The drinks: the first two shots were warm and strong. Not a good combo for almost straight alcohol. Burns going down. Would have preferred them chilled. The two larger drinks were cold :) my mad scientist drink was delicious. Although not sure what was in it. The cup blinks and comes with cute glasses. I'm sad though bc my partner said it's supposed to come with pop rocks. We also did not get any leis - which I believed to be customary. My gf's large drink came in a cute hula girl glass but tasted awful (in my opinion) The food: absolutely delicious! I got the jerk chicken nachos. The chicken is to die for. But way too much refried beans and not enough chicken! My gf's grilled chicken sandwich was average. Nothing to call home about. The service: while I feel bad for writing this : it's the truth. Their was only one waitress serving the entire restaurant/ bar. And she claimed to be on her second month. She knew nothing about the drinks or food. I asked several questions she just didn't know the answer to. She ran around like a chicken with its head cut off. Apologizing profusely. While it's not her fault - the restaurant should employ more waitresses. It was a busy night 7-10 tables and large groups. I asked her 4 times for an ice water and she kept saying she would bring it and a bag for our cups and tshirt. After we settled the bill I asked a 5th time for the ice water and she said she would get me a bottled water for free. Through frustrated clenched teeth I politely said "no thank you. My first trip here was my freshman year of high school while on vacation with a girlfriend, and I have to admit, it's still exactly the same as it was then. I've never eaten there, but I always go for late-night drinks and dancing. The crowd is pretty diverse in age, from the young high schoolers to the 40+ crowd down on vacation looking for a good time. Just watch out for some of the "locals" who like to scan the crown before finding that "too drunk to say no" lady to dance with. Trust me, you don't want to be that poor lady. This place is a must visit when coming to St. Thomas. Mind you it is not a fancy place - its called a Shack after all. Everything is in order though and seemed fairly organized to me, the supercritical, organized virgo. The location is right off hwy 38, almost across from Redhook port. We were greeted by the friendly and forthcoming staff. We are not big on souvenirs, but loved the idea of drinks with cool mugs/cups to take home. My suggestion would be to go the first day you get to town and bring back your cup for refills as you will be paying about half the price for refills only. Pretty cool idea. They must have about 20 different concoctions to chose from. I tried the Dr. Feelgood, which was pretty neat with a variety of flavored vodkas and was served to me with a flashing glass and black-rimmed glasses to wear. I thought that was genius. You also get a small portion of pop-rocks to top your drink with and feel the fizz. :) Their menu is simple and straightforward - anything from burgers, salad and fish tacos. Their onion rings were very crunchy and not too oily, but definitely share those with someone. The fish tacos (3 tacos) came with very big chunks of well seasoned mahi, mango - lime or pineapple sauce, a side of black bean/ corn salsa, romaine lettuce and tomato. The tacos were not the best I had in St. Thomas, but a 6 out of 10 in my book. For two specialty drinks with take home cups, onion rings and 2 fish tacos we paid $45.00 excluding tip. read more

Went here on the recommendation of some friends while we were visiting the island. Wish we would have gone in the evening, I hear that's much better. Staff was kind of friendly, but I get the feeling you have to be a local to get the special attention they were getting ;) We ordered drinks and a couple of appetizers...calamari...meh, nothing to write home about and I have to say the fun drinks were very bland and not at all strong. I think I had my expectation built, but the location is just strange. In all honestly, I'm not sure I would recommend to anyone hanging around there at night...seemed a little sketchy and all of the locals told us NOT to go out at night. I don't know, maybe I would try it again the next time I'm there. It was small and cozy and had really cool decorations...maybe the nightlife there is superb and fun!!! Fun place with a variety of crazy drinks (pay the up charge for the souvenir ceramic glasses!) and decent food. Preferred the chicken sandwich much more than the burgers. Awesome guacamole. Did not have the fun experience people seem to be talking about at Duffy's. A) This is a party bar. If you are not wanting to drink cheap drinks, and get drunk with tourists...this is NOT your place. B) The music is loud. Even at 3 in the afternoon. There was absolutely no talking to the people beside us. I am all about fun island music but when your waiter can not hear your order after the 4th time maybe you should lower it a little. At least in the day time. The people beside us and around the restaurant seemed turned off by this aspect too. C) We called ahead to see if our vegetarian/vegan diets could be accommodated. The man on the phone was very friendly and told us to head on down for the "best veggie burgers on the island". These burgers were definitely frozen, and quite terrible. We tried ordering some of their tacos (which looked great) without meat and just the veggies, beans, plantains, and rice (even for the same price)...and we were informed by our waitress (with a very blunt NO) that it could not be done. In addition, the guacamole was also not fresh and extremely bland. NOT veggie friendly. D) Our waitress was rude and clearly did not want to help us out at all. We never got the waters we asked her 3 times for (probably due to the loud music). D) I am giving Duffy's a 2 instead of 1 star because their painkiller (which was on special that day) was pretty awesome and cheap. read more

My sister got married on the island, then we took a boat on the Caribbean, then we came to eat dinner at Duffy's - a restaurant in a parking lot. It was so much cooler than it sounds. I'm not sure where all of the positive reviews are coming from but my experience was not that impressive. Ordered the tacos that seemed like the signature dish and it was sub par at best. Wasn't seasoned well and the beans were stale tasting. I was hungry but didn't finish it. To top off the food, the waiter accidentally overcharged us $30 for the food. How the fuck do you do that!?! Anyway, accidents happen so when I call the "manager" he was no help. Apparently, he had just started from one of the other employees but he was adamant in giving me dumb excuses..."it was busy" (it wasn't), "this happens sometimes", really, because the waiter just said this never happened before you walked up. Terrible customer service and got the feeling me questioning him to ensure my card wasn't charged was annoying him. GET THE SHIT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME and I won't be! Having been to the Duffy's location on St. John years back and having a really great time, I was looking forward to spending some time at this location. This St. Thomas location in the Red Hook area is basically a small bar which spills out into a surrounding strip mall parking lot. Arriving late on a Friday night we were hoping for a bite to eat and a few drinks. What we ended up with was an overly way too nice waitress to the point of being fakely annoying. The drinks were over priced and many of the themed drinks tasted like you were eating about 15 pixie stix at one time. Their catch is to sell you the drink mug to jack the prices up a bit more. I ordered the half pound barbque burger. What I got was a burger which looked like a firehose had been used to pour on the bbq sauce. HazMat should have been called in to clean some of it up. Went back a few nights later for a second chance and was just as unimpressed. The bartender almost appeared to be a bad act.. The whole place just had a weird vibe. Obviously mostly a pit stop for cash heavy tourists and a few locals looking for some opportunity. If you want a really way too sweet drink in an overpriced mug, then this is your place. If not, there's better things to do in the area. I only flagged it as a sports bar because they had a few cheap sports banners strung around. Too expensive to be a dive bar. read more

I love Duffy's! Prices are outstanding. Great bar food, awesome drink menu, quick and friendly service. They have really good specials, too. Wednesday's are a must for lobster night. And they know how to throw a good party, with all the best music to keep your feet dancing all night long. They do have a small bathroom if needed. All I ask is, when you visit, two things: 1). Tip your bartender and your servers; 2). DO NOT (please) leave your cigarette butts and your empty cups all over the parking lot and the stairway across from the bar where all the smokers convene. I DRANK OUT OF A MONKEY And a parrot and pirate skull for that matter. Behold, Duffy's...the kind of the souvenir glass. As soon as you sit down in this shack in the middle of a parking lot you start to wonder why people like this place. Then the 'mood adjusters' and the drink menus show up and you try to take in the 30 or so concoctions from painkillers to mai tais to bushwhackers. After a few sips, a few warm breezes, and a glace or two at the stars above and you start to think...yeah, I can have a good time in a parking lot. The food is decent for bar food and I'd recommend sticking to burgers. Avoid the conch fritters, but definitely get the amazing corn fritters. They taste like deep fried cream corn and are making my mouth water just thinking about them. It's definitely a night time destination and you get a mix of locals, tourists, young, and old. There are some hotties here, but you'll also see pale, floppy Midwestern arms jiggling to Earth Wind and Fire. Hmm...better order another painkiller. :) read more

So we came for ladies night Wednesday which we were really looking forward to. I read the reviews, checked the menu and it all looked great. My group and I was visiting from Florida and it was our last night there so we wanted a nice local dive bar. We show up- - we had to clean our own table because it was filled with beer bottles, got crap from the bartenders because we asked for napkins to clean our table, had to get our own menus, and waited for a good 15 minutes and STILL didn't get any service nor were we greeted from anyone. Oh Duffy's... I have been to Duffy's twice. The first time was for dinner and drinks, (I got the veggie burger and couldn't finish it it was so big - yummy), and had two drinks, one of which was so fantastic that I got it again the second time around. There are three dozen or so VERY interesting cocktails on their drink menu and I will recommend four (though I'm sure there are more good ones) and give a thumbs down to one. Lime in de Coconut - My favorite drink. Yummy yum yum yum. Guavaberry Smash - A little sweet for my taste, but a girlfriend really liked it and my boyfriend's mom thought it was delightful. The Booty Call - My boyfriend's dad ordered this drink, and it was very good - rich though, so I probably would only drink one. Pirate's Painkiller - a strong drink that doesn't taste strong, and even though it is somewhat inconsistent, I'm recommending it anyway. the "Boooooooo" in my experience was the Tiki God Rum Punch. It was sweet at first, but then had a strange aftertaste that was almost like eating brown sugar or a tootsie roll after a glass of orange juice or something. Not good. Do not do it. Aside from the food and drink, Duffy's is a one-of-a-kind restaurant. It's situated in the middle of a parking lot in Red Hook with outdoor seating and a tiki hut-type structure for the bar. The servers "lei' you when you are seated, and adorn you with all sorts of stickers and plastic "jewelry." Sometimes a little figurine will appear in your drink, or on the pineapple in your drink, and little flags that say "Duffy's Love Shack" show up throughout your time there. It's not my bag man. I get the parking lot "it's cool cuz I'm in the island mon" idea, but it's not for old farts for SURE! Over 40 and not having a crisis? Pass. Loud as HELL and just completely unnecessary in general. On the other hand this could be a 5 star place if you like marginal food, super loud music, and uncomfortable seats. Anyone my age or older had the "get me out of here" look on their faces. If you don't want to look like a stick in the mud and want to leave something that makes you feel uncomfortable then you may want to not go in the first place. Thats who I'm writing this for. On the other hand.... Lou V and Lana B's reviews will tell you what you are in for if you want the things they write about. Plus they are "ELITE" and must be right. Plus.... I hate to give any place 2 stars it really should be more but I'm trying to get my "elite" status and If I don't occasionally rate someone lower the Yelp system won't value my reviews as highly. Yelpers won't tell you this and I probably will be dinged for making this public but it's the truth... and isn't that what yelp is supposed to do? Democratize the review process? Not so much. "Regular" peoples reviews get "removed by the computer". I have been on yelp for a very long time and think this new Elite status thing is bogus but when you want your review to count you have to nail a few places. I'm giving them five stars. I had a great time here with my husband and two kids (22 & 15 years old). First, this place was recommended by many people when I told them where we were heading for vaca. When we arrived, I was sure the driver had it wrong. How could this be the place everyone was talking about? It's in a parking lot!! Well, let me tell you. We had a blast! Our servers were outstanding and fun. The drinks are imaginative and well made and the food? I was surprised! I loved everything we tried. We ate here twice in one day first snacks, then we left to do some shopping and came back for dinner and loved every moment we spent here. We bought shots for other tables and talked to them like we were all friends. That's the atmosphere Duffy's projects. However, if you're uncomfortable sitting in a parking lot, eating and drinking then don't go here because you would review it poorly when it doesn't deserve that. Great night of drinking, just be ready for anything. The bar is a shack type, in a parking lot. We went on a slower night (monday) after getting off the last ferry from St. John & had a great night. You get to keep all the glasses you drink from so it's a 2for1, drinks are about the same $$ as the rest after happy hour is over. Nick was our bartender he was super cool, friendly gave us good tips about other things to see/do on island. I wouldn't miss it, but know it's a bit touristy.
