I've been really excited to try Dumpling Hours for a while now, and finally had some extra time to stop in for lunch today. This restaurant is very cute and comfortable, and there was a lot of seating open around 11:30 am. By noon, it had almost filled up completely. You order through a QR code on the table, and food came out really quickly. The servers were still attentive despite the QR code system and it being peak lunch hour. I ordered the XLB Pork dumpling and the green beans with garlic. Both were great, but not the best I've ever had. There are a few places in SF that I feel have better XLB, but for Palo Alto this is definitely the best I've found. There are a few others things I really want to try that I wasn't able to get today, so I'm excited to come back and try more soon! read more

My fiance and I came here because we had to wait a while for my appointment at Stanford. We had no issues finding parking considering it was a Saturday. We were checking in at the kiosk when a server greeted us and told us there was an open spot inside where it was warm. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant felt very inviting and had good vibes. We ordered the pork dumplings, their wings and noodles. The noodles are a very good portion for two so that was a plus. The wings are so crispy and flavorful yet tender inside. The dumplings were exceptional. Prices were fair as well. I was on my way to Salt and Straw and saw a sign for dumplings! I made a little detours and found this cute restaurant! It was packed and had a line out of the door...as people waited to be seated I asked if I could order to go... I ordered their shrimp and pork soup dumplings. When I received my order I thought the bag was a little light for 6 dumplings for $15... the idea was to eat 1 and save the rest for when I got home...I ate all of them on my drive home... they were super flavorful and I couldn't stop eating them! Tried the pan fried dumpand shrimp/luffa gourd XLB because I've never had them and love luffa gourds. The XLBs looked way too large and because there was no meat, there was no soup, which was sad. New casual dumpling spot in downtown Palo Alto. This spot fills up quick so come early. No reservations. Many walk ins. I came with a large group so this may have varied responses. Ordered cucumber salad, zha jiang noodles, ginger and scallion noodles, fried chicken wings, wonton noodles, potato salad, XLB and vegetarian dumplings. Wonton - Table favorite. Who doesn't love peanut butter and chili wontons? Delicious. XLB - Hot, thin skin and full of soup. The soup is on the sweeter side. You'll need to ask for extra ginger. Vegetarian dumplings - Green and cute. They were delicious and filling. Love the amount of mushrooms in there. Fried chicken wings - Fair warning, this is EXTREMELY sticky. The amount of honey is insane. Chicken is good, but I think I may have spent more time taking the honey off my teeth than anything. Do not get this if you have braces. Cucumber salad - This was not bad. Nothing spectacular. Potato salad - Mixed reviews. Some people really loved this salad. It's cold, light and refreshing. It has minimal flavor to balance out some extremely flavorful things on the menu. Zha jiang noodles - They were ok. I think I like it at other places better. i stopped by with a few friends for a weekday dinner and it wasn't too busy - short wait, great service! the space is clean and welcoming. however, i think the food was just okay, especially when there are so many great dumpling options in the bay area. we had the pork xiao long bao, the pork sheng jian bao (pan fried soup dumplings), and wontons with chili oil and sesame sauce. everything was super hot and fresh, so i definitely give them credit for that! the xiao long bao were alright - a bit salty, the skin could be more thin (especially at the top). the sheng jian bao were pretty good - very crispy and juicy, but again quite doughy. the wontons were good but it mostly tasted like sesame sauce and not chili oil. i was put off by the flavor of their chili oil and surprised that they only provide soy sauce and not black vinegar at the table as well. they have it available on demand but the vinegar they gave us for the wontons/xlb wasn't that good. they also don't have normal spoons for the soup dumplings - just the giant red ones at the table, which are hard to eat out of. overall, the food was okay but i was just confused by some of the choices they made in the restaurant, which is both personal preference but also has to do with practicality! it just didn't feel very traditional or authentic, and some of the quality was off especially for the slightly elevated prices. i wouldn't say avoid this place but i probably would choose dough zone in san mateo or a dim sum house in south bay/sf over it! read more

My friend and I came here on a Tuesday at around 4pm and the shop was fairly empty. The waiter had us seated immediately and gave us time to look over the menu. We ended up ordering a 4 piece pork xiao long bao, pork wonton with sesame sauce and chili oil, and ginger scallion noodles. The xiao long baos were nice and juicy. The filling and soup were well seasoned and tasted really good. The noodles were chewy and had a great texture. I thought it was a little too salty for my liking but I would order it again. I didn't really like the wontons as I thought the sesame sauce and chili oil didn't really enhance the flavor at all. I didn't really taste the filling of the dumpling as the sauces were too overpowering and kinda got stuck at the back of your throat. Overall it was a nice meal and definitely some place that you would come with a group of people to share the different dishes. read more

We recently tried dumpling hours during their soft opening. It was fairly busy on a Sat afternoon but we were quickly seated. There's a qr code to order and although it was pretty slow in adding items to cart, we were able to send in our order online. They also have paper menus. For food we got the pork xiao long bao, sheng jian bao, wontons with sesame and chili oil, zha jian noodles, and dry shrimp, egg & chive pancakes to try. Everything was solid and our favorite was the wontons which came in a super creamy and savory sauce which was super yummy and almost curry-like! The xiao long bao were also excellent, full of soup and with really thin skin. The only disappointing dish was the sheng jian bao which oddly didn't have much meat filling and the fried bottom was too thick and hard without being crunchy. We'll definitely back as the location is great in downtown palo alto and it's much closer to us than going up to SF for our all-time dumpling spot in the bay. read more

The worst shumai I've ever had- comparable to gas station food! Gave me awful GI issues.

Came here as a party of three and decided to order the 8 pork XLB, dandan noodles, and shengjianbao. I wasn't sure what to make of this place and how authentic it was, but after trying it I can say that Dumpling Hours puts its own unique spin on each of its dishes and it doesn't come off as pretentious. I really enjoyed the xiaolongbao, they were so juicy and worth the price. I'm not the biggest fan of soup dumplings typically, but these were good even by my standards. I liked that their spoons for eating them were perfectly sized to fit the xlb inside! The dandan noodles were a little too sesame and oil-heavy for my taste, but the texture of the noodles was very QQ. It came off saltier than it should have. The shengjianbao were good! Lots of soup inside them, but I was mostly surprised that they did not come in typical Shanghai fashion where they're inside a bao. The pi/skin was thinner, which I wasn't a fan of. I think the fluffy exterior of shengjianbao really helps soak up the soup from within, but each to their own. Because it was thin, the crisp pan-fried bottom that I typically enjoy wasn't that satisfactory either. Overall I had a good experience dining here, the food came out quick and there aren't a lot of options for authentic Chinese food in downtown Palo Alto. I'm glad to see one pop up. We're always excited to see a new dumpling place open and made the drive over the PA to try a new opening! 5/5 for their Pan Fried Baos - probably the best I've ever had! I usually don't go for this classic dish given it's typically a huge sized bun with a thicker, doughy wrap that's very filling and I prefer a higher ratio of meat/soup to wrapper but these are fantastic! Smaller and perfectly fits into your soup so you can take reasonable, delicious bites that are FULL of soup flavor. 4/5 for their Dan Dan noodles and the classic pork Xiao Long Baos. Both were very tasty - the noodles had a deep peanut flavor and the XLBs were full of soup. You can tell the ingredients were fresh so these were a solid pick but just not as stand out as their pan fried buns. Service was okay - we came just before the lunch rush and we're promptly seated inside and you order via a QR code. Our waitress came up and only spoke directly to a few of us in Mandarin, which was okay but not great for others at our table who felt somewhat left out. Their prices are quite high, even for the Palo Alto area we felt. We only ordered three dishes, it was enough but still came out very pricey at almost $20 per plate if you count taxes and tip. Especially for 8 dumplings it was very steep. Inside was clean, modern, and new so it was very comfortable. Would recommend for a meal every once in a while but given the price point and distance for us - it's not a regular-worthy spot. read more

Service was super fast. There was a line when we arrived but we added our name to the list and they called our number out about 20 mins later. They were quick to seat people as tables cleared up but they didn't rush anyone while eating or paying. Best xiang long bao I've had in a long time!! I was in a large party so I got to try a lot of things, and the people I went with agreed the food is authentic and better than Din Tai Fung's. We ordered three types of xiao long bao: pork, spicy pork, and pork & crab. They were cooked perfectly and uniform in size and shape. The skin was thin but stretchy so the xiao long bao wouldn't fall apart, and each bite was an explosion of flavor. The little spoon/cup to hold the xiao long bao was handy for minimizing mess. Our table liked the spicy pork the most, but you can't go wrong with the other fillings. I highly recommend the other dishes we got too. The wood ear mushroom salad and soybean curd noodles were light and refreshing. The dan dan noodles were thick and coated in sauce, which I liked but others may find too oily. The green onion pancakes, a classic, were crispy and warm. The beef shank was surprisingly good; I wasn't expecting much flavor-wise, but it had an interesting blend of heat and sweetness that I was a huge fan of. Some things I would like to try next time are the pan fried pork buns and the wontons with sesame sauce chili oil. Also if you go here and don't order xiao long bao, you're really missing out. Service was good. The food came out relatively spaced out and fresh off the steamer. We sat outside and it was quite pleasant in the shade. Came around 8:30pm on a Saturday night with one table ahead of me and they were told the kitchen closes soon. We opted to sit outside and ordered right away. Xiao long baos were great! This restaurant was better than what I had remembered at the one in Walnut Creek years ago. Xiao long bao's skin was so thin and light, but held up and didn't break when transporting from the steamer to the red holder cup thing. Wanted to really like this place but sadly to say I was left a bit disappointed, and so was the others in my party. The only thing we really enjoyed were the garlic green beans. Delicious!! They were cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Perfect snap but tender & just enough garlic and umami flavor coming through. As for the dumplings, the pot stickers were undercooked and still had raw dough on the steamed side. They tried to do the little crispy skirt someplace do but it wasn't totally there . The ginger scallion noodles were bland and had no ginger, scallion or much of any flavor. Shu mai was okay, but nothing I'd go back for, and the xlb didn't blow me away either. The dough was a little thicker and not tender compared to other xlb's I've had. Over all I really wouldn't go out of my way to go back here unless I was near and wanted the green beans again. Seriously, they were so good but none of the dumplings wowed any of us. Although the food was lacking, the service was decent and I liked watching the guys make the dumplings. I was in downtown when the soft opening sign caught our eye. I'm so glad we checked this spot out. We were told it was going to be a 30 minute wait but it was around 15-20ish minutes. The servers were friendly and made sure that everyone waiting outside had already checked in. Ordering is done by QR code or by the server, we used the QR code instead since the servers were really busy checking everyone in. We ordered the pan fried pork dumplings, ginger and scallion noodles, spicy xiao long bao, scallion pancake, and the chicken xiao long bao. Each dumpling and bao was filled to the brim with meat and a warm, savory soup. I recommend adding the chili oil they provide, it had a mild vinegar taste. I haven't tried a chili oil with an acidic flavor before. I was taken aback of how well it complimented the dishes. Especially with the noodle dish. It gave it a nice contrast with the sweetness of the noodles. The reason why I gave it 4 stars is because I think it's a bit on the pricey side for what you're getting. Everything is so freshly made with so much flavor and juice, I especially recommend the truffle soup dumplings, the crab and pork soup dumplings and the dan dan noodles!! Let's begin by saying I truly love this place. My overall experience here has been very good with everything being 4 stars out better. My friend and I arrived at the restaurant just prior to the end of the lunch rush. The restaurant was pretty busy an and the was a sign up sheet waiting list. To my surprise it took only about 5 minutes to get a table on the outside but since it was a little chilly the staff was able to give us an inside table 5 minutes later. The restaurant itself is pretty small with indoor and outdoor dining available. Decor was very nice and cozy. Ordering food was as simple as accessing the QR code on the table and selecting the items you want. Picture on the website made ordering easy. They even provided WiFi access for those who may have poor cell signal on your phone. Once the order was submitted the first dish showed up in about 3 minutes. All the other dishes trickled in over the next few minutes. The steamed food took less time than the fried food. My favorite was the shrimp and pork siu mai which was the best I have ever tasted. The size, filling and texture was almost perfect IMHO. Next was the hot and spicy Xiao Long Bao. It just had a light hint of spiciness which would fulfill most palates. Adding hot sauce to it will improve the spiciness. The third was the pork wontons with sesame sauce and chili oil. Very tasty and great texture. However I think they should lighten up on the sesame sauce a little. Next was the green beans salted in garlic sauce. Very tasty and even better when you add some chili oil. Lastly the dry fried chicken wings. Al things considered a tasty dish. My take on fried chicken wings is based on frying them with just the batter, salt and pepper will tell you how good the wings can be. The sauce on it was very sweet and lightly spiced. Perhaps a new menu item without the sauce might make for an interesting menu item. Go to Dough Zone instead. While the highs here were quite high the lows were so low that the insanely high prices make this a one and done for us. XLB and SJB were well done but the broth was sweet and gingery like a Trader Joe's soup dumpling. The beef noodle soup was incredibly bland and a pale imitation of Ox9. Green beans good. Chicken wings were like someone deep fried wings in General Tso's batter. When you factor in the prices which are nearly double Dough Zone and the crowds of locals and well off Stanford students, there's no reason to go here unless you really don't want to go to Cupertino. Our favourite was the juicy pork buns - came out piping hot, crispy and very juicy! The noodles were really meh and I felt like they were lukewarm and a bit bland. The dumplings were basic and nothing too special. The place itself was okay but felt it could be a little cleaner! Service was also just so-so, a little pushy. I'm a big fan of Dumpling Hours. The food reminds me a lot of Dumpling Home in SF, and is also pretty similar to Dough Zone (but better, IMO). In particular, the chive pockets are much larger, have way more filling, and are crispy/fried so they have that extra crunchy texture. In addition, the brisket beef soup has meat that is incredibly tender and savory -- however, I think the flavor of this soup could be improved. Really enjoyed the pan fried bao which seems to be the classic dish of the restaurant. I'll have to come back to get some XLB! read more

Dumpling Hours is amazing. I was just walking by the area and found this cute place. I wanted something quick before getting to work. Parking was easy to find for Friday afternoon. I had no problems at all. Most parking are street parking with a 2 hour limit. There were a lot of people in this restaurant, so I knew it was good. The staff was adorable and kind. I love the smile on their faces. The walls were adorned with lotus and leaves art. You can see the chefs making the dumplings through their kiosk. I ordered the 8 pieces of xiao long bao. Most of their items range between $12-$25 per plate. I had the pork xiao long bao which completely filled me up. Their service was very quick and the food was delicious. If I had more time for lunch, I would definitely try more plates. I'll come by again next time! read more
