Had a pretty good meal here with a group of co-workers. I tried the cucumber salad, mapo tofu, eggplant in garlic chili sauce, and scallion pancakes. I really liked the scallion pancake and eggplant. The pancake wasn't crispy/dry, but rather the exterior was crisp and the inside was still a little soft/fluffy. It's the first time I had a scallion pancake that wasn't just straight dough inside/outside, or so thin that it got crisped out. I really liked this texture profile though. The eggplant was 10/10; the eggplant was cooked well, so tender but not soggy. The sauce was really good too such that it was sufficient spice but not flaming. Would recommended. I enjoyed the cucumber salad and tofu as well, but have had better. Seasoning and prep were good though -- although the tofu was cooked so tender (or maybe was silken tofu to begin with) that the whole table was struggling with carrying it from plate to mouth -- heh. We also ordered a side of rice as none of the dishes come with it automatically. The spicy wontons came first and they were delicious! The broth it came with was perfectly spicy and so flavorful. Our two other dishes were good as well. The fish fillet with tofu was my favorite. It was similar to mapu tofu but had the fish fillets mixed in as well which I liked. The chicken in garlic sauce was good too but we felt the fish with tofu was much better. The portions are also pretty big so we were able to take our entrees back for future leftovers. My cousins and I had a craving for chili wontons and even though we should have made that trek down to Chinatown for some, we opted for a place that was within our vicinity. CHILI offered all of the dishes we were craving, from the garlic green beans, chili wontons, spicy mapo tofu.. only it didn't quite hit the spot for us. When first walking in, I felt like I was transported to a movie set of Chinatown set in the early 2000's. The ambience feels a bit off and the minty green walls feel unbalanced especially with the bright rich colors of the food. I want to preface the rest of this review that I thought the food was excellent and would definitely come back for it, but the alcoholic drinks were some of the worst we've ever had. I almost threw up just from the taste. I'd warn not to drink the alcohol (which is a shame because alcohol typically goes so well with spicy food), but order the food with confidence. Chili has pretty solid Chinese food that feels elevated. The interior feels classy and has relatively dim lighting. The service was pleasant and the food came out very quickly! For food, I tried the braised tofu with crab meat with rice, the sautéed Chinese broccoli, and beef with pickled chili. All of the food was great with the tofu and crab having a strong umami flavor and the beef having a nice kick of spice to it. My favorite was definitely the tofu with crab so I'd highly recommend trying it. The portion size was pretty large and I definitely had some leftovers after. They do t aceto reservations for parties of fewer than 4 people, but we got here very early on a Thursday afternoon (5:15p) and the place was empty. However, by the time we left, there were barely any seats available. The service was professional and not super rushed. Food came in pretty quickly. Dan Dan noodles: good, although they could have put more sauce. Pork dumplings in chili oil: you have to get these. The chili oil is so good you'll clean the bowl (or use the left over on some sticky rice later, so don't send it back if you don't finish it!). Pork soup dumplings: yummy. Kung pao chicken: I've had this elsewhere and it's always been crunchy... like eating candies. Although it had flavor, this wasn't crunchy. Tea smoked duck with sticky rice (deboned): very sizable. The duck is attached to the sticky rice, and the whole thing is cut into stripes. The sticky rice was very crunchy but the duck is a bit dry. The dish was very flavorful, though. Overall, we had a very good meal. We would have loved to try another couple of dishes, such as the truffle beef tenderloin and the chungking spicy chicken, but we were stuffed. All were tasty, fresh, and hit the spot. The cumin beef was good, but the cumin was almost too overpowering compared to the beef. The service was another story. Each person who worked there was incredibly cold and rude towards our table of 5. We were sat 1 hour and 15 minutes before closing and it felt as if they couldn't get us out of there quick enough. Despite that, the place was packed and quite loud and busy. Our table ordered an array of cocktails and I was able to try a few with my favorites being the Life is a Peach ($17), Purple Rain ($17), and Chili Margarita ($17). I was slightly disappointed that the chili Margarita came with a lime garnish instead of a chili like I've seen in photos though. (Also noticed other tables got the chili, but not mine so it's not like they ran out for the day --weird). Think they were actually a bit big so made eating them tough. Beef pancake wrap: 10/10 highly recommend. The beef is aromatic (braised beef that you would get in a classic beef noodle soup) and tender and the scallion pancake is so flaky and fresh. Spicy cumin lamb: solid, tasted like Xian's tbh Golden garlic shrimp: do not recommend, I don't know why but the shrimp tasted really bad, like almost too much of a shrimp flavor and I didn't get much garlic flavor at all despite the name. I think I literally only tasted the fried thyme (there were massive stalks of it in the dish). Braised pork with chestnut: also 10/10, would eat this dish up any day. Best Szechuan Chinese food I've ever had. CHILI is phenomenal. I took my work team here, and this meal was such a hit. Everything was bold, fragrant, intense, authentic, and so incredibly delicious. No item was a disappointment. But the truffle beef tenderloin and pickled fish stew were the most memorable. They both had such original, distinct, strong, and delicious flavors, in very different ways. I highly recommend both of those items for delicious, unique, and memorable food experiences.
