I can't say enough positive things about Ammathar -- formerly Thai Tanic. I have lived around the corner for 21 years and have likely visited this restaurant 50-60 times. It is my go-to when people come to DC to visit. Recently, they made some menu changes and I am loving the food even more. There are plenty of options and everything I've had has been delicious. Spicy, not spicy, Thai spicy... Fresh veggies, drunken noodles... Everything. Over the many years, I have not loved 100% of every meal, but no one loves every dish that someone else makes from a culture that is foreign to them. But it wasn't because the food was bad or cooked poorly, per se. And the wait staff is fabulous. One server is beyond the best server I have ever had. He is so friendly and helpful. A month ago when I was there, we asked about a specific Thai ingredient in the dish. He explained it to us and then came back 5 minutes later with some information on his phone for us to look at for more info. Last night, we were lucky enough to have him as our server again. Again, he was extra helpful with questions. My young nieces come to visit DC occasionally, and they are very clear that each visit MUST include a trip to Ammathar. Solid spot for classic, decently affordable Thai food at a cozy, no-frills spot located on 14th Street and just a few blocks away from Logan Circle. I dropped by Ammathar for dinner with a friend who was visiting from out of town and deeply craving Thai iced tea, and we had a great time here. It's a relatively quiet restaurant, so it was perfect for us to hole up in for several hours and catch up about life and all that had happened since their last visit to DC. The staff was super friendly, and I appreciated how long they let us hang around the restaurant after we had finished eating. It wasn't a huge problem for us, since we were spending so much time yapping, but it did feel like the place was a smidge understaffed. The food took quite a while to come out, and the poor singular waitress seemed a little bit overwhelmed with the four or five tables that came in and out during our time there. Again, it wasn't necessarily problematically slow for me since we weren't in a rush, but I might recommend trying a different spot if you are in a hurry. Their food is all solid. The menu is quite large, so it was a bit hard to choose what I wanted, but I eventually settled on the pumpkin and shrimp red curry. It was super warm and comforting, with the spices from the red curry and the rich, mushy pumpkin adding to the cold weather / autumnal vibes. The shrimp was nice and tender, and they packed a great seafood flavor. My friend got their fried pork belly, which was also quite tasty; it was tender, fatty, and had a great balance of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. read more

My friend and I went to this Thai restaurant for the first time. Service was great, but there were some other not-so-good things. The table had crumbs on the seats, which implied to me that it hadn't been cleaned. The food was not so good too. The veggie spring rolls were mostly batter and had very little filling, which to me implied they were store bought frozen and simply reheated. The green curry I got was grainy, as if the curry paste was not fully resolved. The bamboo shoots were stringy and not tender at all. The tofu in it tasted old and tough. My friend enjoyed her noodle dish, and the mango sticky rice was very delicious, but I couldn't get over the other downsides. For the prices they charge, I'd recommend trying other Thai places over this one. read more

So we stayed in the hotel for delivery YUM PED YANG Roasted duck shredded and tossed with ginger, scallions, celery, cilantro, and chili paste in a spicy lime juice. THAI STAR Minced chicken and bell peppers sautéed with fresh chili sauce and accompanied by whole shrimp and Hoi Jor (shrimp, minced chicken, and herbs blended to perfection, wrapped in tofu, deep fried). This must have tasted amazing freshly served in the restaurant because the driver seemed to have gotten lost because it look longer than GrubHubs estimate of delivery, so it came just lukewarm and it's still amazingly delicious! Great local neighborhood place. Food always comes out with a spicy flavor so watch out. Great service as always from Taeng (?). She has been here almost every visit and always 5* service. This time, I had the Red Curry Chicken with extra peppers. I love extra veggies in my curry dishes. It was a little spicy but very manageable. This is a cute neighborhood place. Stopped by for lunch, and was immediately taken care of which was nice. Ordered a thai tea, tom yum, and some curry. The tom yum had a good amount of veggies in it, but not the most flavorful. Haekun $9 - totally recommend. The sweet plum sauce was a delicious pairing. Thai Lemongrass $16 - came with a bowl of rice, spice, and flavor was delectable. Will be back for this! I've picked up food from here a couple of times in the last few years since it's quite close to my apartment. It's always been fine in a pinch, but today I ordered pad kee Mao and it had a bunch of old and soft veggies in it. Key example if this piece of tomato that has a super soft spot on it, maybe it was turning rotten already. The bell peppers were also a little soft and the green beans were also a bit limp. Not sure how business is going, but serving food with old veggies certainly isn't going to help. The people who work there are quite nice, so it's really a shame. They should serve fresher food. read more

I was disappointed with this place. We were the last take out to order and a couple of things warranted 3 stars: 1) curry chicken Panang was plain -nothing on the curry just sauce and chicken. Sticky rice wasn't really sticky We ordered papaya salad, Tom yum soup, Pad See Eew. Considering the Pad See Eew & Panang was $16.00 & $15.00 per dish it wasn't worth the money. This location used to be Thai Tanic. Their name change confused me. The website says coming soon for Thai Tanic (it was there circa 2001-?) What a great time to be on 14th Street NW. On to the review: For a cold December's night, Ammathar's takeout counter was bustling. The restaurant was half full but got busier after we sat down in the window booth looking out to 14th street. A great booth if you can grab it! The staff were friendly, over worked with the consistent clientele coming in for take out orders. The place has a lot going and considering it, the food came out quickly. The menu is pretty extensive and authentic. A new dish I hadn't tried -- chicken stuffed tapioca. We started off with these as an appetizer and waited for our mains. They were interesting-- and, very chewy! The spice and flavor in the food is intense. If you don't like heat -- ask for mild. I enjoy a kick with my curry- but this certainly packed an extra punch. Overall, the meal was quick, authentic, and prepared well. The man who came in to use the bathroom and got locked in as well as the takeout line in the middle of the place kind of made things a bit strange. But, also, interesting! read more

I was a long-time customer of Ammathar, but recently they have really gone downhill. The last--and probably really last--time I went, I brought guests. We ordered the whole fried fish at a cost of $67. They informed us that we could only order the larger, $75 whole fried fish. It was so horrifically overdone that no one could eat it. It was like charred cardboard Ammathar would NOT take the fish back. They insisted that we pay the full $75 for the severely overcooked fish even though it was inedible. Absolutely horrible customer service. I will never go back to Ammathar again. read more

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars but I love Thai food in general so 4 it is. Ammathar provides a tasty, if not quite perfect, dining experience. I ordered the pad see ew and a chicken satay. The pad see ew was delicious and I would get it again. The ingredients were all in good proportion to each other and well-balanced. I would have liked a little more browning on the noodles, and the beef was chewier than expected, but it was still solid overall. The chicken satay was sliced too thickly, in my opinion, and so the lovely grilled flavor and marinade didn't get all the way through the meat. However, the peanut sauce that it came with was amazing. I saved the rest (they included quite a large container!) and drizzled it onto meal after meal the rest of the week. Ammathar feels like a reliable weeknight dinner, an enjoyable, but perhaps not craveable, restaurant. read more

I am starting this review by bashing anyone that gives this place under 4 stars. In my opinion, Ammathar is the pinnacle of authentic Thai food. In a city where I have struggled to connect with Asian food of various cultures, I found myself getting a little emotional here. I found myself staring at the menu for 10 minutes, just struggling to decide what I wanted because there were foods that I had no clue existed, foods that looked incredible, and just so many options. I started off with the chicken stuffed tapioca. It was one of the most interesting textures of a dish I've ever had. Tapioca is something I've had mostly in bubble teas but I've never had it as one of the main components of the dish. It brought a nice chewy texture to the outside while the chicken was well seasoned on the inside. Combined with the crunch of the peanuts, this was an unexpected feeling for my palate, but the good type of unexpected. I then got the param long song (chicken breast in a yellow curry and peanut sauce mix). In a chicken dish, the chicken should be the star, but the real winner was the sauce. There was an abundance of flavor permeating throughout the dish which felt like my tongue was on a celebration of Thailand. The harmony between the yellow curry and the peanut sauce made me want to go in for another bite, but there was a tinge of sadness through each bite, as I knew I was nearing the end of the dish, and thus my happy celebration. In the span of 1.5 hours in the middle of Thomas Circle, I was transported to Thailand and back. read more

Ammathar was such a nice gem, it was empty when I went so the service was fast and excellent. It is a great spot for casual thai food. The papaya salad was very refreshing and not too spicy which happens to be the case with many of them. The pineapple fried rice was divine and the sweetness was not too overwhelming rather welcomed with the dish. Not good but not bad. It's disappointing to me that the only Thai restaurant on 14th street is mediocre. I came here with a friend for dinner one night. The inside of the restaurant is boring and there wasn't any background music playing. The Chicken Stuffed Tapioca did not have as much chicken stuffed inside as my friend and I would have liked. The Soft-Shell Crab Pad Thai could have used a little more sauce and flavor, and more could have been done to incorporate the soft-shell crab into the dish rather than just dropping it on top with no sauce or seasoning. The Crispy Duck was very heavy and fried, and the dish could have been balanced out better with an acidic component. read more

The food was cold and mediocre, and the wait staff was not even trying to take your order / deliver the meal while it was warm / follow up. We felt as if we were invisible, as did the patrons at the tables next to us. Not to worry " we will NOT be back" to give them a second chance. We sat for quite a while and she removed plates and kept our waters refilled. It was great. Food- share shrimp cakes and dumplings. Super fresh and crispy. I ordered food for delivery from here. In the instructions, I put to call or text when the food was delivered. Over an hour passed and the app still showed my food as being prepared. I finally called the restaurant and they told me it had been dropped off forty minutes ago. I told them no one had contacted me and it was still showing as preparing in the app and they just said "Okay!" and hung up. The food was fine, average to below average, but also hard to judge since it was cold. I wouldn't normally let a delivery experience impact my review, but in this case the food was delivered by the restaurant and not through DoorDash, etc. Was extremely frustrating as not only was I starving from waiting so long, but I had cold food that I pretipped on and seemingly no recourse. This place was so cute! It is not the fanciest restaurant, but the exterior is adorable with these hanging flowers. The inside is bright blue and colorful, which made for a fun atmosphere. Honestly, I was overwhelmed with the menu options. There were so many different dishes that looked phenomenal and I liked that the menu included pictures of some of the food. Additionally, as a vegetarian you could make almost any dish vegetarian with either vegetables or tofu! I am not used to having so many available choices, so that certainly left an impression on me. The food itself was delicious. I enjoyed eating here because the Green curry I got was very spicy - which I love! The tofu was also nice and crispy. I also got fried spring rolls which came with a sweet dipping sauce, and the rice paper rolls which came with a peanut sauce. The green curry was the best part though. Short and sweet...I have been in DC all week for a business meeting. Working long days and not craving overpriced hotel food I decided to walk to a Thai restaurant about a bloc away. I sat at the bar and ordered some takeout. It was not busy at all while. I specifically asked for massuman curry with chicken, NO onions. Got my meal and headed back to my hotel. Shame on me, I should have checked. Got to my room, my meal had a lot of onions. They charged me 5 cents for the takeout bag, with no mention. However, neglected putting silverware or napkins in paid bag. I could have gone back out and asked for those things but quite frankly after working almost 12 hours I was simply tired and hungry. Some of these places need to be more aware of their customers circumstances, special food needs, providing proper utensils to enjoy their meal with, etc. my bill with 1 small appetizer was $37, not chump change. First, I love Thai food! So I'm always down to try a new spot in DC. Now, Ammathar is not new...i just hadn't tried it yet. My first visit was for takeout. I ordered the Drunken Noodles w/tofu and a Tom Yum soup. The drunken noodles were good, though much more oily than I prefer. I got the medium-spicy level and it was perfect. I like spicy food and I'd say the medium-spicy level provides kick without being overwhelming. Sadly, the Tom Yum was not the best I've had. It too seemed a bit oily. The food was prepared timely. Perhaps the dine in experience is better. While this wouldn't be my go-to spot, I wouldn't rule it out for takeout. read more

YES YES YES! So good, so delicious!! This is a must go to and repeat kind of place. I stopped in for a drink and something light to eat. I started with a lychee martini at the bar and it was fruity, sweet, colorful and chilled. I ordered the Kanom Jeep appetizer. It has a nice presentation, was served quickly, perfect temperature and I loved how the sauce for dipping was blanketing the dish. It was so good and I ate them all!! I then ordered the spicy beef salad. The presentation was beautiful and the flavors were sweet with a little fire. The lettuce was fresh and the ingredients were crispy. It was wonderful. I stopped here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon with my wife and son. Both of them are vegetarians and my wife is Gluten intolerant. The staff was great helping to figure out what meals would work. I had the red curry and Tofu which was very good. My wife had the lemon grass vegetables with tofu and she really enjoyed it. I would highly recommend the food here. read more
