisturbed place to sit it's great, just be selective about what you order and don't go through the drive through when it is busy. Nice interior with tv screens (which I find distracting because I hate the tv crap) I won't totally trash a place in my reviews, but like to give a know-before-you-go honest review. The salads I've had there have been very crisp and fresh, but not consistently. Of course you can take it back and they will do it again..was once served fried fish that was inedible. Growing up, I rarely went to this Duchess since we only came to Shelton once in a while to visit relatives. I can't remember that experience, but last week we came here after going to the Wal-Mart down the road and it was an interesting experience. The food itself was amazing. Duchess used to always be spot on, but lately they are hit and miss with things but they don't go wrong with breakfast. Plus right now they had a great deal, two breakfast sandwiches (made to order. no microwaved eggs here! and real hard rolls to boot) for $3. My boyfriend and I went to the drive-thru and ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich and a ham, egg and cheese sandwich. When we first got up to order, they made us wait five minutes before we could order. We contemplated leaving but we had become boxed in. Whatever, how much longer could it be? We ended up waiting in a line of cars for ten minutes. When we finally got to the window, they took our money and didn't say anything. We waited again for about ten minutes (we actually timed it, as we had to be home for a contractor to show up), no one even telling us what was going on. Then we saw the drive-thru girl go out to two cars in front of us and bring them bags. One drove off but the other car stayed parked. Then she came back to the window, and asked if we had the six sandwiches and hash browns. No, two egg sandwiches! She disappeared and some other girl came back and asked us the same thing, then said "oh no wait, you were the one egg sandwich, right?" She then stopped and asked if they already took our money. This is not the way to run a business! When they finally saw our order, one of the girls ran outside to the car in front. I guess they got our order.
