Tasty! I think it's bold to name your restaurant "The Best Sichuan" when there's so many other Sichuan places in NYC. Judging by the menu photos, this used to be called Mala House? Anyways, I can't get Sichuan food where I live, so I try to take advantage whenever I travel to bigger cities with more culinary diversity. I also happened to be here with someone who doesn't eat meat, so sadly I couldn't try their Spicy Beef Noodle Soup, which I would glady come back for. I did like the Fish Dry Pot dish. Walked in with a group of 6 on a sunday evening around 7 PM, and were seated immediately. The staff were very quick to take our order and bring out our food, and were constantly refilling our waters throughout the evening. They were also very kind and constantly smiling at us. Food itself had pretty good flavors, but was pretty oily. It also wasn't as spicy or numbing as I'd expect from a Sichuan spot. Started off with wonton soup, ordered the Black Bean Chicken (salty, not spicy, but excellent flavor) along with white rice and Green Tea. Nice Szechuan restaurant that gets busy fast! I have never seen restaurant workers move as quickly and efficiently as the ones there. I appreciated that despite running around to take orders, clear tables, and seat guests, the servers were attentive and friendly to us. We ordered fish dry hot pot, dry fried green beans, and shredded potatoes. The dry fish pot was delicious and the green beans were nice and crunchy. I got the dry pepper chicken and he got the sesame chicken. Mine came with a egg drop soup and he got the spring roll. The dry pepper chicken was very good and very spicy, hence the name. It had jalapeños and dry chillies all over. It was heavy on the flavor and heat. But I don't mind that at all. I ate it with white rice. I would defi6get it again. My coworker said his sesame chicken was ok. He mentioned it was a bit dry but I did not taste it. So I can't give my opinion it. Over all I would go back and try some more of there dishes. read more

And it wasn't just the spice level that was lacking, but sodium as well - the black bean shrimp and mapo tofu were just really under seasoned and the mushrooms in the black bean dish weren't cooked all the way through and were inedible. We went here for a quick Saturday night dinner and ended up pretty satisfied with the meal. This place seems pretty well known for their ma la xiang guo (dry hot pot) and we got the one with mutton. The meat was really tender and the flavor was excellent, with a good amount of heat mixed with a touch of numbing from the Szechuan peppercorn. We also got the dry pepper chicken which seems like their rendition of a chongqing fried chicken and it also was pretty good, with tender crispy chicken and plenty of heat from fried peppers and jalapeños. That chili oil wontons were tooo good. I was skeptical about the place, given the juxtaposition of the zen music and classy interior against the flaming messy spicy food we were about to eat. The wontons proved me wrong though. They were only slightly spicy for my low tolerance, and the skin was so smooth and smooth. I do wish there was more filling though. The Beef Dry Pot Style was presented HOT on a wok. So the food was kept warm throughout the experience. The beef was tender, and slightly fried a bit. Not sure if it worked in the dry pot though. Good food and great service. I picked up a lunch order here that I submitted via Yelp. I got a confirmation but the restaurant never got the order. With in just a few minutes the staff had it sorted, even with out the order, and got me my food so I could get back to work. I got a call later from Yelp that the order went through delayed and we got everything squared away, meaning the resto trusted that I'd paid upfront and risked their own money to make sure I got on my way quickly. Stellar support. And to boot, the food was good too. I got the mapo tofu extra spicy, and the egg drop soup (which left me wanting more, just like egg drop soup should). We stumbled upon this restaurant after a strenuous morning, and we were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was here. While the price seems expensive, the quantity makes up for it! 3 people can easily be full from 2 entrees and a few sides of rice. The first dish that blew me away was their eggplant and garlic sauce. Now, I've had this at many locations, however, it has never been as good as it was here. The eggplants are roasted and broiled, perfectly, giving it a little bit of a harder bite than the usual soft eggplant elsewhere. The other part was their sauce, which was absolutely flavorful, garlicky, and thick. The second dish was the vegetable dry pot. This dish is made with a Szechuan paste and several cruciferous vegetables. This mouth numbing dish has incredible flavor, and the crunchiness of the veggies paired with the fresh rice is an excellent combination. The staff were pretty attentive as well, which led to an overall pleasant experience. The one thing I wish they would improve is seating people. When they are not busy, they still put all the people together rather than spacing them out. The restaurant was pretty empty, however, everyone that came in got seated at tables right next to us. Being a small restaurant, I would ask that staff seat people apart to allow for a better experience, unless they are incredibly busy. We'll, crap. We've been sleeping on this joint. It's been around for over a year and I haven't even noticed it when searching for Szechuan in and around our neighborhoods. Regardless, I'm glad we finally stopped in, because it's an easy addition to our mala rotation. As others have noted, the service here is exceptional. We were promptly greeted and seated (which wasn't a problem, given the place was dead empty on a frigid late-February Monday evening). Everyone was super attentive and multiple servers checked in on us throughout our meal. Empty plates were whisked away within moments and my water glass never fell below half empty. I would've been concerned about potential overstaffing issues if not for the fact that--during our hour-ish meal--we probably saw two dozen takeout and delivery orders also get handled. Clearly, they're not slow on the to-go business. As far as cuisine goes, we never order Szechuan without trying the dan dan noodles and Mala House's are classic. Their price point is slightly lower than many of their competitors and the portion size is generous. In fact, the theme of our meal was unexpectedly sizable portions. The same held true of their wontons in chili oil and our scallion style beef. Between two sturdy six-foot (give or take a few inches) guys, we barely polished off those three dishes. Upon leaving, we were both heartily satisfied without feeling grossly full. Mala House isn't short on competitors within a 10- or 15-block radius; as a more casual cousin to the likes of CHILI, Café China, or Han Dynasty, it confidently holds its own. read more

Lucky for us, the appetite for and familiarity of Szechuan food is as strong as it was for Cantonese food in past decades such that everywhere you look in NY, a new Szechuan restaurant seems to open up. Mala House is a lot less glamorous than many of the buzzier ones opening in the city, but the flavors don't lie and they have a solid lunch special. That's important in Flatiron, where at least some percentage of office workers are back. It was during one of my days in the office that I stopped in for a quick lunch. The restaurant is somewhat small but it feels like a mostly takeout operation so we easily sat at one of their empty tables. Service was prompt and thankfully their kitchen is speedy. We enjoyed the fish fillet with silky tofu which had just a hint of spice and lots of flavor that went so well with a bowl of hot rice. Similarly the mapo tofu was the perfect complement to a bowl of white rice, this time with punchier, tongue numbing peppercorns. The food overall was tasty though oilier and saltier than I would've preferred. If you're in the area you could do worse than enjoying a hearty feast here. read more

We cane here last night around 7:30 Saturday looking for a nearby Chines Sichuan restaurant and were totally surprised with the menu and very generous portions: steamed shrimp dumplings, wonton soup, chicken Lo Mein, Fried Duck and and a mushroom vegetable dish. Attentive staff, very reasonable prices and when we entered, it was almost a full house. No reservations are needed but we did so anyway. I came here for a quick solo lunch on a weekday. The lunch special is $12.95 or $13.95 depending on what you get. I got the fish fillet with black bean sauce which was $13.95 I appreciated that the dish came with onions and bell peppers for that full meal experience, though they were on the crunchier side. The fish was plentiful and tender, with good flavor from the black beans. I struggled to finish everything so the portion size is definitely good! The hot and sour soup was a bit more sour and less savory than I would've liked, but it was still good. Overall the service was quick and cordial. First time here today, can't believe I didn't know if its existence until today when my colleague told me about it. I ordered the General Tso Lunch special for $12.95 for pick up. Decent portion, it comes with rice and a choice of spring roll or soup. I went for the hot and sour soup. It was pretty delicious and it was almost like the pringles experience - once you start, you can't stop... perhaps it's been awhile since I had good Chinese. Wow! What a delicious place! We randomly saw this place on google maps and decided to stop by. They are having an opening promotion where everything is 32% off this month! Everything we tried was amazing. The Dan Dan noodles had a great nutty flavor. The wontons in chili oil were some of the best I've ever had. The sauce had a slightly sweet taste to it. I loved the dry pepper style chicken as well. It came with a bowl of rice which was on the smaller side given the size of the entree but we had adequate carbs to go with it since we ordered noodles too. Finally the cucumbers were great as well. It was unseasoned which was a good palate cleanser given how savory everything else was. I didn't think the garlic sauce went well with cucumbers so I mostly ate the cucumbers plain or with the leftover sauces of the other dishes which was actually perfect.
