They're pretty good, but also expensive and long wait so be prepared for that. One of those things that's a novel thing to do, fun every once and a while but not worth doing more than once during your vacation. Two of the best things about Duck Donuts is that they are customizable and served warm. Who cares how many calories are in them, you're on vacation. read more

Yelpers, I have to say my expectations were a bit too high on Duck Donuts due to all of the incredibly positive reviews. Yes, maybe I've eaten a few too many donuts while on my trips around the US, but, in my opinion Duck Donuts is solid and a great option in Duck, but not life changing. Duck Donuts are cake donuts, served warm (and when I say warm, I mean, almost too hot to eat in the first couple of minutes, warm) and the icings and toppings are customizable, as noted by other Yelpers. They are also pretty small (my friend M and I shared three between the two of us) so after waiting in line you may want to get more than just one! Flavors wise we tried three: Vanilla, my favorite of the three, very sweet and matched well with the cake donut, Maple, very maple-y but almost a little too sweet, and Strawberry, which I would skip, as it tasted a bit artificial and had a different texture (thicker, crumblier) than the other two. Our other friend K got one with chocolate glaze and chocolate sprinkles which she loved, so might try that next time. The donuts themselves are a little heavy for my taste and the flavor reminded me a little too much of Entenmann's donuts. We rented a house in Corolla with a group of 10..........so I'm taking everyone's (from 9 years old to 50 years old) opinion of these donuts into account in my review. Personally, would have given them a 2. Others said they were the best donuts they ever tasted----evidently, they have not tasted a lot of donuts like yours truly. Important things to consider about Duck Donuts. 1. These are cake donuts. I thought the cinnamon sugar was the best of the bunch. The donut itself was warm and soft but became dry later in the day. You choose what icing you would like your donut dipped in. The icings are not high quality.....tasted kind of chemical to me. But the biggest sin (egregious! ) was the maple bacon donut. They spinkle it with Baco's. How can you give a 5 stars when they use imitation bacon? If you like tender, raised yeast donuts (a la Krispy Kreme), this is not your place. Great donuts indeed - they are different from any I have had, and being from the land where Krispy Kreme reigns supreme, I've had a lot of donuts. Duck Donuts uses one "base" donut (which is smart for the volume they do) and then you customize with sugars (cinnamon, powdered) or glazes (including maple, strawberry and peanut butter). You can then add toppings (sprinkles, coconut or peanuts) to glazed donuts. The plain were so good -call me a purist, but they were my favorite. I loved the strawberry glaze, liked the chocolate glazes (turned grainy once cooled) but thought the sugar glaze was too sweet. I wish I had tried one rolled in cinnamon sugar - maybe next time. I got an iced coffee and the coffee was okay, but it tasted flat and slightly burnt, like the pots haven't been cleaned in a while. And, I recognize how silly this sounds at a sugar-laden spot, such as a donut shop, but at the prices they are charging, they should have some real Splenda available, not just some clumpy off-brand. I waffled about reviewing with 4 stars or 5, but ultimately had to go with 4 because the coffee was just not up to par for this price point (yes, for donuts, these are not cheap). It would also be great if they had more seating so you can really enjoy the donuts, hot and fresh on-site. With all that said, I can see why many don't consider their OBX trip complete without hitting Duck Donuts and I'm sure the create-your-own donut options are a great hit for kids and teens. read more

Not much more to say about this place which hasn't been said before. The donuts are super fresh made right before your eyes and justify the $12/doz prices. All of them were great -- slightly crunchy texture of the outside, warm soft center on the inside. The maple bacon is fantastic! read more

I've been hearing about Duck Donuts for awhile, so was excited to finally give these donuts a try while we were vacationing in the Outer Banks. When we walked in, the place was packed and you could smell the fresh donuts. Basically, they have cake donuts and then you can pick your frosting and toppings. I'm usually not a huge fan of cake donuts, but these were so light and airy that I didn't mind them. I loved all the choices and during our week vacation, ate quite a few varieties. I think one of my favs of the week was the S'mores and the lemon with raspberry sauce and coconut. You may have to wait a little bit to get your donuts, but it's worth the wait!! read more

Based on reviews, figured the experience of the morning donuts for our vacationing group might suffice with this novelty. Instead, the line is out the door at 7:34am EST as was expected from the review pics posted. Waited 15 minutes to get inside, and it was absolute chaos. Zero customer direction as to where to go/stand/do next. Cattle gates would help corral the customer into the next point. Some white shirted female was consistently hacking up her lungs into her shirt and it seemed as if she'd rather be somewhere else @ 7:34am in the morning. Frankly, as a customer, so would I. Waiting the amount of time I did to have the "experience" boasted about online reviews was a major fail on this. I wasn't entirely sure how to order my dozen donuts, but easily fumbled through it. Paid my $14/dozen and continue to stand shoulder/shoulder with no acknowledgement of any orders being called. Someone should be assisting move through the orders faster when people can hear their order number being called. While having 50 minutes to wait from start to finish, i notice that my receipt the cashier completely messed up my selections. I couldnt understand the soft spoken southern dialect order calling, but took my box of dozens back to an awaiting house full of you children also vacationing at out location only to open the box to find that the messed up receipt doesn't even match the boxed dozens. Nonetheless, the donuts themselves were good and are worth the $1.35/each cost. But the experience itself negates the novelty experience that I was hoping for. This is definitely the best donut I've ever had in my life. I love donuts so this is saying a lot. Your donuts are made to order. You pick your toppings and icing. I chose a chocolate icing with coconut flakes. My hubby chose peanut butter icing and peanuts. We also ordered iced coffee which was self serve (you get a cup of ice and then fill it with the coffee). It was a little weak and not the best. But it served it's purpose. We waited about 5 min for our donuts. I wasn't expecting them to be hot. They were piping hot and fresh. The icing was melting and gooey. It was fantastic. It was one of those times when you are eating and you are actually sad when it's finished. Heavenly and delicious. Duck Donuts hit the spot after an early morning horse-seeing adventure. The line was out the door at 9:30am, but it moved quickly. The concept, as others note, is a regular vanilla cake donut (being made fresh right behind the counter) that customers can customize with different frostings and toppings. I was underwhelmed with the flavor and texture of the donuts after trying three different kinds. Maybe ordering maple bacon was a bad idea in the south when you live near real maple syrup taps in abundance. Our order had multiple incorrect donuts once we returned home and really took a look. Stayed at the Outer Banks for a week, and heard nothing but rave reviews about the famed "Duck Donuts." Unfortunately, my opinion of the donuts contradicts that of most others. I found them heavy (aka greasy), lacking the light and fluffy texture of good donuts. In addition, the toppings (I tried glazed and chocolate) were overwhelmed by the doughy donut itself. My stomach felt full, and my appetite was left unimpressed. I'd much prefer Krispy Kreme or Spudnuts over these... My opinion is to pass on the long lines, and grab a box of something else. read more

This is the best donut place ever! I used to be obsessed with Dunkin Donuts, but then I discovered Duck Donuts one day while going yard saling with my mom. We tried it, and agreed it was a do-over. Now, we take our family there all the time! Recently, we took our extended family. The only complaint I have is that it's kind of small, and it takes really long. There was a line out the door when we got there 2 days ago. We asked the worker if this was normal, and she said it was!!! It was my first time to the Outer Banks and I stayed with some friends at a nice house that was located just a quarter mile from this amazing place. If you love donuts, you MUST go here. They open nice and early and you can go in and order some simple looking donuts, but here's the beauty of it all - they look like your average donuts size and shape but when you pick one up, holding it between your fingers, you can immediately feel the quality oozing out in the texture alone. The donuts are firm enough to pick up, but soft enough to feel it bend under the weight of your fingers. Watching them make the donuts in the batter and fry them is a treat in itself, but it is also a testament to the amazing taste that comes next. I am a sucker for the plain donuts as well as the plain ones with a chocolate frosting. Oh yes, the frosting...the frosting they put on their donuts, I think there are 5 or 6 different kinds total, is also amazing! The chocolate is actual "melt-in-your-mouth" kind of chocolate, not some cheap sugar infused kind that you find on cheap cakes. Biting into a Duck Donut is glorious!! The texture, as mentioned early, is just right and it just tastes so good. It's hard to describe perfection, so forgive me for my lack of words. My first time there I easily downed about 7 donuts, took a breather and downed another 3. There is something amazing about a simple donut done right. There's nothing fancy, nor colorful or dramatic about their donuts. It's simple, down to earth donuts, but done RIGHT. I did not have the pleasure of walking into their store front, but while on vacation some friends every few days would snag a couple dozen. These were unlike any doughnut I've eaten before. I think regardless of what side you're on of the Dunkin Donut versus Krispy Kreme debate, you will love the innovative flavors and fresh texture of these doughnuts. I'm very partial to my favorite flavors, so when I saw a maple doughnut in the box, I was skeptical. This was by far the best doughnut I have EVER put in my mouth, only made better when I tried the maple with BACON on it. Yes, bacon makes everything better so you may be thinking, "that doesn't tell much," but OH MAN...this opened a whole new doughnut door for me. Next thing I knew I was trying chocolate with bacon and my mind was blown. When I say the doughnuts were fresh, they were FRESH! My friend told me they were putting finishing touches while they stood at the counter. You never get that experience anywhere else. I could definitely tell with my first bite these were made that morning and what I loved is that they weren't too airy and disintegrate in your mouth, nor were they too thick and hard. My wife and I were in Corrola for a wedding. I decided to hit up Yelp to find some local places to eat. We visited DD the day we left. It was a Sunday, about 730am on the drive back home. We were the only people in line, which was nice since you have to choose the flavor and toppings. They do have a card to fill out which is a good idea for the cashier to reference. The store smells amazing!! You see the donuts being made right in front of you. The two ladies working were un real. They treated us so well and even gave us a free donut to eat while we waiting for ours to be made. We ordered 6 donuts, trying to taste all the different flavors. These donuts are hot and delicious. He was nice and greeted us on the way in and wished us a good day on our way out. Donuts: If you want to try out the different combos then a dozen is not enough. They aren't premade like DD, you order and you can ads different toppings like nuts, sprinkles etc. The donuts can be dipped in flavors like maple, lemon, strawberry, vanilla, etc. They're nice ams warm when you buy them so I recommend grabbing a nice hot/iced coffee and munching on some donuts while they're warm. They also live by the adage of do one thing and do it well. When ordering you choose how many donuts you want, then the fun begins! First you choose your adhesive (cinnamon/sugar, vanilla, lemon, orange, chocolate, maple, strawberry or peanut butter). Then they take your fresh baked donut, dip it in icing and then hit it with sprinkles (bacon, chocolate, peanuts, coconut or sprinkles). The prices are comparable to other chain places, but the end product exceeds expectations! PROS - warm fresh donuts, no frozen or prebaked website items here. - maple glazed with bacon - you get to choose the flavor combinations CONS - gets busy quickly.
