Was passing through and saw this place on yelp!! Walked in was a little surprised to see a cafeteria style restaurant!! Thank God we tried it because we have been dying to find a reason to go the 4 hrs to get there again! Food was amazing and the iced tea was out of this world. Was looking for good SC bbq on a road trip and thought we'd try here. This place was sad and depressing. "All you can eat" buffet. Well, I didn't wanna eat much of it. Was really craving sc hash (iykyk) and theirs was basically thick sauce with some lumps of meat. Veggies were obviously from canned and drowning in a sea of yellow butter. Pulled pork was dry af. Fried chicken was soggy and bland. Zero seasoning or flavor to any of the food. You can tell who cooked it lol. I was traveling home to Jacksonville when I saw the Duke's Barbecue billboard on I-95 in South Carolina. Since it was the weekend after Thanksgiving I wanted something different. First of all, you turn left at the third light after you get off the interstate. The sign once you get off says turn left at the second light which is wrong! Also, the restaurant is not right off the interstate. So be prepared for a little bit of a hike to find it. But at least there were signs everywhere so you won't get lost. They had a drive-thru which was nice. The service at the drive-thru was good. I was so excited to eat some Carolina Barbecue. But it was just average. This was my first time having a mustard-based BBQ sauce. I do like mustard but was not a fan. I just felt it lacked flavor and zest that I'm used to in a barbecue sauce. The pulled pork was soft, pasty and tasted more cooked in a slow cooker rather than smoked over any fire. The hot sauce - wasn't. I actually preferred the fried chicken which lacked seasoning. Hush puppies were good but not great. I did like the corn nuggets. In fact, they were the best thing I had, but the wife didn't care for them. Drive thru rocks. I was working in Walterboro today. Decided I wanted BBQ for dinner. So the drive thru it was. This process only took a few minutes. I got the Barbeque Plate with Hash/Rice and Side. I was able to chose Mac&Cheese for 1 and Turnip Greens for the other versus the cole slaw that comes with it. Now they give me the bag and it's heavier then I expected. I thought they would just give me the minimum amount but when I got home the to go box was packed full of bbq,pork, hash/rice mac & cheese, 2 hush puppies. I only ate half of mine. It's more then I would have eaten had I gone inside to eat all you can eat buffet style. I was very impressed. $10 each and I had enough to have for lunch the next day. They were very friendly at drive through. You can't beat these guys. They take care of their customers. Oh and I forgot to mention that I asked for extra bbq sauce and it was in there without charging me extra. Highly recommend. They should be voted best drive thru experience. Variety - meats, sides, vegetables, desserts. Growing up in Oklahoma, I don't get much of my favorites in Ohio (fried okra, hush puppies) so I was happy to see these here, and done well! Great bbq sauces: I mixed the smoky bbq and the apple cider mustard together, then I dipped my Mac and cheese in it....yum. Also this place gives you a down-home country feeling, which is nice. The bad: food safety - being in foodservice management, I notice things whenever I go. Trash was being taken out through the dining room, the Mac and cheese was not up to temperature, no hair restraints, and bare-hand handling of drinkware (close to the rim), old food being dumped on top of new. They also use styrofoam here, which I'm strongly against, especially for a buffet. However they advertise themselves as "barbecue," but merely having a buffet with nothing of barbecue other than pulled pork in it doesn't a barbecue restaurant make. For me a barbecue without ribs, brisket, chicken or turkey just isn't a barbecue, and the only thing Dukes has to offer in barbecue is pulled pork; nothing else. Yes, they do have chicken, but only deep fried chicken, so when they advertise themselves as being a barbecue restaurant, I consider the advertisement as being false. It's an all you can eat restaurant so when you are ready to belly back up to the bar (and you'll want to, trust me), get in line and go through again. The food here is delicious and prepared in the true Southern style. Expect lots of salt, greens cooked with fatback, and vegetables cooked to death 'til they are mushy (that happens to be the way I love my vegetables so I was so, so happy)! Oddly enough, I thought their "famous" pork bbq was their weakest link! The fried chicken is where it's at! After one bite my stomach jumped up into my taste buds to give my tongue a high five. It was THAT good, people. Best fried chicken EVER! Rounding out the standouts were the collard greens, fried okra, macaroni pie (just like Grandmama's), brunswick stew / hash, and the hush puppies. The buffet seems small but it was very extensive. I can't remember everything that was on it but there was a great selection of sides and meat. The desserts didn't register with me as I filled up on more fried chicken and collards. The interior is nothing fancy but this place truly is a Diner, Drive-In and Dive! You literally pay first and get your paper plate to go through the cafeteria style line as many times as you like. You get your own drinks at the end of the line. Not tasty, I ate less than one serving. Also came with hush puppies (pretty good) and coleslaw (some of the best I've ever had at a barbecue joint, sweeter than most, and a healthy portion. My wife had the pork sandwich, which she complained had no barbecue sauce. I did get some of her homemade chips, they were pretty good, mostly crispy (a little soft in the middle), well-seasoned. Throttle Down MC Group had a motorcycle lunch ride to Dukes BBQ in Walterboro and We absolutely loved it!!! The ride was a straight shot from North Charleston to Walterboro via US-17S and SC-64 (if you ever want a scenic ride on a sunny Sunday afternoon). There was plenty of spacious parking when we arrived but the local churches were letting out and soon the restaurant was filled with patrons. That's a very good sign as far as I'm concerned because an empty restaurant is a sign of bad service, uncleanliness, rude employees or just bad tasting food. In my humble opinion of course. The decor was rustic and homely like you would find at Grandma's house (including the loaf of bread on the table- who's grandma doesn't keep a loaf of bread around??) You didn't have to wear your Sunday's Best but you had to mind your manners. I was told that the food here was great and true to form, Dukes BBQ didn't disappoint. This was Southern Comfort Food at it's best! Home cooked no frills, no foo-foo-lah, just stick to your ribs eats. I chose the savory onion hash poured generously over white rice, collard greens with smoked turkey neckbones, fried okra, Pulled pork with hot mustard vinegar BBQ sauce, and Crispy Golden fried chicken and a scoop of the smoked sausage rice. If I wasn't in good company, I would have gone for seconds or thirds. Our friends were raving over the hush puppies, onion rings, sliced beets and coleslaw ( I was too afraid the main items were not going to fit on my plate so I didn't get any) Everything was well seasoned and well cooked. Wait staff was friendly, polite, attentive and kept a watchful eye on the food and supplies so no one is left there standing around waiting for utensils, cups, ice, etc. They also kept the buffet line clean of spills and waste.
