This place has been consistently serving delicious dishes ever since I discovered it over 8 years ago. Can't go wrong with the chicken and broccoli, combination fried rice, wonton soup, and hot n sour soup. We've tried other dishes as well but our staple dishes just hit different. Tasty, hefty portions, and very cost effective. It sheds a new light on what's viewed as typical Chinese takeout. We've even catered events and the quality did not lack. Located in an unassuming shopping center on Lee Hwy, it can easily be dismissed. But don't be fooled one try and you will find yourself coming back for more. Plenty of parking available and the workers are always so friendly, they remember their loyal customers. read more

I was in the mood for Chinese carryout and I always drive past this place, so I decided to give them a try. I ordered General Tsao Chicken and steamed veggies with brown sauce on the side. Once I ordered, the gentleman asked if it was my first time there and new to the neighborhood? I responded yes to both questions and he said, Welcome! And gave me two candy mints. That gesture was so kind. The atmosphere is very casual, just like the sign outside says, "casual dining". The other aspect that leads me to give 5 stars, I observed a guy ordering food and his English was sorta choppy. The gentleman that worked there was so patient and respectful to the customer, it warmed my heart. The food was what I expected and delish. I'm glad I found my neighborhood carryout for Chinese food! My husband and I stumbled upon this place recently and we've been going at least once a week for their lunch special as carryout. The portions are very generous, so we share one order and put the second one in the refrigerator for a meal a few days later. They are very busy, but the orders come out quickly. I've passed this establishment on a daily basis for years. Tonight I stop and ordered a Szechuan beef and vegetable fried rice. The portions are large and I paid around $21 for both which was very fair. Both dishes were very good and I enjoyed them at home. You go here for take out and you look past the aged decor and the not so clean tables. Not clean. From a distance the kitchen looked on. I'll see how I feel later. They have consistently kept prices low while delivering on great tasting food and service. I know people don't usually give places more than a three and I can't give it a five but it's one of the best Chinese food places here. (And I eat a lot of Chinese food!) The food is great! From the fried dumplings (attached is a pic), to the beef and broccoli (my son's favorite), to the combination lo mein! It's all good. I can't actually rate the seafood as I am allergic to shellfish, but it looks delicious just like the beef and poultry dishes. The only reason I don't give it 5 Stars is because of the ladies at the register. I am doing you a favor by coming to eat and spending my money at your restaurant- don't treat me like a second class citizen. In the very least you could smile and say hi. After searching for a cheap Chinese Restaurant in Merrifield, I came across Oriental Garden. I looked at the menu listed on Yelp (as the restaurant doesn't appear to have a website), and ordered accordingly. BEWARE- the current menu on Yelp is NOT CORRECT. I have notified them and posted pictures of the actual menu. For pickup I ordered sweet and sour chicken, an egg roll and hot and sour soup. There was a bit of an issue with communication on the phone, when I asked how much it cost to ad soup, the gentleman replied "thank you". I repeated it a few times and then we got it cleared up. The portion sizes are pretty large. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was good, nothing special, but not bad. Nice, large pieces of chicken with perhaps too much breading, but that seems normal. This was served with carrots, peppers, and pineapple, steamed rice, and a large side of sweet and sour sauce (the sauce was a bit runny and lacked any kick). The egg roll was nice and crispy and tasted like you would expect an egg roll to taste. The hot and sour soup, was a bit bland, but it had a good amount of mushrooms tofu, and egg, which I love. All in all a pretty good meal, but since I was expecting to pay $4.95 in accordance with the Yelp menu, I was bummed that it ended up costing $10.45. For less than $5 it would have been an AWESOME deal, but for $10, it was fine. read more

Though I've never been there for lunch, they apparently have lunch specials. 2 items for $6 including tax. You can eat there for take away. Their General Tso is excellent. This place is official. I am very picky about where I eat Chinese food. Their meat quality is perfect ! Thin slices of beef that are very tender and not chewy at all! Loved it. I had the hunan beef which was made to order. I actually watched the chef prepare it in the wok. Veggies were fresh but I didn't get any mushrooms. They may not make hunan beef with it anyways. Located in Merrifield is this little Chinese restaurant. This is your typical mom and pop run shop. They are very fast when preparing your food and pretty cheap. They have some good lunch combos. During the lunch rush they have dishes already prepared and I think you can pick two dishes and be out in like 2 minutes. If you want to order other things then they have lots to choose from. The food here is in my opinion very Americanized. It's getting harder and harder to find an authentic Chinese restaurant. I've tried a lot of their dishes. The kung pao, fried rice, lo mein, yu shang pork, hot and sour soup, wonton soup, egg rolls. All of them are just basic. The kung pao lacks flavor and is too spicy for me, I don't like how they add the celery and stuff to it. The yu shang is way too sweet. The fried rice and lo mein are pretty good. The hot and sour soup is very bland and taste too watered down, but the wonton soup is good. They use the little wontons with the thin wrappers. The décor inside is nothing to brag about. It just a bunch of open table with soy sauce, salt and pepper on them. In the summer it gets hot in there so try and sit near the fan. Price is cheap. I use to work near here, so we'd only go here because it was cheap and fast. On my scale of things, I'd have to rate this a 2. read more

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant and I wish that I had tried it sooner! I've driven past it a thousand times over the years and finally decided to try it last year. I immediately regretted having waited so long! Their crispy beef is amazing and their General Tso's has great flavor and that "something" that is hard to define that makes it better than others I've tried. Since none of this information matters without some benchmark around what "good" is to me...I do not at all like Panda Express and I wonder what it is that makes anyone want to go there. A hole in the wall type of Chinese restaurant, but it's a good one. So far I have only tried their General Tso Chicken, Sesame Chicken, and Beef and Broccoli dishes and I have no complaints. This is, in a way, your standard Chinese Brown Sauce in the 55 Gallon Drum place. Grease by the tanker truck. Sodium by the bushel basket - though I don't think they have bushel baskets in China. The name, of course, is an oxymoron, as it implies that coffee is available here, which it is not. I don't think they even have coffee in China. Japan, yes, where it is "Kohi" and tastes like Maxwell House Instant - but I digress. Nonetheless, I gobbled up the generous portion of my Hunan Pork. Leaving only the suspicious brown sludge at the bottom of the styrofoam box. All in all a nice place with sweet if curt and affect-neutral genuine Chinese staff. I'm slightly biased in this review as Oriental Cafe is the restaurant that first introduced me to Kung Pao chicken back in 1996 when I used to work in Merrifield. We Americans are infatuated with that dish it seems. They do it well with a minimum of vegetables (green onion and celery is all), and they load up on the peanuts. I would prefer their sauce to have more flavor, but I usually doctor it up myself. I really enjoy their dumplings as well, they aren't like other Chinese restaurants that are all dough and no filler. Their dumplings have a silky thin 'dumpling' and are loaded up with meat. Anyways, this place is about value, the prices are good, it's not a great spot to take a date, but they serve good American style Chinese Food. Oh. And they introduced me to Kung Pao Chicken. Which is why I can't really talk about anything besides the Kung Pao and the dumplings here because that's all I've had, about a hundred times. I also love the serve your own side of Hot Sauce deal they have going on as well. I've never seen that in Chinese Restaurants and I always request for extra hot sauce on the side. read more

The owner interest that this was how the vegetables were purchased. The service and prices were so bad I literally signed up for yelp to write this review. Called in a party order, including an order of combo fried rice, they messed it up, giving us a small container but charging for a party platter. They tried to tell me it was the "large" box, which was literally the exact same size as the "small" box. I physically held up the boxes to show them. They were incredibly rude and dismissive. They tried to chanrge me even more for the "party" platter I actually wanted, adding onto the credit card receipt as a "tip", I said no. Not only terrible service, but overpriced and shady. All of these prices and "sizes" they were trying to scam on me were not on the menu. Also, no prices for any items were visible on the receipt. As for the food after I escaped the scammy den: the fried rice was dry, soup thin and watery, noodles rubbery, chicken overbreaded, and the egg rolls basically hollow tubes of dough. THE WORST! I called in a carry out order, the lady i spoke with was a bit rude on the phone when I tried to ask a few simple questions. She kept on cutting me off asking what I wanted. I ended up ordering Szechuan Style Beef and 2 Egg rolls. I picked it up and they didn't even include any soy sauce, hot mustard or duck sauce with the order. I guess I was expected to grab my own at the counter?? Thankfully I had some extra Duck Sauce in my fridge at home, but nothing could of saved those bland Egg Rolls. They pretty much tasted like fried greasy cardboard. My Schezuan Beef was extremely greasy and it tasted like it was cooked it in burnt oil! The entire dish tasted soo salty I could hardly eat it. Great Szchuan chicken in american portions as several reviews stated, and get the same thing just about every time, It comes out a little different every time, When I ask for no scallions, I have to say it twice, calling them sping onions, then waiting for either name to register, then ignored. The most curious thing about this place is they never close the cash register, or ring up the sale, I keep looking at the blank display, and seldom check for the right change. I got the general tso chicken and the hot and sour soup. Soup was good. Tasted like your regular run of the mill soup so no complaints there I mean really can you mess up soup? But quite frankly the worst general tsos chicken I've ever had. It was inedible. It was dry, the stale breading quickly revealed it's true qualities of the chicken that probably sat for a long time. Absolutely the worst chicken I've ever had. Save your money and go anywhere else than here. And for some reason when I called in on the phone it felt so rushed, they would say bye and then I would ask what the total was, and then they would say bye again and I'm like how long is it gonna take. They keep trying to get you off the phone before they give you any details. But really how do you mess up general tsos chicken. I did not have the greatest experience at the oriental cafe. The manager working the counter was very high strung and rushed me to make my order when there was no one in line behind me. I ordered the steamed snow pea chicken. When I picked up my order, the meal had a brown gravy used for mashed potatoes all over it. When I took it back, they told me they wanted to just rinse it off instead of giving me what I had ordered. When they finally gave it to me steamed, I got mostly carrots. -- carrots in a meal called snow pea chicken? When I inquired,I was told that's just how they served it. 75%carrot, 15% snow peas. Talk about the absolute worst service! We called to place an order for delivery, knowing that on their lunch menu it's a minimum of $12 to deliver. We ordered $12-worth and the Guy on the phone said it's $15 minimum. So my husband asked how come on their menu it says otherwise, and they hung up on him. He called back and said that he just placed an order and wanted to know if they were delivering, and they abruptly said "no" And hung up on his face. We have never seen such bad service! They lost our business. And frankly, given this experience I wouldn't be surprised if they regularly spit in people's food. Wouldn't put it past them. read more
