Finding the perfect coffee shop is like this endless game of "this, not that" as in, "well, it has super comfortable seating, but no outlets" or "great tasting coffee, but the baristas are so unfriendly" or my personal favorite, "great space to get some work done, but why is everyone so loud?" Who among us has truly found the Holy Grail of coffee shops? Does it even exist? With that in mind, I came to Duck Rabbit with a plan to just purchase some beans to take home. This is a semi-weekly ritual I have, and I like getting beans from local roasters whenever I can. While I knew that Duck-Rabbit sold beans in the Cleveland area, I suppose I never put it together that they actually have a brick and mortar coffee shop. Therefore, I was kind of surprised when I stopped in to find it's a place I actually wanted to sit and stay a while. Down to my experience, the barista working was actually very helpful as he saw I was looking at their bean selection. I liked that they had a paper listing of everything they offer with the flavor notes, how the beans are processed, and where they originate from. As a visual learner, I much prefer this over someone just rambling off the details. I was easily able to find what I was looking for based on the specs provided, and the barista even noted that I could receive a free cup of coffee with my purchase. Well, in that case, who could resist? There was a glass cake stand with pie right in front of me, and since I had a book in hand, I opted to stay and enjoy my free cup of coffee. This is where I sort of fault Duck-Rabbit, as the seating isn't quite to my preference. They have these long, almost industrial style tables with metal chairs, which aren't the most comfortable. Although I like the idea of looking out the window while enjoying my coffee, I found that the height of the tabletop was just slightly too high for the chair provided, making not so optimal for reading or doing work. I wish they had some more comfortable chairs, or alternative seating options. The other downside is that they didn't have any creamer or half and half, only regular milk, which is a huge deal breaker for me. I'm a strictly whole creamer gal, and nothing else will do. However, since they had already served up my cup of coffee, I decided to bear with it. Truth be told, this coffee was darn good. It had a deep flavor profile without being too bold or bitter, and dare I say, it was even tasty without the creamer, which I have never found in any other cup of coffee. This combined with the homeade pie, provided by a local independent baker, really topped off my Sunday afternoon. So few coffee shops or even bakeries even offer pie by the slice, so this was a total win for me. So while Duck-Rabbit doesn't have the coziest seating, I can't fault the quality of the experience solely on that, and truth be told, I'm already looking forward to the next time I can sit and enjoy a cup of well-roasted coffee and pie. Is Duck-Rabbit my Holy Grail of coffee shops? Not quite, but it's definitely received high marks for quality. I love the space! It isn't big in terms of a seating area, but it is really nicely built out for what it is. There is a nice counter seating area facing the street. There are four stools along the window. The table height is a bit high for laptop use, but it is fine for reading or conversation. There are also three stools facing the roaster. There is whole milk and almond milk available. I chose to have an almond milk cappuccino ($4.50). Even for take away my drink was served with nice basic milk foam art. Cal's coffee is certainly dynamic, where different flavors shine through with various brewing methods. Cream and sugar are not required, but there in case you want to sweeten up your cold brew. The Colombian coffee - Penderisco - is my absolute favorite pour-over option and the house espresso is chocolately, where it feels like quite the mid-afternoon treat to get you through the day. Delicious, smooth coffee. I've been pretty impressed with the CLE coffee scene lately. Rising Star, Six Shooter Coffee- they're great coffee places. I was definitely excited though when I heard that Duck Rabbit coffee was opening a location! I first discovered this coffee at the Taste of Tremont last year. We were intrigued, so we bought a bag of their beans. And it was definitely legit and good. So, when we heard that they opened a storefront in our neighborhood, of course, we had to go! It's a cute space- it's located in the building right next to VTR. They have a couple of tables with stools for those who want to do work, and have some nice soothing coffee shop music playing in the background too. Now, I'm not a frou-frou coffee drinker. I don't care for turtle lattes or essentially coffees that are loaded with cream and sugar. Thus, my review of the coffee is for those who like going to coffee roasters for well, their actual coffee. I got a pourover of their baraka buna. And wow, it was good. Smooth, rich flavors, no aftertaste- a delicious pourover. I judge my pourovers by 1.) how smooth they are, and 2.) if I can drink them black because they're THAT flavorful. If I have to dilute a pourover with milk- well, that's just a waste. Duck-rabbit though, they know how to make a good pourover, and their coffee is just really really good. You can definitely taste the flavor notes as well- so you know, it's a good cup of coffee. And yes, I drank that pourover black. It was THAT good. We bought La Union beans as well- we're pretty excited to make it at home. Located right next to Forest City Brewing, this little coffee shop is relatively unknown compared to other craft roasters in Cleveland like Rising Star, Pour or even Six Shooter. I came here on Saturday morning and was greeted by friendly baristas. The interior had a bright, clean, industrial feel with the coffee roasting machine located in full view. There is free wifi so while there is limited seating (about 6 seating spots across two long tables), it's a place where you can sit down and relax for a bit. Given how quiet it is, definitely conducive for studying or getting some work done. I ordered the pour over coffee. It was strong and tasty, filled to the brim. I ordered two cups while I worked and had a nice caffeine buzz going. Will definitely be back for this delicious cup of joe. read more

I am going to try it again, I promise. I was really really really excited for this visit, because of the hype that his shop commanded, as well as the reviews I was seeing all over the internets. There was a little bit of a wait when we arrived, and there was only one person working. I'm cool with that. I came from Youngstown for a day in Cleveland, and I waited months to get to Duck Rabbit. I could wait a few more minutes. We finally got our drinks 15 minutes later (there was only one person in line ahead of us, they only got 1 drip coffee). There were two of us. We each got one drink. The macchiato was well prepared and properly steamed, but the espresso must not have been on point. I can't place the taste, but it was just...off. Like a strong woody taste. I don't know what coffee they were serving on espresso, but they may want to re-think the origin for milk based drinks. It didn't mesh. I still finished it, but I wasn't in love. Maybe I had built up my expectations in anticipation, but it left me disappointed. The real let down was the filter coffee. It was a Guatemala, and they had origin notes and tasting notes available. There was no depth to the coffee, it hit "flat." It was thin, with no complexity and very generic tasting. None of the notes matched my coffee. Like I said, I'm going back. There is no way that this much buzz is created around a cafe, to have it fall flat like this. I'm just hoping that my next visit blows my socks off. read more

A place with character. I visited Duck Rabbit Coffee for the first time on a Saturday morning before 10am with a friend. Since it was a hot day out I decided to get a cold coffee brewed with an Aeropress. The cold coffee was like many cold coffees, with little to no brightness (aka, acidity). The cold coffee, however, was clean, refreshing, crisp, and nutty with a light to medium body and pleasant aftertaste. The barista took extra time to entertain my questions and provide helpful information on how to brew the same coffee at home. If you have questions about their coffee or how to brew better coffee at home ask the barista who will be delighted to answer your questions and provide helpful suggestions. The limited seating disappointed me. I think they have a total of 7 or 8 seats and my friend and I had to sit on a concrete bench right in front of the area where guests make their orders. As I read most of the negative reviews of this outstanding coffee roaster they all strike the same note: "Duck Rabbit - you just aren't what I want you to be." Sorry y'all but I really don't care what furniture your caffeine fantasy life is filled with. If you knew anything about speciality coffee you'd be giving this place 5 stars until you got a blister on your pointer finger! This roaster is amazing!! Wake up!! Delicious beans fresh roasted and sold mostly for take home for people who drink good homemade coffee. Sorry that there isn't a couch to sit on while you sip your sugar and cream concoctions and make clever conversation. Frankly, I'm sorta glad you aren't hanging out in there when people who really love this delicious coffee come in for a cup or a bag. The place is cool in my opinion. The staff knows a lot and has always been helpful. If the roasting machine is too loud go to Starbucks where they have never even seen a roaster and they have lots of seats and clever people conversing. But stop down rating Duck Rabbit for caring more about the coffee than they do the upholstery. Like so many other people have shared- it's a gem. So...I always wondered when a new coffee place would open that would challenge Rising Star. And boom. Here it is. Industrial meets, "coffee production cool" in this insanely good coffee joint. I always love the look and feel of a working coffee lab. Limited, bar top style seating. In fact, only 7 seats in the place. But the coffee delivers. $4.50 for a medium whole milk latte. It is nice to see more businesses invest in this area and not leave Velvet Tango Room hanging. 2 thumbs way up. read more

Great hidden gem! The coffee is on par with any of the other local coffee shops around the area and may be even a few quarters cheaper. Nice location for those who frequent Columbus road to get in/out of downtown since there is always a lot of parking if you're just trying to grab a cup to go. They do not have any electric outlets though so if you're planning to use a laptop make sure to charge up first (I learned the hard way...)! Aside from no outlets I also wish they had pastries or bagels or at least something to munch on/enjoy with a cup of coffee.
