I went with my friend and it was loud. The place is small and it can quickly be filled and be super loud. I got a little overwhelmed. The food was really good. I enjoyed the shakshuka that came with naan. I like my shakshuka with the texture of the veggies but this was all blended like a sauce. It was good. My friend had the chicken and waffles and the waffles were a little too crispy for my liking but the chicken it was pretty good the honey chilli sauce. Walked through a couple blocks of heavy winds, ice and snow to get here after a Google search said that the proper burger was the burger to get! so I walk in party of one please, they seat me up against the rail at the window. I sit there for a good five minutes or so I figured out what I want. I'm waiting. The server is just chilling talking it up but the. here they go. They sit a white girl in the same section I'm in and he goes right to her gets her drink and breezes right past me. Unfortunately, service was extremely slow when we went on a Sunday afternoon. Despite there not being many tables, we had to flag down multiple servers just to get our order in and our check. In terms of food, what we ordered was ok. Bangers and mash: bangers were good, mash was too pureed and thin for my liking. I wanted their Sunday Roast but they said it was still marinating and wouldn't be ready until 4pm - which was disappointing. Sunday Roast should be served all day! I did order the Yorkshire pudding which is available as a starter/shareable dish served with butter, which was a bit weird to me because I'm used to having it with gravy (preferably as part of Sunday Roast), but I was down to try it. Unfortunately it was so overcooked that it was slightly burnt and hard and was way too salty. Overall, I was really disappointed. My wife and I tried the original Duke's for restaurant week. The menu showcased some delicious dishes. Among them the: Truffle Mac n Cheese, Local Corn 'Elote Locos,' Proper Burger, Posh BLTA, and Strawberry Shortcake. We both liked the corn the best. The burger is very good, was cooked to order, and is definitely one of the better ones we've had. The BLTA was very fresh and included generous helpings of all the ingredients. In fact, the portions of all the dishes were very large. We interacted with a few different staff members while we sat at the bar on the second floor and everyone was pleasant. I visited in 2022 with a friend and it was a bit underwhelming. The proper burger was not seasoned at all and depended on the sweet chili sauce for flavor. This is unacceptable and a burger should stand on its own without the need for a sauce. Would not recommend this place for brunch. The avocado on the avocado toast was quite obviously the packaged stuff you get from the grocery store. The waitress was also not pleasant to interact with and was not accommodating with our very reasonable requests re: how we wanted our eggs cooked. The music was also a bit loud on the patio. The apps were good - the Mac and cheese was solid and If you like pickles/pickled things, the pickle bucket is a great option to try. Can't go wrong with roasted corn. Wagyu burger had lots of flavor and was just the right height where I could eat it comfortably. Patties are juicy and cheese is nicely melted. I would recommend the chocolate cake over the strawberry shortcake as the strawberry one wasn't as soft/fluffy as I thought. It had more of a sponge cake texture. We tried the salmon toasts, the truffle mac and cheese, and the ABLT. Far and away the mac and cheese was the standout. Warm and gooey, crispy toasted cheese on the top, and a great infusion of flavor from truffle oil. It comes served in a hot cast iron skillet, keeping it warm and delicious. They had a nice crunch and was a wonderful replacement for fries. The spicy aubergine sandwich will satisfy any hunger. The sandwich was massive, rich, and crunchy. I highly recommend this beast. We recently stopped by Duke's Grocery for lunch on a long weekend afternoon. We put our name on the list once we got there and were advised there was a wait of 45-60 minutes for a table. This was okay for us and we walked around the area to kill time. Luckily on checking with the maitre d' a few times, we were able to get a table after 30 minutes of waiting. We were seated outdoors in one of the roadside cabanas. Service was a bit lacking and we had to wait a long time to place our order and then to get the food. We came to know later that they were short staffed and one of the bartenders was doing double duty waiting tables and servicing the bar too! But the food made up for the slow service. We ordered the following: Latkes - 3 giant sized latkes and enough for sharing! They were well made and tasted good :) Proper Burger - The patty was cooked well and went well with the brioche bread, sauces, pickles and gouda cheese. Impossible Burger - with add on bacon - tasted really good and the bacon added extra flavor to the meal! Wagyu Burger - medium rare worked well for the meal. I wish I had substituted the cheese with Gouda but everything was good! All the dishes were cooked perfectly and was worth the wait! I found Duke's Grocery while walking around downtown Washinton, DC in search of lunch. Just a note it is not a grocery store, but an amazing, confortable, quaint restaurant sunggled in between many restaurants there on restaurant row. The staff was extremely accomadating in providing seating both indoors and outside, while observing all the COVID compliant guidelines. Our temperature was taken, as we decided to eat indoors. WARNING: High in carbs and fats that will make you food coma afterwards... I wish I read the reviews and got the Proper Burger since I hear it's rated one of the best burgers in DC. Sadly, I decided to get the truffle mac n cheese because I love truffle and it makes a perfect combination with mac n cheese. The mac n cheese was served on a skillet and the top of the dish was baked to perfection. Love the colors and I knew it was going to be good. It was super cheesy and the truffle oil definitely enhanced the mac n cheese. Also loved the cheese blend as it was very good. My only two issues with this dish - overall, it was pretty expensive for a small skillet of mac n cheese - like $14 or $15. I would probably recommend this as an option to share with another person, not something to get for just yourself. I found myself pretty hungry afterwards. Additionally, the bottom of the pan has a thicccc layer of oil. It was hard to eat the mac n cheese touching the pan since I could just taste dripping oil. Would prefer if it was mixed in better... Don't think I'll get this as an entree again, but happy to share it with other people if I go with some friends again! read more

This place has a wide variety of hamburgers to choose from. I'm a huge fan of their Mac n' cheese and casual atmosphere. Personally, I prefer to sit outside as opposed to inside but either choice is cozy. I recommend this spot for folks who are having dinner or lunch with friends. You can catch me ordering their Waygu burger and cocktail or an Austin east cider here. Anytime I am in town I am sure to make a pitsop at Duke's. I am giving 4 out of 5 stars due to the time it takes to receive food after ordering. I was walking around DC all morning and needed to grab something eat. Unfortunately, most places I had a taste for were super busy for brunch. Then I saw Duke's Grocery in my Yelp search and remembering that I tried a burger of theirs years back and liked it, I decided to check them out again. Duke's Grocery was also quite busy, but they were able to seat me at one of their picnic outdoor tables. Since it was quite hot, I opted out for a bowl instead of their proper burger. I got the Cali Bowl, which sounded good on the menu but was a huge disappointment in reality. It was mainly arugula and maybe a spoon (max) of all the other ingredients. If I wanted to pay $14 for arugula only, I would have gone to a grocery store and bought bags of it. Also, I asked for a straw for the glass of water I was given, but only got the straw when I was getting ready to pay anyway. Plus, they brought an uncovered straw in a napkin. I know that some people forgot about covid, but that's gross regardless (and besides covid). And they keep their forks and knives out in the open. Not very sanitary in my humble opinion. The shrimp tasted good, but it was seasoned so much it kinda overpowered the dish. The burger is what you come here for, but if you decide that you want to come for other items, you still won't be disappointed. It's very small and frequently crowded, so you do have to prepare for that. Otherwise, it's such great food. In addition to the burger, get elote or their burrata appetizer. We've visited since then during Sunday brunch, and they have beet soaked salmon and the brekkie burger, both of which are also amazing.
