I did not expect to find a sit down Cantonese & Sichuan Restaurant in the heart of Herald Square. For sure a hidden gem worth trying. Came here with two other friends for dinner and we pigged out. We started off with Scallion Pancake with Shredded Duck ($15), which tasted amazing. The pancake was flaky and not overly soaked in oil, while the duck meat enhanced the taste. I think everything should order this for the table. We also got the Dan Dan Noodles w Minced Pork ($8), which is a staple dish in Sichuan cuisine. Make sure you stir the bowl to mix the sauce and minced pork. For veggies, we got the Sautéed Green Beans With Eggplant ($18), which tasted great. I usually get sautéed pea shoots for a veggie dish, but this was worth ordering as the eggplant tasted great along with the green beans. For entrees, we got the Spicy Green Pepper Fish Filet ($28 for filet). A classic Cantonese dish that comes with bok choy, so it turns out I didn't really need to order a veggie dish. Delicious. We also tried the OOHU Mao Xue Wang ($34), which may be one of the most spiciest dish available on the menu. This dish combines blood curd from a duck, tripe, and chicken gizzards along with other organs into a simmered broth containing chilis and peppercorns. They also use spam, vermicelli noodles, mushroom, and other things. If you're adventurous and you like spicy, I would recommend this. Best eaten with a cup of rice. Service is great as our server made good recommends and was overall friendly. They also have a party room you can book, which sounded pretty affordable. Don't recall what their minimum spend was, but it was super reasonable compared to a lot of other spots in Chinatown and Flushing. read more

I came here for a large dinner party where we got seated in the private room in the back. The space fits three large tables although we only used two. We ordered multiple dishes which came out one after the other. Some of the standouts for me were the Pork Intestine Dry Pot ($20.95), Crispy Tofu with Salty Egg Yolk ($23.95), and Sauteed String Beans ($16.95). Many spicy food options since this is a Szechuan spot afterall. Some dishes were a bit too salty and spicy, which they did discount after we brought it to their attention. OOHU is a restaurant in Midtown that offers Szechuan + Cantonese food. We were debating to get either Korean food or try OOHU out & decided to go w/ OOHU for dinner. I would stick w/ the Sichuan dishes and skip the Cantonese dishes like 干炒牛河/Beef chow fun because wok hei wasn't that great + flavors for that dish didn't taste all that good/authentic. Here's what we ordered: -scallion pancake -scallion pancake roll w/ duck -salty egg yolk shrimp -dry pot frog -stir fried string beans + eggplant -milk custard w/ caramel (similar to crème brûlée) -fried fish filet w/ garlic -beef chow foon My favorite dish that we ordered was the dry pot frog! I LOVE frog and the dish was delicious! The frog meat was also very meaty and did not skimp at all. Flavor was also good; it was Sichuan style + had the perfect amount spice. Only thing I wished was if the dish could've been more hot. My second favorite is the salted egg yolk shrimp. It was made with JUMBO SHRIMP, very tasty + I like most dishes that are salty egg yolk fried. The fried fish filet w/ garlic was disappointing. It was mostly garlic and only had a few pieces of the fish. Tasty but skimpy. I notice that they put a lot of filler ingredients like the fried enoki mushrooms in the jumbo shrimp dish or the garlic in the fish dish. My least favorite dish was the scallion pancake because it was SO OILY. Overall, all of the dishes had good flavor but had some minor issues. Staff was nice and parking is much easier to find in this area, though if you plan to stay in the area longer, I would suggest parking at a lot. It was $15 for 2 hours of meter parking in the area, whereas when we had parked in a lot earlier in the day towards 5th Ave, it was less than $30 for the up to 10 hrs. read more

Surprisingly high-quality Sichuan spot, the eggplant and green beans here are among the best I've had, and the spicy boiled beef was very authentic as well. This restaurant is among a newer axis of Sichuan restaurants that stretch across Midtown. Oohu is in one of the most random, nondescript locations out of the whole bunch, in that sort of no-man's-land between Herald Square and Times Square. read more

BIG fan of OOHU. I stay at the moxy down the street often for work and so glad I found this Chinese place. I love the atmosphere-- it's both cozy and inviting. I usually start with a jasmine green tea. It comes in this little teapot with a gorgeous ceramic cup. I've tried the cucumber with scallion pesto which was excellent. Quite spicy but refreshing! The wonton soup is quite good; some of the wonton meat was a little chewy at times but I enjoyed overall. Both times I've gone I ordered the chicken with broccoli. Although this place is definitely Szechuan focused, their chicken broccoli is DELICIOUS. It's incredibly good and I can't bring myself to order anything else there haha. The service is also super welcoming especially to solo diners. I feel like this place is a gem hidden in plain sight. One day I'll try their lunch special and maybe get a Szechuan dish. A two-course lunch priced between $12 and $14 is considered a deal in Manhattan. At 2:30 the restaurant was filled. An hour later, empty. Lunch ends at 3:00. Had one of us ordered egg drop soup and the other hot and sour, a combination of the two would've been great. By itself, hot and sour was too hot for either of us. Mainly me. Double cooked pork is one of my favorite dishes, however I avoid taking chances in restaurants I haven't been to. Unless trimmed, the meat is fatty. And this was. Fine for T. Not for me. I went with beef in black bean sauce -- my top-pick forty years ago in Chinatown's WoHop. Oohu's isn't as good, but it wasn't bad. This is the kind of restaurant I wouldn't go out of my way for but would certainly patronize when I'm in the area. A four-star rating may be generous, but not by much. read more

Everything was delicious, the only minor complaint was the dan dan noodles were too oily, but were nice and spicy. The soup dumplings were absolutely delicious and I would go back just for those alone. The garlic sauce chicken and cumin lamb were very tasty, similar to other szechuan places and a good portion size. Overall a really good meal and fairly priced. This is a location of a prior Chinese restaurant, or it's the same owners and they simply changed the name. I ordered take-out. It's close to where I have an office, so it's a convenient location. I was not impressed with the food though. The prior restaurant seemed better. The decor - from what I saw - is above average for this type restaurant. Was going to get pizza for dinner and we re-routed ourselves when we noticed the pizzas in the window display weren't to appetizing. I saw this place and we wanted some Chinese food. This is a legit Chinese restaurant food minus the slow American Pop music. Multiple tables that can seat from 2-6 people. 4.5 Stars - Servers were helpful when answering the questions you might have. There are no pictures on the menu. Written in English and Chinese. We order: 1. Oolong Hot Tea ($10) - good tea - server brought the hot tea and suggested to let it steep for a few minutes for the tea flakes to stregnthen its flavor in the hot water before pouring. Pro Tip Reminder - serve the other person before serving yourself 2. Pork Steamed Dumplings (gao type - crescent shaped), Beef and Broccoli, and Chicken Garlic Sauce. 3.75 Stars on Pork Steam Dumplings- dumplings were seasoned and flavorful with the Pork and Green Onions. They were plump and served on a plate instead in a bamboo steamer. So they weren't as steamy hot as you want. 3. 3.5 Stars - Beef and Broccoli. It was okay. The beef was tendered with a little bit of chewiness and the broccoli were cooked perfectly, al dente (hint of crunch and softness). The sauce was okay. It lacked seasoning such as garlic, ginger or pepper. 4 stars - Chicken w Garlic Sauce. Definitely the "hit" of our meal. Flavorful garlic sauce with a pleasant umami flavor (rich, dark and spicy but not too spicy). Also, it included black mushrooms, garlic, ginger, water chestnuts, and broccoli swimming in the garlic sauce. So good! Both meals were served with White Jasmine rice. Pro Tips: 1. Ask for the homemade Hot Chili oil to enhance the meal. 2. Servers didn't give us regular utensils , so you might need them, if you are "Chopstick challenge". Don't know if that is a thing or they just forgot. 3. We enjoyed our meal and had enough for leftovers. My spouse dumped the Beef and Broccoli into the Chicken Garlic Sauce cuz we both loved the flavor. Tomorrow both meals will taste better with the two sauces mixed together. Price - 4 Stars. NOTE: the Tea is priced at $10 which seems expensive but not really cuz it served both of us and the servers made sure we had hot water for our tea leaves. We ordered the green beans with bamboo shoots, wonton in chili oil, and the crab tofu + two bowls of rice. The service was really good - I asked if there was free restaurant tea (as with typical Chinese places) and they didn't have it for free but offered to give me hot water instead. I appreciated this gesture. The green beans were really good and was the best dish for us. The wonton chili oil wasn't bad but it wasn't great either - just ok. The crab tofu was on the signature menu + another reviewer recommended it as well but I really have to say I was disappointed with this dish. It lacked flavoring and was actually difficult for us to finish it with our bowls of rice. We only finished the green beans and wonton chili oil. The restroom was also very disappointing. The toilet itself was clean but there were wet puddles around the toilet. I also absolutely hate establishments that water down their hand soap. We were actually situated right by the toilet and it didn't smell though, so saving grace there. Overall, we went because of good reviews but I think it was just ok in terms of food and the disappointing restroom. The service was good though. The food here is so good! I came here on a wednesday night and it wasn't too busy, we sat right away and once we ordered the food came out super fast. We ordered the peking duck, orange chicken, beef tripe in chili, crispy cucumbers, tang yuan, double skin custard, and black chicken garlic soup, and all of it was so yummy. This is a fairly new joint, so perhaps that's why it's not happening as of yet. Went on a Friday night, and we didn't have to make a reservation. I called a few minutes ago to check if there's room for a group of three. They said come on into the restaurant. The place is opened from Mon-Thurs from 11-10 and Fri-Sat from 11-10:30. They have spicy food and the service was great. We ordered a small serving of the Dan Dan noodles with minced pork, which wasn't too spicy. It was tasty. Got the Yeung Chow Fried Rice, which was a fairly big serving since it was an entree. Surprising gem in heart of midtown. Above average hot and sour soup. Very tasty cucumber starter with herb "pesto". And I really loved the tofu mushroom dish a lot, the tofu was well-cooked, the sauce had some serious umami. This was a 9/10 dish. The real kicker that takes this to 5 stars is the service--prompt, attentive, and kind. Maybe I'm in a giving mood with 5, but it feels crappy to give them a 4 with the service and tofu dish being so stellar. So delicious! We had the spicy dry pot 麻辣干锅, pickled fish 酸菜鱼 and kang pao chicken 宫保鸡丁. Everything was really really authentic and good. The Kang pao chicken is even a tiny bit spicy just like it should be! The spicy dry pot is filled with stuff, some are weird, but all tasty (fish, lotus root, tripe, spam?, Chicken wings [strange choice], tofu, shrimp, bok choi, beef, potato slices). Unless you like things super spicy I would recommend medium spicy. If I had to complain about something I would say the spam in the spicy dry pot is too salty for me (think thick tender pepperoni) but since you're supposed to eat that dish with rice. Wow I really enjoyed Oohu! I was nearby the area and was actually going to head to Ktown, but stumbled upon this restaurant and decided to check it out since it is Michelin recommended. It's very close to the train station too which is very convenient. The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. And had a range of comfortable seating. We ordered the steamed pork dumplings, curry pineapple fried rice with shrimp, Singapore mei fun and a eggplant and green beans stir fry. All of these dishes were delicious! I was surprised to say that the green beans and eggplant was my favorite. The texture and flavors were perfect. Crisp but not too crunchy green beans. Came here to get my craving for drypot satisfied. This place did not disappoint. Spice level adequate. The spicy drypot has no customization, but they put all the staples of a proper drypot mix so I'm very happy. The portion is enough for 2-3 people. I got their enhanced pork lunch special only because I had no idea what that could be and there were no pictures on Yelp. Turns out it's delicious, slices of shaved pork with some peppers and green onions. I also asked for the wonton soup to start and fried rice. My only issue is everything was SO oily, I think next time I'll just get the white rice which will balance out the pork and it'll be perfect. I highly recommend this rebrand of the Lan Sheng establishment. Lan Sheng rebranded recently into OOHU. The signage outside is confusing as they have both OOHU and Lan Sheng outside, but the menu only shows OOHU and the waitress confirmed they rebranded and the menu was modified as well from the original restaurant. I originally saw this place when it was Lan Sheng on IG and the food looked good. Surprised that it's so perfectly centered in Midtown. I finally came in to try it. I ended up getting the following: Crispy Cucumber w. Scallion Pesto $7.95 ChongQing Chili Fried Chicken $20.95 XinJiang cumin Lamb $22.95 Double Cooked Pork w/ spicy Capsicum $18 No I didn't finish all of the food there, but I got to try everything but the cumin lamb fresh on the spot. The cucumbers were good. They are not smashed and made with a darker chili sauce. I think the Chongqing chicken is just a tad over-fried, but perfect flavor and they made it extra mala for me. The double cooked pork was possibly the best rendition I had ever had. Flavorful, generous portions of tender pork. Lots of veggies and peppers too. The cumin lamb was also really good. Well seasoned and also excellently cooked. The staff was also top notch and perhaps had best understanding or ability to speak English in any NYC Szechuan restaurant I've been to.
