Dumplings are my current obsession, and when on St marks, go venturing for the best food you can find. This place is small, hole in the wall esk, but it packs enough room to serve a number of people. You order at the front, chicken,pork,shrimp, vegetarian dumplings. They come with the option of being pan fried or steamed. We got a little bit of everything sampling all the combinations. I have to say that their idea of 'fried' isnt what I normally think of...the dumpings were still soggy and covered in oil, I think from now on I will just ordered steamed all the way. I didnt care for the shrimp dumplings...perhaps I just dont like corn with the shrimp...the combo was a little strange for me. The surprise dumplings were soup dumplings !! Still not the best dumplings I've ever had - I'm looking at you Vanessa's! This place is very good and I definitely see the appeal. The prices are cheap and the dumplings pretty good. Even better when you're drunk! But seriously. Get yours pan fried & not steamed. They taste a lot better with a little bit of crunch :) The filling on the chicken and pork dumplings that I ordered was really juicy and flavorful. They sort of fell apart but only because I was dipping it in the dumpling sauce so much. That sauce is amazing! I actually only tried the free one hey have at the tables. Overall the service was pretty quick - less than 10 minutes, but I stand by my shout out to Vanessa's dumpling House - they're faster and cheaper. The dumplings here are delicious!! Everything is homemade, including the dough on the outside which makes all the difference. I grew up eating homemade dumplings and these are definitely authentic. I love how you can watch the Chinese women make the dumplings right in front of you. The prices are very cheap and the amount of filling inside the dumplings are very generous. When we walked by the dumpling man, he said the pork dumplings were very similar to his father's recipe. I was really in the mood for a shrimp dumpling similar to har gaw (dim sum) so I ordered one. Unfortunately it was not even close. I liked the steamed chewy skin and fresh shrimp but it contained corn!?!!! The sweet corn did NOT pair well with the shrimp. My friends and I popped in after one of them got hammered and challenged me a speed eating dumpling contest. No, thank you. We were hanging out in East Village and got lured in by the cute little Dumpling Man logo. We thought it would be a harmless snack stop, but we suffered the consequences. The service here was extremely slow, even though there were tons of dumplings that looked ready to serve, just sitting there, sticking together. We waited about 10-15min for our to go order of 6 dumplings. The dumplings themselves had some of the thickest skin on a dumpling I had ever experienced. The dumpling was honestly mostly skin. The meat in the pork dumplings was tough, and the filling in the shrimp dumplings was mostly corn and some sort of doughy starchy filler. We also made the mistake of ordering dessert dumplings (pumpkin and banana). It was basically pumpkin pie filling and baby food, respectively, in a thick dumpling wrapper. Dumpling Man made me very sad and I was full of regret. Would not recommend. Please learn from my mistakes. read more

A cute little dumpling joint that defines hole-in-the-wall. This is why I loooove the East Village. Populated by students, you can get cheap, multicultural fare anywhere and just feast on that forever and ever and ever. Ah, ethnic foodie bliss. The pork dumplings, steamed and seared, are fantastic. The shrimp is divine, especially with corn. The chicken is kind of forgettable and the vegetable dumplings are a big let-down (my favorite kind of dumplings in the world are Shanghainese vegetarian dumplings, so it's not that I don't like vegetarian dumplings). The soup dumplings are great, even if the broth is more Americanized in flavor than Chinese (e.g. less heavy on the ginger, more on chicken stock-esque taste). The elderly Chinese man and woman making dumplings and chatting in Cantonese behind the glass wall that separates you from them is just icing on the cake. I was in the neighborhood and saw the cute little sign beckoning me in "after school special!" from 3-5 six tasty dumplings and a can of soda for 3.50. I had shrimp and each one had a big ol' tasty piece of shrimp in it. they were crispity crunchity on the bottom, a bit doughy, but a great little snack or early light dinner. Dumpling Man pumps average dumplings catered to the American palette but not authentic Chinese amid they are prepared by Chinese Toisan and Hoisan, both a subculture ethnic group of mainstream Cantonese in Canton province, I can distinctly distinguish the tones resonated from the women visibly preparing by hand. These women chefs all wear white clothing and "I Love NY" t-shirts as their effort to blend into American life parted ways from Canton, China. Dumpling Man is surely without question a whole lot cost effective significantly less than Rickshaw. Dumplings are cooked by patrons' request either steamed or pan seared fried, I personally prefer steamed to mimic restaurant Dim Sum quality. It appears a gargantuan embarrassingly yet pathetic spelling error in the "Special Sauces" category for "ASAIN Tahini" rather than correctly spelt "ASIAN Tahini." Ergo, this Tahini sauce was okay but not worth $1.50. My 6 piece dumpling pot at $4.50 was divided half of Pork chives and half shrimp with Asian Tahini sauce at $1.50 with one bottle of Green Tea at $2.25 totaling an utter dismay $10.00. Sauces are unruling fee separate at $1.50 each when it should be included in the dumplings otherwise, I'd elect the free yet standard Soy Sauce at the amenities counter. My six piece pot took an eternal fifteen minutes to prepare which did not appear fully cooked as there were parts of the dumpling dough fending a white uncooked look. The shrimp dumplings contains white fish, corn and ginger which is not what I hoped for, as a native, I prefer it plain shrimp unscathed for the purity of shrimp. I prefer Vanessa Dumplings or Prosperity Dumplings for the low prices and authenticity in keeping to Chinese cuisine for the purity of Chinese culture. On a Sunday early afternoon it was near empty with myself, a family of three and two other strays. Seating is minimal and facilities appear nonexistent. Service is cordial with a smile and informative interaction with professionalism communication. A loyalty rewards card is available where the tenth stamp permits a free order. read more

While they are a notch above the Chinatown $1 dumpling spots, they are also $4.95 per order. That being said if you are in the area and need a fix, def do stop by, but if you know that you will be heading downtown to the land of dollar dumplings, def do hold off. An order for a buck, although not as good as these will def do the trick just the same. read more

This little shop was pretty empty during a weekday lunch hour. They have all sorts of dumplings from beef to pork to vegetables and you can have them steamed or seared which I assumed was pan-fried. I had ordered 6 pork dumplings which was $4.95 and asked for it to go. They charge an extra 25 cents if you have them wrap it up for you. All the condiments like soy sauce, hot sauce and utensils were all laid out for your convenience when the order is given to you. The taste of the dumplings were really sub-par.
