Used to be my favorite dimsum place for years! But last few times I feel like it's going down hill. Most the food on the cart is cold. But I do get seated faster, not much of a wait like before.

Enjoyed dim sum brunch trying various types of dishes! We arrived at 10am and were seated immediately. There were carts with a larger variety of foods to choose from vegetarian, seafood, and meats. The food was delicious and flavorful! It got crowded as time passed and the staff stayed attentive!

I've come to Mark's Duck House multiple times and it's a great place for both Chinese and non-Chinese friends to visit! There aren't official reservations, though you can call ahead of time to book a spot. The restaurant is super accommodating. At one point, I brought 9 friends and they let us all sit on the same round table! All my friends weren't Chinese so it was a new experience for them, and the staff were amazing, suggesting dishes with a range of dishes that a lot of Americans like, stretch dishes, etc. Many dim sum restaurants are rushed, but I really appreciated that the waiter worked with me to figure out the best menu for my friends. The food is really authentic (not flashy, but still good!) - there's an option for dim sum and an option for a la carte. Each of the dishes are super big, but they are on the pricier side. As a result, it's really best to visit when you're with a large group, rather than a small. If it's just two people coming, you'd only be getting 1-2 dishes and wouldn't be able to try much unless you did the dimsum!

Honestly had a more pleasant experience after my first review. There is still always a wait when you come here for dim sum but it's because it's one of the best around the area. For a table for 2 on a weekend with no reservation we probably waited 30 mins to get our table but it was well worth the wait. The staff for dim sum are very fast so as soon as you sit down you can expect to get your drinks and a cart come around immediately. They have a wide range of dim sum to choose from. Some more premium seafood items like clams and lobster expect to pay a higher price. We always leave with leftovers when we come that last a few days so it is well worth it.

Finally stopped in for dimsum on a Sunday and was pleasantly surprised that we didn't have to wait long for a table (unlike a certain other dimsum restaurant*cough* hong kong pearl *cough*). As the carts came by we grabbed some classics like shumai, shrimp hargao, shrimp rice rolls, bean curd rolls, and chicken feet. We also decided to be a bit adventurous with the abalone dumplings, roasted duck, fried chive buns, fried stuffed bean curd, and the salted egg yolk buns. We finished off with the sesame balls. All the food was amazing! My only qualm was wishing the roasted duck was warm (it was cold straight off the cart) or that it came with some warm rice at least. But everything else hit. I will say, I recommend grabbing the more fresh hot looking food that comes by because those will be most satisfying. We also loved the sesame balls because they weren't seeping oil like I've had at most other places. Can't wait to stop by again!

My friend picked this restaurant for dinner tonight. This restaurant definitely has a wide variety of items on their menu. I personally am not a very adventurous eater, so I opted for the vegetable fried rice which was delicious. But if you are looking to try something new, this is definitely a great spot to try. I also ordered spring rolls. However, the chicken looked undercooked to my friend and I. I could not get myself to test them. The staff was very friendly. Overall, a decent experience.

I went here for lunch with some friends around Chinese New Year and it was understandably packed. It was my first time visiting Mark's Duck House. It is located in a somewhat shady shopping center in Falls Church. The place is a little old but seems to be quite popular. There are roving carts for dim sum and we just pick dishes we like. I don't remember what we got but I remember getting Peking Duck on top of the dimsum. The staff mostly was nice but apologetic that we cannot stay long as it is a Chinese holiday and there are other customers waiting. Food is really inexpensive. My only complaint was the waiting area isn't spacious enough. Would love to go back soon.

Man I haven't been to Mark's in a minute. Apparently they switched owners/management a couple of times over the past few years. But the new one is doing a great job! The owner kept coming back to check in on our table; he was so funny and personable. We got the $228 meal deal for 6 people. It comes with a total of 8 dishes + dessert. It's a really good deal if you think about it. All of the food -- top-tier. I think we basically cleared out every dish that came out, the only thing we had to pack up was some fried rice and a bit of leftover shrimp I believe. I especially loved the fried crispy chicken with their garlic sauce. It's probably the best Chinese chicken I've ever had. It was so flavorful and the chicken was just the right amount of crisp. What really caught me off guard was the egg tarts. I didn't expect much, but boy was I wrong after the very first bite. Now I know I just said I had the best chicken ever, but trust me when I say these egg tarts were life-changing. It was so buttery and soft-- 11/10 for sure. Definitely will come again when I'm back in the NOVA area!

Great service and amazing Peking duck. Definitely would be back, it is pricy but the portions are huge so it's worth it

The head staff taking cash with the same hands as touching the dim sum surrounding him at the checkout counter.

I was astounded to see the head staff handling money and food with his bare hands, without washing his hands or wearing gloves while handling the food. He just grabbed the dimsum with his bare hands interchangeably with cash. Also, someone in my party got very sick with nausea and vomiting the day after we ate there. One of the Shu Mai was raw inside and when they complained to the wait staff, they argued with us instead of replacing it. Even though my friend did not continue to eat the Shu Mai, she had already taken one bite. She's been to the ER twice as a result.

I have been coming to Mark's since I was really young with my family, so happy that the quality has stayed the same all these years! I think this is one of my favorite Peking Duck places in the USA - they still do thin pancakes instead of baos, which I really love. Their duck is crispy yet juicy and the sauce is sooo flavorful. If you come here, you have to get the duck if not anything else. Other favorites are the Sizzling Beef w/ Black Pepper Sauce, the Seafood Fried Rice, the Beef Chow Mein, and the Peavine. I think all of their food is awesome and really worth the prices. The staff is very friendly as well :)

I hesitate to rave about this place because it feels like a secret compared the very large, crowded dim sum place up the street. The food was all good and hot and fresh, which is great compared to some other cart dim sum places around here. There were more veggie options I saw, including Chinese broccoli, etc. The shrimp rolls and shrimp dumplings were very good. And the servers were friendly and attentive even amid the crush of people on a weekend AM.

Don't let appearances fool you. They've had zero health code issues despite the food seeming to be just flying around.
    John S.

Mark's is a traditional dim sum place and if you've never been, it can be a lot to take in. They walk around with carts overflowing with dishes and you tell them when you see something that strikes your fancy. They add it to your table and mark your tally sheet. It's a good time to be adventurous with your taste buds and try new things. The dishes are also shared with your whole table with people and everyone just grabs what they want. The free for all frenzy takes a min to get used to but go with people you like and the meal is an experience. Don't forget to get a pineapple bun for dessert.

Mark's Duck House Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Mark's Duck House

    Are they open on Sunday?

Yes. Sunday is always their busiest day. That is when everyone goes for Dim Sum.

Is their dining room open for seating? Do they serve dim sum all day?

The dining room is now open. Dim sum is served every day although I am not sure it is available in the evening.

Are there specific hours for dim sum?

Being refurbished. Call for carry-out dim sum

Do you need to pre-order the Peking Duck?

Don't know about during the pandemic, but they never required pre-orders in the past. Great Peking duck, and all their other duck dishes are also excellent -- especially the Orange Duck.

Has anyone else checked their bill lately (from Mark's Duck House) and found a "surcharge" for $8 added to their bill (even though there was no order of tea or a special a dish costing $8)?

Something is very off with the (lack of) protein quality at the Falls Church location. The head-on shrimp were smallish - some were 21-25 count, some were 26-30 count, and all had an off-putting *green* poop line. The clams were inedible and tiny. Half of the clams were missing from their shells. They shouldn't be sold. When I showed the poor quality of the clams to the server, they offered a 20% discount - clearly they don't get it. What keeps me loyal to the brand is their signature Hot N Juicy Special sauce (mod: extra garlic). No other Viet Cajun (even in Houston or wherever) comes close to the depth and complexity of the Hot N Juicy Special sauce. For now, the winning move is to order a some sausage in a cup with Hot N Juicy Special medium sauce w/extra garlic TO GO, and sautée it with a bag of defrosted Costco head-on 16-20 count shrimp, or a few dozen live Cherrystone clams from HMart. There is so much potential here. The sauce is boss. Solve your protein problem!

It can get crowded inside, but it has never been intolerable. It is very well maintained and clean. Sometimes service may be slow but you will definitely be served. I usually stick to lamb and beef, and if you are satisfied with those then go for it. The meat is consistently well balanced and never too lean or overly fatty. Just beautiful cuts. I have tried several broths including original, spicy, tomato, and pickled veggie chicken and all were exactly what you would expect and very satisfying. For such an established chain, it is impressive that it continues to get better. Recently they added more beverage options beyond the soda machine, which is already included with the dinner price, including my hot pot favorite drink, plum juice. One thing to note is that if you try to go on Fridays after 8pm, you will probably not get a seat. I went once, but the waitlist was already hours long by 7:30pm so I went elsewhere. The self-serve veggie and noodle station leaves a bit to be desired - not the greatest selection - but sufficient for a hit of spinach or broccoli. I never see enoki mushrooms or crown daisy (Tong Ho) here - disappointing. Also, the floor gets unreasonably greasy to walk on about halfway through the day and stays that way for the rest of the night, so tread carefully! All of the meats on the standard AYCE menu are good/great quality. This is one of the only hot pots that does not require dipping sauce (even though I always concoct one anyways) because the broth is so permeating and flavorful. Best standard lamb I've ever had. Looking forward to trying the specialty lamb menu someday. So far it has been hard to resist the $21 midday weekday AYCE special, and the even better $17 "late night" AYCE special. On a mid-Saturday afternoon, the restaurant was about ¾ full. We started out with the Wonton Soup and the Spicy Wonton soup. The Wonton soup is just okay, but the Spicy Wonton Soup is wonderful and highly recommended. For another appetizer, we ordered the Scallion Pancake. It has a nice dense texture and I really liked it. It would've been even better if it came with a dipping sauce. We also ordered the pickled cabbage. It was good, though lacking seasoning. Our first entrée was ground pork in a delicious sauce accompanied by sprouts and thinly sliced cucumber (or was that zucchini?). Recommended! Our second entrée was a Pan Fried Beef Bun. The beef was flavorful but the bread was kinda dry. Our last entrée was the Beef Wraps. These were great! Who woulda thunk that beef and fresh carrots would go together so well?! Oh, the chili sauce in a jar on the table is extra tasty. At the end, before we got our check, we were given a plate with sliced cucumbers in a light tasty sesame chili sauce. Excellent! But the hot tea was an epic fail. It had no flavor whatsoever. Peeking inside the teapot, all I could see was a micro tiny tea bag floating or sort of sinking. One other thing I kinda don't want to bring up in light of the great food we enjoyed, but need to in the spirit of full disclosure, is to mention that A&J shares space in the building with several other businesses. The restrooms are common to all the businesses. A&J needs to lean hard on the property owner/manager to do a deep cleaning in those restrooms. I'll leave it at that.

However, my opinion changed when my wife and I dined in the restaurant for the first time. It will not be our last. What drove me to dine in was the ambience I observed when I picked up a previous takeout order. It was a really nice place, with neat décor, plenty of seating, and a serving staff that was obviously attentive. This remained my impression when we came here for the first time recently. Contrary to our takeout orders, the food blew us away when it was fresh from the kitchen. Perhaps this was because we ordered different things, or perhaps because what we ordered to-go (e.g., fried eggplant, Szechuan chicken) did not travel well. Whatever the case, but this was some of the best Chinese food we have eaten in a long time. For appetizers we ordered the puffy scallion pancake, which was fun to tear and share, and came with some very nice curry sauce or dipping. We also ordered the pork soup dumplings, which were everything you could want in a soup dumpling - piping hot with a warm, soul-soothing broth inside (but which does not travel particularly well in takeout orders). For our entrees, my wife ordered the duck fried rice. I am not the biggest fan of fried rice, but this was some of the best I ever had. The duck favor was prominent but not overwhelming and the pineapple was the best integrated I have ever experienced in a savory dish. I had leftover for lunch today and it was still quite good. I ordered the fish in chili oil, a bubbling, soupy dish covered in peppers. This was phenomenal, an excellent balance of heat, numbing, and flavor. And there was plenty of fish in the dish, as well. I will be hard pressed not to order this every time we come here in the future. We split the fried green beans (solid - crisp and well spiced), which I ate for breakfast over rice with some of the leftover fish. Again, it was still good. In person we ordered Mongolian beef, chili fish, cumin lamb, Szechuan chicken, a crispy pork belly dish that I can't remember the exact name, and kids broccoli fried shrimp. Loved everything but especially pleasantly surprised by the crispy pork belly dish. These dishes were way too spicy for me, should have heeded the warning when there are 3 chili symbols on the menu: chili fish, szechuan chicken.

A Chinese review: some of the worst dim sum I've ever had and the staff is racist…read more A friend and i went for a late lunch today. My friend is craving dim sum after being in the country, visiting from Hong Kong for 3 weeks. My friend is quite tan, his mom is Filipino, but he grew up in HK and speaks mostly canto and Tagalog. We tried speaking Cantonese to the staff who are speaking it to each other, so they clearly can. My friend has perfect Cantonese. Mine is ok but I am also very clearly Chinese. They replied in broken English instead. One waitress looked at my friend and handed us forks. So clearly, some racism/colorism in the staff. Context: lots of Filipinos in HK are maids and generally looked down on, so not surprised this happened here. The food was mushy and gross. The shrimp in the cheung fan was grayish. It felt like they had this ready early in the morning and reheated it for later. Siu mai was falling apart. Cha siu bao was good but how do you mess that one up? I've gotten take out from this place before in the past and I always forget why I try to not come here, they forget something every time. At this point I'm sure they're doing it on purpose, like little thieves. Anyway, this place has the advantage of being close, with so little dim sum options in the area, unless you want to make the trip to Tysons or Vienna. Or Maryland. One staff member was laying down on a bunch of chairs nearby loudly watching something on her phone. Any other day, I wouldn't complain about that, everyone deserves a break. But given the food quality and the clear racism in the staff, they should be called out for everything. As with any Asian restaurant, feel free to treat me like trash if the food is good. But this place fails in both places.
