I really enjoyed coming to Duke's. The service was great and it was chill environment. Not too large of a space though so it can get a little noisy if you're sensitive to that. I order a wake up call which is there version of an espresso martini which I enjoyed! It sneaks up on you so be careful. We both order the wagyu beef burger and it was so good. Cooked very well so it was greasy which made it a little messy but the flavor was booming!! If I were to come again I'd add some toppings and wish there was more Duke's jam but that's personal preference. I was walking around DC all morning and needed to grab something eat. Unfortunately, most places I had a taste for were super busy for brunch. Then I saw Duke's Grocery in my Yelp search and remembering that I tried a burger of theirs years back and liked it, I decided to check them out again. Duke's Grocery was also quite busy, but they were able to seat me at one of their picnic outdoor tables. Since it was quite hot, I opted out for a bowl instead of their proper burger. I got the Cali Bowl, which sounded good on the menu but was a huge disappointment in reality. It was mainly arugula and maybe a spoon (max) of all the other ingredients. If I wanted to pay $14 for arugula only, I would have gone to a grocery store and bought bags of it. Also, I asked for a straw for the glass of water I was given, but only got the straw when I was getting ready to pay anyway. Plus, they brought an uncovered straw in a napkin. I know that some people forgot about covid, but that's gross regardless (and besides covid). And they keep their forks and knives out in the open. Not very sanitary in my humble opinion. I ordered the Cubano sandwich, friend ordered the Proper Burger, and I would not make a special trip to order either again. I've been hearing that Duke's Grocery is a must try in DC. Maybe I was crabby, maybe it was because it was cold but I dont get the hype. I ordered the Banh Mi with shrimp and chicken pate which I was excited for. I now know why everyone says to get one of their burgers. The banh mi lacked depth to it. The shrimp tasted good, but it was seasoned so much it kinda overpowered the dish. I also couldn't really taste the chicken pate on it because it was so thin which was a bummer (especially since all the reviews said the chicken pate appetizer was a must try). A friend of mine raved on and on about this place, and finally one random Monday night after a Happy Hour, we on a whim came here. The burger is what you come here for, but if you decide that you want to come for other items, you still won't be disappointed. It's very small and frequently crowded, so you do have to prepare for that. Otherwise, it's such great food. In addition to the burger, get elote or their burrata appetizer. We've visited since then during Sunday brunch, and they have beet soaked salmon and the brekkie burger, both of which are also amazing. After spending the weekend in DC, I wanted to stop for a quick brunch with three friends before heading back home to Philadelphia. A friend that lives in DC sent a list of options and Duke's Grocery stood out for it's awesome menu. We arrived shortly after 10 AM and we were seated right away! The place is small but very cute inside. We sat on the first floor, but there appeared to be an upstairs. Not sure what's up there, maybe more seating. We had a very friendly and attentive server. I ordered the burger, which was AMAZING. I added a few toppings making it a mouthful. We also got the truffle mac and cheese to share. This was incredibly cheesy and rich. Duke's Grocery and their sister restaurants are a few of my favorite restaurants in DC! It has been a while since I've sat down at a restaurant in DC due to COVID restrictions, and Duke's was the right place to break that quarantine. Due to a small kitchen, they only serve from the brunch menu on the weekend during lunchtime as well. However, their brunch menu includes all of their customer favorites and staple dishes, such as Proper Burger, Wagyu Burger, Truffle Mac and Cheese. With no hesitation, I would order the Truffle Mac and Cheese for the table. Their burgers and main dishes don't come with sides unless indicated on the menu. For instance, no fries with their burgers. This could be upsetting, except it means more room for other sides. They don't skimp out on the cheese nor the truffle oil, and the slightly broiled cheese just leaves a perfectly crispy cheese crust on the top. I'm not sure if they got rid of their brisket sandwich (it was not offered in their brunch menu). If they still carry this dish, please do yourself a favor and order it. First night in DC and we decided to check out this famed burger spot, off the recommendation of friends that lived in the area. It's a busy Monday night, and we waited an hour for our food, which was a bit of a long wait given our somewhat mediocre experience. We got the Wagyu burger, the Proper burger, and the Truffle mac and cheese, since these seemed to be the most popular menu items. We also got mocktails, which was pretty good! I will say that the portion size is pretty small given the price. Though I thought the taste was pretty good, the small portion sizes were definitely off putting after an hour wait. I will definitely be hungry later tonight :( Proper burger - 7/10. Best burger on the menu for sure, but why doesn't it come with fries? The toppings are great, would be an 8/10 if the portion wasn't tiny. Wagyu burger - 5/10. I would've liked to taste the wagyu more, but the bacon component was extremely overpowering. Also very small portion :( but good! Would be better if it was a bacon burger, but I was looking forward more to the wagyu. Truffle mac n cheese - 4/10. People rave about their Proper Burger, so I had to try it for myself after a visit to the National Zoo to see the pandas. I got there right as they opened at 11 am and it was a Wednesday, so it wasn't busy. I ordered the Proper Burger ($14) medium rare since the only choices were medium rare or well done. So of course medium rare. I also had them add bacon (+$3.5) and hold the sweet chili sauce. I didn't want anything sweet in my burger. And I ordered a side of fries which was an additional charge (+$3.5). Unfortunately my burger was well done instead of medium rare (as you can see from my picture). The fries were limp and soggy. Not very pleasant. It was a disappointing lunch since this place is supposedly known for their burger. I was just in LA last spring and the $7 burger I had at Amboy's Quality Meats was so much better. The chef-owner of Amboy knows his burgers. He hosts The Burger Show. And the fries should be double fried. The fries they served me were pretty terrible. Would have given this place 5 stars, but the hostess just didn't give the warmest welcome. I came with a party of 5, which included my baby in a stroller. Instead of making everything comfortable for us, she just had a lot of remarks about the stroller and how we needed to be on the second floor, and needed to have the stroller folded at all times. We get upstairs, literally each table had enough room for the stroller. I just felt like she could have been a lot nicer about the situation. The fooooood, WOW. It's cozy and feels like you are in a home (& probably was one at some point) Concept is fresh and farm to table. Our server told us they don't have a deep fryer which I thought was refreshing. We wanted to try some of the plates as starters to share & all of them looked good but we ordered the Truffle Mac n Cheese & Alba Burrata. The Mac n Cheese was quite decadent and tasty. Light breading on the Chicken with Capicola taking the place of bacon & there are many fresh toppings in there and they work well together. Visited Duke's Grocery after my friend recommended this place. I was driving down to VA from NY this past weekend when I stopped here for lunch. I ordered the Proper Burger based on his recommendation. It was a very hot and humid spring day, but I still opted to sit outside. The outside setup is real cute! Picnic style benches with tables under the outdoor seating setup. Employees were friendly! I ordered the burger to be cooked medium rare, but it came out a little more on the well side. The Elote was amazing and I highly recommend it. There was a ton of corn and the flavor was perfect. I had the Pastrami on Weck. There was so much pastrami; it was great! So I hadn't been back here in over a year. Even though I remembered it as having a REALLY great burger, I didn't actually remember HOW great it was until I bit into that medium rare Proper Burger with my side of truffle oil as my dipping sauce and decided that paradise is a place called Duke's Grocery. I am not joking when I say that THIS IS the best burger you will EVER bite into. But not really bite because what it really does is melt in your mouth due to the overproduction of saliva at just the smell of the burger (I'm literally salivating right now thinking about this magical burger). I'm excited I'll be moving slightly closer to that area so I should be coming WAY more often. The fact that it took over a year for me to come back makes me sad. There are too many regrets to look back on, so we will make 2019 better by eating here more often. Unfortunately (or fortunately) there's ALWAYS a wait and no opportunities for reservations so plan on that. I love their "You Get What We Give You, No Substitutes" attitude and honestly, you'd be a rude human to think that a substitute is appropriate or even needed. You clearly don't know what's good for you, so let Duke's figure it out for you and come eat here. They have happy hour 12-7pm, selected wines, beers and well drinks for $5. So I made use of that as well. Last but not least, we had the TO DIE FOR Truffle mac and cheese (since they don't do "sides" and there are no fries). 4 stars for a solid Dupont burger spot. When it comes to a good burger, DC has several good options. One of those options resides at Duke's Grocery (for out of towners: that is just the name of the restaurant). While I've been to the Foggy Bottom and Nats Park locations several times, I've had the most consistently good dining experience at the Dupont location. I went to Duke's for lunch a few days ago (note: during the COVID pandemic) to grab a socially distant lunch with a co-worker. While you can eat inside (and did when the world was normal), this location has several long picnic tables along with some regular tables set up as a patio out near the street. I checked in with the hostess outside and my coworker and I were taken over to our patio table. We then took a look at the menu via the digital route and decided to just go with the famous Proper Burger (this venue also has the impossible burger option). The burger comes with Gouda and sweet chili sauce (I also get bacon because of course) and generally lives up to the reputation (every so often it doesn't but a cook can't be perfect every night). The burger does not come with sides, but it is a good size to go along with a good taste and price. Overall, Duke's Grocery provides a solid burger. That along with the solid dining experience makes this place worth checking out when you are looking for a burger or just a meal and drink in the Dupont area. read more

Headed to the Dupont Circle location with a friend last night and had a little bit of a different experience. We were sitting outside so the service was definitely slower and it was difficult to get our waiters attention. The outdoor space is very cute and they have nice heaters so I didn't mind sitting outside on a chillier night. I always get the Moscow Mule from Duke's Grocery and it never disappoints. I like my mules with a lot of ginger beer and they use a great ginger beer as a base. I also ordered the Proper Burger on the gluten free bun for dinner, and while it was a good burger, the food took a while to come out so it wasn't super warm. We had an amazing lunch here. Upon entering, we were immediately seated. The hostess was welcoming and very sweet. There is indoor bar seating and outdoor seating as well. Our server and all the employees here are super friendly, hospitable, and attentive. The ambiance is laid back and it's cozy in here. The restaurant and restrooms are clean. Forks, knives, napkins, condiments, and water are within reach. I love their lay out, makes everything really simple. The dishes we tried were incredibly delicious. Simply put, the food here is absolutely delicious! For my first visit here I decided to try their proper burger and it was one of the best burgers that I have had. The melted Gouda, garlic aioli and angus patties all blends perfectly to make a truly fantastic burger. My only wish was that they used a sturdier bun as the burger is quite large and could use the extra support. The white truffle mac and cheese that we shared was also incredible as the blend of the cheeses in this dish pairs perfectly with the truffle oil. To be quite honest, the food here could not have been much better. There are really only two reasons this score is a four out of five and not a five out of five. The first is that the prices here are extremely high. $14 for a burger with no fries (or other side) and $13 for a small skillet of mac and cheese is honestly a bit much. Additionally, the waiter completely forget about our table, never brought us refills or checked on how we liked our food and did not visit our table (after taking our orders) until forty-five minutes after we were done eating. It took almost a year of living in DC for me to try Duke's, but ever since I had their famous Proper Burger, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. No modifications are allowed, but thankfully it caters to my pickiness with no tomatoes and easily removable arugula. The patty is so juicy and tasty, their sauce is like crack, and the pickles and pickled onions add a nice crunch to the whole thing. My friend who is allergic to cucumbers even asks for extra pickles on the side - they're that good. The burger doesn't come with fries, unfortunately, but the elote skillet is a delicious substitute addition to the meal. Typically elote is eaten as a corn on the cob, but this is definitely the best version of it that I've found in the DC area so far. It's so flavorful and has just the right amount of cotija cheese and chili sauce. Duke's also has happy hour 12-7 but their draft beer selection is pretty limited. Heard good things about Duke's Grocery a long time ago and finally had a chance to check them out with my roommates. It was pretty busy on Saturday around 1pm but we were seated within 20 mins. The interior is pretty cool and cozy, and they had lots of British decor spread throughout. I ordered the Bruch Burger (previously known as the Proper Burger) and potato boxty. The burger was freaking awesome. It had two smashed patties and was full of sweet flavor. After eating it, I didn't feel overtly bloated which is a massive plus. He is super nice so for him to say that says a lot. We tried multiple times to go here for dinner and third time was our charm. We were staying at the Lyle Hotel which is only a few blocks away. On our last night in DC, we decided to just try and were able to be seated. Two times prior we had tried to call to make a reservation and the host rudely would say things like, 'I can't really tell you the truth wait because it is really busy.' Even the night we did go, the host, a different person than the rude phone interactions, said, "did you make a reservation?" And after saying no, she says "well I can try to sneak you in" but in a tone that said we were inconveniencing her. Who wouldn't want customers right now?! The server seemed too busy and never brought us more water. He seemed tired or overwhelmed. I also didn't like that they charge $15-18 for a burger or sandwich and don't include a side. They can easily include a small salad which costs them pennies. As for the food- I ordered their pastrami/turkey/salami with no cheese or mustard and it was delicious. It tasted like an traditional Italian deli sandwich on a delicious and freshly baked baguette. My husband had their "cuban" which they shouldn't be calling a "cuban" because it is not! He did love it and the breaded chicken was so thin it almost tasted like breaded fish. We each only ate half and took the rest in a take out box. My brother had their burger which he devoured. We went for lunch Friday and had such a great time we ended up going back for Sunday brunch. The lunch menu was diverse but we were in the mood for sandwiches. The burger I got was perfectly cooked and had tons of flavor from the aioli and red onion. My partner opted for the grinder and he was extremely satisfied with the amount of meat packed in. I was in Washington DC recently for a work trip and as per usual, turned to my trusty Yelp Community to point me in the right direction for lunch one day. Although there were many choices, Duke's Grocery in Dupont Circle became clear. I got there right when they opened and found a decent parking spot on the street which was great. I was the first one in the doors and was greeted by a smiling face and took my seat by the window in the corner so I could see the whole place. I ordered The Proper Burger with a side of their famous Bacon Jam. I figured if you have a burger on the menu called The Proper Burger, it's got to be legit! It was for sure, quite possibly one of the best burgers I've ever had and do me a favor if you go there, order the bacon jam. You won't regret it. Also did I mention they have a great beer selection? Yes it was 11:30am and I'm "working" but a burger and a La Fin de Monde? I couldn't resist. Don't judge. Great job Duke's, I appreciate the warm welcome and great service. read more

Such a hip and very cute place! I came here on a weekday with my friend for dinner and it was pretty packed! Heard about their famous proper burger. After taking a bite, it's evident that the quality is AMAZING! It tastes super fresh and high quality meat! Very juicy, very saucy and messy! Even though I was sad that the burger did not some with a side, the quality exceeded my expectations. Also, I was very happy with the happy hour & $5 bottle of beer!!!!!! Can't beat that price in DC!
