My friend and i came in here on a Saturday for brunch. They said they could seat us at a table but it was only available for the next hour and a half. We didn't have a problem with that since we knew it wouldn't take us that long. However, I did start to get worried because the service was veryyyy slow. Once we finally got our orders taken, I ordered a beer and the Wagyu burger. She asked how I'd like the burger cooked and I said well done. The burger came out almost raw and I could barely eat it. A reservation never hurts. Of course, the main focus of any restaurant is the food. It's a pretty safe bet to say you won't be disappointed. The food was great! I had to try the "Proper Burger". Came here with friends for brunch. There's a cool, casual, and spacious bar atmosphere inside. Duke's has the best DC burger that I've tasted. Hands down. I ordered the Proper Burger with Fries and a Runny Egg. A literal explosion of flavors in my mouth. The sweet pickled onions taste amazing with the sauce and the angus patties. I added the runny egg to justify it as a brunch burger and I don't regret it at all because it tasted delicious. The fries were standard-- not bad but not amazing. The Shakshuka was awesome. It was a nice big portion. The spices in the dish created a great depth of flavor. The dish was super hearty. I've only had a few shakshukas but this one was definitely the best I've ever had. The proper burger tasted a lot better than the wagyu. The wagyu was pretty bland. Fries were also not great and pretty mushy, maybe ask for them to be extra crispy? I took another star off because of an experience I had which has absolutely nothing to do with our server who was so sweet. I've been to brunch a few times here now and am never disappointed. I prefer this location for the amount of space that's available but the DuPont one has a bunch of outdoor space since covid. I've also had the avocado blt which is pretty big! I definitely liked both but the burger is a classic and definitely my preferred choice if you're hungry. Another time, I watched my cocktail sit at the bar for 8 minutes (10 feet away!) while my ditsy server wandered off. I only got it after the manager asked what I was waiting on. My table still had empty dishes from earlier. Most staff seem checked out. On a recent visit, the manager stepped in, and things improved--but it took 17 minutes before anyone greeted me. Enjoyed a burger and fries here. We sat outside, which was a little cold. There were space heaters but they didn't turn them on (to be fair, we also didn't ask them to cut them on). The Proper Burger truly lives up to it's rep as one of the best burgers in DC! And all of the servers we've encountered have been fantastic --at both the Dupont and Foggy Bottom locations! It is huge (two patties) and super juicy (I always order mine medium and it always comes out perfectly cooked). The combination of the sweet and savory flavors is unique and craveable! The bun is tasty and not overbearing. And adding a soft egg takes it to another level entirely. My only criticism is that the burger needs a little more seasoning--- I always have to add salt. Our whole group from work piled on over here to celebrate our Boss's promotion. There were six of us, and everyone ordered either beer, wine, or water. I ended up being the odd man out, and got a Red Bull. Everyone shared crispy fries and we just sat around chatting the night away. This is no different than what we do at work. The crispy fries were unique in the fact that they used sea salt instead of regular salt. By the time they came around to take our dinner orders, I wasn't very hungry. I ended-up getting the Uncle Tony's chicken Parm sandwich for which I added avocado slices. I think that Wednesday nights must be their busy nights, because the place was nearly packed with patrons. I decide on the proper burger ( I was thinking this when i walked in). I can order it cooked rare or well done. Well done it is. I add the french fries. The man to the left of me is eating fish and chips with fries and they look too good to pass up. I order another Lager and the food arrives. Fries are hot and crispy. Burger is exactly as advertised. I came with 4 other friends on a Friday night and this place was PACKED. We made a reservation for 6:30 and were seated in the bar area where it seemed like everyone was walking on top of each other. It took a awhile to get service and our orders placed. We received our drinks 30minutes after we ordered and turn out our meal order was misplaced. An hour we were able to put our order back in and received complementary Mac and cheese, fries, and whiskey. I will say, the sandwiches, Mac and cheese, and fries were AMAZING! I got the torta and the chicken was crispy and flavorful. The Mac and cheese is absolutely heavenly. I highly recommend ordering that and their fries. I ordered the spicy aubergine sandwich, and wow, I was blown away. For $13.50, the sandwich was large, flavorful, well assembled, and made with extremely fresh ingredients. It's definitely enough to fill you up for lunch without any appetizers. A word of warning: not too many vegetarian options. First, big shout out to our waiter, Dominic! He saved our night and this business from getting a lower rating. The hostess was less than hospitable and was insistent on seating our party of five at a four top rather than a six seat table. My drinks were super delicious with proper amount of alcohol in them. I had the Blueberry Bourbon Lemonade and the Citrus Crush (made with orange juice) and highly recommend both. I ordered the restaurant's version of Mexican Street Corn for the table and the Truffle Mac & Cheese with Chicken for my meal. The street corn was ok but the cheese clumped together and my Texas dinner mates said it was not as good as the authentic street corn they get near their home. Now the truffle mac & cheese was the right choice! The dish had plenty of chicken and truffle oil just made the dish (presentation could've been a bit better)! I enjoyed every bite and refused to share. One of my dinner mates raves about the Waygu Beef Burger so give that a try as well. Truffle mac and cheese absolutely SLAPS and is worth the heartburn. I recommend getting it with bacon and also remind you to not forget to bring out the Tums afterward. Other menu highlights are the popular and highly rated proper burger (named best burger in D.C. so you know it's legit) and the corn elote. If you like cheese and you like corn, get the corn elote as an appetizer to share or even just as your main course like I did. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, and I've found that the outdoor benches are kind of uncomfortable and the service tends to be a little slow when seated outside. I'm really happy about the current revitalization of 2000 Penn, especially now with Duke's Grocery! This restaurant is located within the Market which is a very cool, indoor strip of bars and restaurants that has an outdoor feel to it due to it being built on the side of a building. Duke's has plenty of seating and the staff is super friendly. Our only complaint is that the brunch menu lasts until 4pm on weekends, and you can't order anything off their main menu until after that time. read more

(For $24)(Thank goodness I only got a single for $9 my partner is struggling to gussle his liter of mimosa down lol) I got the English breakfast (I wanted to taste it all)!-well it was all tasty but dry, in true Brit fashion ;). The eggs I requested over easy and got them over well, no biggie as I didn't even get to them. The white and black pudding sausages were tasty! I wish there were at least 2 bits to each but sadly only got 1 little itty bit. The mushrooms were dry, the white sausage was also interestingly dry, and I did request the beans on a side - thank goodness- they are good but in a sweet tomatoe sauce that I was glad to only taste. Over all an interesting brunch combo. He got the eggs Benedict with Canadian ham which were delicious (his words) with the said side of bacon and a full liter of mimosa- lol. The place is super cozy- there's an English phone booth on the side where we will get a picture !! For sure!! Have been wanting to try this place since I moved to the DMV. Im just mad I didn't try It sooner. Definitely one of those restaurants where everything on the menu is delicious. Our drinks the Vanilla Bourbon tea were so good and strong, but here's the catch, they didn't taste strong at all. It really felt like I was just drinking a refreshing tea. At $10 a tea, I felt that was really affordable for the area! We started with the truffle Mac and cheese. It was like fancy adult Velveeta; but I mean that in a good way! The truffle flavor made this addicting, plus the crispy baked top! I ordered the Earth to Sea Tartine. If you're a beet girl like me, get this! So good and interesting flavors that come together really nicely. I'm usually not interested in multigrain bread, but Dukes was amazing with sunflower seeds. After a long week of midterms, I was practically hanging onto my last brain cell. Feeling homesick and in need of comfort, my friend and I stopped by Duke's for a bowl of pho. After hearing all the hype about their pho menu, I knew I had to try it out but was still a bit skeptical about it. Turns out my skepticism was correct. My friend and I both ordered "All in Joint" with the mindset that it was going to be pho dac biet, or special combo pho. At first glance, the color of the broth was already off. The orange hue reminded me of bun rieu, crab noodles, rather than pho. I was thrown into a series of self-doubt after tasting the broth, and three words came to mind: Sloppy Joe sandwich. Everything tasted like a mistake. Even the noodles were not meant for pho (my friend's bowl had a mixture of pho noodles and vermicelli, but mine just had straight up vermicelli). Before anyone tries to correct me by saying "oh it was probably not meant to be pho in the first place", please open your eyes and look at the menu. Why would this item be listed as the very first one on the PHO menu if it was not meant to be pho? The menu should have just been named "Vietnamese dishes" if they wanted to serve dishes other than pho. The area near GWU is already lacking in Asian restaurants, and even more so for Vietnamese cuisine. I am utterly disappointed at the lack of respect and understanding for a dish that my people take several hours to prepare, and that is just for the broth! Dear management, please just remove the pho menu in its entirely if you are not going to hire chefs who can properly prepare it. read more

April 2022 - COVID Review: I came here with a bunch of coworkers for a work happy hour after we volunteered at a local event together. It's not super spacious but I appreciated that our large group was able to have an area sectioned off just for us. They even put a few hightops together for us so that they could bring out the trays of food. Our event organizer ordered a hummus platter, sliders, and "deconstructed" elote (basically corn with the elote toppings). I thought all of the food was delicious! The servers were pretty busy for a Saturday afternoon and the restaurant was fairly crowded as well. So it's understandable that our drink orders would take a bit of time. But overall I would be back again the next time I'm around! read more

My go to restaurant for when I want a delicious burger in D.C.--I almost always order the Wagyu Burger. No side is included with the burger and I usually order the truffle fries (really good but also an annoying surcharge for adding truffle oil to an already un-included side). My friends always love their Cuban sandwich. The pho they have is also authentic, fresh, and delicious. Good happy hour deals but often very limited ( e.g. one or two beer options). They also have a "Wagyu Wednesday" deal for a single paddy Wagyu Burger for $10. I tried the mac & cheese because I had heard rave reviews about it. Food did take about 25 minutes to come out, but that was because were busy. Once it came out though it is hands-down one of the best mac & cheese I've ever had. The truffle oil and the cheeses were perfectly blended together and every bite felt like home. We came here for Duke's "Tea Time" on Saturday - 90min all you can drink coffee/tea themed cocktails and had SUCH a fun time. Most of the cocktails are whiskey, but if you're not a whisky fan like me, there's also an espresso martini option. We all definitely got our money's worth with the drinks (lol). I ordered Pho and it was soo yummy -- lots of fresh herbs and the portion was huge! I also tasted the sweet potato fries and they were great.
