What a great little shop. The pastries and cakes all looked incredible (we got a few from the big case and everything was so good!). I also picked up some snacks as well as what looked like a loaf of bread with walnut toppings or something like that. I tried asking the friendly gentleman behind the counter but our language barrier prevented me from knowing exactly what that delicious concoction was properly called. (Español abajo) I do not recommend this bakery. I purchased two cakes, one marble and one Tres Leches. The cakes were 30 minutes late, one had the wrong name, the words were not centered, and the image was cut off (see pictures for details). The Marble cake was decent and no major complaints. The Tres Leches (Encanto) was dry and no sign of it being a Tres Leches. It was most likely a plain vanilla cake. When we went back to ask for a partial or full refund, the older gentleman that originally took our order was rude and told us to leave. He said we had underpaid for the cake (which he personally quoted us for with not indication that we were getting a discount) and therefore we did not have any rights ("if a person will pay [full price] and pays, then they have all the rights. But a $45 dollar cake, there's no point"). He also stated that I "had taken too long to order" - when I went in, I was just inquiring and trying to learn. He did seem impatient but I thought I had every right to ask for a minute to step a way and ask for advice from my family. No recomiendo esta panadería. Left everything last minute for planning my daughter's birthday party. I realized I had not ordered a cake yet. I normally order from a bakery from SE when they advised they no longer had capacity for another cake. I was looking on reviews online and decided to go somewhere local. I put in the order with reference to a cake they had online. It was a little pricey but being last minute I was okay with it with hopes that the cake would look great and taste delicious. They texted me (3) days before the party to confirm what design I wanted. They executed perfectly everyone loved the cake I would come here again. I don't think I've ever been tricked so badly in my entire life. By the time I was finished I was waiting for Ashton Kutcher to come storming in Trucker Cap and all! Service was nice, but the store itself was quite dated, it was dark inside, and even though they did have seating during this cold Winter it was upstairs... no fun for somebody with a walking disability. I've been seeing this bakery for quite some time and decided to see what they had for sandwiches. First of all, don't let the outside detour you. It's kind of funky and doesn't look very welcoming. Take a chance and head on in. You'll see beautifully baked breads galore! Today, I was not on a mission for bread but I will be going back for my next yummy loaf. Bread is my weakness and the smell alone made me weak in the knees. Now onto the purpose of my visit. Spicy AND green olives? Yes, please!! There were four sandwiches to choose from. Their version of a sandwich is a baked ball of bread with deliciousness inside. I stopped listening when I heard "spicy" and "green olive" so I cannot tell you with any certainty what was in the other sandwiches. My ball of yummy had beautiful chunks of prosciutto, spicy peppers, green olives, and cheese. It was delicious and very filling. My only critique was the bread to filling ratio. Maybe 3:1, so you must like bread! And it's good soft bread! Of course I had to get a cookie, too! I always go with a chocolate chip cookie when I'm trying a new bakery out... It's a classic. This large round disc of goodness was pretty delicious but not the best I've had. I prefer a softer, doughy-like cookie. This one was crispy but not hard, which was a bonus. It was kind of crumbly which made it a little messy! Don't eat it in your car. Overall, I was satisfied! Plus, the staff person was very friendly! Always a good thing! I will definitely go back. I wish I could give 1/2 stars because I'm undecided about 3 or 4. If my sandwich was slightly less bready and my cookie was slightly more doughy, then it would definitely be a 4! read more

Birthday cake was beautiful, except for handwritten salutation, and good, BUT it was the WRONG flavor we ordered, and of course did not know it until happy birthday was sung and cake was cut. What a disappointment! We paid $80 for the cake. Called store and was told we could get 50% off NEXT order. I have lived here 11 years and have never visited this store so guess it will be another 11 years before I can get my 50% off. The man was rude and first said he made it and that it was the correct flavor, and then in another conversation he said the person that made it was in the hospital, huh?? My wife wanted a Cinnamon roll... upon taking one bite she said "Quit asking me for bites and go give them a 5 star review, this is the best I have ever had" She is hard to please and loved it! I usually get the dry out side of the roll from her, but they magically caramelized a layer of sugar on the out side to keep the whole roll nice and moist. We also picked up a few olive and sun dried tomato rolls that were awesome and a raspberry filled pastry that tickled our fancy. The location has a nice Vancouver flair to it... in a odd location in the dated office park? Who cares it was that good! $3 for the cinnamon roll and $1.5 for the savory rolls was a great deal. I first heard about this bakery in The Columbian. Twice in a month's time. They were featured in the dining section with a full page review of their establishment and the second time a small blurb in the business section with mention of the fact that they're hoping to open up new locations -- one in Salmon Creek and another in Vancouver. In both reviews they were touted as Vancouver's only Organic Artisan Bakery. And as far as I know, this is quite true. It was exciting to find out that Vancouver (being so close to Portland with its plethora of delicious food establishments) actually had a made-from-scratch ORGANIC bakery. Basically, that meant "Wheee!!!" in my book. I LOOOOOVE good bread and I would also love to be able to make my own good bread. But until I am able to find the time to intern at a bakery or spend an entire year failing at making bread and wasting tons of flour and grain, I think I will continue to visit Julia's when I am in town. I have only had the pleasure of trying one variety of their bread -- the Olive Ciabatta. I was a bit overwhelmed by the assortment laid before me. Their website lists all the different bread they offer, but from my memory they have several varieties of ciabatta, whole wheat breads, sweet breads, sticky rolls/buns and I think I even saw some pita bread in the display case. The Olive Ciabatta was served up to me in a plain brown paper bag and as it was laid in my hands I realized that it had very recently come from the oven because it was just cooled enough to hold. It was a reasonably-sized loaf of bread for an even $5. I spent a few minutes browsing their small collection of bread baking books (including the famous "Crust & Crumb" which is incredibly intimidating) and smiling to myself at the different pages marked with Post-It notes. Once I reached the car I couldn't wait any longer and tore off a sizable piece and smiled AGAIN as I felt the crusty outside give way to a moist (I really don't like that word but there's not much other way to describe this bread) and airy interior. The bread was delicious and would have gone well with Greek OR Italian food, or just a chunk of cheese. I would seriously recommend visiting this bakery and trying their bread for yourself. Evidently they also have an upstairs to their bakery where you can avail yourself of their free wi-fi and enjoy some espresso while you watch Nenad bake away downstairs. My only reason for not giving a whole 5 stars is that I don't feel I have quite enough info yet. I have no doubt that once I've tried a few more varieties they will have that fifth star easily. Y'all are so dumb ordering cupcakes and cookies at a Hispanic bakery. They have to put options out there for people, they are great at what they know and that's making food from their country. The food right outside of the store is one of the best. If you get sick it's because your weak ass stomach can't take the delicious blends of spices. I haven't been to the actual store but I visit their booth at farmers market every weekend. I always buy a loaf of one of their various breads and have never been disappointed by my selection. Whether it's sourdough, cheese and garlic, challah, or anything else it is absolutely delicious and doesn't last more than a couple days in our house. Also, we always get one of their cheese sticks and eat it while perusing the market. We always get stopped by other people to ask what we are eating and where they can get one. This is a breadstick with cheese baked inside and on top and is my favorite weekly indulgence. This place is awesome. I could go on and on about their amazing food. read more

I ordered a Unicorn cake with a larger cupcake for my daughters first birthday and showed them a picture of what I was wanting it to look like with pastel colors. The cake turned out exactly the way I had hoped other than the colors being a bit darker than pastel but I am still happy with it. The owner of this bakery, Salvador, is the rudest! I called the bakery because my friend who does not speak Spanish wanted me to verify his order. I was hung up on because Salvador was very prideful of his English and said he was bilingual and had to have my friend call directly. When I returned his call I asked him why he had hung up on me, he said because he didn't understand me when I speak perfect Spanish. I think it might be a pride thing but I don't believe that any customers should be hung up on. The only thing I wanted to do was verify that he and his staff had the correct cake order. Additionally, the lack of customer service was astonishing. I will never return to this place again. People like Salvador don't deserve business. Not to mention, The food cart outside of the bakery is of concern. My family and I became extremely ill after consuming the food. I do not recommend anyone go here read more

I just got my birthday cake from Julia Bakery and it was absolutely fantastic. It was a black forest cake consisting of, rich chocolate cake, smeared with chocolate whipped cream and strawberries folded into the layers. Oh and to top it off, it had a HUGE chocolate shell on it! Fabulous, right? I called a month in advance for a simple order and was actually surprised that they remembered. (For some reason, I was waiting for them to be like 'oh sorry, never made that cake' or something.) We also didn't remember the price exactly when we came in but thought it was $39 or $35 dollars for the large cake, but they insisted on letting us pay $35 instead due to the miscommunication. Their other delicious and lovingly made creations are worth a trip across town, across the river and down the street! I'm ashamed to realize I've been driving by Julia since it opened but didn 't walk through the door until today. The store front is a modest, non-descript, office-like structure. I foolishly assumed it was someone's dream of business ownership that wouldn't last. Learning this morning that J'Taime, on Main St had closed, I was searching the Columbian to try to learn why it died. It was the first (as far as I knew) legit, hi-grade bakery where I could finally get a decent croissant in Vancouver. Doing so, I came across positive and interesting references to Julia. Just reading them made me feel dumb about my assumptions mentioned above. The owner is a serious baker who grew up in Croatia and worked for New Seasons (the best grocery in metro PDX) for 6 years. So, in I walk. This is obviously a serious family-run bakery. The Kaiser rolls were just out-of-the-oven, so I took two, a couple cherry scones and a loaf of wonderfully smelling wheat bread. I'm resisting my New Yorker impulses to exclaim delight with vulgarities. I normally take the C-Tran Line 4 to work. As of Monday, I'll be stopping at Julia for coffee and stuff and then catch Line 25 to work. If you are demanding and picky about your breads and pastries, go there at least once.
