Dunne's Ice Cream is a popular seasonal ice cream parlor that opened in York, Maine in 2015. It was founded by Stephen Dunne. The roots of the ice cream parlor, however, go all the way back to 1967. At that time, husband and wife Byron & Betty Brown, along with their two children, turned one of their cottages on the York Nubble into an ice cream parlor that they dubbed "Brown's Old Fashioned Ice Cream". The Browns made their own ice cream on the premises. The business was very successful for multiple decades, but by 1990 they had closed down. Dunne, a civil engineer by trade, was originally from New Jersey (and then Connecticut) but had purchase some property in York. In 1991, Dunne entered into an agreement with the Browns. He would purchase and reopen Brown's but leased the building and the land from the Browns. Dunne also chose Shain's of Maine Ice Cream to be the ice cream supplier. The following year, Dunne married Phyllis Fox: owner of Fox's Lobster House which is also located on the York Nubble. In 2014, the property owner decided to sell the land that Brown's was located on, so it closed down. The Dunnes decided to build a brand new ice cream parlor 300 feet down the street which they dubbed "Dunne's Ice Cream". Today Dunne's carries more than 50 flavors of ice cream, as well as frozen yogurt, soft serve, no sugar added ice cream, sherbet, sorbet, smoothies, frappes, ice cream specialties, and even Dole Whip! My extended family and I visited Dunne's this past summer while we were on a week-long vacation in York. York has several great seasonal ice cream spots in town, but several locals told us to check out Dunne's. There was quite a crowd congregating there when we arrived one evening. We were able to grab a table outside to sit at. After looking over the extensive menu, I had a cup of "Shark Attack" (vanilla ice cream base with a raspberry swirl and raspberry chocolate truffles), my wife had a cup of "Maine Sea Salt Caramel Truffle", our older son had a cup of "Mint Oreo", and our younger son had a cup of "Cookies & Cream". The ice cream was out-of-this-world! We can see why Dunne's has quite a good reputation in a town that's full of great ice cream options. If you're planning on visiting York, we highly recommend a visit to Dunne's!

First time here. Even though I've driven by 100 times I finally stopped. Probably the best overview and scenic area to have ice cream ever! Absolutely beautiful looking at the lighthouse in the ocean while relaxing on a beautiful day. Service was fairly quick though disorganized stuff. But they got the job done!

Love this ice cream place! The location itself is really nice, in its own little area, with a lighthouse nearby. It's one of those shack type places, which always seem to be the best. They had tons of flavors and the employees were really sweet about explaining each one. Some of the flavors were especially inventive, which is the best. I'm not sure I'd be in this area again anytime soon, but if I was, I'd certainly go back!

This is exactly the old fashioned ice cream place we were looking for on vacation. Ordering with a teenager at the window, paying cash (no credit cards!) and off you go! Lots and lots of flavors and toppings to choose from. There was NO cell-service for us up here, its very close to the Nubble Lighthouse and I'm sure that the tourism brings them more customers- like us. I don't remember the flavors of the ice cream we got, but everything was good. Cant go wrong!

A great spot for ice cream! This is a fantastic place to stop for ice cream! They have a ton of flavors to choose from, but it can get pretty busy, and they tend to run out of some flavors later in the day. So, if you have a specific flavor in mind, it's best to come earlier. We ordered the coffee and pistachio flavors, and both were excellent. We were pleasantly surprised by how generous the portions were! The prices are great too. Just keep in mind that this is a cash-only shop, but there's an ATM on the side if you need it.

L to R: banana, chocolate peanut butter & cookie dough (all kiddie sizes) [cash only!]

My 2 year old son said he wanted banana ice cream 5 minutes before we arrived at Dunne's. They had it! We feel like he willed it into existence!! So kudos on an array of flavors (like planet earth.) Plenty of parking. Multiple lines taking and serving. It looked crowded but we were in and out (thank you- it was raining!) So much cookie dough (yay!) The chocolate peanut butter was creamy, very chocolatey but also had those chunks of peanut butter I was looking for. This place was a win!

Amazing ice cream. Creamy without being too rich or heavy, not overly sweet, and very even consistency. Best blueberry ice cream I've had in Maine. Usually, blueberry ice cream uses frozen blueberries and taste chalky. These tasted much more fresh and were well incorporated. My mom also tried it and was raving about it. She even considered packing a pint to bring back with us! Would highly recommend for anyone near Nubble. The table space was plentiful and the facilities were clean. Service was nice and quick!

Wow, we have driven past this place for years and finally stopped. The seasonal pumpkin ice cream was scrumptious! The best I have had. Wonderful flavor (cinnamon? Nutmeg?) and texture. Will go back before they close for the winter. Love the signage, too! Nice that Lady Gaga visited.

A small!!! Almond joy ice cream cone.

Delicious ice cream spot, it's understandable why we saw so many people walking from their houses to grab some. The sizes are HUGE! They offer kiddie, small and large for cups and cones. I ordered the small as did my daughter, and it was gigantic. See the pics. The flavors offered are significant, and the service is top-notch. I got a chocolate chip cup, which was delicious. My family got almond joy in a cone, mint oreo in a cup, black raspberry in a cup, and a mint oreo frappe. All received rave reviews. A couple of things to remember - it is windy! It's up on a hill, you can see Nubble Light and the ocean, beautiful but also windy! Bring cash. They only accept cash and do offer an ATM. We will come back..next time we will ask for more napkins and to get the smalls in the bigger cups..we had issues with the huge portions melting all over the smaller cups.

This is a nice ice cream place. Very busy. They only have outdoor seating. The ice cream was pretty good. I had chocolate extreme others in my group had almond crunch and Maine wild blueberry. The small was HUGE !! The staff were friendly. Each of the cashiers has a tip jar telling you what they are saving up for. I thought that was pretty cool. If you are in the area stop by.

Maine survivor flavor in a small cup (which is really quite large!)

This store has never asked a kid to leave ever, I have never seen such a grumpy old obnoxious individual since the 80s, and I've been coming here for the last 30 years with my children and now my grandchildren. They always go out of their way to make sure everybody is accommodated and they even set up face painting and tattoos for the kids outside. This is a very welcoming store to all and a family candy store in downtown York Beach, Maine. It was founded by Margaret "Peggy" Shaheen Fennelly, who named it for her mother Josephine "Josie" Skeip Shaheen. The shop specializes in over 60 flavors of homemade fudge, old-fashioned hard candies, gummies, saltwater taffy, and other classic candies. The shop also serves Gifford's brand ice cream and Richie's brand Italian ice. After Peggy passed away in 2021, the shop was taken over by her daughter Kathleen Fennelly Perez and her husband Jose. As of 2025, Sweet Josie's is now under new ownership. The shop operates from late April through mid October. My family and I recently visited Sweet Josie's this summer while we were spending the week in York. We were really impressed with the interior of the shop; it was so colorful. All of the candy looked so delicious, especially the fudge! However, we were actually on the hunt for some delicious ice cream. After looking over all of the flavors, I got a cup of "Dinosaur Crunch" (blue vanilla ice cream, fudge swirl, chocolate-covered Rice Krispies), my wife had a cup of "Sea Salt Caramel Truffle", and our sons both had cups of "Cookie Monster". That ice cream really hit the spot; it was exactly what we were looking for. The next time we make a trip to York, we'll have to stop at Sweet Josie's again and try out their homemade fudge!
