Duck Donuts is the unicorn of donuts. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise. I'll just start off by saying I typically hate donuts. The only donut I've ever previously thoroughly enjoyed is a freshly glazed Krispy Creme donut, until I visited Duck Donut. When I visited Duck Donuts, the line was out the door at 7:20am. The beauty of waiting in line is having time to look at and fill out an order form. They offer an array of toppings and you can mix it up anyway you want. At first glance, the donuts look like they're going to be hard and gross, but looks can be incredibly deceiving. It's not light and fluffy like Krispy Creme but equally delicious. Probably my favorite eating experience in the Outer Banks was the two trips we made to Duck Donuts. OMG. One of the best donut experiences I've had! First off, the line is out the door. You may wait an hour. Bring some water and wear sunscreen, because you have to be dedicated! You get a form and fill out what you want your donut order to be: Coating, Topping, and if desired, Drizzle! Yes, every donut is custom ordered. And the prices are really pretty reasonable too, just over a buck per donut. Our favorite breakfast/eat-it-warm donut was maple frosting with bacon topping. I also had strawberry with raspberry drizzle, blueberry with blackberry drizzle, peanut butter with salted caramel drizzle, and vanilla with rainbow sprinkles. I think that the bacon donut and the fruity-frosting donuts were my favorite overall in the end, but GOSH I would eat a donut from there every day if I could! read more

Delicious donuts! So satisfying. Had to stop and grab a box. Personally love the blueberry glazed ones. The line was out the door, but staff worked quickly to prepare the orders. Actually - because I was desperately trying not to gain 20 lbs while on vacation, my fiancé and I only had two donuts from here. Despite, those two little round, sweet o's of joy certainly made an impact on both of us! The cake of the donut is surprisingly dense and not too sweet, perfect for adding sticky caramel or chocolate drizzle. Enjoy anything from peanuts to oreo crumbles atop your fresh, hot Duck donut. Great iced coffee as well. Thoroughly enjoyed myself and was happy with the service here. This store is in a great location, right next to a smoothie shop and Harris Teeter. Donuts were pretty delicious here and reasonable priced at $1.20 per donut and $13 for a dozen. They are all just cake donuts served with your choice of glaze and topping. Maple and bacon was good and the lemon glaze made me a believer in lemon. The donuts are truly amazing, and the folks making the donuts were very sweet and welcoming. My only issue was that the cashier made a needlessly snarky reply when I asked a clarifying question. It surprised and sort of embarrassed me. I guess it was a simple question to figure out the answer to in retrospect (I was placing two orders and when she told me the price, I asked which order it was for. I could've just reasoned it out based on donut cost.) and I'm sure she gets tired of dealing with customers all day and we came in with a large group of (well-behaved) kids, so that was probably daunting. Not all it's quacked up to be. If you compare Duck Donuts to Dunkin Donuts I would give them 5 Stars easily. But, I have tried these gourmet donut shops in other cities across the country such as Jupiter Donut Company in Jupiter, FL, and The Little Donut Shop in Columbus, OH. Although Duck makes VERY good donuts, they fall short compared to other places that are similar to them. All of their donuts are the same, but with different glazes and toppings. The prices are very reasonable for what you are getting. I recommend this place, but keep your expectations tempered, and you will absolutely love it! read more

Just opened in Corolla. Now I don't have to wake up super early to go to the one in Duck. There is still a line but they have two donut making machines so the orders get done quicker. I'm not sure how I had been to OBX two times before getting around to trying these donuts. The first one I sunk my teeth into was a simple glaze dipped dude, but holy cow, was it good! We had to go back a second time just to try more. A tip - there are order forms on clipboards when you first walk in. I had no idea how the system worked and wandered up to the cash register attempting to spout off a million different variations to please the house of people I was bringing them back to. I do not like overly sweet, airy donuts at all. these are delicious! light cake donuts with a delicate crunchy crust and so amazing dipped in one of their 6 glazed or cinnamon sugar/ powdered sugar. husband and I got 6 to share. came back 2 days later for a doz! they are too good to not seriously indulge! UPDATE: taking one star down... after 3 visits in one week, these are still the best donuts ever. HOWEVER, the employees need to work on consistency. 2/3 times they got our order wrong and also the last time we went, the strawberry icing had a horrible sticky-gummy texture to it. Omg. These donuts were too good. Warm and Camry and melt in your mouth. It seemed really busy when we went in and there were a lot of people standing around. It wasn't very clear on how we should order (you have to choose your donuts from a sheet and take it to the cashier) you get a number like a deli and then they hand make each donut from your order sheet so cool! Was a little bummed to learn you had to online order ahead of time because of COVID-19, but very understandable... it was a little difficult and I had a little trouble getting it to take my order initially. Not sure how the Queue worked as it would not allow me to order ahead that way so I just booked out 2 days ahead on our last full day in Corolla. Like the subway of donuts except the bacon is higher quality, however youll be lucky if you ever get to try them somehow they are unable to handle an average flow of customers producing aboit 24 donuts every five mi utes which sometimes is a single customer making for a slow moving line that has you standing in the middle of the road. Always have to make our traditional run by Duck Donuts while on spring break. The Corolla store never disappoints and does a great job accommodating our son's peanut allergy. Just know going in that it may take up to 30 minutes to get your order on busy mornings. HOT MESS! The donuts are cooked fresh and made to order. We ordered the "Summer Assortment", which looked great, but what we got was a disgusting, off-putting mess. I don't understand the hype this store generates. I agreed to go here while on vacation at the insistence of our children. When we arrived, we were told the line to place an order was 35-45 minutes. I thought we would all agree to turn around and leave at that point but again, I was out voted by others in our group. After placing our order (and paying in full), we were then told it would be another 45 minutes to get the order out. Had we been told initially that the total wait time was 1.5 hours, I would have vetoed any plans to waste this much time on what amounted to dense, oil laden sugar bombs. Never again. read more
