I'm not big on donuts but man if I'm going to have one I want it to be from Duck Donuts. I came in here to buy some donuts for a birthday but couldn't resist trying one myself. Hot donuts hand dipped in any icing you want and then you pick your toppings. Some of your options are vanilla icing, strawberry icing, chocolate icing, maple icing, powdered sugar, glaze, and then you get to pick toppings like peanuts, coconut, sprinkles, and even bacon. Of course I couldn't resist the maple icing with bacon this might be the best dessert/breakfast ever. I think getting a bite from one of these donuts as soon as you can is the best way to eat them but you can also heat them up if you bring them home. I don't even eat donuts but came here after a friend sent me. WOW. I like Krispy Kreme's about once or twice a year, and they are great. I now like Duck Donuts, and they are great. I love both places. I hate to bring up a "competitor" but I do not feel like they are competitors, I am just pointing out the very different experience, as many people may be used to Krispy. So here at Duck (they originated in Duck, NC), they cook your donut to order. I had a cakey donut cooked to perfection with chocolate and bacon on top. WOW. Wow, wow, this place is amazing. Man these donuts are good! We stopped by right after 3 on a Sunday and a very friendly owner/manager (?) welcomed us by holding the door open and locking it behind us. Yep, we were the last customers of the day and we got lucky because we totally failed to check the hours online. He let us know right away that they were super busy - evidenced by the 20 or so people hanging out in the donut "waiting area". We didn't care - if we had the time to make a donut run on a Sunday afternoon, we clearly weren't super busy. These donuts are made to order so we expected a slight wait. They are also sold in half dozens or dozens. The place is clean, big and bright inside. You walk up to the counter to order first. All the donuts are the same - this confused me at first. You just pick your optional coating and toppings. Um, these donuts are $1.20. What! We ordered 3 and were totally surprised that our total was less that four bucks. These guys could charge double and people would still be all about it. We went with the daily special (strawberry shortcake), lemon glazed and a chocolate with bacon crumbles. We were number 29 and they were currently on number 15. We just hung out and watched donuts been made (there were about 6 people working at lightning speed!). They were on our order in less than 10 minutes, so no big deal. They gave everyone a free cinnamon sugar donut to apologize for the wait. Such a treat! These donuts are hot, light, airy and delicious. I don't know that I've ever had a made to order donut before. How can I go back now? Recently some doughnuts were brought into my workplace and they were Duck Doughnuts. I tried one and thought it was delicious. I told myself I needed to seek this place out and try some more of their donuts and on a Saturday AM that is just what I did. I ordered a chocolate glazed, maple glazed with bacon topping and a sugar and cinnamon doughnuts. Their doughnuts are delicious! They are a little different than a Krispy Kreme for example in that they are cake donuts and not yeast donuts. They keep it pretty simple at Duck Donuts with the number of glazes and toppings options. This isn't a super fancy doughnuts place like Monuts in Durham or Rise Biscuits and Donuts. I think I know now where all of the kiddos in Cary come on a Saturday morning. There were munchkins everywhere! The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the coffee. One bite of their donuts, and I was immediately blown away at how good and fresh they were! I'm not a big donuts person, but the donuts here were so good and fresh, I came back a second time later that week. When I walked in at about 3 pm, the first thing I noticed was that there weren't any donuts on display like at other donut places. And after looking at the menu, the glazes and toppings seemed a little pedestrian compared to other places. However, I was thoroughly surprised to learn that the donuts are freshly fried and made to order. I have never experienced such a thing before at a donut shop, and it really makes a HUGE difference in the taste of the donuts. My first trip there, I ordered a donut with maple glaze with bacon bits and another with strawberry glaze and chocolate sprinkles. My jaw almost dropped when I saw how fresh and amazing they looked! The glaze was still melting on the donuts, and they were so hot and moist on the inside. You can actually see them freshly fry each donut, and they do not come out greasy at all. The maple with bacon is a must try in my opinion. The maple is sweet, but not too sweet. The bacon bits are real bacon. It was just a perfect combo of sweet and saltiness. The strawberry with chocolate was also amazing. I went back a second time and got lemon with rainbow sprinkles, sugar and cinnamon with vanilla icing, and chocolate with coconut. I loved all three. The sugar, cinnamon and vanilla icing tasted like a soft and warm cinnamon roll, and coconut flakes with chocolate glaze was amazingly fresh. They definitely do not skimp on toppings here and for $1.20 a donut, you are really getting amazing quality donuts for such a reasonable price. I would highly recommend Duck Donuts for anyone looking to get freshly made donuts. For the very reasonable price and freshness, you really can't beat the quality of donuts they offer here. Hot donuts made to order with topping/frostings of your choice. The donuts are A-OK but I honestly don't understand the hype. Don't get me wrong, if you have a donut cravings, these will certainly do the trick but many of the non-DunkinDonut shops I've been to have had donuts of similar caliber or better. The coffee is OK but nothing to write home about. The staff are really friendly and efficient. Time from order to Nom time is about 5min. or less. Keep in mind this is not a cafe, there are only 2 small tables so if you're looking to get a few donuts, a coffee, and chat or pull out your laptop to do some work, this is not your destination. However, it was raining when we went, but it looks like they have a really cute outside area that would be perfect in the spring. read more

I never thought I would find donuts on par with New England in any other region of the country. These are different, but equally good. Instead of being big, crispy on the outside (fried), and doughy, Duck Donuts are dense and cakey, soft-baked (even a little mushy/undercooked), and just thoroughly delicious. They're made to order with relatively few choices. So if there's one downside, it's that you can't get a chocolate donut - yet. Maybe they'll read this and rethink that philosophy. Nothing says loving like a chocolate donut. Anyway, you take your yellow cake donut and pick a flavor - orange, lemon, chocolate, maple, etc. Then you pick your topping(s) - apparently there's no extra charge for multiple toppings, so I had both chocolate sprinkles and bacon. You get quite a lot of bacon! After one orange/chocolate/bacon donut with my friends, we all got back in line and got more. I made this one a lemon/chocolate/bacon, because who can go wrong with sprinkles and bacon? Don't change what works for you. If I lived here, I would be regularly pulling down a half dozen and calling it a meal. This is crack for Triangleites. I don't see how the lines aren't already out the door after just a few months. read more

Hot fresh cake donuts. Lighter than the ones I grew up with. So delicious, especially hot. I got the cinnamon sugar. I'd like to try something fancier but I'm a purist. Cake donuts imho are best plain, powdered or sugared. Save that icing & glaze for your Krispy Kreme fix. Totally different style of donut. Duck Donuts taste like the homemade ones our grandma's & aunts used to fry. My only question is why on Earth they dont have more small tables in there and on the sidewalk in front of the place? I get that they mostly do take out but 2 tables & a window seat with stools makes it hard for families with small kids. I dont have kids but I saw some parents struggling with it. They could definitely fit some in as well as have a cashier outside handing out the order sheets ahead of time. The que seems longer than it really is because everyone has their entire family in line, strollers, etc. Get them out of that line. One or two people ordering while For Here orders go sit would make more sense. Or having a For Here & a To Go line even better...just a thought. tl:dr- Space planning could have been better. read more

I'm a big fan of the Oreo topped donuts and they have one of the best Donuts I've had all my life as they are made right in front of your eyes. Still though, the plain donut is amazing dipped in coffee if that's what you're after. I'm sure someone around you has gone on and on about Duck Donuts, so really all that's left to be said is - go try it! Be sure to eat them hot! If they've cooled down, just pop them in the microwave for a few seconds to get back to that hot amazing gooey state. PS - if you're ordering a lot of donuts, PLEASE do everyone else a favor and use the ordering cards that are on a shelf when you first walk in. There are few things more annoying than going in for one donut and some coffee, only to get behind someone who doens't know what they want, are ordering two dozen for the office, and are taking forever looking at the menu trying to make up combinations. Figure out what you want on paper, then just hand it to the cashier. ALSO, if you're getting a bunch for a group/the office/etc... you can just tell them 'assorted dozen'. They had glaze, chocolate, vanilla, maple, lemon, orange, and strawberry frosting and then you can add sprinkles, bacon, or a little drizzle of a different flavor. I'm not really big into sweets, so I have tried to make a point in avoiding the donut craze that seems to have consumed our culinary world these days. But, I was swayed to check out Duck Donuts since it opened up only miles around the corner from my house and was lucky enough to not have to wait in line on a Sunday afternoon. Only moments later, a huge line formed behind me but wow, let me just say - these warm, heavenly freshly made donuts hit the spot. I wanted more - so many more, but I exhibited self control. I went basic shared a glazed donut and then on the recommendation of the cashier, the cinnamon sugar donut (apparently one of the most populars as well). They melted in your mouth - they were somewhat cake-like as I read other reviews mentioning, but still devine and light - not at all a disappointment. At only $1.20/donut - they are a super affordable snack. I now know what the hype is about - and unfortunately, it's triggered a lil sweet tooth in me and I'm eyeing some other donut shops I've so blissfully ignored the last several years in this area. Yikes -- off to the gym I go. In terms of space, the indoor seating is definitely limited with only two round tables (4 seats) and a small section by the front window with a couple of bar stools... there are a couple of chairs near the pick up area so clearly it's not a place to lounge around and chill. However, the outside area appears to have a nice wooden outdoor patio/deck that looks new - since it was cold and mid-Feb, the tables weren't out but it does appear to have some nice seating there for when weather permits. My taste buds thank me, my thighs don't -- approach with caution. read more

If you are looking for a chocolate long john this is not the place. BUT if you want a fresh, hot, soft, customized, donut experience, then this IS THE PLACE!!! Duck Donuts is the Build-a-Bear of the donut world. The steps are easy. You choose an icing/flavor and topping. I test drove 3 different options: maple bacon, cinnamon sugar, and powdered sugar. The only donut base option is a vanilla cake, which I was skeptical about, but it is pretty tasty! Light, fluffy, not too greasy, and compliments the icing/topping/flavor options. I would order all three again. The maple bacon was good. Sweet with a bit of salty. They did not skimp on the bacon pieces! The cinnamon sugar is one of the most popular options and it was okay. I would eat it again and it was far from bad, just not my favorite. For me the powdered sugar was going out on a limb. I was never a big fan of the powdered sugar donuts. This one though...mmmmmmmmmmm! The staff was friendly and helpful. It is also pretty neat to watch them make your order. :) There is merchandise available for purchase in case you want to display your love of Duck Donuts. You can just walk up and order from the cashier or fill out an order form (which they even have Ticonderoga pencils for you to use...my favorite!). Inside the seating is very limited. There is an outside seating area, which would be enjoyable during cooler times of the year. read more

It is my understanding that this donut place originated in duck North Carolina which is near Corolla. What makes this place special is that they make the donuts to order meaning when you order it they make it. Make ordering easy and simply order a dozen of assorted and watch the magic. I witnessed the female donut artist handcraft each doughnut until my Beautiful dozen was complete. Doughnut heaven. These donuts are great - you can walk in and watch them mix the dough, stick it in their little fryer thing, and then top off the donuts based on your order. Then you get to eat them fresh and hot! Their donuts are made in smallish batches (think of a machine that is less than 6 feet long that just makes donuts two at a time!) It's the kind of donut machine you see at the state fair, except on a (slightly) larger scale. And their dough puffs up great and has awesome flavor (probably a lot because of the oil they use!) My kids love to watch the donuteers put the toppings on the donuts, and it's a great experience... One tip: there can be a long wait if you arrive and place an order, call ahead when you are on your way there and they can have your donuts ready to go when you arrive! read more
