It is situated at the hippest and most bustling part of Edison NJ; however, Dunhuang is tugged away in the far end corner, out of sight. So the fact that the restaurant was almost at capacity during our visit spoke volumes. It meant the clientele knew the place. Armed with recommended dishes from my brother, we were unphased by the vast offerings in the menu and placed order in no time: C8. Cold Skin Noodles $9.95. This is a unique appetizer from Northern China. This was the second time in my life that I tried this dish. It was far better than my first experience. It was refreshingly cold, and the flavor wasn't as heavy as it looked. The texture of the noodle was elastic and springy, very pleasing to the mouth. Highly recommended. N1. Signature Lan Zhou Beef Noodles $10.95. I guarantee you will see at least one bowl of this noodle soup on every table. While I have had this dish many times through Chinatown and Flushing, the broth had to be one of the best. The amount of protein left much to be desired, however. Only 4 thin slices of beef, that's a bit pathetic. Other than that, all other aspects were on point. N8. Pan Fried Noodles (lamb) $16.95. OK, don't be fooled by the name - we were. We love pan fried noodles from Hong Kong / Cantonese restaurants - that thin crispy fried noodles with thick flavorful sauce and meat poured over it... No, this was stir fried, essentially a lo mien. So this was a disappointment, but the saving grace was that we picked lamb for the protein. When was the last time you had lamb lo mien? Service was excellent. The wait staff entered orders on their hand held tablets, and checked out with them as well. But, remember to bring cash to get a 3% discount.

This place is really good! They always seat us right away with friendly and fast service. I usually get the spicy oil spill noodles but this time tried pan fried veg noodles. They were good but I'm going to stick to the oil spill from now on. They have good music playing and it's cozy

Normally I don't write bad reviews, this time I compelled to do it. Food tastes good, authentic, so I was excited to try it. For snack I figure to tried the famous lamb burger/sandwich. It was on the expensive side, $7/ea. It was on a dry bun with less than an ounce of mince lamb. This was smaller than a McDonald hamburger. Very disappointing. I hope owners can fix this.

Always a comfort pick! Great food for a good price!! I've been coming here since day one when they only had one table in the middle. I always get the lanzhou beef noodle soup here and it's consistently amazing! The soup is always so hard warming and yummy. Their noodles are hand pulled and you can watch them make it. And, best part, they're under $10! I also love their cucumber salad, fried chicken, and spicy dry noodles. The dry noodles would be infinitely better with meat though. The service is always fast and attentive. All the waiters and waitresses are always nice. It can sometimes be a bit noisy but that's because the place is quite small. Braised Beef Noodles was delicious. Clean beef noddle broth flavors but still good. I really like the fresh noodles. I ordered regular thickness. My boyfriend prefers the wide noodles. The Multi-Spiced Beef W. Cilantro is seasoned perfectly with a little kick to it. And the beef is tender. Super quick service.

I came here for the first time w/ a friend on a Saturday afternoon, and there was no wait. We quickly got seated and even quickly received our food. Quick and delicious handpulled noodles with hot broth - yes please! I like how you can customize the noodle type to your preference. The spicy beef slices and cold potato dishes were great little appetizers and were full of flavor. Service is efficient and the restaurant itself is super clean and well organized. There's a little glass window by the kitchen that allows customers to watch the noodle master make the noodles which is pretty cool!

Came here a couple of times. Their beef skewers are unbeatable. The dishes derive from the north part of China. The restaurant has many seats, but sometimes can be very busy. The ambiance is like any other restaurant. They do however have a cool window where you can see the noodles being made from scratch. Great little thing to keep the kids occupied. Service great but the food is even better. The noodles, you can pick how wide or how thin you want them. I usually get the wide flat noodles with the signature dish. It might actually be BYOB too. Double check on that. If you're in the area, definitely check them out and get the skewers.

came here twice, so i'm combining both visits. Their noodle is good and cheap, nothing more you can ask for under $10! The appetizers were alright. we found the fried items were too oily (fries, fried bread). they just soaked in a lot of oil. so I would avoid getting those. It is the restaurant tucked in the corner, easily missed if you aren't looking. I will definitely return for more noodles!!!

Even though I've been here around the time it opened 5-6 years ago, I recently rediscovered the place and has become by my new favorite restaurant. We've been coming here once a week over the last month or so. I always get the liangpi, aka cold noodles, which you don't seen often in Chinese restaurants. These are the traditional cold noodles from the region, made from rice flour, and dressed in a peanut sauce. It's my absolute favorite things to eat. The other must order dish is the lamb skewers, perfectly cooked and well seasoned. The hand pulled noodles are always a big hit, you can customize the thickness and they come in clear or spicy broth. Service is always prompt and friendly. Moreover, the food comes out extremely fast. Always a great experience here.

The delicious lamb skewers here make it hard to share 10 with a group of people. This place is nestled away at the end of the shopping center which makes it a little hard to find but the food here is pretty good. The menu is also pretty simple so that was nice. Service was fast and the waiter was attentive to ensure we had water or tea. The beef noodle soups here were also pretty good and hits the spot especially on a cold winter night in this area.

My wife and I stopped in for a weekday lunch. Every table was seated, but the turnaround was quick (5-10 min). Watching a chef make the hand pulled noodles made it easy to pass the time! The staff was curt and a bit lacking in warmth, but efficient at taking orders and clearing tables for new guests. Whatever was lacking in service was easily made up for by the delicious meal. We both ordered the braised beef noodles. I went with thick noodles and Kiana opted for regular. She made the better choice. The regular noodles are the perfect thickness for both absorbing the flavor of the broth without becoming soggy and giving you something to sink your teeth into. And how about that broth? It was aromatic and rich in flavor with some enhancing spice. The beef was tender as anything. I only wish there was more. We also ordered five lamb skewers. The meet was cooked well, but we thought the seasoning was too heavy handed. The cumin was overpowering. The hand pulled noodles made the meal, and I look forward to trying their signature beef noodles next time around!

I had the recommended beef noodles it was really delicious very strong ginger taste. I will say for anyone that is looking to try the noodles it's Yummy and not very spicy but it leaves a lingering garlicky ginger-ish sort of taste in your mouth which is pretty pleasant. I also got the lamb and that was the licious a little too gave me for my taste but nonetheless very good with a white rice. Note that it does not come with White rice so you have to ask for it separately but I do recommend that you get it. I've been trying to locate a Chinese northern place that does their own noodles so this was a good spot. I can't wait to actually go to the restaurant once quarantine is over and actually experience other dishes there. read more

This is place is actually so good... come if you want to get authentic northwestern Chinese food. We got the beef noodle, lamb kabobs, and the big plate chicken and all of them were delicious!!! Could not ask for more here in the US read more

Ate there today for Chinese New Year. I am now being food poisoned. Having stomach pain in the middle of the night and dealing with diarrhea. Their plates and chopsticks were dirty during dining, I ordered their special "dish" - which was fried little fish served cold with mouthful of oil, which was so disappointing. Their lamb leg was so small for the price charged. Never go back here again. No wonder this place is never that crowded compare to the other places in the plaza. read more

First time I went, the food was around a 3/5, I guess I wasn't a fan of what I ordered. I had ordered the Lanzhou beef noodle soup. Unfortunately it was just loaded with chili oil and didn't have much flavor depth. Best thing I had that time was the lamb cumin burger. My second time, the food was a 5/5. I ordered the Braised beef noodle soup. I've had a lot of Chinese beef noodle soups and I can definitively say this is the best one I've ever had. The broth flavor was rich, layered, and encompassed many satisfying notes. The beef itself had the right amount of fat and flavor for my palate. The noodles are superb and you can tell they are hand pulled. For some reason the smell of the soup reminds me a little of Alfredo sauce (not sure why, but I do love Alfredo) I ended up ordering a total of 4 Braised beef noodle soups (2 for me and 2 for others). Unfortunately, one of them looked a little different (almost like it had a different amount of chili oil). They all tasted great and the same. Highly recommend this dish. I could eat it every day of my life and not get sick of it. I would give them 5/5, but I don't feel the rest of the food I've tried there has been above 4 stars. EDIT: I've went back here several times since my last review. The food has improved in quality. For example, the Lanzhou beef noodle soup tasted better the last time I've tried it. I've also tried their lamb kebabs, which were succulent and juicy. I think I've found several more 5/5 items, so I update my review to 4.75 (5/5). The only complaint I've heard from other customers that I've brought was the amount of fat on the Braised beef noodle soup, some say it is too high compared to the meat ratio, and opted to selectively remove the fat. I personally love fat, so I don't mind. As far as the waiters/waitresses I've noticed they don't always ask what type of noodle thickness I want with my soup. They are attentive and polite. read more

Ordered oil spill noodles and payed extra to add beef. Also ordered spicy glass noodles. Both incredibly tasty and flavorful. If you like thick chewy hand pulled noodles you will not be disappointed. Oil spill noodles is better of the two. Very nice intense garlicky and spicy flavor. read more

I'm new to authentic Gansu cuisine, but I think this was an excellent introduction. The Lanzhou beef noodle soup is reminiscent of both ramen and pho, with a rich, chili- and cilantro-heavy beef stock, thin slices of well-done beef, and a few translucent slices of daikon radish poured over springy homemade wheat noodles. I also tried the same noodles pan-fried with chicken and vegetables of the day, which came with plenty of Szechuan pepper in the mix, the way I like it. I'll be saving those leftovers for a very nice lunch tomorrow. The sleeper hit in my half of the order was the sweet, fruity 8 Treasure tea, which comes with the ingredients floating in the tea so that you can appreciate the quality of the whole leaves and fruits in it. I even tried snacking on the crushed red dates after drinking the tea, and they were pretty nice! My other half got the cold wood ear mushroom salad, the lamb kebab, and the Chongqing spicy chicken. They were respectively: the best wood ear mushrooms I've had; a fascinating Indian fusion, redolent of cumin and garlic; and, in his words, "the best popcorn chicken ever". In my words, the Chongqing chicken is another menu standout, also very heavy on the Szechuan pepper and perfectly crisp. I occasionally have texture problems with wood ear mushrooms, but these were almost like thin soup dumplings with a glass-noodle snap to them. We ordered takeout this time, but Dunhuang is good enough that it's worth visiting for indoor dining. read more

Went there for lunch. Did not expect much since the reviews on yelp weren't high and menu is quit small. Ordered sour soup noodle, pan fried noodle, chicken wings, Chinese burger. Pan fried noodle was okay. Chicken wing was good. Sour soup noodle was REALLY good! Its not soupy at all. Its more of a sauce like not soup like. Add hot oil to it to make it even better. read more

This is not even close to Xian Famous Foods. I was missing Xian badly and drove 20 minutes here. I am on day 2 of food poisoning symptoms. I understand businesses are trying their best during COVID but I could taste the rancid canola/veg oil in the chili sauce and immediately stopped eating the Oil spill noodles. I wish Xian would come to Highland Park already :( read more

I've been on the hunt for biang biang noodles in Jersey (after trying Xian Famous Noodles in NYC) and I have to say, this place hits the spot. The spice oil noodles are pulled to order and seasoned perfectly with a slightly vinegary and spicy oil blend; I've already ordered these twice, and highly recommend them to anyone. Once, I mixed it with the cumin lamb skewers, and that combination was phenomenal (I really wish it were an option on the menu, as the custom combo costs around 22 dollars in total and is hardly sustainable haha). Besides the noodles, the Chinese lamb hamburger is delicious and pretty economical; as with everything else, the seasoning is great, and the bread is also quite delicious. Unsurprisingly, I've also ended up ordering that again! read more

Ordered takeout - signature beef noodle. Great chewy noodles, flavorful tendony sliced beef, but felt the portion was small. The chili oil really enhanced the flavor!I like the flavor of the clear broth but found it too salty. Worth going back to try other menu items but I compare this beef noodle to Noodle Time nearby and 100% would prefer Noodle Time's spicy beef noodle over this one. Also got a jajangmein. Very flavorful but there's a note of dried orange peel that Im not a fan of. read more

We ordered 'Braised Beef Noodle' but got this clear noodle soup with some hot oil, which was clearly a mistake so we asked the waiter. He apologized and then gave us the 'new' noodle which is exactly the same one but COVERED ALL OVER with red oil. It was the grossest thing ever and we really cannot accept this kind of service...two days later, my friend went and ordered the exact same thing and obviously got the totally different noodle as it was supposed to be (from picture three) it was definitely one of the most horrible experience I ever had in my life. I will not recommend this place to people because once they got busy they treat customers like retards. read more

Really, really good Lanzhou beef noodles. They soup is just average by itself but if you add the chili oil on top, it gets much better. The noodles are customizable by size if you want thinner or thicker noodles, and the cuts of beef are pretty good too. Not too thin, not too thick, and has slight bits of fat on it. There's also a few pieces of daikon, which helps keep the dish light and adds variety to the textures. The only things holding the dish from 5 stars is the consistency of the noodles sometimes being a little doughy and the dish being slightly salty read more

The most popular dish here is the N1 (the signature Loan Zhou noodle soup). I can't take spice so I order it without the chili oil, but my friends who enjoy spice also really like this dish. I wish there were more veggies in this dish though. There are other dishes on the menu, but just never got around to trying then. Would definitely recommend if you're craving some beef noodle soup! You're also given a free dessert if you write a review, but you're not allowed to choose it. I couldn't try it because the assigned dessert had peanuts in it, but my friends described it as a dessert soup with a bunch of random things in it. read more

We are so disappointed to have their lamb skewers. They gave us super tiny meat and half of the lamb meat are fat. We never felt like this disappointed before. We felt like being scammed when we saw the lamb meat. I wouldn't recommend you order their lamb skewers if you are trying to order. But we love the noodle. read more

Been here twice now and this place is excellent for authentic Western Chinese food that's not prevalent in American Chinese restaurants. The food here hails from the eponymous city of Dunhuang, in Gansu province in China's western hinterlands. Similar to Xian Famous Foods (from nearby Shaanxi province), the food here has a definite Muslim influence combined with Northern Chinese wheat-based dishes which explains the abundance of lamb, flatbreads, and hearty thick noodle soups. Try the lamb burger, lamb skewers, and the wood-ear mushroom salad for appetizers and the famous Lanzhou beef noodle soup for a main course. You'll definitely feel full and satisfied! read more

Langzhou signature beef noodles are delicious! I asked for less spicy, because last time they were so spicy I was in tears and had to dunk my noodles in water (and they were still too spicy). My spice tolerance is also pretty good, so this place is really next level. Less spicy beef noodles are great, and I can add chili oil on my own to perfect levels of spiciness. read more

The Yelp reviews are accurate and truthful. The food is great. This is a small cafe with only approximately eight tables. I do not recommend large parties of five and greater. It is no-frills, but not exactly "hole in the wall" type that lack in aesthetics for upscale lavish atmosphere but the deficiency is resolved in the food quality. There is one sole functioning restroom in the whole business, ergo, stand in line and wait. We entered hungry in a lugubrious sense of deep sorrow, but exited hunger pangs fulfilled. When exiting upon completion of our lunch meal, there was a line that quickly formed outdoors waiting. Unfortunately, access to this cafe in Edison, NJ is by car only and there is a free parking lot that is shared with neighboring businesses located in a small shopping complex. There are no business cards, and no takeout menus available. Customer service is efficient as the staff worked methodically hustling busy to take orders and fulfillment. Our male waiter was attentive to respond to our inquiries and make suggestions based on our desires. I was able to keep the sales receipt. Price is in the rationale realm of stagflation totaling $41.75. Nota Bene: No table hibernation as the table turnover is fast pace with a line overflowing outdoors which cannot interrupt the flow. Preserved cabbage with pork noodle soup, syut3 coi3 juk6 si1 min6, 雪菜肉絲麵 $9.50 This is a satisfying Chinese comfort food. This noodle soup was abundant with noodles, pork and chopped vegetables. It provided warmth to my very broken heart. Shanghai chicken in wine sauce, zeoi3 gai1, 醉雞, $8.95 A traditional Chinese cold appetizer, aka Chinese Drunken chicken made with Chinese Shaoxing cooking wine. It has amazing flavor and texture to be deliciously enticing. Of course, the cooking wine brings flavor to this appetizer making you want more. We're debating coming back to try more of the menu but with so many Asian/Chinese restaurants to try in Edison, I think we'd try someplace else.

Although not easy to find on the tail end of a nondescript commercial strip, we saw its sign and walked in to a decent sized dining room with a half dozen booths along one wall and about a dozen tables spread across the remainder. Plenty of original watercolors displayed and for sale on the walls. David the proprietor seemed to be handling most of the operation himself. He sat us, took our order, disappeared into the kitchen to participate in its preparation and served our four courses to us in traditional style - separately as ready. The food was excellent. We chose from both the lunch and regular menu, which were integrated seamlessly. Fried Pork Chop, Crispy Fried Intestine, Fish Fillets in Chili Sauce from the mains, and Orange Beef from the lunch list. I started with Hot &Sour Soup, which was flavorful and loaded with tofu, sprouts, pork slivers and potent vinegar. Loved it! The Pork Chop was deboned and pressed thin. The result was a crisp sliced Katsu-like cutlet with nice flavor and long crunchy chew. The Intestine was also crisp and filled with green beans that mixed well with the hardened shell and soft innards. Not my fave, but my lovely partner ate it enthusiastically. The Fish and Chili was very good, with tender lightly breaded white fish fillets and red chili sauce that included small pieces of celery, sprouts and cabbage, in a large bowl. Finally, the lunch sized Orange Beef was delicious with sweet and spicy amber sauce coating the pieces of lightly crisped beef. Ubiquitous broccoli sprigs added color to the dish. Service was friendly and accommodating. David was happy to interact and talk about his business there. Red Onion is a Five Star keeper.

The food was impeccable!! There was about a 30 minute wait and they do seem very busy and kind of understaffed. Given that this is a new restaurant, I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they are still getting the hang of it. The waiters are obviously trying their best to attend to everyone. But as I said everything we ordered was amazing. The best items are the Lanzhou beef noodle, I got the thin one and it was perfect thickness. The buns are also very good with fluffy and light dough, I got both lamb and beef. Their lamp dishes are all very good. Definitely worth coming back. read more

It's definitely one of my favorite hand-pull noodles places in NJ. The braised beef noodle soup was delicious with tender morsels of beef in a flavorful soup base. I drink up all the soup! It's the authentic Lanzhuo style, which reminds me the time I was there. Highly recommend! I also love cumin braised lamb. The lamb is so delicate, fatty, and tender, and the subdued gaminess couples with the cumin with an incredible fragrance that is indescribable. With the sweetness of the bell peppers . One of my fav Chinese restaurants ever, this isn't your typical Chinese takeout place. Its authentic Chinese cuisine and they make the noodles in house. You can see the cook in the back pound the flour and stretch the noodles out, like a show and eating. My family comes here for the soups which always hits the spot. You can pick thin or thick noodles, personally I like thinner noodles and the side dishes you should order are definitely the beef and cabbage plates. Its in the same plaza as Hmart too so its always an option when we want to go out and eat. read more

Beware! Don't use credit card in this chinese resturant! They served us bad food and I paid the food not tip! Also politely wrote my review on the receipt. But, they modified my receipt and still charged the tip! That is technically a theft! I heard the similar experience from others about being charged more tip than they actually wrote down. They just think people don't really look that their bank statements and found out a few dollar is missing. read more

Went there to get take out last night, and I ordered a lamb burger and small lamb kabobs. Then I got a pork burger instead of lamb burger prices r different, and small lamb kabob should be 5 sticks but instead of stick they just put the lamb in a plastic box and very small portions doesn't seem like 5 sticks at all..... no good don't think I would go for a long time read more
